Place the two active speakers and your listening seat as the three points of an approximately equilateral triangle: each speaker should be about as far from you as it is from the other speaker, producing a roughly 60-degree angle. Keep the left and right sides mirror-symmetric, put the tweeters or acoustic axes at seated ear height, aim both speakers at the listening position, and begin with modest toe-in. Only after this geometry is correct should you move speakers away from boundaries, reduce strong reflections, and investigate room modes.
Start with the stereo triangle
Accurate phantom-center imaging depends more on geometry and symmetry than on a particular brand of active speaker. Sit on the room’s left-right symmetry axis, then position the speakers so the distance from the left speaker to your ears, the distance from the right speaker to your ears, and the distance between the speakers are approximately equal.

Use a 60-degree included angle
This arrangement is commonly described as an equilateral stereo triangle. Mitchell Acoustics, HARMAN Professional Solutions, Focal, Teufel and ADAM all use the same baseline: each speaker is about 30 degrees to either side of straight ahead, for a 60-degree angle between the speakers. Measure from the acoustic center of each monitor, not from the outside edge of its cabinet.

As a practical example, if your ears are 2 metres from each speaker, begin with roughly 2 metres between the acoustic centers of the speakers. A smaller room may require a shorter triangle; the relationship matters more than a particular distance.

Make the listening seat the reference point
Use the seat where you do most of your critical listening as the fixed reference. Genelec’s current monitor-placement guidance says the listener should be on the room’s symmetry axis and that the left and right speakers should have equal distances to nearby walls. A sofa pushed against one side wall, or one speaker tucked into a corner while the other has open space, creates different reflections and bass loading even when the speakers appear to point at the same place.
- Mark the centerline of the room or the usable listening area with tape.
- Center the seat on that line before adjusting the speakers.
- Measure both speaker-to-seat distances and both side-wall distances.
- Keep the front faces of the monitors on the same line unless the manufacturer’s instructions require another arrangement.
Set tweeter height and aiming before fine adjustments
Put the acoustic axis at seated ear height
HARMAN recommends placing tweeters at ear height. Genelec gives a typical monitor acoustic-axis height of 1.2–1.4 metres from the floor, measured for a seated listening position. The exact height depends on your chair and the monitor’s design, so use the manufacturer’s specified acoustic center when one is provided.
Adjustable stands are usually the cleanest way to reach the correct height. On a desk, use stable monitor stands or isolation pads rather than balancing a speaker on books or an unstable shelf. HARMAN explicitly recommends isolation pads, which can also help keep both monitors at the same height and angle.
Aim both speakers at your ears
ADAM’s guidance is to point the acoustic center toward the listener’s ears. Rotate each monitor around its vertical axis so its intended listening axis intersects your head at the reference seat. If the monitors are vertically oriented, keep them upright unless their documentation specifies a different orientation; do not change orientation on one side only.
Check height and aim from the actual seated position, not while standing. A few centimetres of height difference can change the balance between direct sound and the floor or ceiling reflection, while unequal angles make one speaker arrive from a different direction.

Tune toe-in as a controlled trade-off
Begin with modest inward rotation
Teufel gives approximately 15 degrees of toe-in as a starting point. From the reference seat, rotate both speakers inward by the same amount so their axes meet at or just behind your head. Listen to a familiar vocal recording and adjust in small, equal increments.
Choose precision or coverage
More toe-in generally sharpens the center image and can make instrument positions easier to locate, but it narrows the usable sweet spot. Less toe-in spreads the listening area and can sound more relaxed off-axis, while the center image may become less focused. There is no universal final angle: directivity varies by monitor, room absorption and distance.

|---|---|---|---|
| More inward rotation | Stronger phantom center and sharper placement at the reference seat | Smaller sweet spot; listeners to either side may hear more uneven treble | You listen alone from one fixed chair and want maximum image precision |
| Less inward rotation | Wider usable listening area | Center image can become softer or more dependent on room reflections | Several people listen together or the seat position changes |
Move monitors away from walls, corners and blocked ports
Use boundary distances as starting points, not laws
Walls reinforce low frequencies and create early reflections. HARMAN recommends keeping monitors at least a couple of feet from walls and corners where practical. Teufel gives general guidance of 60–120 cm behind the speakers and 60–90 cm from the side walls, while warning that the correct distance depends on the model and room.
These figures describe starting ranges, not a guarantee of a flat response. If furniture or a small room prevents them, preserve left-right symmetry first, then test the largest practical distance from the nearest boundary.
Protect rear ports
Rear-ported active speakers need particular care. Blocking the port or placing it directly against a wall can alter bass response. Leave the clearance specified by the speaker manufacturer and make the gap equal for both monitors. Do not push one rear port into a corner to make room for a doorway; that asymmetry will change both bass and reflections.

Keep the pair mechanically consistent
- Use stands or shelves that do not wobble and set both speakers to the same height.
- Keep the front edges and tilt angles matched.
- Use isolation pads when a desk or furniture surface transmits vibration, following the pad and monitor instructions.
- Do not place one speaker on a thick pad or riser while the other sits directly on a hard surface.
Control reflections and room modes after geometry
Why reflections move the phantom center
Hard side walls, windows, floors and ceilings return early reflections to the listening seat. If the left and right reflections arrive at different levels or times, the apparent vocal center can shift and the tonal balance can differ between channels. Genelec states that the most accurate stereo imaging is achieved when reflections are similar for both monitors.

Rugs and curtains can reduce floor and window reflections. Broadband absorptive panels at the first side-wall reflection points can help when a room remains lively after placement is corrected.
Understand bass peaks and nulls
Room modes create frequency peaks and cancellations that vary with position. A seat can land in a bass null even when the speakers themselves are capable of producing that frequency. Genelec recommends moving the listening seat forward or backward to avoid a null rather than trying to fix the problem immediately with equalization.
Make physical changes before room-EQ experiments. A USB measurement microphone can help identify modal peaks and nulls after the basic triangle, height and symmetry are established, but measurements cannot repair a speaker hidden in a corner or a severely asymmetric layout.
A repeatable setup procedure
- Clear the reference area. Remove temporary objects that force one monitor closer to a wall or block a rear port. Choose the seat you will actually use.
- Mark the room axis. Use the room’s usable left-right centerline. Place the seat on it and keep the head position consistent during testing.
- Set equal distances. Measure from each monitor’s acoustic center to your ears. Adjust until the two distances match, then set speaker-to-speaker spacing to approximately the same value.
- Set the height. Raise or lower both monitors so the tweeters or specified acoustic axes are at seated ear height. Genelec’s typical reference is 1.2–1.4 m from the floor for the acoustic axis; your seat height may require a different stand height.
- Match the angles. Aim both acoustic axes at the listening position. Confirm that the cabinets are equally rotated and that neither speaker is tilted differently.
- Apply modest toe-in. Start near Teufel’s approximately 15-degree recommendation, then make equal, small rotations. Use a centered vocal to judge whether the phantom image is stable.
- Check boundaries. Move the pair away from corners and close walls as far as the room permits. Use Teufel’s 60–120 cm rear and 60–90 cm side-wall ranges as general starting points, while following the monitor maker’s port-clearance instructions.
- Listen for reflections. Temporarily cover a hard side-wall or window reflection with a thick curtain or blanket. If the image becomes more stable, install an appropriate rug, curtain or broadband panel rather than leaving a temporary covering as a permanent safety hazard.
- Test the seat position. Move the chair a small distance forward and backward while playing familiar material. If bass changes dramatically, choose the position with fewer cancellations and then re-check the triangle.
- Document one change at a time. Klipsch recommends making small, recorded changes and listening after each one. Write down spacing, toe-in and seat position so you can return to the best result.
Compare practical placement options
When a room forces compromises, compare each candidate position against the same criteria rather than choosing by appearance alone.

| Placement option | Center-image stability | Sweet-spot width | Bass behavior | Main risks or requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Symmetric stands, speakers well into the room | Usually strongest because reflections and distances can match | Determined mainly by toe-in and monitor directivity | Often smoother than corner placement, but still room-dependent | Uses floor space; requires secure stands and cable management |
| Desk or console placement | Good if both monitors are centered and equally spaced | Can narrow if the desk reflects strongly | Desktop and nearby walls may add bass or upper-mid reflections | Use equal-height isolation pads; keep rear ports clear |
| Close to the front wall | Can remain stable if left-right distances are identical | Toe-in still controls coverage | Boundary reinforcement may increase bass; exact effect is model-dependent | Respect the manufacturer’s minimum clearance, especially for rear ports |
| One speaker near a corner or side wall | Usually unstable because reflections and loading differ | Often uneven away from the reference seat | Corner reinforcement can make one channel boomy | Use only as a temporary compromise; move the pair or restore symmetry |
| Open-plan or asymmetrical living room | Depends on how closely the two reflection paths can be matched | May require a narrower, carefully aimed sweet spot | Large openings can reduce reinforcement on one side while nearby walls add it on the other | Prioritize the most symmetrical sub-area, then use curtains, rugs or panels to reduce the remaining difference |
Diagnose common imaging problems
The vocal is left or right of center
Check unequal speaker-to-seat distances first, then check whether the seat is off the room axis. Match toe-in and look for a bare wall, window or corner affecting only one side. A level mismatch can also alter the phantom center, so verify that both monitor controls are set identically before moving furniture.
The center is vague even from the main seat
Confirm the equilateral geometry, tweeter height and aiming. Excessive early reflections can smear the image; temporarily reduce the strongest side-wall reflection with a curtain or absorber. If the image improves, treat the reflection rather than continually increasing toe-in.
The image is precise but only in a tiny spot
Reduce toe-in in equal increments. Teufel identifies the basic trade-off: more toe-in sharpens imaging but narrows the sweet spot. Stop when the reference seat remains focused while nearby seats are usable enough for your room.
One side sounds brighter
Look for asymmetric reflections from glass, bare plaster, shelves or furniture. Confirm both acoustic axes are aimed equally and that both tweeters are at the same height. Correct the physical difference before applying equalization.

The result changes when someone moves on the sofa
That is expected when the room has a narrow sweet spot or strong reflections. Reduce toe-in for wider coverage, or keep the critical seat fixed and aim the system for that position. A single setup cannot provide identical imaging at every seat in an asymmetrical room.
Living-room constraints and workable compromises
When furniture fixes the speaker locations
Remove symmetry-breaking objects before buying more equipment: a cabinet that pushes one monitor closer to the wall, a tall reflective surface beside one speaker, or a rear port pointed into upholstery. If the speakers must remain near a wall, keep their distances and angles matched and use the manufacturer’s stated clearance.
When the room is too narrow for a full triangle
Use the largest approximately equilateral triangle that leaves safe walking space. A smaller, symmetric triangle is generally preferable to a wider arrangement with one speaker against a side wall. Recheck ear height and toe-in after every change in listening distance.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When you listen at a desk
Place the seat and monitors on the desk’s centerline, use equal-height isolation pads or stands, and aim the acoustic axes at your seated ears. Keep the desk surface and rear wall as similar as possible on both sides. If the desk is against a wall, preserve rear-port clearance and expect to test several distances.
What to buy only after placement is correct
- Adjustable monitor stands: useful for reaching seated ear height and maintaining a stable, mirrored setup.
- Isolation pads: recommended by HARMAN for monitor placement on desks or other supporting surfaces.
- Broadband acoustic panels: appropriate when early reflections remain after geometry and symmetry are corrected.
- USB measurement microphone: an advanced diagnostic tool for locating modal peaks and nulls after physical placement is established.
Accessories cannot compensate for a seat that is off-axis, unequal speaker distances, a blocked rear port or a monitor in one corner. Solve those physical issues first, then use treatment or measurement to refine the result.
