Modern Warfare 4 preload and access dates
The dates below apply to the 2026 release schedule published by Activision. Storefronts can display a local date or a countdown that differs slightly from the Pacific Time announcement, so use the timer shown on the account that owns the game when it becomes available.

What the PC date means
Activision says players who pre-purchase Modern Warfare 4 digitally on PC can preload ahead of launch. The download can begin at the published October 15 time; it does not grant access before the entitlement’s scheduled window. Campaign access remains locked until October 16, DMZ until October 20, and the complete release until October 23.

Early access is tied to eligible digital preorder editions. A physical console purchase is not automatically converted into the digital early-access entitlement. Check the edition description on the account that owns the game, particularly if your household uses more than one console account.

Console timing is not one universal clock
Activision confirms PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X physical editions and digital platform availability, and the release information also identifies Switch 2 as a supported platform. The official material does not provide one console-wide preload hour or an exact, universal console download size. Your platform may expose a Download, Pre-load or countdown control at a different local time. Treat that store indicator as authoritative for your region and edition.
Check your edition, account and platform first
Most preload problems are entitlement or storage problems rather than a missing game file. Complete these checks before the release window:
- Sign in to the PC storefront account that made the digital purchase, or the console account that owns the game license.
- Confirm that the product is Modern Warfare 4 and that the edition includes the access window you expect.
- Check the release countdown and the platform’s current system time, region and time zone.
- Verify that the target drive is an SSD on PC and has more than the stated minimum free capacity.
- Install pending Windows, console-system and storefront updates before starting the large download.
- Use a wired connection or a strong, uncrowded Wi-Fi network if your normal connection is unstable.
Do not assume a family-shared account, a disc license or a preorder on a different storefront will show the same download control. The entitlement has to be present on the account currently signed in.
How to preload on PC
1. Prepare the SSD
Activision’s minimum specification requires 115 GB on an SSD. That figure is a floor for the listed installation, not a recommendation for the amount of free space to have before patching. Keep additional room for mandatory updates, decompression and temporary files. If your system drive is nearly full, select another supported SSD before you start rather than moving an incomplete installation later.
2. Open the purchasing storefront
Launch the PC storefront where you bought the digital edition and sign in to the purchasing account. Open your library and select Modern Warfare 4. Depending on the storefront and the current release state, the control can be labelled Download, Pre-load or Manage. Activision does not publish identical menu labels for every platform, so follow the control that your client presents.

3. Start at the published window
At 9:00 a.m. PT on October 15, select the available download or preload control. If it is not visible, refresh the library page, verify that you are using the account that made the purchase and check the platform’s release countdown. Do not delete unrelated files or repeatedly reinstall the launcher as a first response; those actions do not correct an entitlement that has not synchronized.
4. Select the destination and components
Choose the SSD with sufficient headroom. If the client offers a component or language selection, deselect only items you know you will not use. The official information does not provide a complete list of removable modes or a guaranteed gigabyte saving for each option, so the size shown by your installer is the only reliable estimate for that particular build.

Keep the client open until it reports that the preload is complete and files have been verified. A progress bar can pause while the launcher allocates space, decrypts packages or checks existing files. Avoid shutting down during that phase. After completion, leave the machine connected long enough for a launcher update or a small day-one patch to appear.
6. Confirm the early-access entitlement
Open the game’s information or manage-content screen and check that the campaign and DMZ access dates match your preorder. A completed preload does not bypass the release timer. If the campaign remains locked on October 16, confirm the edition and account before attempting a reinstall.
How to preload on PlayStation, Xbox and Switch 2
PlayStation 5
Open the game in the account’s library or the store page, then use the control shown by the console, such as Download, Pre-load or Manage content. Leave more free space than the displayed package requires because the console may need working room while applying an update. The exact package size and a universal preload hour are not established in Activision’s published information.

Xbox Series X|S
Use the purchased game’s library entry and follow the current download or preload prompt. If the console offers optional packs, review them before confirming. The Series X physical edition supplies the base game through the disc, but updates and any separately selected content still require storage and an internet connection.

Switch 2
Use the Nintendo eShop or library entry associated with the purchase and follow its displayed countdown. Because the official material does not state a single Switch 2 package size or preload hour, rely on the console’s own storage estimate and keep update headroom rather than planning around the PC’s 115 GB figure.
Physical versus digital console editions
Physical PS5 and Xbox Series X editions provide the base game from the disc, while digital editions download the license and game data. Both formats can require substantial updates. Digital preorder windows are the ones explicitly tied to campaign and DMZ early access; a retail disc’s availability depends on the retailer and the edition terms.
Understanding the 115 GB PC requirement
The 115 GB number is Activision’s official PC minimum for an SSD. It should be read together with the warning that mandatory updates may require additional storage. Installers often need temporary working space to unpack a compressed patch, replace old files and then remove the temporary data. Consequently, a drive showing exactly 115 GB free can still fail during installation or updating.
A practical headroom rule
There is no official universal headroom number, so do not present one as a requirement. Instead, check the installer’s live space calculation, keep the drive comfortably below capacity and postpone optional downloads when free space is tight. An SSD with substantially more capacity than the minimum reduces the chance that an update will stop halfway through file replacement.

Why the reported size can change
The launcher can report different values before download, after allocation and after verification. Language data, texture caches, updates and platform-specific packaging all affect the figure. A console’s displayed package is not a substitute for the PC specification, and the PC minimum is not a promise that every platform will use 115 GB.
Texture streaming: smaller local files, stricter connectivity
Activision says Modern Warfare 4 uses texture streaming across all game modes to deliver high-quality visuals while reducing the game’s overall local storage footprint. Streaming moves some visual data to the network instead of keeping every asset permanently on the drive.
What streaming changes
- It can reduce the amount of texture data stored locally compared with keeping every asset installed.
- Visual assets may depend on a stable connection while you play.
- The storage saving is a trade-off, not a way to make the entire game offline or cost-free in bandwidth.
Modes that require continuous internet
Activision’s support FAQ states that Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and DMZ require a continuous internet connection. Deleting streamed assets therefore does not create an offline fallback for those modes. If your connection is metered, monitor data usage and avoid treating texture streaming as a substitute for a local installation.
When to prefer local capacity
Choose a larger SSD or leave more free space when your connection is unreliable, data-capped or shared with other users. Streaming can be useful when drive capacity is the main constraint, but it shifts part of the requirement from storage to network availability.
Manage installation components without breaking the game
Use the platform’s own manage screen
Open the game’s Manage installation, Manage content or equivalent screen and review the packs offered by your platform. Remove a mode or language only when the interface clearly identifies it as optional. The official sources do not publish a complete component-removal matrix, so an option that appears on one platform or edition may not exist on another.

Do not promise a fixed reduction
Because component sizes vary by build and update, there is no defensible universal claim such as “removing this pack saves exactly X GB.” Record the size shown before confirming a change, and check the free-space total after the client finishes uninstalling and recalculating.
Keep required shared files
Shared technology, shaders, campaign dependencies and updates can support more than one mode. Removing an item that the client marks as required can prevent launch or trigger a repair download. If a mode is unavailable after a change, return to the manage screen and restore the component rather than deleting random folders from the installation directory.

Troubleshooting preload and install failures
The preload button is missing
- Confirm the date and time in the platform’s countdown; PC preload begins October 15 at 9:00 a.m. PT.
- Sign out and back in to the account that purchased the digital edition.
- Refresh the library or store page and check for a launcher update.
- Verify that the product page shows the correct edition and platform.
- If the control still does not appear, use the platform’s support path for an entitlement problem rather than claiming that a universal workaround exists.
The download stops for insufficient space
Check the drive’s free capacity after closing other installers and emptying only files you recognize as safe to remove. Remember that the 115 GB minimum excludes additional room that an update may need. Move large personal files or the game to a larger SSD, then restart the installation from the storefront’s resume or repair control.
An update fails after a successful preload
Leave extra free space, pause other downloads and allow the client to verify files. A patch may need temporary space even when the final installed size appears to fit. Do not remove files manually from the game directory; use the launcher’s repair or verify function if available.
Campaign is locked after October 16
Check that your edition is an eligible digital preorder and that you are signed in to the purchasing account. A physical edition, a different platform account or a preload without the required entitlement can leave the timer locked until the standard release.
Multiplayer or DMZ will not work offline
This is expected behavior under Activision’s texture-streaming design. Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and DMZ require a continuous internet connection. Reinstalling local textures cannot change that requirement.

PC prerequisites to check before October 15
Activision’s minimum PC information calls for Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB of RAM, supported processors and graphics hardware, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and broadband internet, in addition to the 115 GB SSD requirement. Confirm those items before preload day so the download is not followed by a preventable launch failure.
- In Windows System Information, check that the operating system is 64-bit and that Secure Boot is enabled.
- In the Windows security or firmware settings, verify TPM 2.0 is available and active.
- Update graphics drivers through the hardware manufacturer’s supported channel.
- Ensure the SSD uses a file system and connection supported by your PC and has the required free capacity.
- Use a broadband connection capable of sustaining a large download and later texture streaming.
Bottom line for preload day
For PC, be ready at 9:00 a.m. PT on October 15, 2026, with an SSD that has well over 115 GB free, then start the download from the account that made the purchase. Digital preorder access opens the campaign on October 16 and DMZ on October 20; the full release is October 23. Console players should trust their own store’s countdown, keep update headroom and avoid relying on an invented universal size. Texture streaming can reduce local storage, but Multiplayer and DMZ still need a continuous internet connection.
