Prepare for the interview you will actually take, not a generic “AI interview.” Build independent technical skill, practise explaining your reasoning aloud, use AI as a supervised training aid before the session, and confirm exactly what tools the employer permits. Never use an AI assistant during a live interview or assessment unless the instructions explicitly allow it.
What changes when AI is part of hiring?
AI is affecting both sides of technical hiring. Engineers may use coding assistants in their jobs, while employers may use automated scheduling, recorded interviews, screening tools or AI-supported assessments. That does not create one universal interview format or one universal rule for candidates. A company can prohibit AI in a timed coding exercise, allow ordinary documentation in a system-design discussion, or deliberately ask you to evaluate an AI-generated solution. The only safe assumption is that the rules depend on the employer, role, assessment stage and jurisdiction.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Your preparation therefore has two tracks:
- Underlying ability: solve technical problems, make assumptions visible, test your work, discuss complexity and trade-offs, and explain decisions from your own experience.
- Tool judgment: know when an AI output is useful, how to verify it, what information must not be shared, and how to follow the assessment’s disclosure and tool rules.
A survey of 131 people preparing for software-engineering interviews, published by Bell, Thomas, Lee and Brown on arXiv on 2 July 2025, found that candidates rarely practised in conditions resembling the real interview. The authors associated that mismatch with stress and feeling unprepared; the survey does not prove that one particular routine causes better hiring results. The practical lesson is narrower and more defensible: include realistic, spoken, time-limited practice rather than relying only on private puzzle solving.
Check the AI policy before you practise for the real assessment
Read every invitation, candidate guide, coding-platform notice and calendar message. Look for rules about AI assistants, internet access, documentation, screen sharing, recording, external code, copy-and-paste and disclosure. A rule for a take-home assignment may not apply to a live technical interview with the same employer.

What to ask when the instructions are unclear
- Ask the recruiter or coordinator which tools are allowed at this stage: an AI assistant, ordinary web documentation, a local IDE, a compiler, calculators or reference notes.
- Ask whether the session is recorded, automatically scored or reviewed by a person, and what capabilities are being assessed.
- Ask whether AI use must be disclosed, which products or model types are approved, and whether prompts or chat transcripts must be retained.
- Ask how to request an accessibility accommodation or an alternative format if the process creates a barrier.
- Save the written answer and follow the latest stated instructions if messages conflict.
Do not infer permission from the fact that the interview platform has a browser or that engineers at the company use AI at work. Conversely, do not infer a blanket ban from a general statement about academic integrity. Clarify the specific assessment.
Use these rules as your decision table
| Situation | What you should do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| AI is explicitly prohibited | Disable assistants, extensions and autocomplete features that generate code. Use only the listed tools. | Using a hidden assistant can invalidate an otherwise strong performance. |
| AI is explicitly permitted | Use only approved tools, disclose your use as requested, and remain able to explain and test every output. | Permission usually covers a defined stage and purpose, not unlimited outsourcing. |
| Rules say nothing | Ask before the session. Until you receive an answer, prepare to work without generative AI. | Silence is not consent. |
| The job requires AI-assisted development | Practise a transparent workflow: formulate the problem, generate a draft, inspect it, run tests, correct it and explain the final decision. | The employer may be evaluating judgment and verification, not prompt speed. |
| You receive confidential or personal material | Do not paste it into an unapproved service. Use fictional, public or locally controlled examples for practice. | Prompts can expose source code, customer data, credentials or interview content. |
The Scottish Government Recruitment Team gives a clear example for its own recruitment: “It’s important to understand that while AI can help you prepare for an interview, AI must never be used during an interview to generate responses.” Its guide also says, “Your application, assessment and interview should give us an accurate and authentic picture of your skills and experience.” Those are rules and expectations for that government context, not a universal law for private employers.
Build the technical ability that an assistant cannot credibly replace
AI can produce a plausible answer quickly, but an interview still exposes whether you can frame a problem, detect a wrong assumption and adapt when requirements change. Practise the complete reasoning loop:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Clarify: restate the task, ask about input limits, invalid values, ordering, duplicates, mutability and expected failure behaviour.
- Propose: describe a simple baseline before an optimized approach. State the data structures and invariants you intend to maintain.
- Estimate: give time and space complexity, including the cost of sorting, recursion, network calls or auxiliary storage.
- Implement: write small, named functions and narrate decisions without dictating every keystroke.
- Test: run a normal example, a boundary case, an empty or minimal input, duplicates or repeated operations, and an invalid case if the contract permits one.
- Review: look for off-by-one errors, mutation, integer overflow, concurrency hazards, error handling and assumptions that were never confirmed.
Practise communication as a technical skill
Record yourself solving a problem in 20 to 35 minutes. Start with a concise plan, pause when a requirement is ambiguous, and invite the interviewer to correct an assumption. Explain why you rejected an alternative, not just why your chosen method works. A technically correct solution that is impossible to follow is difficult to evaluate in a collaborative role.
Use a shared editor, whiteboard or plain paper that resembles the employer’s format. If the interview will not provide a compiler, practise without one; if it includes execution, practise running tests while speaking. Change one condition halfway through a rehearsal so you learn to revise a design instead of clinging to a memorized solution.
Cover work-aligned tasks, not only algorithm puzzles
- Debug a failing test or production-like log and explain how you narrowed the search.
- Review a short pull request, identifying correctness, security, maintainability and testing concerns in priority order.
- Design an API or service, covering data model, authentication, idempotency, rate limits, observability, failure recovery and scaling assumptions.
- Explain a project you built, including constraints, alternatives, your personal contribution and what you would change.
- For an AI-focused role, inspect generated code or an answer for hallucinations, unsafe defaults, data leakage and evaluation gaps.
Match your preparation to the assessment format
Different formats reveal different skills. Divide practice time according to the format stated in the invitation rather than treating every interview as a coding puzzle.

Use AI before the interview without outsourcing your thinking
An AI assistant can make practice more varied and immediate. Treat it as a demanding practice partner, not an authority or a source of wording to memorize.
Ask it to act as an interviewer
Give it the role, seniority, language, assessment format and a fictional or public job description. Instruct it to ask one question at a time, wait for your answer, and probe assumptions before giving feedback. A useful prompt is:
Act as a backend interviewer for a mid-level role. Ask one API-design question at a time. Do not provide a solution until I have proposed one. After each answer, assess requirements coverage, trade-offs, failure handling and clarity. Use only the public job description below.
Answer aloud or in your own notes before requesting the next question. If the assistant immediately reveals a solution, restart with a stricter instruction or use a human partner.
Generate a targeted question set
Paste only public, non-sensitive requirements and ask for a balanced set: coding, debugging, system design, project deep dives and behavioural follow-ups. Request difficulty labels and the skill each question tests. Remove questions that depend on an employer’s confidential architecture or an unstated technology.
Request hints in stages
Use a ladder: first ask for a clarification question, then a conceptual hint, then a small example, and only last a full explanation. Record which hint you needed. Re-solve the problem later without assistance; otherwise a fluent explanation can conceal a gap in your own recall.

Give the assistant your own proposed solution and ask it to check assumptions, complexity, edge cases and clarity against explicit criteria. Do not accept its verdict automatically. Run code, consult authoritative documentation and construct counterexamples. Models can invent APIs, misstate complexity or overlook security and concurrency problems.

Protect information and authenticity
- Use fictional data, public repositories or a small toy problem.
- Strip names, credentials, customer records, unpublished designs, proprietary code and interview prompts from anything you submit.
- Do not ask an assistant to invent projects, metrics, job titles, certifications or responsibilities for your résumé or interview stories.
- Keep a version of your answer in your own words and be ready to reproduce the reasoning without the chat.
Prepare credible examples from your own work
For each important project, write a five-part outline:
- Problem and constraints: who needed what, and what limits mattered?
- Your contribution: which decisions and implementation work were yours?
- Alternatives: what did you consider and reject?
- Outcome: what changed, and how did you measure it?
- Reflection: what failed, what did you learn, and what would you change?
Expect follow-ups such as “Why that database?”, “How did you know the fix worked?”, “What would happen at ten times the traffic?” and “Which part did your teammate own?” AI-generated prose is especially risky here: it may sound polished while containing details you cannot defend. Use notes to remember facts, not a script to perform.
Show practical AI literacy when the role calls for it
If the job description names AI-assisted development, machine-learning systems or evaluation, demonstrate a workflow rather than merely listing a tool or certificate. Explain how you would:

The Oxford Internet Institute’s Hire AI project reports an international survey experiment involving 1,800 recruiters and human-resources professionals in the United States, United Kingdom and Germany during February 2025 to February 2026. Its project page says candidates with certified AI skills were significantly more likely to be invited to interviews. That is evidence from one experiment, not a promise that buying a certificate will secure an interview. A credential is useful only when you can connect it to demonstrable work and explain its limits.
Understand what employers may be doing with AI
Canada’s Public Service Commission says hiring managers remain accountable for appointment decisions when AI is used. Its guidance discusses validating AI output, explaining relevant uses and informing candidates when AI supports assessment. It also warns that opaque scoring can introduce bias or make a decision difficult to explain. The guidance allows candidate AI use when it reflects the job, while advising employers to specify permitted tools and stages. This is Canadian federal public-service guidance, not a statement of every employer’s legal duties.
If an employer says an AI system will be involved, ask factual process questions rather than demanding a particular outcome:

- Will the interview be recorded, transcribed or scored automatically?
- Which competencies and signals will be assessed?
- May I use an AI assistant, ordinary documentation or accessibility software?
- How is human review performed, and whom should I contact about an accommodation?
Whether the employer must answer a specific question depends on the jurisdiction and its policy. The purpose of asking is to prepare accurately and identify practical constraints early.

A four-week preparation plan
| Time | Focus | Deliverable |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Parse the job description; list languages, systems, responsibilities and likely formats. Take a baseline coding, design and project-story session. | A skills matrix, policy questions for the recruiter and a gap list. |
| Week 2 | Practise core patterns in your clearest language. Add debugging, testing and complexity explanations. Use an AI mock interviewer only with public material. | Several timed solutions and a log of errors, hints and recurring weak areas. |
| Week 3 | Run full-format rehearsals: one live coding session, one design or debugging session, and one project deep dive. Ask a person to interrupt with follow-ups. | Recorded or written feedback on correctness, communication, pacing and recovery. |
| Week 4 | Close the highest-impact gaps, refine your work examples, confirm tools and logistics, and rehearse without AI. | A one-page checklist, tested setup and concise, truthful story outlines. |
If you have less time, keep the order: confirm the rules, run one realistic baseline, fix the largest technical gap, practise aloud, then verify logistics. More unstructured question volume is less useful than feedback tied to the actual assessment.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Memorizing generated solutions
Symptom: you can repeat a pattern but cannot adapt it when the input changes. Recovery: close the solution, derive the invariant yourself, solve a variant and explain the complexity from first principles.
Using AI secretly in a restricted session
Symptom: an extension, autocomplete tool or second device is active despite unclear rules. Recovery: disclose the situation immediately, disable the tool and follow the coordinator’s direction. Do not assume that concealing it is safer than asking.
Trusting an authoritative-sounding error
Symptom: an invented method, API or complexity claim appears in your notes. Recovery: reproduce the example, consult the language or platform documentation, write a counterexample and replace the claim with a verified explanation.
Giving a polished but non-authentic project story
Symptom: you cannot answer “What did you personally change?” or “What went wrong?” Recovery: return to your repository history, tickets or contemporaneous notes and rebuild the story from facts you can defend. Do not add metrics you did not measure.

Practising only in a comfortable environment
Symptom: private practice feels easy but a shared editor, timer or follow-up question causes a breakdown. Recovery: schedule short simulations with the actual interface, spoken reasoning and deliberate interruptions.
Resources that complement, rather than replace, practice
Free options include public problem sets, language documentation, open-source code for review, a peer study partner and timed sessions in a plain editor. Choose resources by the comparison that matters: similarity to the assessment, independent reasoning, feedback quality, permitted tool use, cost and accessibility, and whether the material is safe to share.
Cracking the Coding Interview, 6th Edition, by Gayle Laakmann McDowell, is an optional technical resource. The author describes it as a software-development and programming-interview guide containing 189 programming questions and solutions, technical topics and behavioural preparation. It can supply structured exercises, but it is not a current guide to AI-enabled hiring policy; confirm the edition and availability before purchasing.
No book, platform or certificate substitutes for solving unfamiliar problems, explaining trade-offs and following the employer’s stated rules.
Use this checklist on interview day
- Re-read the invitation and confirm whether AI, documentation, internet access and external code are allowed.
- Prepare the permitted editor, compiler, camera, microphone and backup contact method.
- Remove unapproved extensions, private notes and background applications that could create a policy problem.
- Have water and a blank, permitted place for notes; do not keep confidential material visible.
- At the start, confirm the format and tools if the interviewer has not already done so.
- State assumptions, test representative and edge cases, and explain complexity before time runs out.
- If a tool fails or a requirement is ambiguous, say so and ask; do not silently improvise a rule.
- Afterward, write down what you were asked, where you hesitated and what to practise next, without copying confidential content.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The 131-person preparation survey describes a defined group, not all technical candidates, and does not establish that one routine causes hiring success. The Oxford experiment covers 1,800 recruiters and HR professionals in three countries and reports an association between certified AI skills and interview invitations in that setting; it does not guarantee an invitation for any individual. A Harvard Kennedy School article published in August 2025 summarized BrightHire and Harvard Business School research by reporting that only 2.2% of interviews in 2025 included explicit AI questions. The detailed source page was inaccessible for verification, so the methodology and context of that figure are not established here; treat it as a provisional signal, not a universal measure.
These limits matter because interview practices vary by employer, role and jurisdiction. The durable preparation advice is less dramatic: develop the skill the role needs, practise in conditions that resemble the assessment, use AI to sharpen—not replace—your reasoning, and follow the rules you are given.
The practical answer
Prepare as though you will need to solve and explain the problem independently, then learn enough about AI-assisted work to discuss verification, privacy, reliability and trade-offs when the role requires it. Use an assistant before the interview for mock questions, hints and critique with public or fictional material. During the assessment, use AI only when the employer has explicitly permitted it and told you how to disclose that use. Your strongest signal is an accurate, authentic account of what you can build, how you think and how responsibly you use tools.
