The review is an internal control: it catches major-version notices, minor changes, unversioned behavior changes, client-library requirements, and approaching sunsets early enough for engineers to test and migrate safely.
What the twice-monthly cadence is—and is not
A twice-monthly checkpoint is a team operating rhythm, not a claim about Google’s release calendar. Google’s guidance says the API typically has three major releases and three major-release sunsets per year. Between those events, minor releases and unversioned changes can still affect requests, responses, validation, quotas, generated code, or error handling.

Hold the checkpoint on a predictable schedule, such as the first and third Tuesday. Assign an owner, keep a change log, and require a disposition for every item: no action, monitor, plan work, or migrate by a specific date. This turns a release note into an engineering decision instead of an unread announcement.
Google’s stay-updated guidance says: "The Google Ads API changes frequently, and you should keep your application up to date with the changes."

Understand the three kinds of change
Start every review by classifying the incoming item. The classification determines whether you need a new endpoint, source changes, a library upgrade, or simply a regression check.
| Change type | Endpoint effect | Compatibility expectation | Typical engineering response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Major release | A new major-version endpoint is introduced. | Breaking changes are possible; existing code may need edits. | Read the upgrade guide, inspect release notes and proto differences, update the endpoint and compatible client library, then test and roll out. |
| Minor release | The existing major endpoint is updated in place. | Backward-compatible by design, although new fields, enums, operations, or behavior can affect assumptions in client code. | Review the notes, refresh generated or pinned dependencies when appropriate, run affected tests, and monitor production behavior. |
| Unversioned change | No new version boundary is advertised. | Changes can still occur outside major-version boundaries. | Record the announcement or observed behavior, identify the affected integration, add or adjust tests, and decide whether a code or configuration change is needed. |
Do not treat “backward-compatible” as “requires no work.” A minor change can add response values that an exhaustive switch rejects, expose a field your serializer does not preserve, or alter an error path your retry logic did not anticipate. Conversely, do not schedule a full migration for every minor note: classify the impact against the code that actually uses the affected service.
Build an integration and version register
You cannot manage a sunset or library requirement that you have not mapped. Create one row for every deployed integration, batch job, service, and environment that calls the API. Keep the register in version control or another system with an audit trail.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Integration owner: team, escalation contact, and repository.
- Environment: production, staging, development, and any customer-specific deployment.
- API endpoint: the major version and the services or resource families used.
- Client library: language, package name, exact version constraint, lockfile version, and build image.
- Authentication and credentials: where the OAuth configuration and developer-token settings are managed, without storing secrets in the register.
- Traffic profile: read-only reporting, mutating operations, offline jobs, streaming, or mixed workloads.
- Sunset date: the date published for the endpoint, marked tentative when Google labels it tentative.
- Minimum compatible library version: the version identified in Google’s compatibility information for that API version.
- Last validation: commit, test run, environment, and reviewer.
Record the release and sunset dates from Google’s live sunset schedule rather than copying a deadline into a permanent document. Dates can change, and the schedule also carries the client-library compatibility details needed to plan an upgrade.
Find unmanaged callers
Search source repositories, deployment manifests, container images, scheduled-task definitions, and shared libraries for API hostnames, generated namespaces, package imports, and endpoint-version strings. Ask platform teams about scripts and notebooks that run outside the main build pipeline. A register that omits one reporting job can still leave the organization exposed when an endpoint stops serving traffic.
The twice-monthly release-review procedure
Use the same ordered procedure at both checkpoints. The first meeting of the month can emphasize discovery; the second can emphasize decisions and delivery, but both should leave a dated record.
- Collect official updates. Read the Google Ads API release notes and API blog or service announcements published since the previous checkpoint. Include notices for newly released versions, minor updates, deprecations, sunset changes, and unversioned feature changes.
- Refresh the sunset view. Compare every registered endpoint with the current sunset schedule. Capture the release date, sunset date, status, and minimum compatible client-library version. Flag any date that is tentative so planning does not create a false sense of certainty.
- Classify each item. Mark it as major-version migration, backward-compatible minor change, or unversioned change. If an announcement combines categories, split it into separate work items.
- Map impact to code. Identify the repositories, services, queries, mutations, protobuf types, generated clients, parsers, error handlers, dashboards, and runbooks that use the changed surface.
- Choose an action and owner. Select no action, monitor, test-only, dependency update, code change, or full migration. Assign one accountable engineer and a due date before closing the checkpoint.
- Update delivery artifacts. Add a ticket, migration branch, dependency update, test case, or monitoring task. Link the work item to the exact release-note entry in your internal record, and store the date of the review.
- Validate and communicate. Run the normal checks for the affected integration, publish the result to service owners, and escalate any sunset that cannot be completed before the deadline.
What a useful checkpoint record contains
Store the review date, reviewer, source announcement date, change classification, affected endpoint, affected operations, risk rating, chosen action, owner, target release, sunset date, library requirement, test evidence, rollout status, and follow-up date. “Reviewed” is not an adequate disposition if nobody can tell whether the integration is ready.

Major-version migration runbook
When a major release affects an integration, treat the work as a compatibility project rather than a routine package bump. Google publishes upgrade guidance and proto-difference tables; use both to turn the announcement into a concrete code inventory.
- Confirm the deadline and scope. Identify the current endpoint, its sunset date, the replacement endpoint, and every environment that uses it. Check whether the integration uses services listed as changed or removed.
- Read the upgrade guide first. Note renamed fields, changed types, removed operations, altered enum values, authentication or transport notes, and any migration sequencing requirements.
- Inspect proto differences. Compare the current and target protobuf definitions. Search for deleted fields, changed field numbers or types, new required behavior, enum additions, and message nesting changes. Update code generated from those definitions rather than hand-editing generated files.
- Select the compatible client library. Use the minimum library version identified for the target API version, then choose a newer compatible release if your dependency policy permits. Update the lockfile and build image together so local and production builds resolve the same client.
- Change the endpoint deliberately. Make the target major-version endpoint configurable where practical. Keep the old endpoint available in a controlled branch or deployment artifact until validation is complete, but do not leave production traffic split accidentally.
- Compile and fix schema assumptions. Resolve renamed symbols, changed method signatures, enum handling, pagination types, request builders, and serialization differences. Review wrappers and shared adapters, not only direct API calls.
- Review reads and writes separately. Reporting queries can fail differently from mutating requests. Test query construction, pagination, partial failures, idempotency, retries, batch operations, and any code that interprets response status.
- Review error handling. Compare documented error types and response structures. Verify that retryable errors remain retryable in your implementation and that unknown enum or field values fail safely rather than terminating a worker.
- Run the integration validation suite. Execute unit, contract, staging, and end-to-end checks appropriate to the service. Include representative accounts, permissions, currencies, date ranges, empty results, large pages, and known failure cases.
- Roll out with a reversal plan. Deploy to a low-risk environment or a small traffic slice, monitor request errors and business-level outputs, and keep a tested rollback or traffic-switch procedure. Complete the migration before the sunset date, not on the day service is disabled.
Use a change-impact matrix
| Question | Evidence to record | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Is it major, minor, or unversioned? | Release-note wording and version identifier. | Migration project, compatibility check, or monitoring task. |
| Does the endpoint change? | Current and target host/version paths. | Endpoint configuration and deployment work. |
| Does the schema or source code change? | Upgrade guide, proto-difference entries, compiler errors, and affected symbols. | Code, generated-client, query, or serializer edits. |
| Which library is required? | Language package and minimum compatible version. | Dependency, lockfile, and build-image update. |
| When is service withdrawn? | Sunset schedule entry and whether the date is tentative. | Due date, escalation path, and rollout deadline. |
Handling minor and unversioned changes
A minor release updates the existing major endpoint and is intended to remain backward-compatible. Your review should still ask whether the integration makes assumptions that new behavior can expose.
- Check exhaustive enum switches and default branches for newly introduced values.
- Check JSON, protobuf, CSV, and warehouse schemas for unknown or newly populated fields.
- Check query builders and validation code for new limits, operators, or resource types.
- Check dashboards and alerts for changed labels, dimensions, or error-rate interpretation.
- Check retry and rate-limit logic against any changed error or quota documentation.
Unversioned changes need the same discipline without a version number to anchor the work. Record what changed, when it was announced or observed, and which requests demonstrate the effect. Add a regression test that captures the expected behavior. If the behavior is ambiguous, isolate the caller behind a feature flag or adapter and ask the service owner for clarification through the normal support channel.
Client-library compatibility management
Google provides official client libraries for multiple programming languages. Google’s documentation describes the Node.js and Go libraries as community-maintained rather than officially supported or maintained, so teams using those libraries should include repository health, release responsiveness, and upgrade ownership in their risk assessment.
Pin a known-good version in each integration and record the minimum version compatible with every target API endpoint. Avoid an unbounded dependency such as “latest” in production: it can introduce a generated-schema change without a corresponding application review. At the same time, do not pin forever; stale libraries can prevent an endpoint migration or leave security and bug fixes unavailable.
Dependency update checklist
- Read the library’s release notes and the API release notes together.
- Confirm the package supports the target major endpoint and runtime version.
- Update direct and transitive dependencies in a reproducible lockfile.
- Regenerate code only with the repository’s documented generator and toolchain.
- Compile every service that shares the library, including command-line jobs and tests.
- Run the API validation suite before merging and repeat it from the production build image.
- Record the resulting package version and commit in the integration register.
Testing reads, writes, and failure paths
Compatibility risk is not limited to whether a request returns HTTP success. Build a test matrix around the operations your integration performs.
| Area | Examples of what to exercise | Evidence of readiness |
|---|---|---|
| Reads | Queries, pagination, filtering, empty results, large result sets, and newly populated fields. | Expected records and schema assertions match the target endpoint. |
| Writes | Create, update, mutate, batch, partial-failure, and idempotent retry behavior. | Only intended resources change; retries do not duplicate work. |
| Authentication and authorization | Valid credentials, expired tokens, insufficient permissions, and multiple account roles. | Failures are classified and surfaced without leaking credentials. |
| Errors | Validation, quota, rate-limit, transient transport, and unknown-value cases. | Retry, alert, and dead-letter behavior remains correct. |
| Operations | Timeouts, concurrency, logging, metrics, tracing, and rollback. | On-call staff can detect and reverse a bad rollout. |
Use test accounts or a staging workflow that cannot alter valuable production data. For mutating integrations, verify the resulting resource state through a separate read rather than trusting only the mutation response.

Sunset planning and escalation
Deprecated versions continue working until their published sunset date, but sunset endpoints stop working after that date. A deprecation warning is therefore a scheduling signal, not permission to wait. Put the date in the team calendar, ticket system, and service-level dashboard.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Set internal milestones earlier than the public deadline: discovery, dependency update, staging validation, limited rollout, full rollout, and post-release observation. The earlier milestones provide room for accounts with unusual permissions, long-lived batch jobs, or shared libraries that need coordinated upgrades.
If an integration cannot meet the date, escalate with a concrete inventory: endpoint, affected accounts, current library, completed tests, blocker, owner, and requested decision. Do not assume that continuing to call the old endpoint after the sunset will degrade gracefully; the documented outcome is that sunset endpoints stop working.
Roles that keep the process working
Twice-monthly reviews fail when they are treated as a meeting with no owner. Define responsibilities explicitly:
- API steward: collects release notes, maintains the calendar, and opens change records.
- Service owner: decides impact and accepts the migration or monitoring plan.
- Library owner: validates package, generator, runtime, and lockfile changes.
- Test owner: maintains representative read, write, and error scenarios.
- Release manager: schedules deployment, monitors the rollout, and confirms rollback readiness.
- On-call owner: updates alerts and runbooks for changed errors, quotas, or response shapes.
For a small team, one person can hold several roles, but the review record should still show who made each decision and who can execute the recovery plan.
Common failure modes and fixes
Only watching major-version announcements
Symptom: The team is surprised by a new field, enum, error, or behavior between major releases.
Fix: Review minor-release notes and unversioned announcements at both monthly checkpoints, and maintain tests for assumptions that are not protected by a version boundary.

Upgrading the package without changing the endpoint
Symptom: The build succeeds but production still calls the deprecated major version.
Fix: Treat endpoint configuration and client-library compatibility as separate checklist items; verify the effective endpoint in deployment configuration and startup logs.
Testing only reporting queries
Symptom: Reads pass while mutations, partial failures, or retries break after migration.
Fix: Test reads, writes, authentication, quotas, transient errors, and idempotency according to the integration’s actual traffic profile.
Assuming a community-maintained library has official support
Symptom: An upgrade blocker has no clear maintainer or response path.
Best Value
Fix: Record the maintenance status, assign an internal owner, and evaluate whether the integration should use an officially supported language library or an isolated adapter.
A practical two-checkpoint calendar
Checkpoint one: discovery and sizing
Collect all announcements, refresh sunset dates, classify changes, and update the integration register. For each major migration, identify affected repositories, libraries, operations, and test data. Produce a ranked work list with deadlines and owners.
Checkpoint two: delivery and risk review
Review progress against every open item, merge or schedule dependency and endpoint changes, run staging validation, and confirm monitoring and rollback steps. Reclassify any newly published change and escalate work that cannot meet its sunset milestone.

What success looks like
After several cycles, every integration should have a known API version, client-library version, sunset date, owner, and recent validation result. New release notes should produce small, traceable decisions rather than emergency investigations. Major migrations should begin soon after publication, while minor and unversioned changes should be absorbed through targeted tests and controlled dependency updates.
The cadence is deliberately more frequent than Google’s typical major-release schedule. Its value is the regular habit of checking, classifying, testing, and recording changes before they become an outage or an unplanned migration.
