If your technology job may be eliminated, prepare in this order: map household cash flow, save personal employment and benefits records without taking company secrets, identify health-insurance and unemployment deadlines, and create a job-search starting point. The checklist below is U.S.-focused. Eligibility, notice periods and benefit dates vary by state, employer and plan, so verify each decision with the official agency or plan administrator.
1. Build a household cash-flow picture before your paycheck stops
Start with the numbers you can verify today rather than a generic emergency-fund rule. Add the recurring essentials your household must pay:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Housing, utilities and internet
- Food and transportation
- Debt minimums
- Insurance and medical costs
- Dependent care, child support or other required payments
Then list liquid savings, other household income, debt balances, documented severance terms and any benefits that may continue after your last day. Include a partner or other household members who contribute to expenses. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s unexpected-job-loss guidance includes cash-flow and expense worksheets for this exercise.
Calculate how long available cash could cover essential spending if wages stop. Make a separate list of adjustable costs such as subscriptions, dining, travel and optional services; deciding what can be paused is easier before a layoff than during a crisis. Keep the calculation current if your income, rent, debt or household members change.

Do not treat unemployment as salary replacement
The CFPB describes unemployment insurance as typically a payment of “a few hundred dollars” per week, but the amount, duration and eligibility are set by state rules and the facts of your separation. Benefits are taxable income. The IRS guidance on losing a job explains that unemployment compensation and severance can create tax obligations, so do not spend every dollar as if it were tax-free.
Build at least two cash-flow views: one that includes expected severance and one that excludes it until the payment is actually deposited. Note the date each bill is due, whether it can be paid by card or transfer, and which expenses are contractually unavoidable. This makes it easier to decide what to pause without accidentally canceling insurance, utilities or a service you still need for a job search.
2. “Gather your documents” into a secure personal folder
Create a folder in a personal account or on personal storage that you are permitted to use. The CFPB’s heading-level advice is “Gather your documents.” Save records that belong to you or that you are entitled to retain, including:
- Recent pay statements and personal compensation records
- Your role description, dates of employment and a factual list of accomplishments, scope, tools and skills you can disclose publicly
- Performance reviews and ratings
- Benefits summaries, health-plan contacts and enrollment information
- Your retirement plan’s Summary Plan Description, recent statements and vesting information
- Personal contact details for colleagues who have agreed to remain in touch
Download or print plan documents while you still have authorized access, and record the personal email or phone number for each benefits contact. Keep copies of equity-plan notices and vesting schedules if those records are yours to receive. Save the date and source of each document so you can tell an official notice from an old summary.
What not to copy
Preparation does not authorize taking source code, customer information, credentials, internal strategy, confidential documents, trade secrets or other employer property. Keep only your own employment history and non-confidential examples you can accurately describe later. If you are unsure whether a file is personal or proprietary, ask human resources or qualified counsel before retaining it. The CFPB and Department of Labor recommend employment and plan records; neither recommendation is permission to remove confidential material (CFPB; DOL retirement and health-benefit guidance).
Keep this folder separate from a portfolio. A portfolio can describe your contribution, the problem you solved and measurable results without reproducing internal files. Do not upload employer material to a personal cloud drive merely because access is about to end.
3. Make a job-search starting point while you still have access
Update a factual work-history document
Record role scope, measurable outcomes, systems and tools, collaboration responsibilities and skills that can be discussed publicly. Do not paste confidential code or customer data into a resume, portfolio or interview exercise. Capture dates and numbers now, while projects and results are easy to remember. Separate public accomplishments from examples that require employer permission.

Avoid overstating ownership of a team or result.
Reconnect with trusted people
Contact former colleagues, mentors and professional peers using personal channels. Ask whether they are comfortable staying in touch and whether they know of relevant openings. The CFPB specifically points to personal networks and colleagues as possible sources of job leads.

Make a simple contact list with the person’s preferred channel, the date you last spoke and any follow-up promised. Do not pressure a current colleague to share confidential hiring information. A short message explaining your role, target work and availability is easier for a contact to forward than a long account of the layoff.
Find the official workforce and unemployment portals
Bookmark the unemployment-insurance site and phone number for the state where you worked, plus state dislocated-worker resources. The Department of Labor’s WARN employer guide notes that dislocated workers may have access to job-search and placement assistance. Use an official state domain rather than a result or message that merely claims to represent the agency.
Recommended Free Tools
Save the address as a bookmark you create yourself, not only as a link in an email. Look for state workforce centers, placement assistance and training information that the state makes available. Rules and services differ by location, so the state agency remains the place to confirm what applies to you.
Prepare for recruiting scams
Unsolicited messages about “fast” jobs, benefit claims or resume services may be attempts to collect identity data or money. The Federal Trade Commission’s job-scam guidance warns about fake employers and requests for payment or personal information. The DOL also warns against sending unemployment documents through unverified websites, email, social-media messages or text links (DOL unemployment identity-fraud guidance). Navigate to the agency site yourself, check the address bar and never install unfamiliar software at a recruiter’s request.
Legitimate hiring processes can still ask for ordinary application information, but a demand for an upfront fee, gift card, wire transfer, login password or urgent installation is a warning sign. Verify a recruiter through the employer’s independently located website and report suspected unemployment identity theft through the official channel.
4. When a layoff is announced, get the separation terms in writing
Ask for one written packet or email that states:
- Your last day worked and formal separation date
- When final wages will be paid
- Severance amount, payment date and conditions
- How unused vacation or other leave will be treated
- Equity-plan deadlines, exercise rules or forfeiture dates
- The date current health coverage ends
- Retirement-plan contact information and any distribution or rollover instructions
- A named contact for each benefit
There is no universal federal severance entitlement. Contracts, collective-bargaining agreements, employer policy and applicable law can control the result, as the DOL termination overview explains. Read any release, waiver or non-disparagement agreement slowly. Note signing and revocation dates, and obtain qualified legal advice if the document affects claims, equity, confidentiality or future work.

Request written instructions for returning equipment and preserving personal files. Do not sign a document simply to obtain a copy. Keep the complete agreement and every later amendment with your tax records.
Check whether WARN notice rules could apply
Federal WARN can require 60 calendar days’ written notice for covered plant closings and mass layoffs. The federal overview generally describes employers with 100 or more employees and qualifying events, but detailed employee-count, hours-worked, site and event thresholds and exceptions matter. Some states have separate notice laws. Use the DOL plant-closing and layoff page to identify the rules, then check the facts of your employer and location. A large announcement alone does not prove that an individual worker is covered.
Notice rules are not the same thing as a guaranteed severance payment. Preserve the notice, the date it was delivered and the location or business unit named. If the announcement covers several sites or a remote workforce, ask the employer which worksite and employee-count facts it used.

5. File for unemployment through the correct state channel
Apply promptly through the official unemployment-insurance contact for the state where you worked. If you worked remotely, crossed state lines or had multiple employers, ask the state agency how to file; do not submit duplicate claims simply because you are uncertain. The CFPB’s unexpected-job-loss page links to state-by-state contacts.
Have your identification, employment dates, employer address, pay records and separation information ready. Continue weekly or biweekly certifications and any required job-search activities. A layoff may generally qualify, but state law and the facts matter; resignation, misconduct, refusal of suitable work or other circumstances can change eligibility. Keep confirmation numbers and copies of every submission.
Read every question literally. Report severance, vacation pay or other payments when the state form asks for them, and keep the written separation explanation consistent with your employer’s notice. If the agency requests clarification, respond by the stated deadline and save proof of delivery. A delayed filing or missed certification can affect payment even when you eventually qualify.
6. Compare health coverage before a deadline expires
Losing job-based coverage can open several routes. Compare the actual premium, deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, doctors and hospitals, prescription formulary, effective date, enrollment deadline and eligibility or subsidy rules. A plan that looks cheaper monthly can cost more when you need care.
| Option | What it can provide | Deadline or cost issue to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Spouse’s or another employer plan | Enrollment in an eligible employment-based group plan | Request special enrollment generally within 30 days after losing eligibility for the former coverage; confirm the plan’s exact rule with its administrator. |
| COBRA continuation | Continuation of the existing group plan and usually its network | For generally covered employers with 20 or more employees in the prior year, the premium can be up to 102% of plan cost. Election is generally due within 60 days of the later of the notice date or coverage loss. General continuation is up to 18 months, with possible extensions in some circumstances. |
| Marketplace plan | Individual coverage with possible income-based savings | Compare network, prescriptions, deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. Marketplace savings use estimated household income for the entire calendar year; update the estimate if income changes. |
| Medicaid or CHIP | Public coverage for eligible adults or children | Eligibility depends on household income and state rules; check the relevant state program after income changes. |
The Department of Labor gives the 30-day special-enrollment and generally 60-day COBRA timelines in its job-loss benefits guidance. Its COBRA overview explains the 102% limit and general continuation period. HealthCare.gov describes Marketplace and public-coverage routes at If You Lose Job-Based Coverage and coverage for unemployed people.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Request the COBRA election notice, full premium, coverage end date and election deadline. Do not wait for a comparison to make a deadline disappear: record each date in a calendar, ask questions in writing and retain proof of submission. Confirm whether a new plan’s effective date leaves a gap and whether doctors or prescriptions remain in network.
How to compare the choices
Start with the people who need coverage and the care they actually use. Check whether a specialist, hospital, therapist and regular prescriptions are in network. Then compare the monthly premium with the deductible and out-of-pocket maximum, not with the premium alone. Confirm whether the plan begins on the date you need it and whether the enrollment request must be made by a particular day. For Marketplace coverage, estimate total household income for the calendar year and revise that estimate if severance, unemployment or a new job changes it. For Medicaid or CHIP, use the state program’s current income and eligibility rules.
COBRA can preserve an existing group plan and network, which may matter during ongoing treatment, but paying up to 102% of the plan cost can make it expensive. A Marketplace plan may have income-based savings but a different network and cost-sharing structure. No option is automatically cheapest for every household.
7. Protect retirement accounts and tax records
Request the latest account statement, vesting status, Summary Plan Description and plan contact. Depending on the plan rules, you may be able to leave money in the former employer plan, roll it into a new employer plan or move it to an IRA. Compare:

- Account and investment fees
- Available investment choices
- Tax treatment and withholding
- Access restrictions and creditor protections
- Minimums, administrative rules and timing
Do not withdraw retirement money merely because a layoff is stressful. The CFPB warns that doing so can damage long-term financial health. The DOL’s benefits guidance explains the possible destinations but plan rules control what is actually available. Ask a qualified tax or financial professional about a rollover before moving funds.
Check vesting separately for employer contributions, matching funds or equity-related benefits. Keep the Summary Plan Description because it explains plan rules that a dashboard may not show. Do not assume a new employer accepts every type of rollover or that an IRA has the same fees, investment choices or protections as the former plan.
Save severance agreements, final pay statements, unemployment records and withholding forms. Severance and unemployment compensation may be taxable, but the correct result depends on your circumstances. Follow the IRS job-loss guidance and adjust withholding or estimated payments as appropriate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Prioritize bills and prevent identity fraud
Rebuild the budget using actual post-layoff income, severance timing and cash reserves. If a payment problem is likely, contact a landlord, lender, utility or insurer early and request any arrangement in writing. Compare the total cost, fees and consequences before agreeing.
Prioritize housing, utilities, food, transportation, insurance, health care and debt minimums before optional spending. A creditor may offer a temporary arrangement, but ask whether interest, fees, reporting or a later lump-sum payment changes. Keep the name of the representative, date, terms and confirmation number.
Check credit reports for unfamiliar accounts and correct errors through the appropriate reporting process. Treat any person who demands an upfront fee, urgent wire transfer, login credentials or a copy of your identity document as untrusted until independently verified. The CFPB warns about job-related messages that request data, fees or unfamiliar software and pressure people to sign quickly; the FTC and DOL identity-fraud pages provide additional warnings.
A practical timeline you can follow
Now, before an announcement
- List essential household expenses, savings, other income, debts and documented severance.
- Create a personal records folder containing permitted pay, performance, benefits and retirement documents.
- Write a non-confidential work-history and accomplishment record.
- Save official state unemployment, workforce and Marketplace links.
- Confirm personal contact details for trusted colleagues and benefits administrators.
- Write down current doctors, prescriptions, plan numbers and regular treatment so a coverage change can be compared quickly.
On announcement day
- Obtain the written separation date, final-pay information, severance terms, equity deadlines and benefit-end date.
- Ask for health-plan and retirement-plan contacts and all notices.
- Calendar the 30-day employer-plan special-enrollment deadline and the generally 60-day COBRA election window, using the dates in your notices.
- Read any release or waiver before signing.
- Confirm which company equipment and accounts must be returned and move only permitted personal contacts or files.
After coverage and wages change
- File unemployment through the state where you worked and complete each certification.
- Compare COBRA, employer coverage, Marketplace, Medicaid and CHIP using total likely costs and networks.
- Review retirement rollover choices and tax withholding before moving money.
- Start outreach and applications using your permitted, non-confidential work history.
- Recheck cash flow weekly and contact creditors early if income is insufficient.
- Keep a dated log of applications, agency calls, benefit notices and decisions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming severance is automatic: check the contract, policy, agreement and applicable law.
- Waiting for a perfect health-plan answer: deadlines continue while you compare; confirm dates with the administrator.
- Taking company files “for your portfolio”: describe the work without copying proprietary material.
- Choosing the lowest premium without checking care: include deductibles, out-of-pocket limits, networks and prescriptions.
- Rolling over retirement money impulsively: compare fees, taxes, protections and plan rules first.
- Using a search ad or message for unemployment: start at the official state agency and protect identity documents.
- Ignoring taxes: unemployment and severance can be taxable; keep records and follow IRS instructions.
- Confusing a notice date with a coverage date: use the dates in the actual plan and COBRA notices.
- Assuming a federal WARN rule settles every case: thresholds, exceptions, state laws and facts determine whether it applies.
A well-prepared layoff response is a sequence, not a single financial target: document what you are owed, protect coverage, file through official channels, preserve retirement options and move into the job search with a clean, non-confidential record of your work.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I lose my job in tech?

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do I file for unemployment after a layoff?
Use the official unemployment-insurance agency for the state where you worked. Apply promptly, follow that state’s certification and job-search rules, keep confirmation numbers and respond to requests by their deadlines. Eligibility and payment depend on state law and the facts of your separation.
Best Value
What happens to my health insurance if I lose my job?
You may be able to join a spouse’s or other employer plan, elect COBRA, buy a Marketplace plan or qualify for Medicaid or CHIP. Compare premiums, deductibles, out-of-pocket limits, networks, prescriptions, effective dates and eligibility rules. Confirm exact deadlines in the notices.
Can I keep my health insurance after a layoff?
COBRA may let eligible workers continue the existing group plan, generally for up to 18 months, but the worker may pay up to 102% of the plan cost. The election period is generally 60 days from the later of the notice date or coverage loss. Check the actual election notice and compare alternatives.
How long do I have to join a spouse’s health plan?
The Department of Labor says special enrollment in another eligible employment-based plan generally must be requested within 30 days after losing eligibility for the former coverage. Ask the plan administrator for the exact procedure and effective date.

Is unemployment enough to replace my paycheck?
Usually not. The CFPB describes unemployment as typically a payment of a few hundred dollars per week, with the amount and duration set by state rules. Treat it as taxable income and build your budget around the amount the state actually approves.
What documents should I save before a tech layoff?
Keep permitted pay statements, compensation records, role and employment dates, performance reviews, benefits summaries, health-plan contacts, the retirement Summary Plan Description, account statements, vesting information and personal contact details for colleagues who agree to stay in touch. Do not copy source code, customer data or confidential employer material.
What happens to my 401(k) after a layoff?
Depending on plan rules, you may be able to leave money in the former plan, roll it to a new employer plan or move it to an IRA. Obtain the Summary Plan Description and compare fees, investment choices, tax treatment, access restrictions and plan-specific rules before acting.
Is severance taxable after a layoff?
Severance and unemployment compensation may be taxable. The result depends on your circumstances, so keep final-pay and withholding records and follow current IRS instructions about withholding or estimated payments.
Does WARN guarantee 60 days of pay?
Federal WARN can require 60 calendar days’ written notice for covered plant closings and mass layoffs, but employer, employee-count, worksite and event thresholds and exceptions apply. Some states have separate laws. WARN notice is not a universal severance entitlement.
How can I avoid layoff-related job scams?
Navigate directly to official unemployment and benefits websites instead of message links. Be skeptical of requests for upfront fees, urgent transfers, login credentials, identity documents or unfamiliar software. Verify recruiters through an employer website you locate independently.
The Bottom Line
Prepare before the announcement if you can: map essential spending, preserve only permitted personal records, save official agency links and update a non-confidential work history. When the layoff arrives, get every date and term in writing, file unemployment through the correct state channel, compare coverage before the 30-day or 60-day windows close, and pause before moving retirement money. State, employer and plan rules control the details, so confirm them with the responsible agency or administrator.
