How to Prepare for a Technical Interview at a Large IT Services Company

The most reliable preparation is role-specific: start with the vacancy and interview invitation, then practice the technologies, problem-solving tasks, communication, and project discussions that the employer actually describes. Large IT services companies do not use one universal interview sequence. The number of rounds, assessment type, coding requirements, geography, and hiring program can all change.

Your goal is not to memorize a rumored question list. It is to show that you can apply relevant technical knowledge, explain your reasoning, work with others, and take responsibility for the work on your resume under the conditions in the invitation.

What the interview is really testing

A technical interview at a large services company usually combines several judgments rather than testing facts in isolation. Interviewers need evidence that you can perform the role they are hiring for, communicate with a client or delivery team, and learn when a project requires unfamiliar tools.

  • Applied technical ability: Can you use the language, framework, platform, database, testing method, or infrastructure named in the vacancy?
  • Problem-solving: Can you clarify an ambiguous requirement, break a problem into parts, choose a sensible approach, and check the result?
  • Communication: Can another engineer follow your assumptions, trade-offs, and decisions?
  • Ownership: Can you distinguish your own contribution from the work of the wider team and explain what happened when something went wrong?
  • Collaboration and adaptability: Can you handle disagreement, feedback, changing priorities, and work across teams or with a customer?

Accenture says some roles use online assessments covering technical skills, strengths, or decision-making. Its assessment guidance says candidates may be evaluated on problem-solving, logical reasoning, applied knowledge, and their approach to solving problems, not only the final answer. That is a useful model for preparation, but it describes some Accenture roles rather than every large employer or every application. Read the Accenture careers guidance and your own invitation for the applicable format.

Start with the vacancy and invitation

Before opening a study plan, extract the information that controls what you should practise. Copy the wording into a one-page checklist and mark anything that is unclear.

Build a process map

  1. List the stages. Note whether the invitation names an online test, recruiter call, technical interview, coding exercise, behavioral interview, panel, client discussion, or final conversation.
  2. Record the conditions. Capture the date, time zone, expected duration, video platform, coding tool, permitted reference material, device requirements, identity checks, and any proctoring or integrity rules.
  3. Extract the role scope. Highlight every named technology, responsibility, operating environment, seniority expectation, and domain term in the vacancy.
  4. Mark unknowns. If the invitation does not say whether coding is live, whether a particular language is allowed, or how many stages remain, ask the recruiter rather than relying on an internet rumor.

Do not infer a fixed sequence from a different role, country, or graduate cohort. Capgemini says its recruitment process can combine behavioral, technical, and cultural-fit interviews and assessments, while its India interview guidance says the number of rounds and assessment types vary. The India page also says the timeline depends on the role, business need, and candidate profile. Treat that as India-specific guidance, not a worldwide promise. See Capgemini’s general recruitment process and Capgemini India’s interview tips.

Use a decision rule when information is missing

Give priority to evidence in this order: the written invitation, the vacancy, a recruiter’s clarification, the employer’s page for the exact program, and only then general practice advice. A post describing one candidate’s experience can suggest possibilities, but it cannot establish what your interview will contain.

Turn the vacancy into a technical syllabus

Study deeply enough to apply the skills, not broadly enough to recognize thousands of keywords. Divide the vacancy into four lists.

Core implementation skills

For each required language or framework, prepare a small working set: data types and control flow, common collections, error handling, modular design, testing, debugging, and the framework’s central execution model. Be able to write a short example without searching for syntax. If the role names a version or platform, use that version’s terminology and note any differences from what you have used.

Data, systems, and quality

Map the surrounding skills to the job. A backend role may require SQL joins and indexes, API design, concurrency, caching, and observability. A cloud role may require identity, networking, deployment, monitoring, and cost or reliability trade-offs. A testing role may require test levels, automation strategy, defect isolation, and risk-based coverage. Do not spend equal time on topics that the vacancy never mentions.

Domain and delivery context

Services work often involves requirements from a client, handoffs between teams, release constraints, and support after deployment. Prepare to explain how you would clarify acceptance criteria, document an interface, handle a production incident, or communicate a delay. Keep examples factual; do not imply authority you did not have.

Priority matrix

Evidence in the vacancy Preparation priority What “ready” looks like
Required technology used in daily responsibilities Highest You can implement a representative task, explain design choices, and diagnose a likely failure.
Preferred technology or adjacent tool Medium You can describe the concept, relate it to your experience, and state what you would learn first.
Generic corporate or domain language Context You can connect it to delivery, customers, quality, security, or teamwork without reciting slogans.

Prepare every project and resume claim

Interviewers often use your resume as the most specific source of questions. For each project, prepare a two-minute explanation and a deeper version that can withstand follow-up questions.

Use a project evidence sheet

  • Problem: What user, business, operational, or technical problem existed?
  • Your responsibility: Which components, decisions, tickets, tests, or investigations did you personally own?
  • Constraints: What limited time, data, compatibility, security, budget, or reliability?
  • Decision: Which alternatives did you consider, and why did you choose this design or tool?
  • Result: What changed? Use a measured result only when you can explain how it was measured.
  • Failure or trade-off: What did not work, what did you learn, and what would you change now?
  • Collaboration: Who depended on your work, how did you coordinate, and how did you resolve disagreement?

Be precise about ownership. Saying “we built” is appropriate for a team outcome, but be ready to identify your own code, analysis, decisions, and communication. If you inherited a component, say so and explain what you changed.

Rehearse technical follow-ups

For every substantial claim, expect questions such as: Why this database? What happens at higher load? How did you test it? What was the hardest bug? How did you roll back? What would you monitor? What would you do differently? Write concise answers, then practise saying them without reading. This exposes gaps faster than rereading your resume.

Practise applied technical problem-solving

Choose exercises that resemble the role instead of collecting a large catalogue of alleged interview questions. A useful practice session has four phases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Clarify. Restate the problem, ask about inputs and outputs, identify constraints, and name assumptions before proposing a solution.
  2. Plan. Describe a simple baseline, then improve it if the constraints require better time, space, reliability, or maintainability.
  3. Work visibly. Talk through data structures, control flow, interfaces, queries, diagrams, or configuration as you create them. Mention edge cases before the interviewer has to prompt you.
  4. Validate. Walk through a normal example, a boundary case, an invalid input, and a likely failure. State complexity or operational impact where it matters.

For a coding problem, correctness comes before optimization. For a system-design or troubleshooting problem, make the operational assumptions explicit: traffic, data volume, latency, availability, security, deployment model, and who owns the next action. If you do not know a tool, explain the underlying concept and how you would verify the detail.

Use a feedback rubric

  • Did you ask enough questions to define the task?
  • Could another engineer understand your approach from your explanation?
  • Did you test edge cases rather than stop at the happy path?
  • Did you notice a mistake and recover calmly?
  • Did you distinguish a known fact from an assumption?
  • Did you leave time to summarize the result and remaining risks?

Practise explaining a wrong turn as well as a perfect solution. Assessment guidance from Accenture specifically emphasizes the candidate’s approach, so silent trial-and-error hides evidence you want the interviewer to see.

Prepare for coding and live-coding formats

Some hiring routes include a coding test; others use discussion, a take-home task, or no coding at all. Confirm the format before weighting your schedule toward it.

Timed coding assessment

Practise in the language and editor you are likely to use. Set a timer, read the complete prompt before coding, and reserve time to run or mentally execute tests. Keep a short checklist for null or empty input, duplicate values, boundary indexes, integer limits, malformed data, and performance at the stated scale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Live coding

In a live session, narrate the plan, keep the code readable, and invite clarification at natural checkpoints. If a test fails, isolate the smallest failing case, state the hypothesis, and change one thing at a time. Do not erase the evidence of your reasoning to make the final code look effortless.

The Infosys Power Programmers page describes a specialized program with two coding rounds followed by three technical interviews involving hands-on live coding across technology areas. That sequence is evidence for that program, not a template for all Infosys roles or all large IT services interviews. Use the exact program page and invitation when deciding how much live-coding practice you need: Infosys Power Programmers.

When you cannot finish

Deliver a correct partial solution, explain the missing piece, and identify the next test or design change. A transparent boundary is more useful than claiming completion. If the interviewer offers a hint, incorporate it explicitly and continue from the revised assumption.

Build behavioral and collaboration evidence

Technical ability is only one part of many services-company processes. Capgemini advises candidates to bring examples of their work, problem-solving, and collaboration, and says its process may include behavioral and cultural-fit evaluation.

Prepare six factual stories

Have one example for each situation below, preferably from work, an internship, a substantial project, or a realistic academic team:

  • A disagreement about a technical or delivery decision.
  • A difficult defect, outage, or investigation.
  • A time you learned an unfamiliar tool under pressure.
  • A priority conflict or changing requirement.
  • A mistake, missed estimate, or piece of feedback that changed your practice.
  • A collaboration across teams, locations, disciplines, or a customer boundary.

Structure each story as situation, your specific actions, result, and lesson. Keep the chronology clear and quantify an outcome only when the number is defensible. Explain what you would do differently now; that demonstrates learning without pretending the original decision was perfect.

Handle “why this company?” precisely

Research the employer’s services, relevant sector, delivery model, and the work connected to the role. Then connect one or two findings to your skills and interests. Capgemini recommends learning about the company and relevant work, along with the people you may work with. Avoid repeating generic mission language or claiming knowledge of a project that the public information does not establish.

Understand the employer-specific evidence without overgeneralizing

Official pages illustrate why you should verify the route you are entering.

Employer or route What the official page establishes How to use it
Accenture roles Interview number and format depend on the role. Some roles use online assessments covering technical skills, strengths, or decision-making; the described assessment typically takes about 30–90 minutes, while the invitation supplies the actual limit. Prepare for applied reasoning and read the opening instructions. Do not assume the assessment replaces interviews; Accenture says it does not.
Capgemini recruitment A process may combine behavioral, technical, and cultural-fit interviews and assessments. Prepare both technical examples and collaboration evidence.
Capgemini India Rounds and assessment types vary; timing depends on role, business need, and candidate profile. Apply this guidance to India-based applications and confirm your own timeline.
Infosys Power Programmers The specialized program describes two coding rounds and three technical interviews with hands-on live coding across technology areas. Use it only when applying to that program; do not generalize the sequence.
TCS All India NQT For the 2024, 2025, and 2026 graduate batches in India, the test has Foundation and Advanced sections. Advanced is mandatory for candidates aspiring to Digital or Prime offers, and performance determines interview shortlisting. Check that your cohort and offer route match the page before using its structure as a checklist.

Prepare the assessment environment

Logistics can decide whether your technical ability is visible. Follow the invitation over generic advice.

  1. Use the specified laptop or desktop, browser, operating system, camera, microphone, and coding environment.
  2. Run any required compatibility check before the assessment window, not minutes before it.
  3. Choose a quiet location and block enough uninterrupted time for the stated limit plus sign-in.
  4. Verify power, stable internet, charger access, and a backup contact method allowed by the employer.
  5. Close unauthorized applications and remove notes or devices that the integrity rules prohibit.
  6. Keep the invitation, identification requirements, and recruiter contact available without opening unapproved material during the test.

For the online assessment it describes, Accenture advises reading the opening instructions and time limit, arranging uninterrupted time, having stable internet, and using a laptop or desktop coding environment. Its page gives approximately 30–90 minutes as a typical duration for that assessment, but your invitation controls the actual limit.

If technology fails

Take a screenshot or note the exact error and time, then use the support or recruiter channel named in the invitation. Do not repeatedly refresh a proctored test unless its instructions say that is safe. Explain what you attempted and wait for the authorized recovery step.

A practical two-week preparation plan

Adjust the schedule to the notice you have; the sequence matters more than the exact number of days.

Days 1–2: establish scope

  • Annotate the vacancy and invitation.
  • Confirm format, language, tools, timing, and geography-specific conditions.
  • Build the technical priority matrix and list resume projects likely to attract questions.

Days 3–5: close the highest-value technical gaps

  • Review the core language, framework, platform, or database named as required.
  • Complete representative problems at the expected difficulty.
  • Create a one-page reference of commands, design patterns, test strategies, or failure modes that you are allowed to review before—not during—the assessment.

Days 6–7: practise under interview conditions

  • Run at least one timed problem set or mock interview.
  • Speak your assumptions and test cases aloud.
  • Record recurring gaps, such as complexity analysis, SQL joins, debugging, or explaining trade-offs.

Days 8–10: prepare project and behavioral evidence

  • Complete the project evidence sheet for every major resume claim.
  • Rehearse the six collaboration and learning stories.
  • Research the employer’s services, sector, and role context.

Days 11–12: simulate the exact route

  • Use the likely device, editor, camera, and time limit.
  • Practise one technical discussion and one behavioral discussion in the same session.
  • Fix only high-impact gaps; do not replace your entire study plan with a new topic.

Days 13–14: consolidate and rest

  • Review assumptions, formulas, commands, and project facts.
  • Prepare concise questions for the interviewer.
  • Confirm logistics and stop heavy studying early enough to arrive rested.

Interview-day playbook

At the start

Confirm the agenda and ask how the interviewer would like you to share code or diagrams. For a technical prompt, restate the task and constraints before solving. For a project question, identify the specific part you owned before describing the team result.

During technical work

Keep a visible sequence: assumptions, approach, implementation or design, validation, and trade-offs. Ask for clarification when a requirement changes the answer. If you discover an error, say what changed, correct it, and rerun the relevant reasoning.

During behavioral questions

Answer the question asked, keep the story chronological, and use “I” for your actions and “we” for the team outcome. Avoid confidential client data; describe the technical situation at a safe level.

At the end

Ask questions that reveal the work rather than facts already on the careers page:

  • What technical problem would this person address first?
  • How are design decisions reviewed and documented?
  • What does onboarding look like in the first few months?
  • How does the team measure quality, reliability, or delivery success?
  • Which skills distinguish someone who grows quickly in this role?

Common preparation mistakes and fixes

Mistake Why it hurts Better approach
Memorizing leaked or crowd-sourced questions Formats change, and memorization does not demonstrate reasoning. Practise transferable problem types and explain your method.
Studying every technology in the company Time is diluted and role-critical gaps remain. Rank the vacancy’s required skills and practise representative tasks.
Claiming ownership of team work Follow-up questions expose unclear contribution and damage trust. Separate your actions from the shared result.
Giving only a final answer The interviewer cannot assess assumptions, trade-offs, or recovery. Explain the plan, edge cases, validation, and limits.
Ignoring nontechnical rounds Many processes include behavioral or cultural-fit evaluation. Prepare factual stories about collaboration, conflict, learning, and prioritization.
Assuming a program page applies everywhere Graduate routes, countries, and experienced-hire roles can differ. Match the source to your cohort, geography, role, and invitation.
Leaving setup until test time Device, browser, network, or timing problems can block an otherwise strong attempt. Complete the required checks early and reserve uninterrupted time.

How to decide what to do next

If the interview is tomorrow, prioritize the invitation, resume walkthrough, one representative technical exercise, and the environment check. If you have a week, add timed practice and behavioral stories. If you have several weeks, deepen the role’s core technology and run multiple mock sessions with feedback. At every stage, replace a low-confidence rumor with a high-confidence fact from the vacancy, invitation, recruiter, or exact employer program page.

A strong preparation cycle ends with evidence you can demonstrate: a solution you can explain, a project you can defend, a failure you can learn from, and a clear understanding of the work you are seeking. That combination is more portable—and more credible—than trying to predict a universal number of rounds or memorize a fixed list of questions.
