How to Prepare for a Volcanic Eruption: A Practical Checklist for Homes and Families

The safest household plan has two branches: an evacuation plan for an official order to leave and a sheltering plan for periods when authorities say staying indoors will reduce ash exposure. Build both plans before an alert, practice how you will communicate, and keep following local instructions as the situation changes. Volcano hazards, warning systems, evacuation zones, routes and shelters differ by location, so use your local emergency-management office and the relevant volcano observatory rather than treating this as a substitute for local direction.

Why you need two different plans

An eruption can produce hazards that make leaving necessary in one area while temporary indoor shelter is appropriate in another. The correct response depends on the volcano, wind, ashfall, lahars and other local conditions, as well as the instructions issued for your address. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance, updated and reviewed August 25, 2026, puts the decision plainly: “Follow the advice of local officials for information on preparing for a volcanic eruption.” Do not decide that staying home is always safe, and do not leave by an improvised route when officials have issued a designated evacuation route.

Situation Primary objective What your household does Information priority
Officials order evacuation Move out of the risk area promptly Collect essential items if it is safe, take pets where possible, use the designated route and follow transport instructions. Local emergency-management alerts and instructions; route and shelter changes can occur.
Authorities direct temporary sheltering from ash Limit ash entering the home and reduce exposure Close and lock openings, shut down systems that draw outside air, use an interior room above ground, and keep monitoring official updates. Official updates may later change the advice to evacuation.

Discuss both branches with every household member, including children and anyone who may need assistance. A plan that only one person understands can fail if that person is away when an alert arrives.

Start with the hazards and instructions for your address

Identify your zone, routes and shelter options

Ask your local emergency-management office which volcanic-hazard zone includes your home, work, school and regular travel routes. Record the evacuation routes designated for your zone, the places authorities use for temporary shelter, and the alert channels that apply to your address. A generic national checklist cannot tell you whether a particular road, bridge or shelter is usable during your eruption.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Find the relevant volcano observatory or monitoring authority for your area and learn how it communicates changes in activity. For U.S.-monitored volcanoes, the U.S. Geological Survey’s Volcano Notification Service (VNS) is a free email-notification service. You can select a volcano and the types of notices you want. VNS does not send text messages directly; forwarding its emails through a carrier’s email-to-text gateway has mixed results, so keep another official alert channel enabled.

Write a household decision rule

Put the two actions in plain language where everyone can see them: “If officials order our area to evacuate, we leave by the designated route,” and “If authorities direct us to shelter from ash, we use the indoor shelter plan and continue monitoring for further instructions.” Include a way to communicate if household members are separated and a method for confirming that everyone has received an alert. Practice the communication method rather than assuming a message will be noticed during a stressful event.

Account for individual needs

List each person’s medicines, mobility or respiratory needs, communication requirements and the help they may need to travel. FEMA’s household guidance also calls for accounting for each person’s specific needs, including medication, as well as pets. Decide who will help a child, older adult or person who cannot drive, and identify a destination that can accommodate the household if evacuation is ordered.

Assemble a kit before an alert

Keep core supplies together where they can be carried quickly. The CDC’s eruption checklist names the items below. Choose quantities and formats for the people, medicines and pets in your household rather than assuming a one-size-fits-all kit.

Supply What to prepare When it matters
Light Flashlight plus extra batteries. Power loss, smoke or a dark evacuation route.
First aid First-aid kit and its manual. Minor injuries when normal services are disrupted.
Food and water Emergency food and water that your household can use without relying on a powered appliance. Evacuation delays or time indoors.
Can opener Manual can opener. Opening canned emergency food without electricity.
Medicines Essential medicines; if evacuation is possible, CDC advises having at least a one-week supply of prescription medicines. Leave with medicines whenever they can be collected safely and without delaying departure.
Footwear Sturdy shoes for every household member. Broken surfaces, ash-covered ground and walking if traffic stops.
Respiratory protection NIOSH-approved N95 respirators for outdoor exposure or cleaning ash that has entered indoors; follow the respirator’s directions. Ash can harm the respiratory tract. A nuisance dust mask is less protective and is only a last resort, not an equivalent substitute.
Eye protection Goggles. Limit ash contact with the eyes during outdoor exposure or cleanup.
Information Battery-powered radio and the batteries it requires. Continue receiving official instructions when internet or cellular service is unreliable.

Store supplies where they are accessible on the way out, and keep the radio, lights and respirators together so they are not scattered through the house. Include household-specific medicines and equipment, plus food and water for pets. A kit is not complete if one person’s prescription, mobility aid or pet supply is missing.

When officials order an evacuation

1. Confirm the instruction and act promptly

Follow the order from local authorities even if conditions at your home appear calm. An eruption’s danger can change faster than visible conditions, and authorities may designate routes because other roads can be blocked. Do not wait for a second message or attempt to watch the eruption before leaving.

2. Use the designated route

Take the route specified for your zone. Expect congestion and delays, and do not assume that a familiar shortcut or an alternate road is open. Keep receiving official updates while traveling; instructions may change the route, destination or timing.

3. Prepare transportation without delaying departure

If you are using a vehicle, fill the gas tank before an order if possible and keep a vehicle kit with the household’s essentials. If no vehicle is available, arrange a ride with friends or family in advance, or follow directions for official transport. Make the transportation plan workable for people who need assistance and for pets.

4. Take essential items and medicines

Take the kit, identification and essential medicines that are safe to collect. The CDC’s evacuation guidance calls for at least a one-week supply of prescription medicines. Do not spend so long packing that you postpone departure; leave immediately when authorities say to go and collect only what can be gathered safely.

5. Take pets, with a destination already identified

Plan to take pets with you. Many emergency shelters cannot accept animals, so confirm a pet-friendly destination or shelter option before an eruption. Keep carriers, leashes, food and water with the evacuation supplies. If an official shelter cannot accept a pet, follow local emergency-management directions rather than abandoning the animal or delaying evacuation while searching.

6. Shut off utilities only if there is time and it is safe

CDC says that, if time allows, you can turn off gas, electricity and water and disconnect appliances. These are secondary tasks: never delay an evacuation order to perform a shutoff, and do not enter an unsafe area to reach a utility control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Treat heavy ash as a driving hazard

FEMA’s volcano hazard sheet warns against driving in heavy ash because ash can clog engines and stall vehicles. If heavy ash is present, follow authorities’ transportation instructions instead of assuming a private car is the safest option.

When authorities direct sheltering from ash

1. Verify that sheltering is the current instruction

Use the radio and official alerts to confirm that your area should shelter. Authorities can order evacuation for places at greatest risk even while other areas are told to remain indoors. Keep monitoring throughout the event; sheltering is not permission to ignore a later evacuation order.

2. Stop outside air from entering unnecessarily

Close and lock exterior doors and windows. Turn off heating and air-conditioning systems and fans, and close the fireplace damper. FEMA also advises covering ventilation openings and sealing doors and windows when taking temporary shelter from ash. These steps reduce the movement of ash into the living space.

3. Choose an interior room

Use an above-ground interior room without windows as the household’s shelter space. Bring the radio, lights, water, medicines and other essential supplies there so no one needs to move through ash unnecessarily. Keep the room available for everyone who may be home, including pets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Bring pets inside and provide their supplies

Bring pets indoors and include their food and water. A sheltering plan should identify where each animal can stay without blocking exits or preventing household members from accessing medicines and communication equipment.

Protect lungs and eyes from ash

Use the right respirator for the task

CDC recommends a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator when you are outdoors in ash or cleaning ash that has entered indoors. Follow the directions supplied with the respirator, including how it is fitted and worn. Approval and fit matter; a respirator is not a guarantee that every condition is safe, and one size or model will not fit every person.

A nuisance dust mask provides less protection and is a last resort when an approved N95 is unavailable. It is not an equivalent replacement. Do not let a mask choice encourage unnecessary outdoor exposure: remain indoors when authorities direct sheltering and limit cleanup to what can be done safely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect eyes and avoid untrained roof work

Wear goggles when ash exposure is possible, as listed by CDC. FEMA cautions against getting on a roof to remove ash without appropriate guidance or training. A roof can become hazardous under ash load, and attempting cleanup without direction can create a fall or structural risk. Wait for local instructions on any roof work.

Communication, alerts and separated household members

Write down the communication method everyone will use, how a person who is away from home will learn the decision, and where household members should go if normal contact fails. Practice the plan with children and anyone who may need assistance. Keep the battery-powered radio available even if you normally rely on a phone or internet connection.

For U.S.-monitored volcanoes, configure USGS VNS for the volcano and notices relevant to you, but do not treat it as a direct texting service. Its page says that it sends email and that carrier email-to-text delivery can be inconsistent. Pair it with the alert channels identified by your local emergency-management office.

Common planning failures and the correction

Failure Why it causes trouble Correction before an eruption
Using a generic route or shelter Volcanic hazard zones, blocked roads and shelter capacity are local. Record the route, zone and shelter information issued for your address and review it with the household.
Assuming a VNS email is a text alert VNS does not send texts directly, and email-to-text forwarding may fail. Enable local official alerts and keep a battery-powered radio as a separate channel.
Leaving pets out of the destination plan Many emergency shelters cannot accept animals. Identify a pet-friendly destination or shelter and keep carriers, food and water ready.
Waiting to pack prescriptions Evacuation time may be limited, and missing medicine can create a second emergency. Keep essential medicines with the kit and plan for at least one week of prescriptions when evacuation is possible.
Driving through heavy ash Ash can clog an engine and stall a vehicle. Follow official transport directions and avoid driving in heavy ash.
Opening the house to check conditions Opening doors, windows or fans can draw ash indoors during a shelter order. Use the radio and official alerts for updates while keeping the shelter configuration intact.
Climbing onto the roof without guidance Ash-covered roofs and cleanup work can be dangerous. Wait for local guidance or trained assistance before attempting roof cleanup.

A household rehearsal you can complete before an alert

  1. Show everyone the two decision branches: designated-route evacuation and indoor ash sheltering.
  2. Walk through the home to identify the above-ground interior room without windows and verify that doors, windows, fans, heating and air-conditioning controls can be operated.
  3. Place the flashlight, batteries, radio, respirators, goggles, first-aid supplies, food, water, can opener, sturdy shoes and medicines together where they can be carried quickly.
  4. Have each person explain how they will receive an alert and communicate if separated.
  5. Check that transportation is available, the vehicle can be fueled, or a ride and official-transport option has been arranged.
  6. Practice moving pets with carriers or leashes and confirm the destination will accept them.
  7. Review the plan whenever local authorities change zones, routes, shelters or alert channels.

What this checklist can—and cannot—decide

This is general, U.S.-oriented preparedness guidance based on CDC, FEMA and USGS material; it is not a hazard assessment for a particular volcano or address. The CDC page was updated and reviewed August 25, 2026. The USGS VNS page is a live service whose delivery features can change. Local emergency-management officials and the relevant volcano observatory determine whether your area should evacuate, shelter, use a specific route or go to a particular shelter. When their instructions conflict with a prewritten household preference, follow the current official instruction.
