Sit in your usual working position, check the screen and page from there, and make small changes to the lamp, screen or workstation until you can see the task without a bright reflection or disruptive shadow. There is no single correct lamp height or angle for every desk.
Start from the position where you actually work
Lighting that looks comfortable when you are standing can be distracting once you sit down. Begin with the chair, monitor and keyboard in their normal positions. Turn on the desk lamp and look at the display and work surface exactly as you would during a typical task.

- Sit at your normal distance from the screen. Use the posture and viewing position you maintain for ordinary work rather than leaning forward to inspect the setup.
- Identify the task area. Decide whether the lamp is mainly lighting paper, a notebook, a keyboard or another nearby surface.
- Aim the beam at that area. Move the lamp head or arm so the useful light reaches the task without placing the brightest source in your field of view.
- Check the monitor from the same seat. If the lamp appears in the display as a bright patch or streak, change the lamp’s position or direction before changing anything else.
- Look at the page and keyboard. A concentrated pool of light can create a hard shadow from your hand or make you alternate between very bright and dim areas. If that happens, adjust the lamp again.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) states the basic rule directly: “Position task lighting (for example, a desk lamp) so the light does not reflect on the screen.” That instruction is more useful than memorising a universal angle because desks, lamps, monitors and windows differ.

Aim light at the task, not at the display
For reading and writing
Use the lamp as supplemental task lighting. The goal is enough illumination on the page to read and write comfortably without adding a bright source that competes with the monitor. Direct the beam toward the paper or book, then view the page from your normal seated position.

- BULB REPLACED: This desk lamp without the bulb, it fits both E26 and E27 bases for proper installation. We highly recommend an A19 bulb and G25 bulb is also compatible as an alternative. Please note that other bulb models are not recommended. Using non-specified bulbs may result in suboptimal lighting effects, unstable performance, or a poor user experience
If the lamp is behind the page and the page looks evenly lit, leave it there only if the monitor remains free of reflections. If the screen shows a reflected bulb or shade, move the lamp sideways or farther from the display and recheck both surfaces. The best position is the one that serves the page without creating a new screen problem.
For keyboard and desk work
Aiming the beam at the keyboard or a small writing area can help when the surrounding room is not bright enough. Keep the luminous source itself outside the direct viewing field. A shade or glare shield can help direct light toward the work area, but it is not a guarantee that reflections will disappear; the final check must be made at the screen.
For mostly screen-based work
Use the lamp sparingly. If the monitor is the main task, the lamp should provide only the additional light needed for nearby paper or controls. A bright spot next to or behind the screen can force your eyes to adapt between areas and can make the display harder to see.
Orient the screen and lamp together
Keep the screen at right angles to windows and major light sources
OSHA recommends placing the screen at right angles to windows and other light sources to reduce reflections. In practice, avoid pointing the monitor directly toward a window or placing it directly opposite one when that arrangement sends daylight into the display.
Side daylight is usually easier to manage than light arriving straight at the screen. If a window produces a changing reflection, use the room’s shading so disturbing daylight can be screened off while you work. Arbetsmiljöverket also identifies local lighting, such as a desk lamp, as a way to add light when an employee feels there is not enough illumination.

Check the lamp after changing the monitor angle
Tilting or rotating the monitor changes the angle at which it reflects the lamp. After any screen adjustment, look again from the chair. A position that removed a window reflection can expose the lamp, and a screen angle that hides the lamp can send daylight back onto the display.
Separate the source from the reflection
Do not judge glare only by looking at the bulb. A lamp can be outside your direct view and still appear in the monitor. Conversely, the bulb may be visible beside the display without reflecting on it. Check both conditions: discomfort from a direct bright source and a bright image or patch on the screen.

Recognise a hand or arm shadow
Write a few lines or use the keyboard while watching the page. If your hand, arm or monitor stand blocks the beam, the shadow will move as you work. Reposition the lamp to the side that leaves your working hand less likely to interrupt the light, then check the page again.
Watch for a sharp pool of light
WorkSafe Victoria cautions that a task lamp can create pools of light that make the eyes adapt between areas. A small, intense pool may therefore be uncomfortable even when the page itself is bright enough. Move the lamp farther away, redirect it across the task rather than straight down, or reduce the contrast between the lit area and its surroundings by using the room’s available light.
Use posture as a warning signal
Shadows, glare or reflections that make you lean, twist or crane your neck indicate that the arrangement needs attention. Correct the light or screen rather than adopting a strained posture to avoid the problem. Recheck the setup while seated normally; a solution that works only when you lean to one side is not a practical solution.

Make changes in small steps
The correct position depends on the lamp, desk, monitor, windows and task. Change one factor at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped.

- Move the lamp laterally. Shift it a small distance to the left or right, then inspect the screen and page.
- Change the beam direction. Turn or tilt the lamp head toward the task surface while keeping the source out of your viewing field.
- Change the lamp’s distance. A farther position can spread the light over a larger area; a nearer position can concentrate it. Recheck for a harsh pool or new shadow after either change.
- Adjust the screen angle or workstation orientation. If the lamp cannot be moved without losing useful task light, rotate or reposition the display so the beam no longer reflects into it.
- Manage daylight. Use available window shading when changing daylight creates a reflection that the lamp adjustment cannot solve.
- Repeat the seated check. Evaluate visual comfort, contrast and the brightest area from the normal working position, not from the side of the desk.
Because no reviewed workplace guidance establishes one universal lamp height or angle, treat measurements advertised for a different desk as starting points rather than rules.
Match the adjustment to the symptom
| What you notice | Likely lighting problem | First change to try |
|---|---|---|
| A bright patch or image appears on the monitor | Reflected lamp or window light | Move or re-aim the lamp; then check the screen from the seated position. If daylight is responsible, use window shading or change the screen orientation. |
| The bulb or another bright source is uncomfortable to look toward | Direct glare in the viewing field | Turn the lamp away from the line of sight or place its shade between your eyes and the source while keeping the task lit. |
| Your hand or arm darkens the page | Task-light shadow | Move the lamp to the opposite side or redirect the beam across the page. |
| The page is bright but the surrounding desk is much darker | Concentrated pool of light | Move the lamp farther away or spread the beam, then reassess visual comfort. |
| You lean or twist to see comfortably | Glare, shadow or reflection is driving poor posture | Correct the lamp, screen angle or workstation orientation while sitting normally. |
Use different setups for different tasks
| Primary task | Lighting objective | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Reading or handwriting beside a monitor | Light the paper without sending the lamp’s reflection into the display | The page is readable, your hand does not cast a disruptive shadow, and the screen has no bright reflection. |
| Keyboard or small desk task | Provide supplemental light only where the hands need it | The beam does not sit in your direct view and does not create a harsh pool around the keyboard. |
| Mostly screen work | Keep additional light modest and away from the display’s reflective path | The monitor remains easy to see and the lamp does not become the brightest distracting object. |
| Work near a window | Use side daylight where possible and control changing brightness | The screen is not facing the window or receiving a changing reflection; shading is available when needed. |
Understand the three kinds of glare and shadow
Direct glare
Direct glare occurs when your eyes see the bright lamp source itself. It can be uncomfortable even if the monitor is reflection-free. Lowering the source out of the viewing field, turning the lamp head, or using a shade addresses the source you can see directly.
Reflected glare
Reflected glare appears when the lamp or a window is mirrored by the display. It reduces the distinction between screen content and the reflected bright area, making the image harder to see and potentially contributing to eyestrain or fatigue. The practical remedy is geometric: change the lamp, screen or workstation orientation until the reflection is gone.
Task shadows
Shadows fall across paper or controls when an object blocks the beam. They are a task-surface problem rather than a monitor-reflection problem, so moving the light to another side of the work area is often more effective than changing the screen.

When a glare filter is appropriate
Adjust the lamp, screen and workstation first. If a persistent screen reflection remains after those changes, OSHA lists a monitor glare filter as one possible measure. A filter should not significantly decrease screen visibility; a darker or hazier display is not a successful fix.
Use a filter as a fallback for a reflection that cannot be removed by repositioning. It does not correct a lamp that shines directly into your eyes, and it does not remove a hand shadow on paper. After installing one, inspect fine screen content from your normal seat and confirm that visibility has been preserved.
Practical placement examples
Paper to the side of a monitor
Place the lamp so its beam reaches the paper from the side, then sit back and inspect the monitor. If the page is comfortable but a bright reflection appears on the display, move the lamp farther sideways or redirect the head across the paper. Check that your writing hand does not block the beam.
Monitor beside a bright window
Start by orienting the screen so the window is not directly in front of or behind it. Use the lamp for the nearby page or keyboard, not as a competing bright source beside the display. When daylight changes, use the available window shading and repeat the seated check.
Small desk with limited lamp movement
If the lamp arm cannot move far enough, change the screen angle or the workstation orientation in small increments. Keep the lamp aimed at the task and verify that the new screen position does not introduce a window reflection. If no arrangement removes the reflection, consider a glare filter that preserves visibility.

Visible bulb with no screen reflection
A visible bulb is not automatically a screen problem, but it can still be direct glare. If your eyes feel drawn to the source, rotate the lamp, lower it outside the viewing field or use a shade, then confirm that the page remains adequately lit.
A quick troubleshooting sequence
Use this sequence whenever glare or shadows return after moving equipment:
- Return to the normal seated position.
- Identify whether the problem is direct glare, a screen reflection, a paper shadow or an overly concentrated pool of light.
- Move or re-aim the lamp while keeping the task illuminated.
- Inspect the display for reflected light from the lamp and from windows.
- Inspect the page or keyboard while moving your hands through the real task.
- Change the screen angle or workstation orientation if lamp movement cannot solve the reflection.
- Use window shading when daylight is the changing source.
- Consider a glare filter only when repositioning has failed, and reject any filter that significantly reduces screen visibility.
What cannot be reduced to one measurement
Advice that promises one exact lamp height, distance or angle for every desk overstates what the available workplace guidance establishes. The useful position changes with the lamp’s design, the desk depth, monitor size and angle, window placement, the task surface and the user’s seated position.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsJudge the arrangement by outcomes: the task is visible, the monitor is free of distracting reflections, the lamp is not a direct bright source in your view, shadows do not obstruct the work, and you do not need to lean or twist. Recheck whenever you move the monitor, add a second screen, change the desk layout or alter window shading.
Why correct placement matters
Direct or reflected bright light can make a display harder to see and contribute to eyestrain or fatigue. Poorly placed task lighting can also create shadows and concentrated pools that encourage awkward posture or repeated eye adaptation. Correct placement is therefore not about making the desk look symmetrical; it is about preserving clear screen contrast and an unobstructed task surface from the position in which the work is performed.
The most reliable method is iterative: light the task, inspect the screen, test the page while moving your hands, and make one small change at a time. Stop when the lamp supports the work without becoming the visual problem.
