The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is scheduled to release on November 5, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2. You can prepare without finishing the original: confirm you have the correct console, leave room for a provisional 27 GB digital download, decide whether you want a nostalgia replay or a spoiler-light first experience, and install the optional ZELDA NOTES companion service if its features appeal to you. Nintendo has announced major presentation and control changes, but the remake is not yet released, so performance, final image quality, difficulty, and the full extent of gameplay changes remain unverified.
What is confirmed about the remake?
Nintendo’s US and UK product pages describe the game as a remake for a new era and list November 5, 2026, as the release date. At the October 13, 2026 research cutoff, that date was still in the future. Treat the following specifications as Nintendo’s current product information rather than post-release testing.

Do you need to play the original Ocarina of Time first?
No. Nintendo presents the remake as an entry point to the series and does not state that previous completion is required. Starting with the remake is a reasonable choice if you want to encounter its new presentation, dialogue, music, and controls without comparing every scene with the 1998 game.
| Choice | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Replay the original first | Players who want nostalgia, a refresher on the route, or a direct before-and-after comparison | Familiarity can reveal story beats and puzzles before you see the remake’s interpretation |
| Start the remake fresh | Newcomers and players who want Nintendo’s announced changes to feel unfamiliar | You will not have the original’s reference points while playing |
| Use a short story refresher only | Returning players who remember the broad plot but not every objective | You retain less mechanical familiarity than a full replay |
A spoiler-light story foundation
Link is summoned by the Great Deku Tree and becomes involved in a conflict over Hyrule’s future. Ganondorf seeks the Triforce, and Link’s quest to save Hyrule spans two eras. The ocarina is central: melodies can open paths and shift the time of day. That is enough context to understand the premise without requiring a full replay or a plot synopsis that gives away later discoveries.
When a replay is worth your time
Replay the original if you enjoy recognizing locations, comparing dungeon layouts, or remembering how the ocarina works before the remake arrives. A replay is also useful if you want to finish unfinished side quests from your earlier playthrough. It is not a prerequisite, and there is no announced completion bonus that requires an old save file.
Prepare the right console and enough storage
Confirm Switch 2 access
The announced remake is a Nintendo Switch 2 release. Before preordering, check the model of the console you actually own and make sure the purchase is associated with the correct Nintendo account and region. Nintendo’s current information does not promise an original-Switch version. If you are buying a console for this game, treat Switch 2 ownership as a requirement unless Nintendo changes the listing.
Plan for the digital download
Nintendo’s US product page currently estimates a 27 GB game file. It also warns that preorder information and file size may not be final. Keep more than the estimate free rather than targeting exactly 27 GB, then recheck the final eShop size close to launch. Use the console’s storage-management screen to verify available space before beginning the download. If the final size increases, you will have room to absorb the change without deleting a game in a hurry.
The 27 GB figure is a provisional product estimate, not a measured final installation size. Do not use it to infer download time: connection speed, network congestion, and any day-one update will affect how long installation takes.
Choose physical or digital deliberately
| Format | Advantages | Preparation points |
|---|---|---|
| Physical | Less dependence on internal storage for the initial game data, a cartridge to lend or resell, and Nintendo’s announced textured foil packaging | The special packaging is available while supplies last; retailer inventory, delivery dates, and regional SKUs can differ |
| Digital | Immediate access when the download becomes available and no cartridge swapping | Reserve storage for the provisional 27 GB file and any update; the final size may change |
Nintendo has confirmed a physical version at launch while supplies last. That statement does not guarantee that every retailer or country will receive the same packaging, so verify the edition and stock where you plan to buy. No price difference between formats is established in the available product information.

What is new in the remake?
Nintendo’s announcements describe substantial changes, but they are announcements rather than independent hands-on findings. The confirmed or stated additions include:
- Completely overhauled or reimagined visuals.
- Fully voiced cutscenes.
- Expanded or new dialogue.
- A refreshed soundtrack, including symphonic orchestral music in Nintendo’s US description.
- Enhanced controls and modern camera movements.
- Dash movement and the ability to freely leap over gaps or obstacles, according to Nintendo UK.
- Horse riding later in the quest, according to Nintendo UK.
- The Threads of Time feature for story recap, current objectives, and a tapestry tracking Link’s journey.
Nintendo UK also describes a world in which time passes, with day and night affecting people or enemies, plus dungeons and sacred temples containing puzzles, foes, and treasures. These descriptions explain the intended scope; they do not establish how the remake performs on a television or in handheld mode, how challenging it is, or how extensively any dungeon or quest has been redesigned.
Use Threads of Time as a planning aid
Threads of Time is presented as an in-game way to recap the story, review current objectives, and view a tapestry of Link’s journey. If you are returning after a break, that feature may reduce the need to keep an external checklist. New players can use it to recover their place without assuming that every objective must be remembered from the original.

Set up the optional ZELDA NOTES service
Nintendo describes ZELDA NOTES as a game-specific service in the Nintendo Switch App. Nintendo UK says a compatible smart device is required and that a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use it. The announced features include:
- Tracking daily accomplishments.
- Image-based challenges that ask you to find locations.
- Playing ocarina melodies on a smart device.
- Confirm that your phone or tablet is compatible with the Nintendo Switch App.
- Install or update the app before launch and sign in to the Nintendo account you intend to use with the game.
- Check the ZELDA NOTES section for its connection or setup instructions when Nintendo makes the service available.
- Decide whether daily challenges and location-finding add value for you; the core game does not require the service.
The service is optional. Do not confuse “Nintendo Switch App” access with Nintendo Switch Online membership: Nintendo’s UK description specifically says a membership is not required for ZELDA NOTES.
Understand the Nintendo Switch Online and music distinction
The remake is listed as a separately sold Nintendo Switch 2 game. Nintendo does not identify Nintendo Switch Online as a requirement to buy or play it. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack provides access to Nintendo 64 titles through the Nintendo Classics library, but that subscription-based classic-game access is not the same product as purchasing this remake.
Nintendo’s official Ocarina of Time playlist on Nintendo Music requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Listening to that playlist can be a pleasant way to revisit the soundtrack, but it is an optional listening service and has no stated requirement relationship to the remake.
Choose how you want to play the ocarina
Nintendo says the remake offers several ways to handle ocarina melodies. You can use button controls, try humming into the Switch 2’s built-in microphone, or play songs on a real ocarina. A physical instrument is optional.

| Method | Practical benefit | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Button controls | Predictable and convenient, especially in shared spaces | Nothing beyond the controller; review the on-screen note prompts when the game begins |
| Built-in microphone | A hands-free or novelty option for trying melodies by humming | Play somewhere the microphone can hear you clearly; Nintendo has not published detailed accuracy requirements |
| Real ocarina | A tactile way to practice and perform the melodies | An instrument is optional, and no specific model is required by Nintendo |
Because the remake had not released at the research cutoff, there is no verified evidence about microphone recognition accuracy, supported note ranges, or whether every song can be performed identically by each method. Treat those details as launch-day questions rather than established specifications.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide whether amiibo matter to you
Nintendo says existing Zelda-series amiibo can provide in-game extras. That makes amiibo an optional enhancement, not a requirement for accessing the story, dungeons, or core progression. Nintendo has also identified Young Link and Young Zelda figures scheduled for 2027, after the listed November 2026 game release. Do not assume those figures will be available at launch or that you need them to start playing.
Use the ratings and language information to plan for your household
Nintendo’s US listing displays the ESRB descriptors Animated Blood and Fantasy Violence. Nintendo UK displays PEGI 12. These are regional ratings, not a single worldwide classification; use the rating authority for your country when making a household decision. If your family uses parental controls, configure them on the Switch 2 before release rather than waiting until the first play session.
The broad language list on Nintendo’s product information is useful for multilingual households, but availability can depend on the console region and account settings. Confirm the exact language support shown by your local store listing before purchase.

A practical preparation plan
Several weeks before release
- Verify that you will play on Nintendo Switch 2.
- Choose a physical or digital format based on storage, packaging, delivery, and convenience rather than an assumed price difference.
- If you want the original first, schedule a replay with a stopping point that leaves time for the remake.
- Install or update the Nintendo Switch App if you want to try ZELDA NOTES.
- Decide whether button, microphone, or real-instrument melody play fits your space and interest.
Near launch
- Recheck the official store listing for the release date, final download size, rating, and language options.
- Confirm free Switch 2 storage; leave headroom above Nintendo’s provisional 27 GB estimate.
- For a physical purchase, verify the exact regional edition and whether textured foil packaging is still in stock.
- For a digital purchase, verify the account, region, payment method, and download destination you will use.
- Charge controllers and update the console so installation is not delayed by maintenance.
On release day
- Check that the game has finished installing before starting a long session.
- Open the settings and control options to see how Nintendo has implemented enhanced controls, camera movement, and melody input.
- Use Threads of Time if you need a recap or objective reminder.
- Try ZELDA NOTES only if you have a compatible smart device and want its optional challenges.
- Keep expectations aligned with the announced features: final performance and the exact scale of gameplay changes can only be judged after release.
What is still unknown?
No verified hands-on evidence was available by October 13, 2026 for frame rate, resolution, loading behavior, final image quality, control responsiveness, difficulty balance, accessibility options, save-data behavior, or the precise extent of quest and dungeon changes. Nintendo’s own listing cautions that product details, including rating and download size, may not be final. There was also no remake-specific official strategy guide established in the available information.
Those limits do not prevent preparation. They do mean you should avoid buying accessories, storage, or a subscription on the assumption that an unannounced feature will exist. Recheck Nintendo’s product page and your regional retailer shortly before November 5 for final specifications, stock, and any guide or update announcements.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for different kinds of players
- New to Zelda: Start with the remake if you want Nintendo’s announced modern presentation without prior comparisons. You do not need the original or Nintendo Switch Online.
- Returning fan: Replay the original only if nostalgia, route memory, or comparison matters to you; it is not a requirement.
- Digital buyer: Reserve storage beyond the provisional 27 GB estimate and recheck the final eShop size.
- Collector: Watch physical-edition stock because the textured foil packaging is announced only while supplies last.
- Optional-feature enthusiast: Prepare a compatible smart device for ZELDA NOTES, and treat amiibo and real-ocarina play as extras rather than prerequisites.
