How to Prepare 720p Videos for a YouTube Live Playlist on a Budget PC in India

For a budget PC, prepare a 720p YouTube Live playlist in OBS Studio: add a VLC Video source for multiple files, set the output to 1280×720, and test at 30 fps before trying 60 fps. YouTube’s current H.264 live guidance recommends CBR, 8 Mbps for 720p at either frame rate, and a two-second keyframe interval. These are starting settings, not a guarantee that a particular PC or internet connection can sustain the stream.

What you need before setting up

  • A PC that can play the video files and run OBS Studio. OBS says performance requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; basic compatibility does not guarantee smooth streaming. See OBS system requirements.
  • Your 720p video files stored locally, with enough free disk space for the playlist.
  • A sustained upload connection that can support the chosen live bitrate, plus room for normal network variation. The sources cited here do not provide an India-specific speed guarantee.
  • A YouTube channel set up for live streaming and a stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to stream to your channel.
  • OBS Studio. For a playlist made from multiple files, install VLC as well. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS says to install 64-bit VLC.

You do not need a dedicated streaming appliance to try this workflow. An external drive may help if your media library exceeds the PC’s storage, but it does not improve encoding or stream stability.

Prepare the 720p video files

Keep resolution and frame rate consistent where practical

For standard-definition-range (SDR) 720p, use a frame size of 1280×720. When preparing or exporting files, YouTube recommends MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, and matching the recorded frame rate. Its current upload guidance recommends 5 Mbps for 720p at standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 7.5 Mbps at high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps). These are upload-file recommendations, not live-stream bitrate settings.

If your source files already play correctly at 720p, you do not have to re-export them just to make a playlist. Check that their audio is present and that OBS can decode them smoothly. A mixed-frame-rate playlist can still play, but a consistent frame rate makes setup and troubleshooting simpler.

Check rights and channel suitability

Only include video and audio you have permission to use. A playlist is not exempt from YouTube’s copyright rules: music, footage, or other material may receive a Content ID claim or other copyright action even when it is prerecorded. Separately, YouTube’s channel monetization policies assess reused content at the channel level; permission alone does not guarantee monetization. Review YouTube’s current rules in YouTube Studio before building a long-running playlist, particularly if you plan to monetize it.

Build the playlist in OBS

Use VLC Video for several files

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed. Match its architecture to OBS; OBS specifically recommends 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  2. In OBS, select the scene you will use, then add a source with the + button in the Sources panel and choose VLC Video. Create a new source and open its properties.
  3. Add the local video files in the intended order. Confirm the list order before going live; OBS’s VLC Video source also offers shuffle behavior.
  4. Choose whether the playlist should stop after playback or loop. Enable looping if you want it to repeat continuously. Use shuffle only if changing the order is intentional.
  5. Preview playback in OBS. Check picture, audio level, aspect ratio, and transitions between files. The source and its loop/shuffle controls are documented in the OBS Media Sources guide.

Use Media Source for one file

For a single local video, add Media Source instead. Select the file in its properties and enable looping if you want that one video to repeat. OBS supports common local video formats; see the Media Sources guide for source details.

Set OBS for YouTube Live at 720p

  1. Set video size: In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set the output resolution to 1280×720. Choose a frame rate the source and PC can sustain; start at 30 fps on a constrained setup, then test 60 fps only if it remains smooth.
  2. Select the YouTube service: Open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect your account or enter the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Do not share or publish the key.
  3. Choose the encoder: Open Settings → Output and use an H.264 encoder. If OBS offers a compatible hardware encoder, it may offload work from the CPU; results depend on the PC and encoder. OBS explains the trade-offs in its Hardware Encoding guide.
  4. Use CBR: In the streaming output settings, select constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists a 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended H.264 ingest bitrate for both 720p30 and 720p60.
  5. Set keyframes: Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  6. Check audio: Confirm the intended audio source is active, meters move during playback, and the stream is not clipping or muted. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio and 128 Kbps stereo audio as recommended settings; check the current YouTube live encoder settings page for its full audio recommendations.

The 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended figures above apply to live ingest, not exported video files. A connection that barely reaches the selected bitrate may still be unstable; choose a setting your upload can sustain and judge it by an actual test, not by a nominal speed label.

Test the full setup before relying on it

  1. Start a private or unlisted test stream in YouTube Live Control Room if that option is available for your channel.
  2. Let the playlist run through representative video and audio, including a transition between files. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
  3. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators while OBS is running. Watch for dropped frames, buffering, missing audio, or a stream that disconnects.
  4. If the test is unstable, lower the frame rate first, then reduce the bitrate in a measured way while staying mindful of YouTube’s minimum guidance. Simplify the OBS scene and close other demanding applications. Retest after each change.
  5. Confirm the playlist loops or ends exactly as intended before scheduling or relying on a longer broadcast.

YouTube Help puts it simply: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance is in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

What to adjust when it does not work

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
OBS reports encoding lag or the picture stutters The PC cannot encode the chosen resolution, frame rate, or scene load smoothly. Try 30 fps instead of 60, simplify the scene, close other heavy applications, and test a compatible hardware encoder if OBS exposes one. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU load but is not a performance guarantee.
YouTube reports dropped frames or the stream buffers The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate consistently. Retest on the same connection, check stream health, and reduce the bitrate if needed. Avoid assuming that a connection’s advertised speed is its sustained upload capacity.
VLC Video is missing or will not load the playlist VLC may not be installed or may not match OBS architecture. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS and check the source again.
One file plays but the sequence stops The source may be configured to stop rather than loop, or the playlist settings may not match the desired behavior. Open VLC Video properties and verify file order and loop/shuffle settings. For one file, check Media Source’s loop option.
Picture is visible but audio is absent or distorted The source’s audio may be disabled, routed incorrectly, muted, or clipping. Check OBS audio meters and source properties, then inspect the YouTube preview during a test. Adjust levels so audio is audible without clipping.
YouTube preview or stream health shows an ingest problem The stream key, service, encoder, bitrate, or connection may be misconfigured. Verify the YouTube service and current stream key in OBS, use H.264 with CBR, check the keyframe interval, and consult YouTube’s live settings page for current ingest guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud
