Centering the phone is the best starting point, but the coil is not always at the phone’s geometric center, so adjust its position if charging does not start or keeps stopping.
Where should you place a phone on a wireless charger?
On a flat pad, start with the phone centered and screen-up. If the pad marks a charging area or the charger maker specifies a placement point, follow that guidance. The goal is to line up the phone’s receiver coil with the charger’s active coil—not necessarily to match the phone’s outline to the pad’s center.

Apple advises placing an iPhone in the charger’s center or where the charger manufacturer recommends, and says a charging icon should appear within a few seconds. Apple’s iPhone wireless-charging instructions are specific to iPhone; other phone models may have different coil positions.
Why the phone’s center may not be the coil’s center
Coil placement varies by phone. Samsung’s US troubleshooting guide says the Galaxy Z Fold8’s coil is near the bottom and instructs users to place that area over the center of the pad. Some older phone designs also have off-center coils, as noted in Belkin’s wireless-charging troubleshooting guidance. Check the manual for your exact phone and charger when the usual centered position does not work.

How to position and test the phone
- Check compatibility and power. Confirm that the phone supports wireless charging and that the charger supports your phone. Connect it with the supplied or manufacturer-recommended power adapter.
- Set up the charger securely. Place a flat pad on a stable, level surface, unless its instructions specify another orientation.
- Place the phone screen-up. Start centered on the pad, or line up the phone’s coil with the marked active area or the position specified in the manuals.
- Wait a few seconds and check the screen. Look for a charging icon or notification. A phone resting on a pad is not proof that charging has started.
- Adjust if needed. Move the phone a small amount in different directions and check again. Belkin recommends adjusting placement when no charging notice appears.
- Clear possible interference. If charging is slow or intermittent, remove the case and any wallet, card, ring, magnetic accessory, or metal item attached to or between the phone and charger. Clear debris from both surfaces and test again.
What to remove—and what to know about cases
Metal objects, magnets, RFID or credit cards, and some cases or accessories can interfere with charging. Metal or magnetic items may also create risks for cards or magnetic strips. If you are unsure whether a case is compatible, remove it as a troubleshooting test rather than assuming every case will work.
Case limits are device- and setup-specific. Samsung’s US guidance states a maximum thickness of 5 mm for non-Samsung cases in the context covered by its support page; that is not a universal thickness limit for all phones and chargers. Consult the guidance for your own model at Samsung Support US.

Why wireless charging may stop or run slowly
No charging icon appears
- Check that the charger is plugged into the recommended power adapter and that the phone and charger are compatible.
- Shift the phone slightly, or use the placement instructions for its model.
- Remove the case and accessories, and clear debris from the charging surfaces.
- Check the charger’s manual. Belkin lists no phone notification, an error light, or no light as possible signs of an alignment or charging problem.
Charging starts, then stops
Movement can break alignment. Vibration may shift an iPhone on a charger, and an unstable surface can move any phone; use a stable placement and reposition it if needed. A case, accessory, debris, or a mismatch between the phone and charger can also contribute. Samsung notes that misalignment may interrupt charging and that third-party chargers can have different coil layouts.

Placement is only one factor. The phone, charger, power adapter, and case must support the charging mode you expect; phone condition and the surrounding environment can also affect charging. A correctly aligned phone is not a guarantee of a particular charging speed.

For example, Samsung’s US page describes Qi2/MPP fast charging up to 15W for a compatible setup. That figure is specific to the stated standard and compatibility conditions, not a general speed promise for wireless charging.
The phone becomes warm
Some warmth can be normal. Apple says iPhone temperature management may limit charging above 80 percent if the battery becomes too warm. Move the phone and charger to a cooler, ventilated place and let the phone cool. If it becomes unusually hot or the problem persists, stop charging and follow the device maker’s support advice.

A foldable phone will not charge
Follow the instructions for the exact foldable model: whether it should be open or closed, which surface faces the charger, and where its coil sits can vary. Samsung’s US guidance says supported Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models should be closed with the rear side facing down; it gives a separate coil-position instruction for the Z Fold8. Other manufacturers’ foldables may have different instructions; see Samsung Gulf’s wireless-charging troubleshooting guidance and your device’s local support page.
Would a stand or magnetic charger make positioning easier?
A stand may make it easier to keep a phone in a consistent position, while a flat pad leaves placement to the user. Magnetic alignment can help only when the phone, case, and charger support the relevant system. Apple describes MagSafe as providing optimal magnetic alignment; Belkin says its Qi2-enabled stand aligns the phone. Neither statement means every phone or case is magnetically compatible, or that alignment alone guarantees a particular charging rate.

When comparing a pad with a stand or magnetic charger, check phone and case compatibility, whether the charger identifies an active placement area, stability against movement, supported charging standard and power profile, and the required adapter. A stand’s angle and shape may also make the coil easier to position. The manufacturers’ support information does not establish one format as universally fastest.
