Before a rainy outdoor football game, check the local forecast and the organizer’s latest updates, then pack for your role. Players should follow competition and surface rules; spectators should bring rain protection. If thunder is heard or lightning is seen, get off the field and into a substantial building or a hard-topped vehicle with its windows closed. A poncho, dugout or small rain shelter is not safe lightning shelter.
Before you leave: check conditions and game updates
Check the latest local forecast for rain, thunderstorms and high-wind alerts, then look for messages from the team, league or venue about kickoff changes and safety instructions. Weather can change after the initial forecast, so decide who will monitor updates and how the group will hear about a change.

Know who makes the safety call
In England grassroots football, England Football says participants should check the forecast and that the home team should plan contingencies and shelter. Match-day thunderstorm decisions belong to the match official, ideally discussed with both teams before kickoff; training decisions belong to the person running the activity. Follow the applicable local competition or organizer plan elsewhere.

Rain alone does not create a universal cancellation threshold. England Football says that when weather is likely to make an event unsafe—for example, through thunder and lightning or extreme winds and rain—the activity should be postponed or cancelled. After a delay, the responsible official should assess whether rain or debris has made the pitch unplayable. England Football’s grassroots thunderstorm guidance explains those responsibilities.
Use safe, permitted equipment
The FA page reproduces the 2026–27 Laws of the Game: dangerous equipment is not allowed, and footwear is compulsory. The laws do not specify one stud pattern as correct for every wet surface. Check your competition’s requirements and the playing surface rather than relying on a universal wet-weather boot recommendation. The FA’s Laws of the Game page covers the equipment rules.

Keep spare clothes or a warm-up layer off the field unless the competition permits them. The cited rules establish equipment requirements, not a weather-specific clothing system.

A packable waterproof poncho can help keep you comfortable in ordinary rain. You may also want a dry layer for the trip home. Treat the poncho as rainwear only: it does not protect against lightning, and a venue’s rain shelter may not be safe during a thunderstorm. Check the venue’s rules before bringing an umbrella or bag. What to do if thunder or lightning arrives
- Leave the playing area. If you hear thunder or see lightning, players, officials and spectators should seek proper shelter rather than waiting under a dugout or rain cover.
- Go to a substantial building or a hard-topped metal vehicle. If using a vehicle, close its windows. A dugout, small rain shelter or shed is not adequate lightning protection.
- Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before resuming outdoor activity. Follow the local safety plan and current local guidance, and do not return earlier because the rain has eased.
- Have the responsible person reassess the pitch. Before play resumes, check for standing water, debris and other conditions that could make the surface unsafe or unplayable.
The US National Weather Service guidance for outdoor sports puts the risk plainly: “There is no place outside that is safe when a thunderstorm is in the area.” It reports about 30 lightning deaths each year in the United States and hundreds of injuries; about two thirds of those deaths are associated with outdoor recreational activities. The page does not state a publication year for those figures.

For mild rain, preparation is mostly about checking updates and using permitted rainwear. Cold rain may make a dry layer useful for spectators or for the trip home, but apparel choices depend on the person and venue; the cited rules do not prescribe fabrics or layering. Thunder, lightning, extreme wind, or an unsafe pitch changes the decision from comfort to safety: leave the exposed area and follow the official or organizer’s instructions.
