A USB-C plug does not guarantee a picture—or enough power. For a one-cable setup, the computer or phone, monitor, and cable must all support the monitor’s video method, usually DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode), and the host must supply enough power. If you connect by HDMI, use a separate power source for the monitor.
What USB-C can—and cannot—tell you
USB-C describes the connector, not every feature carried through it. A port may support charging or data without supporting video. ASUS notes that USB-C can serve functions such as video display or power input, and recommends checking the specifications for the exact device: ASUS USB-C display FAQ.

For a typical USB-C display connection, the computer or phone, monitor, and cable must all support DP Alt Mode. Some systems use Thunderbolt or another specifically documented display method. Check the host’s specifications and the monitor manual rather than relying on the port’s shape or charging capability. Choose the connection that matches your setup

ASUS says its DisplayLink setup requires a driver. Follow the instructions for your specific monitor and operating system; do not assume a DisplayLink monitor works like a DP Alt Mode display.

Set up USB-C video and power
- Check both devices. Look up the exact host model and confirm support for DP Alt Mode, Thunderbolt, or the video method specified by the monitor. In the monitor manual, identify which USB-C port accepts video; another port may be power-input-only.
- Start with the supplied cable. Connect it directly from the monitor’s video-capable USB-C port to the supported host port. If you need a replacement, choose a cable explicitly specified for video—not one described only for charging or basic data.
- Check whether the host can power the display. A single cable can carry video and power on compatible equipment, but only if the host provides enough power for that monitor. Compare the monitor’s stated input requirements with the host’s output; there is no universal wattage that applies to all portable monitors.
- Add separate power if needed. Use a USB-C power adapter compatible with the monitor’s stated voltage and current requirements. This can help when the monitor will not turn on, appears dim, or behaves unreliably on host power alone. Do not assume a charger is suitable just because its plug fits.
Fix common connection problems
The monitor turns on but shows no picture
- Confirm that the host port supports video—not just USB-C charging or data—and that the monitor is connected to its video-capable input.
- Check that the cable supports the video method in use. A charging-only or basic data cable may fit without carrying a display signal.
- Connect directly to the host instead of through a hub or dock, then test another supported port or cable. Microsoft recommends direct connections when troubleshooting USB-C feature compatibility.
- If the monitor uses DisplayLink over USB 3.0, install or update the driver specified by its manufacturer. Do not expect DP Alt Mode plug-and-play behavior from a DisplayLink setup.
The monitor will not turn on, is dim, or is unstable
- Check the monitor’s required power input and whether the host can provide it over USB-C.
- Try a compatible separate USB-C power adapter, matching the monitor’s voltage and current requirements.
- If using HDMI for video, connect power separately: HDMI does not power the display.
A hub, dock, or adapter makes the setup fail
Remove extra devices and test the monitor with a direct connection to a supported host port. Hubs and docks can complicate alternate-mode connections, and a port’s availability does not guarantee that it supports the monitor’s required video features. Once the direct setup works, add the hub or dock back and check its specifications.
What to verify before replacing a cable or monitor
- Video method: DP Alt Mode, Thunderbolt, or DisplayLink, as specified for the exact host and monitor.
- Port role: Which monitor USB-C port accepts video and which, if any, is power input only.
- Cable capability: Explicit video support for the connection method, not just a USB-C connector.
- Power needs: The monitor’s stated input requirements and whether the host or adapter can meet them.
- Software: Any manufacturer-required DisplayLink driver and operating-system instructions.
These checks are model-specific. For example, BenQ’s USB-C troubleshooting FAQ advises checking laptop DP Alt Mode support, while Dell’s no-video guidance identifies DP Alt Mode or Thunderbolt host support for the listed portable-monitor models. Use the documentation for your own devices when deciding whether a port, cable, or power source is compatible.
