Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If your Chromebook cannot reach its sign-in screen, use ChromeOS Recovery—not Powerwash. Start by checking the charger and letting the device charge for at least 30 minutes. If ChromeOS displays a recovery prompt, reinstall ChromeOS with internet recovery or a USB recovery drive. Powerwash is a separate factory-reset process that only works when the Chromebook can reach its sign-out or reset interface.
The right procedure depends on what you see: a dead or uncharged device needs hardware checks first, a sign-in screen allows Powerwash, and a “ChromeOS is missing or damaged” message calls for recovery. Both routes erase local data, so back up anything accessible before proceeding.

Powerwash and recovery are different resets
“Factory reset” can mean two different ChromeOS procedures. Choosing the wrong one wastes time and can erase data unnecessarily.
| Method | Use it when | Screen or equipment required | What happens to local data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Powerwash | The Chromebook reaches the sign-in screen and you need to clear a profile, settings, or ownership data. | Signed-out screen; no extra hardware. | Erases local user data, including Downloads. Google Drive files and files on separate external storage are not deleted. |
| Internet recovery | ChromeOS will not start normally, shows “ChromeOS is missing or damaged,” or repeatedly fails during startup. | Recovery mode and a usable internet connection, if the option appears. | Permanently erases the Chromebook’s internal drive and reinstalls ChromeOS. |
| USB recovery | Recovery is required but internet recovery is unavailable, unsupported, or fails. | Recovery mode, a second Chromebook or Windows/Mac computer with Chrome, and a USB flash drive of at least 8 GB. | Permanently erases the internal drive. Creating the recovery media also erases the USB drive. |
Powerwash cannot normally be launched from a Chromebook that never reaches the sign-in or reset screen. For a truly non-booting device, follow the recovery path below.
#1 Best Overall
- 10 Pack USB Sticks: 10 pieces of USB flash drives are fit for a variety of scenarios. Whether the flash drives USB are used as school supplies for high school students to backup data storaged in USB jump drives or music USB flash drive for car, zip drive can meet the basic storage needs. USB drive pack of 10 has a higher cost performance. USB flash drive pack of 10 is suitable for ordinary users with appropriate needs, but also for special groups such as companies, schools or other organizations that need a large number of U disks. In short, thumb drives can meet the needs of different customers.
- Swivel Design: With the 360° swivel design, all the ports of the thumb drives 10 pack can be hidden inside the metal casing. When needed, simply swivel the casing gently and the ports will automatically expose, making it convenient for you to insert and remove. This design is not only fashionable and beautiful but also more user-friendly, whether you'd like your flash drive for photos, flash drive for video storage, or memory sticks for computers. In addition, the swivel design can effectively protect the interface from damage and pollution, increasing the service life of the flash USB drive.
- Portability: The small hole on the thumbdrive USB is designed for lanyards, which is convenient to carry. Besides, the USB flash drive keychain can also be tied through the small hole to prevent loss. This design is very thoughtful and reflects the humanized design concept of the memorias USB flash drive.
- Plug and Play: You can use the computer storage flash drive immediately for data storage or backup without any additional installation after inserting it into the computer. This plug and play feature makes the laptop storage drive a very convenient external ssd. You can copy the required data files to the external drive at any time without worrying about computer system compatibility issues. In addition, the design of the external flash drive enables it to be quickly recognized by the system after being inserted into the computer. (NOTE: Please check if your device has a USB-A port before purchasing. If not, a USB-C hub is needed.)
- FAT32 format: The default system format for 8GB flash drive is FAT32. FAT32 USB flash drive is widely applicable, such as in televisions, DVD players, vehicles, printers, embroidery machines, etc. Be patient if you have problems with system recognition. It may take some time for initial recognition, but it will happen.
Use the least destructive option that matches the symptom. A profile problem after ChromeOS starts does not require reinstalling the operating system, while a missing or corrupted operating system cannot be fixed by merely clearing a user profile.
Check power before erasing anything
A black screen can indicate an empty battery, a bad outlet, a damaged cable, or a hardware fault rather than a ChromeOS problem. Follow Google’s hardware checks before attempting a reset.
- Disconnect accessories such as USB drives, mice, docks, memory cards, and external hard drives. A faulty accessory can interfere with startup.
- Connect the Chromebook’s charger directly to a known-working wall outlet. Check that the cable is fully seated at both ends and look for fraying or bent connectors.
- Leave the Chromebook charging for at least 30 minutes. A deeply discharged battery may show no immediate response.
- Try turning it on again. Check for a charging LED, keyboard light, fan noise, or any change on the display.
- If there is still no power light, no display, or no charging indication, continue with Google’s hardware troubleshooting guidance at Fix hardware and system problems.
If the Chromebook still will not charge after those checks, Google recommends resetting the Chromebook hardware according to its hardware instructions and then contacting the device manufacturer if the problem continues. A factory reset cannot repair a failed battery, charging port, display, motherboard, or other physical component.

Do not repeatedly attempt recovery on a device that shows no sign of receiving power. Recovery needs stable power, and interrupting it because the battery dies can create another failure on top of the original one.
Understand what will be erased
Back up anything you can access before starting. Downloaded files and other data stored on the Chromebook’s internal drive are at risk.
- Google describes recovery this way: “Recovery permanently erases everything on your Chromebook’s hard drive, even your downloaded files.”
- For Powerwash, Google states: “A factory reset erases all user data on your Chromebook’s hard drive, including all the files in the Downloads folder.”
- Files already synchronized to Google Drive remain in Drive. Files on a separate external storage device are outside the Chromebook’s internal drive and are not removed by Powerwash.
- Browser settings, locally stored profiles, Android or Linux data, offline documents, and locally saved downloads may be lost unless they were synchronized or copied elsewhere.
If the device still reaches ChromeOS, sign in and copy important files to Google Drive or external storage. Check that synchronization has finished rather than assuming a file has uploaded. If it cannot boot far enough to do that, assume local files may be unrecoverable before proceeding.
Recovery is the more drastic operation: it removes and reinstalls ChromeOS. Even if the same Google Account is used afterward, that does not restore files that existed only in local storage. The account restores cloud-synchronized items, not an erased internal drive.

Use Powerwash when the Chromebook reaches its reset screen
Powerwash is appropriate for persistent profile or settings problems, preparing a Chromebook for another person, or clearing local data when ChromeOS still starts. It is not a replacement for recovery on a machine that cannot reach the sign-in flow.
Powerwash from the sign-out screen
- Sign out of the Chromebook so the account-selection screen is visible.
- Hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r.
- In the dialog, select Restart.
- After the Chromebook restarts, select Powerwash, then Continue.
- Follow the on-screen setup instructions. The first Google Account used after the reset becomes the Chromebook’s owner account.
Do not interrupt the restart or close the lid while Powerwash is running. When setup returns, connect to Wi-Fi and sign in with the account that should own the device. If you are handing the Chromebook to someone else, let that person complete the first sign-in so ownership is assigned correctly.
If the Powerwash shortcut does nothing
Make sure you are signed out rather than inside an active session. The shortcut is intended for the sign-in or account-selection screen. If the Chromebook cannot reach that screen, stop trying Powerwash and enter recovery mode instead. A black screen, startup loop, or recovery warning is evidence that the reset interface is unavailable.
Managed work or school Chromebooks
Organization-managed Chromebooks can have factory-reset controls restricted. Google says ordinary consumer factory reset is not available for managed devices. Ask the school or workplace administrator before erasing or recovering one; management enrollment may need to be restored by the administrator afterward. An administrator may also need to release, re-enroll, or otherwise authorize the device after recovery.

Recovery removes the existing ChromeOS installation and installs a fresh copy. Use it for a “ChromeOS is missing or damaged” message, a startup loop, or a device that never gets far enough to show the sign-in screen.
Enter recovery mode
Remove every connected accessory first. Then use the sequence that matches the hardware:
- Most Chromebook laptops: Hold Esc + Refresh, press the Power button, release Power, and keep holding Esc and Refresh until the recovery message appears.
- Some models: Google specifies Esc + Maximize instead of Esc + Refresh. The Maximize key is usually the rectangle-shaped key in the top row.
- Chromebook tablets: Hold Volume Up + Volume Down + Power for at least 10 seconds. Release the keys when the recovery screen appears.
Key labels and supported recovery methods vary by model. If the screen gives a different instruction, follow the device’s on-screen direction. If no recovery screen appears, disconnect power accessories, repeat the sequence carefully, and try the manufacturer’s documented key combination.

- LED Indicator: The end of the USB storage flash drive is designed with an indicator. The LED indicator lights up when you plug the zip drive usb into the devices, the light blinks while write/read activities are in process. In this case, do not remove the USB drive pack. Otherwise, data integrity and the service life of the USB drives are affected.
Keep the charger connected while entering recovery and throughout the reinstall. If the Chromebook is completely unresponsive even after charging, that points more strongly to a power or hardware issue than to a damaged ChromeOS installation.
Choose internet recovery when it is offered
Newer supported Chromebooks may show Recover using internet connection on the recovery screen. This avoids preparing a USB drive and does not require another computer.
- Enter recovery mode using the model-appropriate sequence.
- Choose Recover using internet connection if that option appears.
- Select a Wi-Fi network and enter its password when prompted.
- Confirm that you understand the internal drive will be erased, then follow the prompts.
- Leave the charger connected and wait. Google says the Chromebook restarts after the recovery process finishes.
A weak or captive-portal network can interrupt the download. Use a reliable private network when possible. Avoid shutting the lid, pressing the power button, or disconnecting the charger while the image is downloading or being installed.
If internet recovery is not listed, repeatedly fails, or the Chromebook is too old to support it, use USB recovery. The absence of the option does not necessarily mean the Chromebook is broken; recovery features vary by model and support status.
Create and use a USB recovery drive
USB recovery requires another working computer: either a second Chromebook or a Windows/Mac computer with Chrome. You also need a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Preparing the drive erases its contents, so copy anything important from it first. Google notes that some flash drives may not work reliably, so do not assume every 8 GB drive is compatible.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallPrepare the recovery media
- On the working computer, open Chrome and install or open the Chromebook Recovery Utility.
- Start the utility and choose the option to create recovery media.
- Select the affected Chromebook’s model. If prompted, enter the model number shown on the recovery screen or printed on the device. Match the model exactly; a recovery image for a different Chromebook is not a safe substitute.
- Insert the USB flash drive, select it, and confirm the warning that its contents will be erased.
- Let the utility download the correct ChromeOS image and write it to the drive. Do not remove the drive until the utility reports completion.
Use a directly connected USB port rather than a dock or hub when possible. The important requirements are a second computer with Chrome, the correct model selection, and a drive with at least 8 GB of capacity; Google does not identify one universally compatible brand.
Install ChromeOS from the drive
- With the affected Chromebook turned off, disconnect other accessories and insert the prepared recovery drive.
- Enter recovery mode with the appropriate key sequence.
- At the recovery prompt, choose Recover using external disk or the equivalent USB option.
- Select the inserted drive and confirm. The internal storage will be erased and ChromeOS will be reinstalled.
- Keep the Chromebook connected to power and wait for the process to finish and restart.
- Remove the USB drive only when the Chromebook tells you to or after it has restarted into the normal setup screen.
If the utility cannot write the image, recreate the drive after erasing it, or try a different USB flash drive. A drive that works for ordinary file storage may still be incompatible with Chromebook recovery. Do not assume a failed USB attempt proves the Chromebook itself is defective. Conversely, repeated failures with more than one correctly prepared drive can indicate a hardware problem or an unsupported model.

What to do after recovery
Complete setup
When ChromeOS starts, choose the language and keyboard layout, connect to Wi-Fi, and sign in. The first Google Account used after a reset becomes the owner account on a consumer Chromebook. Restore synchronized settings and copy back only the files you previously backed up.
If the Chromebook belongs to a school or employer, stop at the management prompt and contact the administrator rather than creating a personal owner account. Consumer setup steps do not override organizational enrollment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck updates and hardware
Allow ChromeOS to install any available updates, then restart once more. Test the keyboard, trackpad, display, speakers, camera, Wi-Fi, and charging behavior. If the same boot failure returns immediately after a successful recovery, the underlying issue may be hardware or an unsupported older device rather than a corrupted installation.
Older devices
Google warns that older Chromebooks may no longer receive updates and that recovery may not be possible for every model. An unavailable recovery image or unsupported device requires manufacturer assistance; do not substitute a recovery image for a different model.

The Chromebook shows no recovery screen
- Charge it for at least 30 minutes and retry with the charger connected.
- Remove docks, USB devices, SD cards, and external displays.
- Use the correct sequence for the model: Esc + Refresh on most laptops, Esc + Maximize on some, or the three-button sequence on tablets.
- If there is still no response, treat it as a possible hardware fault and contact the manufacturer.
Internet recovery is missing
Not every Chromebook supports internet recovery. Use the Chromebook Recovery Utility on another computer and select USB recovery instead. If the model cannot be selected or no image is available, Google’s recovery support and the manufacturer are the appropriate next contacts.
The USB drive is rejected
- Confirm that the drive has at least 8 GB of capacity.
- Recreate the media with the utility; the creation process must be allowed to erase and reformat the drive.
- Try another flash drive, because Google warns that some drives do not work well for recovery.
- Verify that the selected model exactly matches the affected Chromebook.
Recovery stops partway through
Keep the charger connected, retry with a stable internet connection if using internet recovery, or recreate the USB media. If multiple known-good recovery attempts fail with the same error, document the message and contact the Chromebook manufacturer. A security-module error also requires administrator or manufacturer support rather than repeated Powerwash attempts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Powerwash a Chromebook that will not turn on?
Usually no. Powerwash requires the sign-out or account-selection screen. If the Chromebook never reaches that interface, enter recovery mode and reinstall ChromeOS instead.
Will recovery delete my Downloads folder?
Yes. Recovery permanently erases the Chromebook’s internal drive, including downloaded files and other local data. Back up anything accessible first.
Does Powerwash delete Google Drive files?
No. Powerwash removes local user data, including Downloads, but files already stored in Google Drive and on separate external storage are not deleted.
Recommended Free Tools
What size USB drive is needed for Chromebook recovery?
Google specifies a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating recovery media erases that drive, and some drives may not work reliably.
Why is internet recovery not showing on my Chromebook?
Internet recovery is available only on supported models. If it is missing, use the Chromebook Recovery Utility on another computer to create USB recovery media.
What if Esc and Refresh do not open recovery mode?
Disconnect accessories, charge the Chromebook, and verify the model-specific sequence. Some models use Esc plus Maximize, while Chromebook tablets use Volume Up, Volume Down, and Power for at least 10 seconds.
Can I reset a school or work Chromebook myself?
Contact the administrator first. Managed devices can restrict consumer factory reset, and the organization may need to authorize, release, or re-enroll the Chromebook after recovery.
What should I do if recovery fails repeatedly?
Keep the charger connected, retry with stable internet or newly created USB media, and verify the exact model. If multiple attempts fail, contact the manufacturer; security-module errors also require administrator or manufacturer support.
The Bottom Line
Use Powerwash only when ChromeOS reaches its sign-out or reset screen. If the Chromebook will not boot that far, charge it for at least 30 minutes, disconnect accessories, enter recovery mode, and choose internet recovery or USB media of at least 8 GB. Both procedures erase local data, so back up first whenever possible. Persistent charging or recovery failures—and all managed-device issues—belong with the Chromebook maker or your organization’s administrator.
