How to Prepare for Scary Caves and Monsters in Tears of the Kingdom

Prepare for cave trips in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom with healing and condition-appropriate meals, a way to create light, weapons suited to the enemies you expect, and an escape plan. Brightbloom Seeds handle darkness, while Ascend can provide an exit when enemies surround Link and the cave ceiling allows it. You do not need a fixed number of seeds, meals, or weapons: Nintendo’s official guidance supports adapting your supplies to the route and your equipment.

Start with the right plan for the place you are entering

“A cave” can mean two very different preparation problems in Tears of the Kingdom. Ordinary caves and wells may have short dark passages, uneven rooms, and a few monsters. The Depths are a much larger darkness problem, where seeing the next section of terrain is itself part of navigation. Treating both locations as identical leads to poor choices: a small healing stock may be enough for a quick cave detour but leave you uncomfortable on a long Depths route, while carrying every item you own into a tiny cave wastes resources and inventory space.

Situation Main risk Preparation emphasis
Ordinary cave or well A surprise encounter, a blocked route, or a short dark section Healing food, a few usable weapons, Brightbloom Seeds collected for immediate or later use, and a way to disengage
Dark exploration in the Depths Limited visibility over a much larger area Brightbloom Seeds for forward lighting, optional glow meals, meals that restore hearts and stamina, and a route decision before you descend
Monster-heavy room Being surrounded before you can reposition Keep an exit in mind, assess whether your equipment justifies a fight, and use Ascend if the cave geometry permits it

Nintendo’s published tips do not define a universal cave inventory. The useful standard is not “carry exactly this many items,” but “carry enough for the route you have chosen and leave yourself a way to stop.”

Cook before you leave

Food is the most reliable preparation because it covers both damage and travel demands. Nintendo Support’s beginner guidance tells players to cook meals that restore lost hearts, and its support advice also emphasizes cooking to withstand environmental conditions and restore stamina. That makes a cooking stop useful even when you are not expecting a boss fight.

Healing meals

Keep food that can restore hearts available before entering a cave. Raw ingredients and cooked meals both replenish lost hearts according to Nintendo’s beginner guidance, but cooking is the practical way to turn the ingredients you gathered into supplies you can deliberately reserve for an emergency. Do not wait until Link is nearly defeated to discover that your usable food is somewhere in the inventory; decide which healing items are ready before you cross the cave entrance.

Route-appropriate meals

Environmental conditions can make an otherwise manageable route expensive in stamina or health. Nintendo Support recommends cooking for the conditions you expect and for stamina recovery. The exact recipe depends on the route and the ingredients available to you, so the official guidance does not support one mandatory meal list. Think in two categories: food that keeps Link alive after a hit and food that lets him continue moving when the route itself is demanding.

Glow meals

For darkness, Brightcaps and Glowing Cave Fish can be cooked into meals that give Link a temporary glow effect. This is an option rather than a replacement for portable light. A glow meal affects Link, while a Brightbloom can illuminate the space ahead, allowing you to inspect a route before walking into it.

Build a light plan for darkness

Brightbloom Seeds are found in caves and wells around Hyrule. Nintendo says they illuminate when thrown and can also be fused to an arrow, so collect them even when a current cave is not especially dark. They are useful supplies to keep for a later trip into the Depths; they are not exclusive to the Depths.

Throw a Brightbloom for nearby visibility

Throwing a seed is the low-commitment option when you want to light the area immediately in front of Link. It can reveal the floor, a wall, a ledge, or a nearby enemy before you commit to moving. Use this method when the next section is close enough to inspect and you do not need the light to travel far beyond the current position.

Fuse a Brightbloom to an arrow for forward light

Fusing a seed to an arrow sends the light farther ahead. This is useful when the darkness hides the shape of the next room or the route continues beyond normal throwing distance. The trade-off is that you spend an arrow and a seed together, so reserve this method for places where seeing farther changes your decision, such as an unknown drop, fork, or approach to a monster group.

Use Giant Brightbloom Seeds on vehicles

Nintendo’s official tips also suggest attaching Giant Brightbloom Seeds to vehicles as headlights. That advice is specifically relevant when a vehicle is already part of your route through the Depths. It is not a requirement for ordinary cave exploration, and you should not treat a vehicle as mandatory preparation.

Do not confuse light with safety

Illumination answers the question “What is in front of me?” It does not make a monster harmless. Light a section, pause long enough to identify the route and nearby threats, then choose whether to advance, reposition, or leave. A glow effect can improve your visibility around Link, but it does not replace a forward-looking light source when the terrain ahead is unknown.

Choose weapons without chasing a magic number

Bring weapons you can actually use against the enemies you expect to meet, but do not search for a universal cave weapon rating. Nintendo’s official guidance supports adapting to encounters; it does not publish a fixed weapon strength, durability threshold, or enemy-by-enemy cave loadout for this question.

Inspect your equipment before entering

Check that you have more than one usable weapon option and that you know which item you are willing to use first. The purpose of the check is continuity: if the first weapon breaks or proves inefficient, you should be able to switch rather than stand still in a confined room. This is a decision about your own inventory, not a recommendation for a specific weapon count.

Match confidence to the encounter

If a cave contains enemies that you have already learned to handle, fighting may be a useful way to practice. Nintendo’s beginner guide notes that defeating enemies can provide drops, food, and weapons, as well as practice for later bosses. If your gear is minimal or your confidence is low, the same guide identifies avoiding combat as a valid early-game option.

Keep supplies for the route, not for an imagined perfect run

A cave trip can succeed without defeating every monster. Spending valuable weapons and healing food on an optional group may leave you less prepared for the route beyond it. Decide what the trip is for—finding an exit, collecting an item, opening a passage, or practicing combat—and let that objective determine how much risk is sensible.

Use a pre-entry checklist

A short check prevents most avoidable cave problems. It should take less time than recovering from a reckless encounter.

  • Healing: Confirm that usable food can restore lost hearts.
  • Conditions: Cook or carry meals suited to the environmental demands of the route and to stamina recovery.
  • Light: Carry Brightbloom Seeds; decide whether throwing, arrow-fusing, a glow meal, or a vehicle headlight is appropriate.
  • Weapons: Bring equipment you are comfortable using against the enemies you expect, without assuming an official universal strength or quantity.
  • Exit: Before entering a tight room, notice whether there is ceiling space or another route that could let Ascend provide an escape.
  • Objective: Know whether you are exploring, collecting, practicing, or simply passing through. That choice sets your tolerance for combat.

What to do when the cave is darker than expected

Pause at the last visible safe area

Do not continue walking just because the route appears to go forward. Stop where you can still identify the way back, then create light. A thrown Brightbloom is suitable for checking the nearby floor and walls; an arrow-fused seed is better when you need to inspect farther ahead.

Read the newly lit space before moving

Use the light to identify terrain and threats, not merely to make the screen brighter. Look for a safe landing area, a narrow passage, or enemies positioned around the route. If the newly revealed space changes your plan, retreat while the way back is still clear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use glow meals as sustained support

If the route remains dark for a long time, a cooked Brightcap or Glowing Cave Fish meal can provide Link with a temporary glow effect. Treat that effect as an additional visibility layer. Keep Brightbloom Seeds available for scouting beyond Link’s immediate glow.

How to handle a monster encounter

Make a fight-or-disengage decision

Ask three questions before committing: Is the encounter required for your objective? Are your current weapons and healing food adequate for a mistake? Is there enough room to reposition? If the answer to any of these is unfavorable, leaving is a sound tactical choice, especially early in the game when equipment is limited.

Fight when the risk serves a purpose

Combat can be worthwhile when you want practice or when the enemies provide drops, food, or weapons that support the rest of your journey. Enter with a clear reason rather than treating every monster as a mandatory battle. This keeps optional encounters from consuming supplies needed for the route itself.

Break contact when the room turns against you

If enemies surround Link, Nintendo’s official game tips give a direct suggestion: “if you find yourself surrounded by enemies while exploring a cave, try using Ascend to give yourself a quick exit.” Ascend is an escape option, not a guarantee. It depends on the cave’s geometry; if there is no usable ceiling or the space does not permit it, choose another route or back away before the group closes in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using Ascend as an emergency exit

  1. Recognize the danger: If several enemies have boxed you in, stop trying to trade hits in the middle of the group.
  2. Look for viable overhead space: Ascend only helps where the cave layout gives it a path. Nintendo presents it as a quick-exit suggestion, not a solution for every room.
  3. Activate Ascend: Use the ability to leave the immediate encounter when the geometry allows.
  4. Reassess from safety: Once out of the surrounded position, decide whether to continue, take a healing meal, create light, or abandon the route.
  5. Do not force the attempt: If Ascend cannot find a usable path, retreat by the route you entered or choose another available exit.

The important preparation is recognizing potential Ascend locations before combat starts. A ceiling that looks open from a distance may not provide a usable escape once enemies are moving around you, so keep your route legible and avoid pushing into a dead-end room without a reason.

Ordinary caves: a low-friction preparation routine

For a short cave or well, keep the plan simple. Carry healing food, at least one light option, and weapons appropriate to the encounter. Pick up Brightbloom Seeds you find so future darkness does not become a separate problem. As you move, preserve the entrance route in your awareness. If a group appears, you can choose to fight, retreat, or try Ascend rather than improvising after being surrounded.

Do not over-prepare by creating a rigid inventory formula. Nintendo’s tips explain what the tools do but do not prescribe a fixed cave checklist with exact quantities. The right amount depends on how long you intend to stay, how familiar you are with the enemies, and whether the cave is a destination or a passage to somewhere else.

The Depths: prepare for navigation, not just combat

The Depths require a different emphasis because darkness can hide both terrain and distance. Brightbloom Seeds should be part of the plan before you descend. Throw them to light nearby areas, fuse them to arrows when you need to send light forward, and consider Giant Brightbloom Seeds as vehicle headlights if a vehicle is already part of your route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Glow meals made with Brightcaps or Glowing Cave Fish offer temporary assistance around Link. They can make movement more comfortable, but they do not reveal as much distant terrain as a deliberately placed Brightbloom. Keep a separation between “I can see Link” and “I have inspected the route ahead.”

Because the journey can be longer than a single cave detour, cook meals that restore hearts and support stamina, and account for the environmental conditions you expect. The official advice remains adaptive rather than numerical: there is no Nintendo-published seed count, meal count, or weapon requirement that fits every Depths trip.

When avoiding combat is the best preparation

New players often interpret a monster in the entrance as a demand to prove they can win. Nintendo’s beginner guide says avoiding combat is one option early in the game when equipment is minimal. That is not a failure state; it is resource management. A detour, a retreat, or a later return can preserve food and weapons while you learn the area.

There are good reasons to fight too. Enemies can provide materials, food, and weapons, and combat practice helps prepare you for later bosses. The decision is therefore situational: fight when the reward and practice justify the risk, and leave when the encounter would consume supplies or expose you to a bad position.

Common preparation mistakes and fixes

Entering with no healing food

Symptom: One surprise hit forces an immediate retreat. Fix: Cook before the trip and reserve food that restores lost hearts for actual damage rather than spending every item during routine travel.

Saving every Brightbloom Seed for “later”

Symptom: You walk into unscouted darkness because you do not want to use your light supplies. Fix: Collect seeds in caves and wells, then use them when visibility affects a decision. Nintendo describes both thrown and arrow-fused uses; neither is useful if you refuse to illuminate the route.

Assuming a glow meal lights the whole route

Symptom: Link glows, but the terrain ahead remains uncertain. Fix: Pair the temporary glow effect from Brightcap or Glowing Cave Fish meals with Brightbloom scouting when you need distant information.

Fighting after being surrounded

Symptom: Enemies remove your room to maneuver. Fix: Check whether Ascend can provide a quick exit, or retreat by another route before the group closes in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Searching for an official “correct” loadout

Symptom: You delay exploring because you cannot meet an imagined seed, meal, or weapon quota. Fix: Use the route-based checklist. Nintendo’s published guidance gives functions and choices, not a universal quantity.

If a mechanic or objective is unclear

Nintendo Support advises checking the in-game controls and the hints in the Adventure Log when a task or mechanic is unclear. Use those references before assuming a cave requires a particular item or combat technique. The game’s own prompts are more relevant to the current situation than a generic loadout rule, especially when terrain determines whether an escape ability can work.

What you need to play

This preparation advice concerns The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom itself. Nintendo lists the game for Nintendo Switch and also presents a Switch 2 Edition and upgrade-pack context. Verify the edition and platform compatibility for the system you own before purchase. No additional physical gear is required to follow the in-game preparation methods described here.

A practical decision flow at the cave entrance

  1. Identify the route: Is this a short ordinary cave, a well, or a dark Depths journey?
  2. Check supplies: Do you have healing food, route-appropriate meals, a light method, and usable weapons?
  3. Set a visibility method: Choose a thrown Brightbloom, an arrow-fused Brightbloom, a glow meal, or a vehicle headlight where relevant.
  4. Scout before committing: Illuminate enough of the next area to see terrain and enemy placement.
  5. Choose combat deliberately: Fight if the objective, equipment, and space justify it; otherwise avoid or retreat.
  6. Keep an exit available: If enemies surround you, try Ascend where the cave geometry permits, or leave by another route.
  7. Stop when the risk exceeds the goal: A later return with better equipment is a valid outcome.

Key takeaways

  • Cook meals that restore hearts and help with environmental conditions or stamina demands.
  • Use Brightbloom Seeds for darkness; throw them for nearby light or fuse them to arrows to send light forward.
  • Brightcaps and Glowing Cave Fish provide a temporary glow effect when cooked.
  • Keep the Depths distinct from ordinary caves: navigation and forward lighting matter more there.
  • When surrounded, try Ascend for a quick exit if the cave has usable overhead space.
  • Early-game players can avoid combat when equipment is weak; fighting is optional, though enemies can provide drops and practice.
  • There is no official universal number of seeds, meals, or weapons to carry.
