Prepare for robotic surgery with the instructions for your specific operation, not a generic robot-surgery checklist. Before the procedure, confirm medication changes, fasting and any bowel or skin preparation with your surgical and anesthesia teams; arrange transportation and help at home; and learn whether you will leave with a catheter, drain, dressing or other device. Recovery usually progresses through pain control, eating and drinking as allowed, safe walking and incision or device care, but lifting, driving, bathing and return-to-work limits depend on the operation and your health.
Robotic surgery is surgeon-controlled: the robot does not make decisions or operate independently. MedlinePlus notes that robotic assistance is not usable or best for every problem, and its risks differ from—not disappear compared with—open or conventional laparoscopic surgery. Your written discharge instructions and the procedure-specific emergency contact plan take priority over any general advice here.

What “robotic surgery” means for your preparation
In robotic-assisted surgery, the surgeon operates from a console while instruments attached to robotic arms move inside the body. The system can provide a magnified view and precise instrument movement, but it does not choose where to cut, diagnose a complication or replace the surgeon. The operation, anesthesia, incision sites and recovery plan still determine what you must do.

Build your individualized plan before the operation
Bring a complete health and medication history
At the preoperative assessment, provide an up-to-date list of every prescription and over-the-counter medicine, vitamin, mineral, herb and other supplement. Include the dose, how often you take it and when you last took it. Tell the team about allergies and previous reactions, loose teeth, neurological conditions, heart or lung disease, stomach or endocrine conditions, alcohol or drug use, and nausea or other problems with earlier anesthesia. These details help the clinicians plan anesthesia and reduce avoidable surprises.
Ask who will give you final instructions and how you will receive them. Keep the written plan, medication list and hospital telephone numbers together so the person helping you at home can find them.
Confirm every medication change
Do not copy another patient’s stop date or dose. Blood thinners, diabetes medicines, anti-inflammatory pain medicines, medicines for anxiety or sleep, and supplements can require different plans. Some medicines should not be stopped abruptly. Ask, for each regular medicine:
- Should I take it on the morning of surgery, and with how much water?
- If it must be held, when should I stop and restart it?
- Do I need a different diabetes dose while I am fasting?
- What should I do if I accidentally take a dose or miss one?
- Which pain medicines, laxatives or other prescriptions will I use after discharge?
Only the clinician who knows your operation and medical history can answer those questions safely. Record the answer rather than relying on memory.
Get the exact fasting and preparation instructions
Ask the facility for the precise time to stop solid food, milk, clear liquids and chewing gum or sweets. Also ask whether you need a bowel preparation, special shower, skin-cleaning product or hair-removal instruction. General examples in American College of Surgeons guidance do not override the hospital’s timing or the instructions for your operation. If the written directions conflict, call the surgical team before you begin.

Plan transportation and the first night
Ask whether you must have an adult drive you home and stay with you. Anesthesia, pain medicines and the operation itself can make driving unsafe even when you feel alert. Arrange a responsible ride in advance, and identify a backup.

Plan practical support for the first days: groceries, easy meals, childcare, pet care, laundry, shopping and chores that involve bending, reaching or lifting. NHS guidance for gynecologic pathways specifically recommends arranging transport and help; the amount of support you need for another operation may be greater or smaller. Tell your helper what the discharge team says about medicines, walking and warning signs.
Questions to take to the surgical visit
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What exact operation and approach are planned? | The organ treated and the incision pattern determine restrictions and wound care. |
| How long might I stay, and what must be true before discharge? | Some pathways discharge patients the same day; others require observation. A procedure-specific plan is more reliable than a general estimate. |
| Will I have a urinary catheter, drain, dressing, stoma or other device? | You may need teaching, supplies or another person’s help at home. |
| Which medicines change before and after surgery? | Stopping or restarting a medicine incorrectly can be dangerous. |
| When may I shower, climb stairs, lift, drive, exercise and work? | These limits vary by operation, healing and medication use. |
| Whom do I call overnight or at the weekend? | Use the procedure’s own contact route instead of searching for a generic number. |
The day before and the day of surgery
The day before
- Review the written fasting, medication, bowel and skin-preparation instructions.
- Collect prescribed medicines and any clinician-directed supplies. Do not buy wound or catheter products “just in case.”
- Set out loose clothing and shoes that are easy to put on without bending deeply. Pack identification, medication information, glasses or hearing aids and the contact details for your ride.
- Charge your phone and tell your support person the expected arrival time and hospital location.
- Follow the facility’s bathing and skin-preparation directions. Do not apply unapproved creams, lotions or deodorant to the operative area if the instructions prohibit them.
At arrival
Tell the admitting and anesthesia teams about any new fever, cough, infection, rash, pregnancy possibility, medicine change or food and drink after the cutoff. Bring your allergy and medication list even if it was submitted electronically. Confirm how you will receive discharge instructions and prescriptions.
The anesthesia clinician may ask again about previous nausea, airway or dental issues and health conditions. Repeating information is a safety check, not a sign that your earlier answers were ignored.
How discharge is decided
Discharge is based on the operation, anesthesia recovery and your ability to manage safely—not simply on the fact that the procedure used a robot. A UCLH pelvic-organ-prolapse pathway describes discharge after a patient can eat and drink, urinate, move safely and control pain with tablets. That is an example of one local pathway, not a universal checklist.

Make essentials easy to reach
Put water, approved medicines, your phone charger, tissues, a thermometer if the team recommends one, and the discharge sheet within easy reach of your resting place. Clear walking paths, secure loose rugs and arrange a night light for trips to the bathroom. Keep frequently used food and toiletries at waist height so you do not need to climb or lift.
Have a support person available
For the period specified by your hospital, have an adult who can help with meals, medicines, toileting, device care and contacting the team. The exact requirement depends on anesthesia, the operation and your health. If you live alone, tell the surgical team before the operation so they can discuss a safer discharge or community support.
Expect fatigue and plan rest
Feeling tired, moving slowly or needing naps can occur after anesthesia and surgery. Rest between short activities, but follow the team’s instructions about getting up and walking. Do not remain in bed continuously unless your clinicians specifically tell you to do so.

Use the prescribed pain plan
Take prescribed pain medicine exactly as directed and ask before adding an over-the-counter product. Different medicines can contain the same ingredient, and some interact with blood thinners, sedatives or other prescriptions. Call the care team if pain is not controlled by the written plan, if a medicine causes concerning effects, or if you are unsure whether to take the next dose.
Advance eating and drinking as instructed
Start with the foods and fluids allowed on your discharge sheet. Small, simple meals may be easier initially, but the correct fluid amount, fiber target and bowel regimen depend on the operation and your medical conditions. Operation-specific leaflets may give detailed advice about fluids, fiber, painkillers or laxatives; do not transfer those quantities to a different procedure.
Address constipation safely
Anesthesia, reduced activity, opioid pain medicine and changes in diet can affect bowel movements. Ask whether a laxative or stool-softener is part of your plan and when to call if you cannot pass stool or gas. Do not start a product, increase a dose or force fluids without checking when you have kidney, heart or other fluid restrictions.

Walking, breathing and other activity
Many patients are encouraged to get up and walk gently soon after surgery, with assistance until they are steady. A procedure-specific MedlinePlus prostatectomy guide also describes walking and breathing exercises. These measures are not permission to exercise vigorously, lift heavy objects or climb without help.
Follow the operation’s limits for lifting, abdominal strain, bending, sexual activity, stairs and exercise. Stop and ask for advice if activity causes worsening pain, dizziness, faintness, shortness of breath or bleeding. Keep a record of what you can do comfortably rather than comparing yourself with another patient.
Driving and work
Do not drive while taking medicines that impair alertness, while movement is restricted, or until your surgeon and insurer’s requirements are met. You must be able to sit, turn, use the controls and perform an emergency stop safely. Return-to-work timing depends on the physical demands of the job and the operation. In two different UCLH gynecologic pathways, suggested absence was six weeks for pelvic-organ-prolapse surgery and two weeks for bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Those contrasting figures show why no single robotic-surgery return date is valid.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Incisions, dressings, catheters and drains
Ask what you will actually take home
Robotic surgery does not automatically require special equipment. Some patients leave with small dressings only; others may have a urinary catheter, drain, compression device or additional dressing. A prostatectomy pathway may include a catheter and teaching about wound care, but that is not a universal robotic-surgery requirement.
Before discharge, ask:
- When and how should each dressing be changed?
- May the incision get wet, and when is bathing allowed?
- What drainage, swelling, bruising or redness is expected?
- How do I empty, measure or secure a drain or catheter?
- What supplies will the hospital provide, and where can I obtain replacements?
- Who should I call if the device leaks, blocks, comes out or becomes painful?
Keep the site clean and dry exactly as instructed. Do not apply antiseptic, ointment, powder or adhesive unless the team recommends it. Never pull out a catheter or drain yourself unless you have explicit instructions and the appropriate follow-up plan.

Recognize problems and use the correct contact route
Your discharge sheet should list procedure-specific warning signs and a telephone number. Use that plan first for questions about pain, medicines, urine, bowel function, dressings or devices. If you cannot reach the team and symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening, use local emergency services.
Best Value
For patients in one UCLH robotic pelvic-organ-prolapse pathway, the instruction is to go to the nearest Accident and Emergency Department for:
- high fever;
- worsening abdominal pain or swelling;
- inability to pass urine or very little urine;
- swelling, redness or tenderness in the lower legs;
- difficulty breathing; or
- chest pain.
This list is an example tied to that pathway, not an exhaustive warning list for every robotic operation. A different operation may require urgent assessment for other symptoms, such as heavy bleeding, a separated incision, persistent vomiting or a device problem. Follow your own written instructions.
Troubleshoot common uncertainties before they become emergencies
“I am not sure whether to take a medicine.”
Do not guess or search for another patient’s schedule. Call the surgeon’s office, preoperative clinic, anesthesia service or the number on your discharge sheet and state the medicine, dose, last dose and procedure date.
“The pain plan is not working.”
Check the prescribed timing, avoid doubling doses and contact the care team. Report pain that is suddenly worse, associated with fever, increasing swelling, breathing difficulty or inability to urinate as an urgent problem.
“I do not understand catheter, drain or dressing care.”
Pause and ask for a demonstration or written instructions. Have your helper speak with the nurse. An unclear instruction is a reason to call, not a reason to improvise supplies or remove a device.
“I was told different things by two people.”
Ask which instruction is the final, procedure-specific plan and request it in writing. Bring the discrepancy to the surgeon or anesthesia team before changing medicines, eating, drinking or activity.
How to judge different surgical options
If your surgeon is discussing robotic, laparoscopic or open approaches, compare the specific operation rather than assuming the robot is automatically safer or faster. Ask about:
Recommended Free Tools
| Comparison point | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Operation and surgical approach | What will be done, where are the incisions, and could the approach change during surgery? |
| Health and anesthesia considerations | How do your heart, lung, neurological, endocrine or other conditions affect risk and recovery? |
| Hospital stay | What discharge criteria apply, and is an overnight stay possible? |
| Devices and wound care | Will you have a catheter, drain, dressing or other care task at home? |
| Restrictions | What are the limits for lifting, driving, exercise, sex and work? |
| Home support | What help is needed, for how long, and what happens if you live alone? |
MedlinePlus emphasizes that robotic assistance cannot always be used or be the best method for a particular problem. The relevant choice is the approach your surgeon recommends for your diagnosis, anatomy, health and goals after discussing alternatives.
