Prepare a Ferrari 296 by verifying the exact car and circuit rules, completing a documented mechanical inspection, confirming the installed tires and wheels, and learning the venue before chasing speed. Ferrari’s published tire dimensions and system descriptions identify the 296 GTB, but they do not supply a universal track-day checklist, tire pressures, wheel torque, brake limits, or fluid procedure. Use the owner documentation for your VIN and market, Ferrari authorized service when the documentation is unclear, and the organizer’s rules for the event.
Start with the exact car and the exact event
“Ferrari 296” is not enough information to select settings. First establish whether the car is a 296 GTB or 296 GTS, its model year, market, wheel design, tire specification and current service status. The published tire information covered here is for the 296 GTB; it must not be silently applied to a GTS, another wheel package or every model year.

Record the car’s configuration
- Write down the VIN, model year, GTB or GTS body style and the market in which the car is registered.
- Photograph each tire sidewall and record the brand, model, construction marking, size, speed rating and date code.
- Record the wheel size and whether the wheels are factory equipment or an approved replacement configuration.
- Check the service history and identify any upcoming scheduled maintenance, warning message or unresolved fault.
Keep this record with the event paperwork. If the owner documentation does not answer a track-use question, ask an authorized Ferrari service provider rather than borrowing a number from another car. Ferrari’s public TechInfo service describes paid access to factory-authorized technical and parts information, but the relevant procedure still has to match your car and market.

Obtain the current supplementary regulations, driver briefing and technical requirements. Confirm that the event accepts road-registered supercars, your tire type, your noise level and your insurance arrangement. Check the passing rules, flag system, pit-lane procedure, mandatory equipment, passenger policy, timing-device policy and weather cancellation rules. A car that is mechanically ready can still be refused if it does not meet the organizer’s requirements.

Ask specifically whether the organizer requires a helmet standard, tow equipment, numbers, a fire extinguisher, an electrical cut-off, spare clothing or a particular level of tread. Do not assume that equipment required by a racing series is required for a normal track day, or that road-car equipment satisfies a circuit’s rules.
Inspect the car before the event
A track session adds repeated heavy braking, cornering loads and heat cycles. Arrange inspection early enough to repair a problem and recheck the car before departure. Ferrari’s public material describes sophisticated electronic dynamics and brake-by-wire systems, but those descriptions are not inspection limits or permission to skip a workshop check.
Use a Ferrari-specific inspection source
- Open the owner manual and any current service documentation that applies to the VIN, model year, market and GTB or GTS configuration.
- Look for the manufacturer’s instructions concerning circuit use, fluid condition, tire condition, wheel installation, warning messages and post-use checks.
- Ask authorized Ferrari service to interpret anything that is missing, ambiguous or inconsistent with the car’s equipment.
- Request that the technician document findings and identify work that must be completed before driving at speed.
No authoritative Ferrari-specific value for wheel-fastening torque, cold or hot tire pressure, minimum pad thickness, rotor limit, brake-fluid grade, fluid interval, warm-up or cool-down procedure was established here. Leave those values blank until they are verified for the applicable car. Generic internet settings, figures from a different make and instructions for 296 Challenge or GT3 race cars are not substitutes.

- Check for warning lights, stored faults, unusual noises, leaks and any issue that has appeared since the last service.
- Inspect brake pads, discs, calipers, lines and visible hardware for condition appropriate to the car’s documented limits.
- Verify the brake fluid’s condition and service status according to Ferrari’s procedure; do not choose a fluid specification from a race-car forum.
- Inspect suspension, steering, underbody panels, cooling openings and exhaust components for damage or loose parts.
- Check the tires for cuts, bulges, uneven wear, exposed cords, age concerns and sufficient tread for both the road journey and the event.
- Confirm that wheels are undamaged and that any wheel removal and refitting is performed using the documented Ferrari procedure.
- Make sure the 12-volt and high-voltage systems have no warnings and that all required service campaigns or recalls are addressed.
Understand the 296 GTB tire choices
Ferrari’s published 296 GTB specification gives a front tire size of 245/35 ZR 20 and a rear size of 305/35 ZR 20. Treat these as published dimensions, not as permission to order tires without checking the individual car. A different wheel option, body style, market or replacement-wheel approval can change what is appropriate.

| Tire named for the 296 GTB | Use described by Michelin | What that means for a first event | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pilot Sport 4 S K1 | Predominantly road driving | A road-oriented option; a serviceable, correctly fitted set does not automatically need replacement before a novice event. | No comparative lap time, wet-performance figure, lifespan, price or universal pressure is established. |
| Pilot Sport Cup 2 R K2 | Road-legal option for drivers wishing to push the 296 GTB on track | A documented track-oriented option, not a mandatory upgrade. Confirm fitment, condition, legality and organizer acceptance first. | No claim that it is faster, safer in every condition or better for every novice driver is established. |
Decide whether a tire change is justified
Do not replace a healthy, correctly specified tire simply because the event is your first one. Replace or repair only when inspection, age, wear, damage, the owner’s intended use or the organizer’s rules justify it. If considering Pilot Sport Cup 2 R K2, verify the exact front and rear dimensions, approved fitment, current availability, road legality where you drive and whether the circuit allows it. Confirm that the replacement set is balanced, correctly mounted and checked before the trip.
Get pressure instructions from the right source
Pressure is one of the most important track-day variables, yet no Ferrari-specific cold or hot figure was established for this article. Ask Ferrari authorized service for the procedure applicable to your car and ask the organizer whether it has a tire policy. Clarify which pressure is measured cold, how hot pressure is checked, whether the car must be reset after a change and how the tires should be returned to road settings for the journey home. Do not copy numbers from a 296 Challenge, GT3, another road car or an anonymous social-media post.
Give the brakes and electronic systems proper attention
Ferrari describes the 296 GTB as using brake-by-wire and ABS evo, with electronic systems coordinating braking and vehicle dynamics. Ferrari also states in its “296 GTB: Defining Fun to Drive” material that, in track driving, grip estimation is 35% faster than in previous applications. That is an engineering comparison, not a promise that the car will compensate for worn components, poor tires or an inexperienced driver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore leaving home
- Have brake condition and fluid status checked using Ferrari’s documentation and the car’s actual service records.
- Resolve every brake, ABS, hybrid-system or chassis warning before the event; do not plan to “see whether it clears” on track.
- Ask the technician whether the current pads, discs and fluid are suitable for the planned use and expected number of sessions.
- Confirm the correct procedure for any diagnostic reset, wheel removal or brake inspection required after service.
Do not invent a brake preparation recipe
The available public material does not establish a 296-specific pad-thickness limit, disc replacement limit, brake-fluid grade, bleeding sequence, bedding procedure, torque figure or cooldown interval. Those omissions matter because brake-by-wire operation and carbon or steel component specifications can vary by configuration. Use the exact manual or an authorized technician’s written advice rather than a generic “bed-in” routine.

Prepare the driver and controls
The first limiting factor is often not the Ferrari but the driver’s unfamiliarity with the circuit, flags and braking points. Learn the track map, corner names, pit entry and pit exit before the first session. Watch the organizer’s briefing and ask where novice groups are released, how passing is signaled and what to do after a spin or mechanical warning.
Set up the cockpit while stationary
- Adjust the seat so you can press the pedals without stretching and can see the instruments without moving your shoulders.
- Set mirrors to reduce blind spots and confirm that your helmet, if required, does not interfere with the head restraint or roof.
- Learn the location and meaning of the drive-mode controls, indicators, hazard switch, pit-lane control and any warning acknowledgment before the engine is started.
- Secure phones, cameras, bottles, floor mats and luggage so nothing can reach the pedals or become a projectile.
- Practice entering and exiting the car with the required safety equipment and clothing.
Do not select a more aggressive mode merely because it is available. Ask the instructor or organizer how the event expects electronic aids to be used, then change only one setting at a time so you understand its effect.
Build a conservative learning plan
Use the first session to learn the racing line, marshal posts, flags, pit entry and braking references. Drive at a pace that leaves margin for traffic and mistakes. Increase pace only when you can repeat the line, identify the next corner before reaching it and brake consistently. A track day is not a qualifying session; passing rules and group pace take priority over a lap-time goal.
Consider formal Ferrari instruction
Ferrari’s Corso Pilota Sport page describes a two-day Fiorano experience in a 296 GTB that includes circuit driving and vehicle-control instruction. Ferrari presents the idea that the circuit is the ideal environment to enjoy a Ferrari’s performance safely; that is Ferrari’s company statement, not a guarantee for every venue or driver. Check current dates, regional enrollment, eligibility, pricing and the precise car used directly with Ferrari because availability can change.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Formal instruction is useful when you have never driven a circuit, are unsure how to read flags or want a coach to observe braking and steering. It does not replace the inspection and event-specific preparation for your own car. A course car may have different tires, setup, equipment or operating rules from your road 296.
Pack for the circuit without pretending it is a race
Pack only items that are compatible with the organizer’s rules and the Ferrari’s storage and safety requirements. The following list is a planning checklist, not a claim that every item is mandatory.
- Event confirmation, driver briefing, insurance documents and emergency contact details.
- Owner documentation and the authorized service provider’s contact information.
- Any organizer-required helmet, clothing, numbers, tow equipment or identification.
- Water, weather-appropriate clothing, hearing protection and sun protection for time outside the car.
- A tire-pressure gauge or other tool only if the organizer permits it and Ferrari’s procedure explains how to use it.
- Charging, fuel and payment arrangements suitable for the venue; verify what the circuit provides before departure.
- Basic cleaning materials and bags for securing personal items, while leaving prohibited tools and loose equipment at home.
Do not carry a spare set of race tires, jacks, torque tools or fluids as if they were required Ferrari equipment unless the organizer and your service provider have confirmed a safe, compatible procedure. Extra hardware can create more risk than it solves when used without the correct specifications.
Use a day-before and arrival checklist
The day before
- Recheck the forecast, noise requirements, timetable, briefing location, access gate and cancellation policy.
- Confirm the car’s service inspection is complete and that no warning message remains.
- Verify tire model, dimensions, tread and visible condition against the event rules and the car documentation.
- Confirm the documented road and track pressure procedure with Ferrari or authorized service; do not fill by guesswork.
- Remove loose objects and photograph the car’s exterior, wheels and tire condition for your records.
- Plan fuel or charging stops and a route that leaves time for registration and the driver briefing.
At the circuit before the first session
- Complete registration and attend the mandatory briefing before entering the pit lane.
- Walk or study the circuit map, locating marshal posts, pit entry, pit exit, runoff areas and any unusual surface changes.
- Recheck the wheels and tires visually after transport and perform only the pressure or control adjustments authorized for your car.
- Secure everything in the cabin and verify seat, mirrors, controls and communication arrangements.
- Drive the out lap as a reconnaissance lap: identify flags, traffic, grip changes and reference points rather than pursuing speed.
Manage each session and the heat cycle
Follow the organizer’s release order, passing zones and flag instructions without exception. Leave room for slower cars, give a clear signal when required and pit in if you receive a mechanical warning, feel abnormal vibration or notice a change in braking. Do not continue because a warning appears to be intermittent.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Use a repeatable session routine
- Out lap: build awareness of traffic and grip while checking that steering, brakes and pedals feel normal.
- Learning laps: use one braking reference and one line at a time; avoid changing multiple variables together.
- Last lap: follow the organizer’s cooldown guidance and leave the racing surface without blocking other drivers.
- Pit lane: stop only where permitted, record observations and inspect for leaks, damage, tire distress or warning messages.
Because exact Ferrari warm-up and cooldown procedures were not established, obtain them from the manual or authorized service before the event. Do not assume that a generic slow lap, opening the hood or leaving the car idling is the manufacturer’s required method.
Record what happened
After each session, note the session duration, weather, traffic, warning messages, brake feel, tire appearance and anything that changed. This record helps an authorized technician diagnose a problem and prevents you from relying on memory when deciding whether the car is ready for another session.
Inspect the car after the final session
Before the road trip home, follow Ferrari’s documented post-use checks. If those instructions are not available, ask authorized service rather than improvising. Look for visible tire damage, fluid leaks, loose trim, unusual smells, warning messages and any change in pedal or steering behavior. A car that completed a session is not automatically safe for the highway.
Return tires to the documented road setting only when the tires are at the specified measurement condition and the procedure allows it. Schedule a professional inspection if the event was unusually hot, a warning appeared, a tire contacted debris, braking felt inconsistent or any component was damaged. Keep the session notes and photographs with the service record.
Common preparation mistakes and the correction
| Mistake | Why it is risky | Better action |
|---|---|---|
| Applying a pressure or torque number found for another car | Wheel, tire, brake and market specifications can differ. | Use VIN-specific Ferrari documentation or authorized service instructions. |
| Assuming Cup 2 R K2 is mandatory | Michelin identifies it as an option for pushing the 296 GTB on track, not a requirement for a first event. | Inspect the installed tires and change only for a documented need, approved fitment or organizer requirement. |
| Using 296 Challenge or GT3 procedures | Race cars have different components, setup and operating assumptions. | Keep road-car preparation separate from race-car guidance. |
| Ignoring a warning because the car still drives | Electronic brake and dynamics systems depend on fault-free operation. | Pit in, report the issue and obtain a professional diagnosis. |
| Trying to learn the circuit at maximum pace | It reduces margin before you understand flags, traffic and braking points. | Start with reconnaissance and increase speed gradually. |
| Leaving event rules until arrival | The car or equipment may fail technical or noise checks. | Read the current regulations and confirm acceptance in advance. |
What the published information does and does not establish
The documented facts are useful but limited. Ferrari publishes the 296 GTB’s 245/35 ZR 20 front and 305/35 ZR 20 rear tire dimensions, describes brake-by-wire, ABS evo and related electronic systems, and reports a 35% faster grip-estimation comparison for track driving in its engineering material. Michelin names Pilot Sport 4 S K1 for predominantly road use and the road-legal Pilot Sport Cup 2 R K2 for drivers wishing to push the 296 GTB on track. Ferrari describes Corso Pilota Sport as a two-day Fiorano program using a 296 GTB and including circuit and vehicle-control instruction.
Those facts do not establish one pressure that suits every 296, a wheel torque value, a pad or disc limit, a fluid grade, a break-in sequence, a warm-up or cooldown routine, or a universal post-session interval. They also do not prove comparative lap times, wet-weather behavior, tire life or cost. Keep those decisions tied to the exact car, current Ferrari documentation, authorized service advice and the event organizer.
