To prepare a Pokémon for a Max Battle, first make sure it is Dynamax or Gigantamax, then unlock and level its Max Moves with Candy and Max Particles. Collect enough particles for both entry and training, check the current Power Spot Boss, choose a role your group needs, and arrive with a party and plan suited to that boss. Ordinary combat power does not make a regular Pokémon eligible: only Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon can enter Max Battles.
Start with the entry requirement
A Max Battle has a hard eligibility gate. Your battle party must contain at least one Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon. A non-Max Pokémon, even one with excellent statistics or a high Combat Power, cannot be selected for the Max Battle itself. Treat obtaining a Max-form Pokémon as step one; matchup and move training come after that.

Dynamax and Gigantamax are related but not identical. A Dynamax Pokémon uses a Max attack based on the type of its Fast Attack and can learn the support moves Max Spirit and Max Guard. A Gigantamax Pokémon has a species-specific G-Max move and can also learn the support moves. The form determines what you can bring, while the current Power Spot Boss determines which investment is most useful.

Catch one from a Max Battle encounter
Max Battles can award encounters with Pokémon that have the required Dynamax or Gigantamax form. Once caught, that Pokémon can be selected for later Max Battles and trained through its Max Move menu.

Use the introductory To the Max! Special Research
The introductory To the Max! Special Research provides a path to initial Dynamax encounters. If you have not yet completed that research, check the Special Research tab and finish its available tasks before spending resources on a regular Pokémon that cannot enter a Max Battle.
Confirm the form before investing
Open the Pokémon’s detail page and verify that the Max-related move and training controls are present. Keep a clear separation between a Pokémon’s ordinary moves and its Max Moves. Powering up a normal moveset does not satisfy the Max Battle entry requirement and does not automatically unlock Max options.
Train Max Moves with Candy and Max Particles
Select the eligible Pokémon and open its Max Move controls. Candy and Max Particles are used to unlock moves and to raise their levels. A trained Max Move has a stronger effect than an untrained version, but the sources do not establish one universal upgrade order or a single best level for every boss. Spend resources around the encounter and the role your party lacks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Max option | What it does | When it is useful | Planning question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max attack | Deals damage; for a Dynamax Pokémon, its type follows the Pokémon’s Fast Attack type. | When the group needs direct damage or the attack type matches the current boss well. | Does this Pokémon have a useful Fast Attack type for the boss you expect to face? |
| Max Spirit | Heals the user and allies. | When teammates are taking sustained damage or the group needs recovery to keep its damage dealers active. | Will healing keep the party in the fight longer than another damage-focused investment? |
| Max Guard | Reduces damage from the opposing Power Spot Boss. | When incoming damage is the main reason the party is failing or when a sturdier role is needed. | Can damage reduction protect enough teammates to justify the particles and Candy? |
| G-Max move | A species-specific Gigantamax attack. | When you are preparing a Gigantamax species and want to use its distinctive Max attack. | Does the species-specific attack fit the boss and the rest of the group’s coverage? |
Gigantamax Pokémon retain access to the support moves, so a Gigantamax party does not have to be made entirely of attackers. Conversely, a Dynamax Pokémon’s Max attack is not a free choice of type: check its Fast Attack before committing resources. The move menu in the live game is the authority for which options are unlocked and what each upgrade costs.
Do not spend particles needed for entry
Particles have two competing uses: entering a Max Battle and training Max Moves. Before upgrading a move, reserve enough for the battle you intend to attend. The current official guide confirms that storage and daily collection are limited, but it does not publish stable general numeric caps. Read the particle counter and the entry screen in the current game rather than relying on an old number.
Collect Max Particles efficiently
Use nearby Power Spots
Power Spots emit Max Particles and host Max Battles. Interact with the spots you can reach safely, and note both the particle pickup and the battle that is scheduled there. The map is live: locations and available bosses can change, so scout the intended spot close to the time you plan to play.
Collect while exploring
Exploration also provides Max Particles. The official guidance describes collection through exploration, with Adventure Sync and the Nearby menu helping you surface opportunities. Check your particle total after a walk instead of assuming that every route grants the same amount.

Watch both caps
The game can limit how many particles you collect in a day and how many you can hold. When either limit is reached, additional activity may not produce the result you expect. Check the live counter before a trip, after visiting a Power Spot, and before trying to enter a battle.
Separate current rules from event bonuses
During the 2024 Pokémon GO Wild Area: Global event, the published daily collection limit was 1,600 Max Particles. That was an event-specific allowance, not a permanent general limit. Do not use it to plan a 2026 daily route unless the current event announcement explicitly restores the same bonus.
Choose what to invest in
There is no official universal ranking that makes one Max Pokémon the best in every encounter. Compare candidates against the actual boss and your group’s needs using the following framework.
| Decision factor | What to check | How it changes your preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Boss matchup | The current Power Spot Boss, its attacks, and the attack type available from your Pokémon’s Fast Attack. | Favor a Max attack that gives useful damage while avoiding a poor matchup; consider defensive support if the boss hits hard. |
| Party role | Whether teammates are bringing damage, healing, or mitigation. | Train Max Spirit or Max Guard when the party already has sufficient damage and lacks durability; train the attack when damage is the bottleneck. |
| Resource cost | The Candy and Max Particle cost displayed for each unlock or level, plus particles reserved for entry. | Prioritize one practical move rather than unlocking everything immediately, especially before a costly encounter. |
| Availability | Whether you already own the required form and can reach a Power Spot with a viable group. | Do not build around a Pokémon you cannot bring to the scheduled battle or a group size you cannot assemble. |
| Encounter scale | Whether the target is a standard Dynamax battle or a difficult Gigantamax battle. | Use a more conservative investment and stronger coordination plan for Gigantamax encounters. |
This framework is a planning tool, not an official tier list. A move that is excellent for one boss can be unnecessary for another, and a support Pokémon can be more valuable when several teammates are already carrying strong attackers.
Scout the Power Spot and organize the group
Dynamax battle groups
The official Pokémon GO guide allows up to four Trainers to team up for a Dynamax Max Battle. Confirm who is attending, whether each person has at least one eligible Pokémon, and which roles are covered. A four-person limit means that one player cannot assume a large crowd will compensate for an underprepared party.
Gigantamax battle groups
Gigantamax encounters can include up to 40 Trainers, arranged in groups of four or fewer. The headline capacity is not a guarantee that any Gigantamax boss will fall with a particular number of people. Difficulty depends on the boss and on the strength, move training, and coordination of the participating groups.
The Pokémon Company’s strategy guidance warns that Gigantamax battles are difficult even with other Trainers and recommends powering up Dynamax Pokémon and leveling Max Moves before the event. Use that as a preparation standard, not as a promise that a specific player count will always win.

Check the site shortly before departure
Power Spot locations can change. Verify the spot on the map, the boss shown there, the start time, and whether you have enough particles for entry. If the spot no longer offers the expected encounter, reassess your route instead of arriving with a build designed for a different boss.

Use this preparation sequence
- Identify the boss. Open the Power Spot or the nearby listing and read the current boss information. Record the battle type, start time, and whether it is Dynamax or Gigantamax.
- Verify your form. In your Pokémon storage, choose a Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon and confirm that it can be added to a Max Battle party. A normal version of the same species is not a substitute.
- Check the Fast Attack. For a Dynamax Pokémon, the Max attack’s type follows this Fast Attack. Decide whether that type gives the party useful coverage for the boss.
- Inspect the Max Move menu. Note which attack, Max Spirit, Max Guard, or G-Max move is available, what remains locked, and the Candy and Max Particle cost shown by the game.
- Reserve entry particles. Keep the amount required by the battle entry screen available before you train another move. Because limits and costs can change, use the current screen rather than an online historic figure.
- Train for the group’s gap. Level the damage move when the party needs damage, Max Spirit when recovery is the problem, or Max Guard when boss damage is causing knockouts. For Gigantamax, consider whether the species-specific G-Max move complements the support coverage.
- Confirm the party. Add at least one eligible Pokémon and, where the game permits, prepare additional Max Pokémon so a faint does not end your contribution. Make sure teammates know who is covering damage, healing, and mitigation.
- Arrive with time to spare. Recheck the Power Spot, boss, particle total, and group before the battle starts. This catches a changed location or an unexpectedly different encounter.
Play the regular phase deliberately
Tap to attack and build the meter
During the regular phase, tap to use Fast Attacks. These attacks build the meter needed for the Max phase. Keep attacking instead of waiting for the transformation; the meter is the resource that unlocks your strongest three-turn window.
Dodge the targeting prompt
When the target prompt appears over your Pokémon, dodge. Dodging is especially important when the boss is focusing your Pokémon or when preserving a support role will keep allies alive. Do not abandon all attacking for movement; return to tapping once the immediate threat has passed so the meter continues to fill.
Swipe through energy icons
Energy icons can appear in the arena. Swipe toward them to collect them and fill the meter faster. Watching for these icons gives you another way to reach the Max phase without changing your party or spending additional particles.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Spend the three-turn Max phase wisely
When the meter is full, your Pokémon Dynamaxes or Gigantamaxes for three turns. This is a short, valuable window, so decide the role before the first Max turn rather than switching randomly after it begins.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Use the Max attack when immediate damage is the priority and the attack type is appropriate for the boss.
- Use Max Spirit when healing the user and allies can keep the party active through the next exchange.
- Use Max Guard when reducing Power Spot Boss damage protects the group from knockouts or preserves another player’s damage window.
- Use the G-Max move when a Gigantamax Pokémon’s species-specific attack is the best fit for the current role and matchup.
Do not assume every player should press the same option. A coordinated mix of damage, healing, and mitigation can be more useful than four identical attacks, particularly when the boss is overwhelming the party.
If your Pokémon faints
If a Pokémon faints, the official guidance says you can continue tapping and then cheer for teammates. Cheering fills teammates’ Max meters faster, so a fainted player can still contribute to the group’s next transformation. Keep tapping when the game allows it, then use the cheer action rather than treating a faint as an immediate exit from the battle.

Common preparation problems and fixes
The game will not let me enter
Check that the battle party contains a Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon. A high-level ordinary Pokémon does not pass the eligibility gate. Return to storage, select a Max-form Pokémon, and add it before trying the entry screen again.
I have a Max Pokémon but a move is unavailable
Open that Pokémon’s Max Move controls and read the unlock requirement. Max Moves require Candy and Max Particles, and a move is not automatically at its strongest level. Collect the missing resources, then unlock or level the specific move needed for the boss rather than assuming all options are ready.
I ran out of particles before the battle
Particles may have been spent on training or blocked by a daily collection or storage limit. Check the live counter, visit accessible Power Spots, and use exploration collection where available. If the entry screen still requires more than you hold, do not spend the remaining particles on another upgrade; plan the next battle after replenishing them.
The Power Spot is not where I expected
Power Spot locations can change. Use the current map and Nearby menu, confirm the boss at the location, and adjust your route. Historic event maps or an earlier visit are not reliable evidence of the current spot.
Our Gigantamax group is losing quickly
Do not infer that the maximum 40-Trainer capacity guarantees success. Check whether the boss is Gigantamax, whether groups are full enough, and whether participants have trained Max Moves. Add Max Spirit or Max Guard coverage when everyone is attacking but the party is repeatedly knocked out, and increase damage training when the group survives but cannot finish in time.
We planned around an old particle bonus
The 1,600-particle daily figure belonged to the 2024 GO Wild Area: Global event. Treat it as historical context only. Current caps, costs, bosses, and event bonuses must be read from the live game or the current official announcement.
A compact checklist for battle day
- At least one Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon is in the battle party.
- The current Power Spot Boss and battle type have been checked.
- The Pokémon’s Fast Attack and resulting Dynamax Max attack type are understood.
- The chosen Max attack, Max Spirit, Max Guard, or G-Max move is unlocked and trained as far as the available Candy and particles justify.
- Enough Max Particles remain for battle entry after training.
- The group size fits the encounter: no more than four Trainers for a Dynamax battle, or coordinated groups of four or fewer within the 40-Trainer Gigantamax capacity.
- Each participant knows whether the party needs damage, healing, or damage reduction.
- The spot, boss, start time, and particle counter have been rechecked shortly before the battle.
The practical rule is simple: obtain the required Max form first, then spend Candy and particles on the move and role that answer the current boss’s problem. Keep entry resources available, use the meter and three-turn Max window deliberately, and treat group capacity as an upper limit rather than a guaranteed win condition.
