A documented laboratory route uses mature Coccinia indica stems, three-week water retting, mechanical combing, optional chemical surface treatment, controlled fiber cutting, and compression molding with an epoxy system matched to the supplier’s instructions. The strongest configuration reported in the cited 2019 tests used 30 mm fibers at 35 wt%, but that result applies only to the materials and test conditions studied.
What the preparation is intended to achieve
Coccinia indica reinforcement reported in the available studies comes from the plant’s stems rather than its leaves or fruit. The stem contains a fibrous inner portion surrounded by an outer layer that must be removed after retting. Preparation has two jobs: separate usable fibers from the stem and produce a clean, dry, sufficiently rough surface that the epoxy can wet and bond to.

Fiber performance is not determined by plant species alone. Stem maturity, growing conditions, retting time, fiber diameter, residual moisture, surface chemistry, fiber length, mass fraction, resin identity, molding pressure, cure cycle and test method can all change the result. The procedures below therefore describe documented laboratory routes, not an industrial standard or a guaranteed optimum.

Basic materials
- Mature Coccinia indica stems.
- Clean water for retting and rinsing, plus distilled water for the final rinse after alkali treatment.
- Sodium hydroxide for the documented 5% alkali treatment option.
- A compatible epoxy resin and its specified hardener.
- Optional treatment chemicals or additives used in separate studies, such as potassium permanganate, silane or nanoclay.
Useful equipment
- A container large enough to keep the stems submerged for three weeks.
- A knife or scraper for removing the softened outer layer.
- A fine metal-tooth comb for separating bundles into fibers.
- Cutting tools or a sizing jig for producing repeatable lengths.
- Separate, chemically compatible containers for alkali treatment and rinsing.
- A balance for measuring dry fiber and resin components.
- A mold and compression-molding equipment, or another process whose pressure, temperature and cure conditions can be documented.
Sodium hydroxide is corrosive, and potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizer. Use appropriate eye, skin and respiratory protection, chemical-resistant containers and local laboratory waste procedures. Keep treatment chemicals away from incompatible materials, label every bath, and do not reuse a bath without recording its concentration and condition.

Step 1: Extract fiber from the stems
Select and prepare the stems
Use mature stems and record their source, harvest date if known, approximate diameter and storage history. The published extraction work collected plant material in Tamil Nadu, India; that location is part of the study description, not a requirement that all future material come from the same region. Remove dirt and visible contamination before retting, but avoid damaging the stem surface before the softening step.
Water-retting procedure
- Place the stems in water and keep them submerged for three weeks. The reported purpose is microbial degradation and softening of the non-fibrous material.
- Keep the duration, water-to-stem ratio, temperature and whether the water is changed in your laboratory record. These details can affect how easily the outer layer separates, even though the cited procedure specifies the three-week period.
- At the end of retting, remove the stems and inspect them. Proceed only when the outer tissue has softened enough to separate mechanically; do not assume that a different crop or climate will soften at exactly the same rate.
Remove the outer layer and comb the inner portion
- Strip away the softened outer layer with a knife or scraper while preserving the inner portion.
- Retain the inner material identified as the fiber-bearing portion in the published method.
- Pass that material through a fine metal-tooth comb repeatedly to split bundles and release individual or smaller bundles of fibers.
- Separate visibly woody pieces, unretted fragments and heavily damaged fibers. Keep these rejection criteria consistent between batches.
The study describes mechanical combing after retting; it does not establish that this is the only viable extraction route. If you change the retting chemistry, mechanical equipment or drying method, treat the resulting fiber as a new material and report the change rather than calling it the same protocol.
Step 2: Apply a documented surface treatment
5% sodium hydroxide option
One published method immerses the combed fibers in 5% sodium hydroxide at room temperature for one hour. The concentration basis and solution-to-fiber ratio must be defined in your laboratory record; do not silently substitute a different basis or bath strength.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Prepare the 5% sodium hydroxide bath using the concentration convention required by your laboratory and record the calculation.
- Immerse the separated fibers for one hour at room temperature. Keep the start and end times, temperature and fiber-to-liquid ratio consistent across specimens.
- Remove the fibers and rinse thoroughly with water.
- Continue rinsing with distilled water to remove residual alkali. Residual sodium hydroxide can alter the fiber surface and interfere with epoxy curing or adhesion.
- Dry the rinsed fibers in direct sunlight for two to three weeks, as reported in the study. Record the actual drying duration and weather conditions, and protect the fibers from re-wetting.
This treatment is a documented option, not a blanket recommendation for every Coccinia indica batch or epoxy system. Excessive alkali exposure can damage natural fibers, while inadequate rinsing can leave alkaline residue. If you shorten the treatment, change the concentration or use oven drying, the result is no longer a direct replication of the published route.
Other treatments are separate experiments
A Scientific Reports article published on 2026-10-11 compares several chemical conditions and reports its best overall mechanical and water-absorption performance with 0.5% potassium permanganate (KMnO4). The excerpted evidence does not provide a complete immersion time, rinse sequence or cure schedule for reproducing that condition, so do not invent those parameters from the headline result.

Other papers address different objectives. A 2019 study reports 3 wt% Cloisite 30B nanoclay as its best-tested formulation for mechanical properties. A 2020 wear study compares untreated fibers, 5 wt% sodium-hydroxide-treated fibers and 3 wt% silane-treated fibers in hand-laid, open-mold composites. It used 30 mm fibers and 35 wt% fiber content and reports lower weight loss and friction for treated specimens, with favorable wear resistance for the silane-treated condition. Those results concern tribology, not a universal ranking of tensile or flexural performance.
Step 3: Dry, inspect and cut the fibers
Confirm dryness before weighing
Fiber loading is normally calculated from dry mass. After the documented sun-drying period, inspect the fibers for visible moisture, clumping, mold growth, darkened areas or brittle damage. Weigh a representative portion only after the batch has reached a stable, documented condition. If you use a different drying process, report it because moisture changes both the apparent fiber mass and the quality of epoxy wetting.
Choose a controlled length
The cited 2019 work tested fiber lengths from 10 to 40 mm and fiber loadings from 25 to 40 wt%. Among those combinations, 30 mm fibers at 35 wt% gave the best mechanical properties. The result should be interpreted as the best point inside that study’s tested window, not as a universal optimum for every resin or mold.
Cut fibers with a guide or jig so that the length distribution is narrow. Record whether the stated length is the nominal cut length or an average measured length. Avoid excessive handling that frays the ends, because damaged ends can create stress concentrations and make specimens difficult to compare.
Step 4: Calculate the formulation and select the epoxy system
Fiber mass fraction
For a target fiber loading, calculate the dry-fiber mass against the total mass of fiber plus the complete resin system:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For example, a 35 wt% batch with a 1,000 g total target contains 350 g of dry fiber and 650 g of combined epoxy resin and hardener. This arithmetic does not determine the resin-to-hardener split; that split comes from the selected product’s technical instructions.
Do not copy a resin ratio blindly
One 2019 characterization paper mixed its particular epoxy and hardener at 10:1. That number belongs to that resin system and must not be treated as a general epoxy rule. Different products use different ratios, and some specify the ratio by mass while others specify it by volume.
- Identify the exact resin and hardener system you are using.
- Follow its stated mix ratio, units, pot life, allowable temperature range and cure schedule.
- Measure components with a calibrated balance when the supplier specifies mass mixing.
- Mix slowly and thoroughly, scraping the container walls and bottom without whipping unnecessary air into the blend.
- Record batch size, mixing time and the time between mixing and molding.
The reviewed studies do not establish a universal cure schedule. A resin supplier’s cure instructions therefore take precedence over any schedule inferred from another paper.
Step 5: Wet, mold and cure the composite
Compression molding route
Compression molding is documented for Coccinia indica epoxy composites. Before charging the mold, clean it, apply a suitable release system and decide how the fibers will be distributed. Random placement may be appropriate for an isotropic screening study; aligned placement is a different material and must be reported as such.

- Pre-weigh the dry fibers for the selected loading.
- Prepare the resin and hardener at the product-specific ratio.
- Wet the fibers progressively, working the resin through bundles and corners. Look for dry, pale regions that indicate incomplete impregnation.
- Place the wet charge in the mold with the intended orientation and thickness.
- Apply the documented compression pressure and molding conditions. Record pressure, temperature, mold dimensions and hold time.
- Cure according to the selected epoxy system’s instructions, then condition specimens consistently before testing.
Why wetting and process records matter
Two batches with the same nominal 30 mm length and 35 wt% loading can produce different strengths if one contains voids, poorly wetted bundles or a different cure state. Replication requires control of the particular resin, hardener, mold, pressure, temperature, fiber distribution and test procedure—not just the plant treatment.
What the published results actually show
| Study or condition | Fiber and formulation details | Reported result or purpose | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bhuvaneshwaran, Sampath and Sagadevan, Polimery (2019) | Lengths tested from 10–40 mm; loadings 25–40 wt% | 30 mm and 35 wt% gave the best mechanical properties among the tested combinations | Best-tested point in that experimental window, not a universal optimum |
| Bhuvaneshwaran et al., Polimery (2019) | 30 mm fibers, 35% loading | Tensile 25.5 N/mm²; flexural 66.5 MPa; impact 383 J/m; compressive 34.5 MPa | Values belong to the paper’s specimens and methods |
| Mylsamy et al., Scientific Reports (published 2026-10-11), 0.5% KMnO4 condition | Chemically treated specimens; full process details must be taken from the paper | Tensile 40.13 MPa; flexural 89.74 MPa; compressive 50 MPa; impact 650 J/m | Highest reported comparison condition in that paper; early-access results may be replaced by a final version |
| Mylsamy et al., untreated comparator | Untreated specimens in the same paper’s comparison | Tensile 34.59 MPa; flexural 66.63 MPa; compressive 34.4 MPa; impact 386.7 J/m | Comparator values under that paper’s test conditions |
| 2019 nanoclay study | 3 wt% Cloisite 30B nanoclay among tested formulations | Best-tested mechanical properties in that study | Different intervention and formulation; not directly interchangeable with alkali or permanganate treatment |
| 2020 wear study | Untreated, 5 wt% NaOH and 3 wt% silane; hand-laid open mold; 30 mm, 35 wt% | Treated specimens showed lower weight loss and friction; silane-treated condition had favorable wear resistance | Tribology result, not a general tensile-property ranking |
The numerical differences across papers cannot be used to declare one treatment “best” without matching the property, fiber geometry, loading, resin, fabrication method and test standard. Tensile, flexural, compressive, impact, water absorption and wear answer different engineering questions.
Quality-control checks before testing
Fiber batch checks
- Record stem source, retting duration and visible condition after retting.
- Separate outer-layer fragments and woody material consistently.
- Measure a sample of cut lengths rather than relying only on the cutting setting.
- Record dry mass and the drying method and duration.
- Keep treated and untreated batches in separate, labeled containers.
Composite checks
- Verify the actual resin-to-hardener ratio and whether it was measured by mass or volume.
- Inspect for dry fiber bundles, resin-rich pockets, voids, cracks and uneven thickness.
- Record mold pressure, temperature, hold time, cure time and post-cure or conditioning history.
- Use consistent specimen dimensions and test orientation.
- Report the number of specimens and the spread of results, not only the highest individual value.
Troubleshooting common failures
Fibers remain covered with stem tissue
Insufficient softening, uneven submersion or an unusually mature stem can leave the outer layer attached. Extend investigation through better immersion and controlled retting records rather than scraping aggressively, which can cut the useful fibers. A changed retting duration should be reported as a process modification.
Epoxy does not wet the fiber bundles
Likely contributors include residual moisture, residual alkali, dense bundles, excessive fiber loading or resin that has begun to gel. Recheck the rinse and drying record, loosen bundles during combing, work in smaller batches and stay within the resin’s pot life. Do not compensate by changing the hardener ratio.

Entrapped air can come from fast mixing, inadequate consolidation or an overly large charge. Mix more deliberately, impregnate in stages and document the compression conditions. If the mold cannot consolidate the chosen loading, reduce batch size or redesign the charge rather than assuming the nominal formulation is being tested.

Strength varies widely between specimens
Check fiber-length distribution, orientation, local fiber-rich zones, thickness, cure state and moisture history. Natural fibers vary from stem to stem, so representative sampling and clear rejection rules are essential. Comparing a single high result with another paper’s average or typical value is not valid.
Alkali-treated fibers appear brittle or darkened
Possible causes include overexposure, an incorrectly prepared bath, incomplete rinsing or prolonged wet storage after treatment. Verify the concentration basis and one-hour room-temperature exposure, rinse thoroughly, dry promptly and compare a small controlled batch before scaling up.
How to report a reproducible preparation

This level of detail is particularly important when comparing the 2019 alkali route, the 2019 nanoclay result, the 2020 silane wear work and the 2026 permanganate comparison. They optimize different variables and should be compared only on a matched performance axis.
Practical decision framework
If your priority is a straightforward mechanical-property baseline
Start with the documented stem extraction, then use the 5% sodium hydroxide treatment exactly as reported, cut fibers to 30 mm and evaluate 35 wt% alongside at least one lower and one higher loading. Keep the epoxy system and molding conditions fixed so that any change can be attributed to the fiber variable.
If your priority is moisture or broad mechanical comparison
The 0.5% KMnO4 condition is the most favorable treatment in the 2026 comparison, with the reported values shown above. Reproduce the paper’s full method before drawing conclusions, because the available abstract-level figures do not supply every processing parameter.
If your priority is sliding wear
Use the 2020 study’s wear-oriented design as the relevant reference: hand-laid open molding, 30 mm fibers and 35 wt% loading, with untreated, alkali-treated and silane-treated conditions compared under the same tribological test. Do not substitute tensile strength as a proxy for wear resistance.

Bottom line
For a defensible laboratory starting point, extract fibers from mature stems by three-week water retting and combing, then document the 5% NaOH, one-hour, room-temperature treatment with thorough water and distilled-water rinsing and two to three weeks of direct-sun drying. Cut the dry fibers to a controlled length and test 30 mm at 35 wt% because that was the best-tested mechanical combination in the cited 2019 work. Use only the epoxy manufacturer’s specified resin-to-hardener ratio; the published 10:1 example is not universal. Treat the permanganate, nanoclay and silane findings as separate, property-specific experiments rather than interchangeable recipes.
