How to Prepare for Space Weather: Alerts, Devices, and Power Outage Planning

The practical way to prepare for space weather is to monitor official NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) alerts, learn which kind of event is forecast, and make a normal emergency plan for a possible power interruption. Keep an alert path that does not rely on one internet connection, a battery or hand-crank radio, a flashlight with compatible spare batteries, basic food and water, and a family communications plan. No consumer device can prevent geomagnetic effects on the electric grid or guarantee GPS, cellular, or internet service during an event.

What space weather is—and why household preparation matters

Space weather is changing activity from the Sun and its effects on near-Earth space. Different events disturb different parts of the infrastructure people use, so “solar storm” is not one uniform hazard. The three public NOAA scales cover radio blackouts (R), solar radiation storms (S), and geomagnetic storms (G). A disturbance can affect high-frequency radio, satellite navigation, spacecraft, aviation operations, or electric-power systems without causing every service to fail in every location.

NOAA’s Space Weather 101 factsheet and Space Weather booklet describe these broad system impacts. The household consequence is usually indirect: loss of mains electricity, difficulty receiving information, degraded navigation, or disruption to communications. Actual effects depend on the event’s intensity, your latitude and location, the timing, and how utilities and communications providers respond.

NOAA’s extreme G5 description says widespread voltage-control and protective-system problems are possible; some grid systems could experience collapse or blackouts, and transformers could be damaged. That is a possible national-scale effect at the highest level, not a prediction that your local utility will fail. Similarly, severe ionospheric disturbance can degrade GPS range measurements or cause a receiver to lose signal lock, but it does not mean every phone will lose positioning.

Understand the three NOAA space-weather scales

NOAA introduced the scales “as a way to communicate to the general public the current and future space weather conditions and their possible effects on people and systems.” The official descriptions and current levels are on the NOAA Space Weather Scales page. Treat each level as a description of potential effects, not a guarantee for every community.

Scale Event Systems that may be affected What a household should do
R1–R5 Radio blackouts caused by enhanced solar X-rays High-frequency radio, some aviation and maritime communications, and in severe cases navigation signals Use more than one official information channel and expect that some radio or navigation functions may be intermittent.
S1–S5 Solar radiation storms involving energetic particles Spacecraft electronics, satellite operations, high-latitude aviation and communications Follow official instructions if you are flying, operating in polar routes, or depend on specialized radio or satellite services.
G1–G5 Geomagnetic storms driven by disturbances in the solar wind Electric-power systems, satellite navigation, satellites, and high-frequency radio Prepare for a possible power outage as you would for any emergency; keep information and lighting available without mains power.

NOAA associates G5 (Extreme) with Kp = 9 and lists an average frequency of four events per 11-year solar cycle. That is a long-term average statistic, not a schedule or a forecast for a particular year. Lower levels generally have less severe effects, but local infrastructure and system design still determine what a person experiences.

How to get reliable space-weather alerts

Subscribe to NOAA SWPC products

The NOAA SWPC Product Subscription Service lets you select official watches, warnings, alerts, forecasts, and summaries for email delivery. Use an address you check regularly, then choose products relevant to your needs rather than subscribing indiscriminately to every feed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Product Subscription Service and create or sign in to your account.
  2. Review the product categories and select the watches, warnings, alerts, forecasts, or summaries you want delivered.
  3. Confirm the subscription email and check that messages are not being diverted to spam or a low-priority folder.
  4. Add a second person in your household or workplace as a recipient so one unavailable phone or inbox does not remove your only warning path.
  5. Test the arrangement by opening a recent message and confirming that you can identify the event type, scale, issue time, and valid period.

Alert status changes as conditions evolve. Use the live NOAA Notifications Timeline to see current products and recent watches, warnings, alerts, summaries, and cancellations. Do not rely on a screenshot, repost, or old warning as proof that an alert remains active.

Add local and federal channels

Follow your electric utility, state or county emergency-management office, and local news or public-safety channels for outage instructions. NOAA SWPC explains space weather; local authorities explain evacuation, shelter, road, and utility decisions. Keep the links or phone numbers written on paper in case your normal connection is unavailable.

The FEMA app page says the app can receive National Weather Service alerts for up to five U.S. locations. Its functions and interface can change, and the app requires a working phone, power, and network or data access. Use it as one channel, not as your only warning system; check the current FEMA app information before relying on a particular feature.

Use a radio without confusing its role

FEMA’s emergency-kit checklist recommends “Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both.” A NOAA Weather Radio is useful for weather and emergency-management information, but it is not a substitute for SWPC’s website or email products and does not turn every space-weather alert into a local tone alert. Choose a radio that can receive the services you actually need in your area, and verify reception before an emergency.

Build an information and lighting kit

FEMA’s 2024 emergency-supply checklist provides a sound starting point. Adapt quantities to the number of people, climate, medical needs, pets, and accessibility requirements in your household.

  • Radio: Keep a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert, and compatible spare batteries. If the radio has a rechargeable cell, keep a way to recharge it that does not require mains power.
  • Flashlight: Store a flashlight where everyone can find it in darkness, with spare batteries of the exact type it uses. Do not assume batteries from the radio will fit.
  • Phone charging: A portable power bank can recharge a compatible phone or other small device. It cannot keep a cellular tower, broadband network, GPS satellite, or utility grid operating if that upstream service is unavailable.
  • Food and water: Keep drinking water and non-perishable food that household members can use without an electric cooker. Include a manual can opener where needed.
  • Medication and health supplies: Plan for prescriptions, refrigeration-dependent medicines, mobility equipment, hearing devices, and backup batteries according to advice from a clinician or supplier.
  • Personal and household needs: Include infant supplies, pet food and carriers, sanitation items, warm or cool clothing, copies of essential documents, and a small amount of cash if payment systems are unavailable.

No specific radio model, battery capacity, runtime, or power-bank performance is established by the preparedness guidance. Compare products by the services they receive, the power options they support, the availability of compatible spare batteries, and reception at your location—not by an unverified promise that a device can “protect” electronics from a storm.

Make a family communications plan before an outage

FEMA’s space-weather guidance recommends an emergency supply kit and a family communications plan. Write the plan down; a plan that exists only in one person’s phone may disappear with the phone’s battery or network connection.

  1. Choose an out-of-area contact who can relay messages if household members are separated. Make sure every person knows the contact’s name and number.
  2. List two meeting places: one close to home and another outside the immediate neighborhood in case roads or buildings are inaccessible.
  3. Decide which channel to try first, such as text message, voice call, or an official web update. Texts may use less bandwidth, but none is guaranteed during congestion or an outage.
  4. Write down utility, emergency-management, school, workplace, medical, and family numbers. Include addresses and any account or customer identifiers needed to report an outage.
  5. Set a check-in schedule and a simple status message so relatives do not repeatedly call every person. State clearly when someone is safe, where they are, and what help they need.
  6. Practice the plan once with phones switched to low-power mode and the internet unavailable. Correct missing numbers, inaccessible meeting places, or instructions that depend on a single device.

Plan for a possible power interruption

Space-weather guidance does not establish a universal outage duration, geographic extent, or household probability. Prepare for an uncertain interruption using the same safety principles as other power emergencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before the power goes out

  • Keep radios, flashlights, power banks, and spare batteries together where they can be reached without electric light.
  • Charge phones and power banks when an official watch or warning makes a disruption more plausible, while preserving one device for essential communication.
  • Record medical-device settings, backup contacts, and instructions for anyone who depends on powered equipment. Contact the utility or care provider in advance about medically necessary equipment and outage notification programs.
  • Know how to open garage doors, gates, and essential appliances manually if their normal controls need electricity.
  • Set refrigerator and freezer thermometers if food safety is important, and plan which foods can be eaten first without cooking.
  • Secure outdoor items and check that everyone knows where the utility’s main shutoff and circuit panel are, without attempting electrical work beyond your training.

During the interruption

  • Use the radio and flashlight rather than candles where possible. If you use candles, keep them away from children, pets, curtains, and anything that can burn.
  • Unplug sensitive electronics or use approved surge protection; when power returns, a surge can damage equipment.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. Follow current food-safety guidance before consuming food that has warmed.
  • Never run a generator, grill, camp stove, or fuel-burning heater indoors, in a garage, or near windows. Carbon monoxide can accumulate without an obvious smell.
  • Do not touch downed lines or flooded electrical equipment. Report hazards to the utility or emergency services and follow their instructions.
  • Use official utility and emergency-management updates for restoration information. A phone with charge can still be unable to connect if cell or broadband infrastructure is down.

When power returns

  • Wait for utility instructions before restoring specialized equipment or restarting a generator.
  • Turn on essential appliances one at a time and watch for repeated breaker trips, sparks, smoke, or unusual odors.
  • Recharge radios, flashlights, and power banks, replace used batteries, and update the written plan with any problems discovered.
  • Check official SWPC products for cancellations or continuing geomagnetic activity rather than assuming that the first restoration means all risk has ended.

Compare alert and information options by dependency

No single channel works in every failure mode. Use the following comparison when deciding what to keep ready.

What devices can—and cannot—do during a solar storm

A radio, flashlight, or power bank improves your ability to receive information and operate safely through a power interruption. None of them shields the electric grid from geomagnetic currents, repairs a damaged transformer, restores a failed cellular backhaul link, or recreates a satellite signal that a receiver cannot lock onto. Claims that a household gadget guarantees GPS, cellular, internet, or grid service go beyond the preparedness evidence.

GPS performance can degrade because ionospheric disturbances alter the signal path and range calculation; severe conditions can cause loss of receiver lock. Your phone may still show a previously cached map or use other sensors, but that is not the same as a reliable live satellite fix. Cellular voice and data can remain available, become congested, or fail because they depend on multiple powered systems. Keep local maps, written addresses, and meeting-place instructions for that reason.

Use a simple event-specific response

If NOAA issues an R-scale radio-blackout alert

Expect possible disruption to high-frequency radio and some navigation or aviation communications. Keep your information channels diverse, avoid treating one failed radio service as proof that all communications are down, and follow instructions from aviation, maritime, or emergency authorities if you are operating in those environments.

If NOAA issues an S-scale solar-radiation alert

The primary concerns are satellites, spacecraft operations, high-latitude aviation, and specialized communications rather than a guaranteed household blackout. If you are traveling by air, working with satellite equipment, or responsible for critical communications, follow the relevant operator’s procedures. A normal home kit still provides useful resilience if a related power or communications problem occurs.

If NOAA issues a G-scale geomagnetic-storm alert

Check the current level and valid time on SWPC, charge essential devices, locate the radio and flashlight, and review your outage and communications plan. At G5, NOAA lists possible widespread voltage-control and protective-system problems, potential grid collapse or blackouts in some systems, transformer damage, degradation of satellite navigation for days, and severe high-frequency-radio effects. These are possibilities at the extreme scale, not a statement that every household will experience each one.

Keep the plan current

Review subscriptions, batteries, contact numbers, medication arrangements, and meeting places at least twice a year and whenever someone moves, changes phone numbers, adopts a pet, or begins using powered medical equipment. Test the radio at home and, if possible, at the location where you would shelter. Replace expired food, rotate water, and recharge or replace power banks according to their manufacturer’s instructions.

This guidance is written for U.S. households because the alert channels and preparedness recommendations come from NOAA and FEMA/Ready.gov. Adapt it to your country’s space-weather service, utility procedures, climate, language, and emergency-number system. For individualized medical, accessibility, or critical-infrastructure advice, consult the relevant provider; no general checklist can determine your household’s safe outage plan.
