The most reliable high-end speaker setup starts with a symmetrical room layout and a near-equilateral stereo triangle: the left speaker, right speaker and listening seat should be roughly equal distances apart. Put both speakers in equivalent acoustic surroundings, keep the direct path to your ears clear, place the tweeters at seated ear height, and begin with modest toe-in. Then change one variable at a time—spacing, wall clearance, seat distance or angle—while listening to a familiar recording.
There is no universal distance or angle. Room dimensions, furniture, windows, floor and ceiling reflections, speaker dispersion and the manufacturer’s instructions all matter. The measurements below are starting points, not rules that override the manual for your model.

Build the stereo triangle before changing anything else
Stereo imaging depends first on timing. If the left and right speakers are not similar distances from your ears, one channel arrives earlier and the phantom center shifts. Start from the listening seat, mark the room’s centerline, and create matching left and right positions around it.

Measure from the acoustic center of each speaker (normally around the tweeter) to your listening position. Make the left-to-right speaker spacing approximately the same as the distance from each speaker to your ears. Klipsch and Cambridge Audio both describe symmetry and an equilateral triangle as the dependable baseline.

If the center image sounds vague or vocals spread across the middle, try a slightly narrower triangle before adding electronic processing. Moving both speakers inward by the same small amount often increases center focus while preserving channel balance. Make equal changes to both sides so the room remains symmetrical.
Choose the better wall and centerline
Use the wall that gives both speakers similar side-wall distance, floor area and furniture. Avoid placing one speaker beside a thick curtain while the other sits next to bare glass, or one speaker in a corner while the other has open space. A centered layout is usually more predictable than a visually convenient off-center arrangement.
Windows, shelves, cabinets and large screens can create different early reflections on each side. If you cannot make the room perfectly symmetrical, place the speakers and seat where the first reflections and nearby objects are as similar as possible, then use small toe-in changes to reduce the remaining imbalance.

How far should high-end speakers be from the walls?
Boundary distance changes both bass and reflections. A wall reinforces low frequencies; nearby side walls also send early reflections toward the listening seat, which can soften image precision. Begin with a measured clearance and then listen for the room’s response.

Starting distances from published guidance
| Guidance | Starting point | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge Audio room rule | About one-fifth of the room dimension from each boundary | Use as an initial position for similarly placed speakers, then adjust in small increments. |
| ADAM Audio SX monitor manual (2016) | At least 40 cm (16 inches) from surrounding walls | Treat this as a minimum for SX monitors; the model’s manual takes precedence over a generic rule. |
“One-fifth” is a starting proportion, not a promise that every room will sound best there. Measure the same reference point on both cabinets, keep the distances matched, and mark the floor with masking tape. If bass is heavy or slow, pull both speakers farther from the front wall and corners. If the sound becomes too thin, move them back in equal steps.
Keep speakers away from corners
Two nearby boundaries reinforce bass more strongly than one. Corner placement can produce a large, uneven low-frequency peak at some seats and a deep cancellation at others. Move the speakers forward and sideways together rather than correcting only the speaker on the boomy side; asymmetrical moves can damage the phantom image.
Do not block ports, woofers or tweeters with furniture. Follow the manufacturer’s required clearance for rear- or side-ported designs, since port tuning and driver radiation differ by model.

Place the main seat on the room centerline, facing the speakers. Keep it away from the exact center of the room and from the back wall when possible; those locations commonly coincide with strong low-frequency cancellations or peaks. Move the seat forward or backward in small, repeatable steps while keeping it centered between the speakers.

Why the best bass seat may not be the best image seat
Cambridge Audio notes that “the spot that gives you the best bass usually isn’t the spot that gives you the best stereo image.” Bass wavelengths are long, so room modes can make one seat powerful and another weak even when the stereo triangle is geometrically correct. Choose the seat that gives a stable center image and accept a moderate bass compromise, then address remaining low-frequency problems with placement or treatment.
Large-room listening distances
Klipsch’s current Jubilee placement guidance specifies a 12–15-foot listening distance for that loudspeaker. That figure applies to the Jubilee guidance, not to high-end speakers generally. For other models, use the triangle relationship and the manufacturer’s stated listening distance rather than copying the Jubilee number.
Put the tweeters at seated ear height
The tweeter should normally be close to the height of your ears in the listening position. This keeps the direct sound on-axis and makes the tonal balance and image more consistent. Sit in your normal listening posture—not standing, leaning forward or reclining unusually—when you set the height.

Why dedicated stands matter for bookshelf speakers
Cambridge Audio calls dedicated stands “probably the single best upgrade for a bookshelf speaker.” A correctly sized stand places the tweeter at ear height, provides a repeatable position and can reduce rattles caused by furniture. It also lets you move the speaker into the room instead of being limited by a shelf.
Choose stands that are stable, appropriately tall and compatible with the cabinet’s footprint. Secure the speaker according to its instructions, leave ventilation and port clearance, and check that neither stand rocks when lightly pressed. A shelf or cabinet can work when it is rigid and correctly positioned, but avoid hollow surfaces that buzz or couple both channels unevenly.
How much toe-in should high-end speakers have?
Start with both speakers aimed slightly inward, then adjust by equal amounts. Cambridge Audio’s Head of Acoustics, Ollie Marshall, gives 10–15 degrees as a typical starting range: “Usually 10 to 15 degrees is about right.” He also reports that convincing imaging usually needs some toe-in, while pointing speakers straight at the listener or perfectly straight ahead has rarely worked well in his experience.
| Toe-in choice | Likely result | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| More toe-in | Tighter hotspot image and less direct side-wall contribution | One primary listener seeking a precise center and sharply focused stage. |
| Less toe-in | Broader, more rounded presentation | Several listeners sharing the sofa or a room where strong on-axis treble is fatiguing. |
| No toe-in | Works with some wide-dispersion designs | DALI says certain wide-dispersion speakers are intended to work without toe-in. |
| Direct aiming from an equilateral triangle | About 30 degrees per speaker by DALI’s geometric description | A geometry reference, not a universal setting; dispersion design can make a smaller angle preferable. |
DALI summarizes the trade-off this way: “More speaker toe-in typically optimises stereo performance at the hotspot, while less toe-in typically results in a more rounded presentation that’s perhaps more suited to shared listening.” If the center vocal becomes too narrow or treble too prominent, reduce the angle symmetrically. If the center is vague and side-wall reflections dominate, increase it in small steps.

A repeatable setup procedure
- Select the wall and centerline. Choose the orientation that gives left and right speakers comparable side-wall, floor and furniture conditions. Mark the room centerline and the listening seat.
- Place the seat first. Put your main chair on the centerline, away from the exact room center and, if possible, not directly against the rear wall.
- Form the triangle. Set speaker spacing approximately equal to each speaker-to-seat distance. If the center image is diffuse, start slightly narrower while keeping both speakers equidistant from the seat.
- Set height and stability. Put the tweeters near seated ear height. Use dedicated stands for bookshelf speakers when furniture cannot provide the right height and rigidity. Confirm that both cabinets are level, secure and unobstructed.
- Establish wall clearance. Begin with Cambridge Audio’s one-fifth-of-the-room-dimension rule, or at least 40 cm (16 inches) from surrounding walls for ADAM SX monitors. Keep the two clearances matched and follow the speaker manual if it specifies another distance.
- Apply gentle toe-in. Start around 10–15 degrees, with each speaker aimed just inside or at the listening position depending on the model. Wide-dispersion designs may need little or no toe-in.
- Choose a diagnostic recording. Use a familiar vocal or acoustic track with a centered singer and identifiable left-right instruments. Listen at a moderate level so room excitation does not mask changes.
- Change one variable only. Move both speakers the same amount when changing spacing or wall clearance. For each trial, alter only spacing, seat distance, clearance or toe-in, then listen again and write down the result.
- Mark the best positions. Use masking tape on the floor for speaker feet and the seat. Record distances from the wall so you can restore the setup after cleaning or furniture changes.
Diagnose common problems by symptom
The vocal is not centered
- Recheck that both speakers are the same distance from the seat and that the seat is on the centerline.
- Match toe-in and verify that one speaker is not beside a curtain, cabinet or open doorway while the other is beside a hard wall.
- Check polarity and cable connections; a polarity error can hollow out the center image.
The image is wide but vague
- Narrow the triangle slightly while keeping the seat centered.
- Increase toe-in a few degrees on both sides.
- Move speakers farther from strong side-wall reflection points and remove objects that block the direct path.
Bass is boomy or one-note
- Pull both speakers farther from corners or the front wall in equal increments.
- Move the listening seat forward or backward on the centerline; the loudest bass seat is not necessarily the best imaging seat.
- After placement is optimized, consider bass traps or other low-frequency treatment.
Bass is weak at the seat
- Try a small, symmetrical move of the speakers toward the front wall.
- Move the seat away from a cancellation point while preserving the triangle.
- Confirm that ports are not blocked and that the speaker’s required boundary distance has been respected.
The sound is bright, echoey or fatiguing
- Reduce excessive toe-in if the speaker is very directional and you are sitting directly on-axis.
- Add soft furnishings such as a rug, curtains or upholstered seating to reduce hard-surface reflections.
- Use suitable absorption panels only after the basic geometry and symmetry are correct.
Use room treatment after placement, not instead of it
Placement and symmetry should be solved before buying treatment. A rug between speakers and seat can reduce floor reflections; curtains can soften large glass areas; absorption panels can control strong first reflections; and bass traps can help with persistent low-frequency buildup. Treatment cannot correct unequal speaker-to-seat distances, a blocked tweeter or a seat placed in a severe room null.
Add one change at a time and listen again. An overly damped room can lose ambience, while a bare room can make the stereo stage splashy and unstable. Keep the treatment symmetrical where possible, especially at the first-reflection points beside the listening position.
Recheck the setup whenever the room changes
Furniture, shelves, curtains and rugs alter reflections and sometimes bass. Recheck the center image after moving a sofa, adding a cabinet or changing floor coverings. Use the tape marks and your written distances to restore the known-good geometry, then make only the smallest adjustment needed for the new room condition.
Klipsch’s support guidance captures the reason to iterate: “Obviously, because every room, speaker and component setup is different, there is no way to create a ‘one size fits all’ solution.” The practical goal is not a magic measurement; it is a stable, symmetrical baseline refined by controlled listening and the instructions for your exact speaker.
Quick Recap
A concise decision guide
- Start here: symmetrical wall, centered seat and near-equilateral triangle.
- For wall distance: begin around one-fifth of the room dimension; ADAM SX monitors specify at least 40 cm (16 inches) from surrounding walls.
- For height: place tweeters at seated ear level, using stable dedicated stands when needed.
- For toe-in: begin at 10–15 degrees, then trade hotspot focus against shared-listening coverage; follow the model’s dispersion guidance.
- For uneven bass: move speakers and seat before adding bass traps.
- For a changing room: mark positions, document measurements and revisit the setup after furniture or treatment changes.
