How to Prepare Landing Pages for Google Ads AI Mode Promotions

There is no separate landing-page format documented for “AI Mode promotions.” Prepare the page to match the ad and search intent, make the advertised offer and next step immediately clear, and check that the destination works well on mobile. Google’s current guidance covers ads in AI Overviews, AI Max in Search campaigns, and promotion assets as distinct features—not a dedicated AI Mode promotion placement.

What “AI Mode promotions” means in Google Ads

Google documents ads in AI Overviews on Search, AI Max features for Search campaigns, and promotion assets. These are related but separate concepts. Google says eligible ads can appear above, below, or within AI Overviews; advertisers cannot directly choose that placement or opt out of it. The same landing-page fundamentals apply whether or not an ad appears alongside an AI Overview.

Google Ads Help defines a landing page as “The webpage where people end up after they click your ad.” The practical goal is to make that page a useful, trustworthy continuation of the ad—not to build a special page for an unconfirmed “AI Mode” format.

How to prepare a landing page for Google Ads

Match the page to the ad and the search

Make the product, service, or offer named in the ad easy to find on the destination. If an ad promises shoes at 20% off, for example, the page should show those shoes at that price and let visitors purchase them. Avoid sending a visitor to a broad homepage or a section where they must hunt for the advertised item.

Make the expected action obvious

Give the page one clear next step that matches the ad’s purpose: purchase, call, request information, or sign up. Keep the relevant button, form, or contact details easy to find, and do not make visitors take an unrelated detour before acting.

Put useful information where visitors can find it

Explain the advertised product or service with useful, original content. Put key details early, keep navigation simple, and make contact information easy to locate. Google recommends pages that load quickly on mobile; check the page on a phone as well as a desktop, including the visibility and usability of its primary action.

Check that the destination works and follows policy

Test the destination as an ordinary visitor would. It should load, be easy to navigate, use the same domain as the ad’s display URL, and accurately represent what the ad offers. Google’s destination policy identifies disruptive pop-ups, difficult navigation, direct downloads, and destinations that lead to an email address or file as problems. Review the current Google Ads destination requirements before launch.

Make promotion details consistent across the ad and page

Promotion assets can state percentage or monetary discounts and conditions such as a redemption code, dates, or minimum spend. The click should take visitors to the offer on your site. Check the asset and landing page side by side so the price, eligible products, dates, conditions, and redemption instructions agree.

  • Show the offer and the products or services it applies to.
  • State any code, minimum spend, eligibility limit, or other condition needed to redeem it.
  • Make the start and end dates clear where the offer is time-limited.
  • For local promotions, include important conditions and a link to terms when available.

Google says occasion-specific promotion assets must be created or edited within six months of their start date to be eligible to serve. Confirm current requirements in Google Ads promotion assets guidance.

Keep retail product information accurate

For retail campaigns, check that the information supplied to Google agrees with the live product page and current offer. Google recommends reviewing product descriptions, prices, promotions, shipping, returns, and other product attributes. Where an applicable enhanced ad unit uses images or video, use varied, high-quality assets that accurately represent the product.

These checks matter even when a visitor’s route to the ad is shaped by an AI-assisted Search experience: a mismatch between feed, promotion, ad, and page can leave the visitor with a different offer from the one they expected.

Choose between a fixed destination and AI Max expansion

With a manually specified final URL, you choose the landing page. AI Max can instead select a relevant URL on your domain and customize ad text using content from existing ads, landing pages, and assets. Google says final URL expansion requires text customization.

Decision point Manual final URL AI Max final URL expansion
Destination control You specify the destination for the ad. Google may select a relevant URL on your domain.
Page relevance Check that your chosen page fits the ad and query. Check that alternate pages are relevant to likely query intent.
Ad text and page consistency Review the ad against the page you selected. Review customized text against the pages and assets from which it may draw content.
Tracking templates Test the template with the specified final URL. Test it with dynamically selected landing pages; Google warns incompatible templates can cause broken pages or 404 errors.

Neither setup is a universal winner. Prefer a fixed destination when the advertised offer needs a tightly controlled page. Consider expansion only when relevant alternate pages are ready and you can verify the text, destination, and tracking behavior. Review Google’s current AI Max for Search campaigns guidance before enabling its controls.

What ads can appear in AI Overviews—and what you can measure

Google’s Ads Help page says ads may be eligible above or below AI Overviews in all 200+ markets where AI Overviews are available. Ads within AI Overviews are documented more narrowly: the page describes availability in English on mobile and desktop in Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, and the United States. Existing text and Shopping ads from Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns may be eligible within AI Overviews, subject to auction and relevance conditions. Google says those ads must address both the user’s query and the Overview content.

The same page lists adult, alcohol, gambling, finance, healthcare, and politics among sensitive verticals excluded from the documented experience. Availability, eligibility, and policy details can change; check the current Google Ads information about ads in AI Overviews for your market and campaign.

Google currently reports these ads as “Top Ads.” It does not provide segmented reporting for Search AI Overview placements, and advertisers cannot target only that placement or opt out of it. Evaluate results against the business outcomes you can measure in your campaign rather than treating an Overview-specific report as available. Google cites its own 2024 internal data for a claim that users find ads within AI Overviews helpful, but gives no numerical result; that is Google’s characterization, not a quantified performance estimate.

Pre-launch checklist

  • The landing page shows the advertised product or offer without an unnecessary search.
  • The primary action matches the ad and is easy to use on mobile.
  • Prices, dates, codes, eligibility, shipping, and returns agree wherever they appear.
  • The destination loads, is navigable, and does not rely on disruptive pop-ups or lead to a file or email address.
  • Retail feed details and page content are accurate; applicable images or video are suitable for the ad unit.
  • If AI Max expansion is enabled, alternate destinations and customized ad text have been checked.
  • Tracking templates work with the destinations AI Max may select, with no broken pages or 404s.
  • Campaign assessment uses available business and campaign reporting, without assuming segmented AI Overview data.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
