How to Prepare Footage and Prompts for Better AI Video Edits in Claude

Claude is most useful in a video-editing workflow when you give it an organized visual sample and a precise editorial job—not when you expect it to open a timeline and render a finished movie. Prepare representative still frames, label every shot, explain the intended audience and result, then ask Claude for a concrete planning deliverable such as a shot order, cut list, continuity report, or list of questions for the editor. Anthropic’s prompting guidance emphasizes that “The more precisely you explain what you want, the better the result.”

The workflow below treats Claude as an analysis and planning assistant. Anthropic’s documentation describes video analysis by breaking a video into frames. The material available for this guide does not establish a Claude-native timeline editor, a universal frame-sampling interval, a clip-duration allowance, or a rendering workflow, so exact cutting and export remain tasks for a dedicated video editor unless a separate, current product specification says otherwise.

What Claude can—and cannot—do in this workflow

Start with the capability boundary because it determines how you prepare your material. Claude can reason about images you provide and use descriptions, labels, and timestamps to help make editorial decisions. Anthropic’s prompting documentation explains video analysis as a process of breaking video into frames. In practice, that means you should supply still images that represent the footage, along with notes that connect each image to its source clip.

That is different from handing Claude a project file and asking it to manipulate a timeline. The sources for this workflow do not establish that Claude itself trims clips, applies transitions in a non-linear editor, synchronizes audio, or renders a finished video file. Ask for an edit plan, not an imaginary export. You or an editing application still perform the actual cuts and encode the deliverable.

Useful jobs to assign Claude

  • Identify the strongest moments for a stated audience and platform.
  • Suggest an order for clips or scenes.
  • Flag continuity, clarity, framing, or visible quality problems.
  • Draft a timestamped or label-based cut list when you provide the relevant timing information.
  • Turn a rough shot inventory into a concise editing brief.
  • List open questions that an editor must answer before cutting.

Jobs that require a qualified assumption

  • Exact timing: Claude cannot know a frame’s timecode unless you supply it or include it in the source notes.
  • Off-screen events: it should not infer what happened outside the supplied frames.
  • Sound decisions: still images do not reveal dialogue, noise, music, or sync problems unless you describe them.
  • Final rendering: no current evidence in this workflow establishes Claude as a video renderer.

Define the finished result before selecting frames

A visual sample is only useful when Claude knows what decision it is supposed to support. Write a short project brief before you extract or upload anything. Include the information that changes editorial priorities:

  • Goal: what the finished video must accomplish, such as explain a product, document an event, teach a process, or create a mood.
  • Audience: who will watch and what they already know.
  • Destination: the platform or context, such as a vertical social post, a web landing page, a presentation, or a long-form channel.
  • Tone: energetic, restrained, intimate, documentary, instructional, humorous, or another specific description.
  • Duration: a target length if one is known. Treat it as a goal, not a promise that Claude can enforce from stills alone.
  • Format: aspect ratio, orientation, captions, brand or legal requirements, and any required opening or closing slate.
  • Must-include and must-avoid items: people, statements, locations, logos, sensitive material, repeated takes, or shots that cannot be used.
  • Decision to make: for example, “choose an opening,” “find a clean demonstration sequence,” or “reduce this interview to three beats.”

Specific constraints prevent a generic list of visually interesting shots. “Pick the best clips” leaves “best” undefined; “choose an opening that establishes the location within the first 10 seconds, avoids visible continuity errors, and feels calm rather than promotional” gives Claude a testable brief.

Build a shot inventory before you upload anything

A short inventory is the bridge between a folder of media and an answer Claude can use. Label clips and frames consistently, and record only observations you can verify. This is an editorial preparation practice rather than a published Anthropic requirement.

Field What to record Example
Clip label A stable identifier used everywhere in the prompt C03 or interview_02
Source timing Start and end time, or a single frame timecode, when known 00:01:14–00:01:22
Subject and action Who or what is visible and what is happening Technician connects the cable
Useful moment The beat that may serve the edit Close-up clearly shows the connector locking
Continuity notes Changes in position, props, wardrobe, lighting, or direction Hand starts left of frame; next take starts right
Quality notes Focus, exposure, obstruction, shake, or composition issues Readable but slightly soft at the edge
Audio notes Dialogue, noise, room tone, or sync information you know Speaker says the key line; air conditioner audible
Restrictions Rights, privacy, or editorial exclusions Do not use frame showing personal address

Use the same label in the filename, inventory, prompt, and requested answer. If a still comes from the middle of a clip, append a frame marker such as C03_f07 and include its timecode if you have one. Do not make Claude guess whether two similarly named images belong to the same take.

Select representative frames, not random screenshots

Anthropic’s guidance supports analyzing video by breaking it into frames, but it does not prescribe a universal sampling interval or a required number of frames. Choose coverage according to the decision you are asking Claude to make.

Coverage for a simple moment selection

When the question is “Which shot best shows the result?”, provide frames from the setup, action, and outcome. Include alternatives if focus, expression, or composition changes. A single attractive still can hide a poor start or finish, so show enough context for the choice.

Coverage for a sequence or continuity review

Include frames at meaningful changes: a person enters or leaves, an object moves, the camera changes direction, the lighting changes, or a transition occurs. Pair a frame from before and after the change. Add notes when motion or sound—not visible in a still—is the reason a cut may work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coverage for interviews or demonstrations

Use frames that identify the speaker or demonstrator, the environment, the key object, and the result. Supply transcript excerpts or audio notes for the spoken argument. A face-only still cannot tell Claude which sentence is most persuasive.

Coverage for a montage

Represent each candidate beat and label its role: establishing, detail, action, reaction, transition, or ending. This lets Claude reason about rhythm and information flow without pretending to measure motion that is not visible in the supplied material.

Prefer clear, usable images. Claude.ai image guidance lists JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP support, a 30 MB upload limit, and a maximum image size of 8,000 by 8,000 pixels. Those are image-upload limits, not video-file limits. The guidance also recommends avoiding small or low-resolution images. Confirm the current interface before relying on an exact limit, because product interfaces and allowances can change.

Organize the material so Claude can map evidence to a decision

There is no single correct packaging method. Choose the smallest set that answers the question while preserving the visual changes that matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Preparation approach Best for Strength Risk to manage
Key-frame set Choosing a hero shot, thumbnail, or opening image Fast to inspect and easy to compare May omit a continuity problem between moments
Beat-by-beat set Planning a short sequence Shows setup, action, and payoff Requires precise labels so order is unambiguous
Before/after continuity set Checking direction, props, wardrobe, or lighting Makes visual changes explicit Still images do not prove motion or audio continuity
Broad catalog Early story assembly across many scenes Exposes more possible routes through the material Can overwhelm the decision unless you define a narrow output

Do not claim that one approach produces a measured improvement over another. The practical comparison is coverage, label clarity, upload practicality, and whether the supplied evidence supports the requested decision.

Write a structured prompt

Separate the project instructions, context, footage notes, task, and answer format. Anthropic describes XML tags as useful for making complex prompts less ambiguous. Tags are organizational markers, not a special video format, and you may use another equally clear structure.

<context>
Project goal: [what the finished video should accomplish]
Audience: [who will watch]
Style and constraints: [tone, aspect ratio, platform, length, required or prohibited content]
</context>

<footage>
Clip/frame labels and short descriptions:
[Label each supplied clip or still; include timestamps where known]
</footage>

<task>
Review the supplied frames and notes. Identify the strongest moments, suggest an edit order, and flag continuity or clarity problems. Do not infer events that are not visible in the supplied material.
</task>

<output_format>
Return a table with: order, clip/frame label, purpose, suggested action, and open question.
</output_format>

This scaffold is a practical adaptation of general prompting advice, not an official Anthropic template. Replace every bracketed instruction with project-specific information before sending it.

Make the task testable

Use verbs that describe an observable operation: rank, group, select, flag, sequence, extract, or ask. Add a decision rule where possible. For example:

  • “Select up to three opening options. Prefer a shot that establishes place and subject without a visible continuity conflict.”
  • “Group the frames into setup, demonstration, result, and reaction. If a group is unsupported, mark it ‘not established.’”
  • “Flag any frame that contains a privacy concern. Quote the label and describe only what is visible.”

Tell Claude what not to do when hallucination would damage the edit: do not invent dialogue, do not infer an unseen event, do not assume two labels are the same take, and do not assign exact timing where no timecode is supplied.

Specify the answer shape

An answer format makes the result easier to transfer into an editing application. A table might include order, clip/frame label, purpose, suggested action, confidence or evidence, and open question. Ask for a short rationale tied to visible evidence rather than a paragraph of uncheckable enthusiasm.

Ask for the right editorial deliverable

Shot-order proposal

Ask Claude to return a numbered sequence and explain the narrative job of each shot. Require it to preserve your labels. If a proposed transition depends on motion or audio, ask it to mark that dependency for manual verification.

Continuity report

Provide paired frames and request a list of changes in screen direction, hand position, object placement, wardrobe, lighting, or background. Ask Claude to distinguish “visible mismatch” from “cannot determine from stills.”

Cut-list draft

Supply start and end timecodes or another timing system. Ask for a table that names the source, in-point, out-point, purpose, and any audio or caption note. Without supplied timing, request label-based recommendations instead; Claude cannot manufacture reliable timestamps from an unlabeled image.

Clarity and accessibility review

Ask whether the visual sequence makes the intended action understandable, then provide caption or transcript notes for the spoken content. Request concrete fixes such as a wider establishing frame, an insert of the control being used, or a longer hold for a required detail. Treat these as suggestions to verify in the actual moving footage.

Iterate in focused passes

A single giant prompt encourages a broad, hard-to-check answer. Use a sequence of narrow passes, keeping the project brief stable.

  1. Pass one—catalog: Ask Claude to restate each supplied label, visible subject, action, and uncertainty. Correct misread labels before asking for creative decisions.
  2. Pass two—coverage: Ask which story beats lack a usable frame and which supplied frames are redundant.
  3. Pass three—selection: Ask for the strongest candidates under one criterion, such as clarity, emotional reaction, or product detail.
  4. Pass four—ordering: Ask for an edit order that serves the stated audience and duration target.
  5. Pass five—risk check: Ask specifically about continuity, privacy, factual clarity, and unsupported assumptions.
  6. Pass six—handoff: Request a compact cut list or editor’s checklist using the same labels and timing notes.

If the response is too broad, narrow the scope to one sequence or one editorial decision. If it is too confident, add an evidence rule: “For every recommendation, cite the supplied label; if the material is insufficient, say so.” Examples of a desired row or paragraph can also clarify tone and level of detail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Claude Projects for recurring productions

For repeated projects, Claude Projects can hold uploaded knowledge and project instructions, subject to plan availability. A project can preserve a glossary, audience definition, house style, recurring safety rules, and naming convention so each new footage review starts from the same baseline. Keep changing material—such as the current shot inventory and episode-specific constraints—in the conversation or project knowledge where it can be updated.

Separate durable guidance from temporary footage notes. A permanent instruction might say “Use clip labels exactly as supplied and mark unsupported inferences.” A temporary instruction might say “For this launch video, prioritize the demonstration over behind-the-scenes material.” Review project instructions when the format, audience, or platform changes.

Troubleshoot common weak results

Symptom Likely cause Correction
Generic praise instead of an edit plan The task and output format are vague Ask for a labeled table, a ranking criterion, and an explicit decision
Claude invents what happened between frames The prompt does not limit inference Require visible-evidence-only observations and an “insufficient evidence” label
Suggested timestamps are unreliable No timecodes were supplied Add source timing to the inventory or request label-based guidance
Continuity problems are missed Only isolated hero frames were uploaded Provide before-and-after frames around each meaningful change
Important dialogue is ignored Still images contain no audio information Add a transcript excerpt, speaker label, and audio-quality note
Uploads fail or look unreadable Unsupported format, oversized image, or low resolution Use JPEG, PNG, GIF, or WebP; stay within the current image guidance and choose a legible resolution
The answer becomes inconsistent across episodes Each prompt uses different labels and rules Standardize the inventory and store stable instructions in a Project where available

Final preflight checklist

  • The audience, platform, tone, and intended viewer takeaway are stated.
  • The requested duration is identified as a target, with no claim that still-frame analysis enforces it.
  • Every uploaded frame has a unique label and a description tied to its source clip.
  • Important actions, transitions, and continuity changes are represented.
  • Known timecodes, transcript excerpts, and audio issues are included where relevant.
  • Image files use a supported format and are readable at the current upload limits.
  • The task asks for one concrete deliverable rather than an undefined “edit.”
  • The output format is specified, preferably a table that can be handed to an editor.
  • The prompt tells Claude not to infer unseen events or fabricate timing.
  • A follow-up pass is reserved for continuity, privacy, accessibility, and unsupported assumptions.

With this preparation, Claude has the evidence and editorial rules needed to produce a checkable plan. The final cut still depends on reviewing the moving footage, listening to its audio, and making the actual timeline and export decisions in the appropriate editing tools.
