How to Port an Indian Health Insurance Policy Without Losing Waiting-Period Credits

Yes, you can port an Indian health-insurance policy without starting every waiting period from zero—but only if you move at renewal, apply in the permitted window, keep cover continuous and obtain the incoming insurer’s written credit decision. IRDAI guidance permits portability for individual, family-floater and group health policies. The application goes to the insurer you want to join, normally 30 to 60 days before the existing policy’s renewal due date. Portability can carry eligible continuity credits such as accrued sum insured, no-claim bonus, specific waiting periods, pre-existing-disease waiting periods and the moratorium period, subject to the applicable rules and the extent accepted by the new insurer.

Those credits do not freeze the rest of the contract. The new insurer decides the premium and other policy terms, so compare the complete wording rather than treating portability as an automatic upgrade. The safest approach is to keep the old policy active, disclose every relevant medical fact consistently, obtain member-by-member confirmation of accepted credits and cancel or change the old cover only after you have a clear effective date for the replacement.

The rule in one view

Question What the official guidance establishes What you should do
When can I port? At renewal of an individual, family-floater or group health policy. Start early and submit to the acquiring insurer within its stated portability window.
What is the regulatory window? IRDAI’s guidance says the application should be made at least 30 days before renewal, but not earlier than 60 days before the renewal due date. Count backward from the due date and verify the insurer’s current submission instructions.
Who receives the application? The insurer you want to join (the acquiring insurer). Request its forms, document requirements and acknowledgement directly.
What can carry over? Eligible credits can include sum insured, no-claim bonus, specific waiting periods, pre-existing-disease waiting periods and the moratorium period, subject to applicable rules and extent. Ask for a written, person-by-person statement of every credit accepted and its amount or scope.
What does not automatically carry over? Terms other than waiting-period credit—including premium—remain at the acquiring insurer’s discretion. Read exclusions, limits, co-payments, room rules, network and claims wording as a new contract.

IRDAI’s Health Department material is the regulator’s reference point for the timing and transferable-credit framework: IRDAI Health Department. The policyholder guidance also explains that the incoming insurer controls terms other than the applicable continuity credit: Policyholder.gov.in portability guidance.

What “waiting-period credit” actually means

A waiting period is a period during which a policy does not yet cover a stated condition, treatment or category of expense. When a policy is ported, the time you have already completed under the old policy can be recognized by the new insurer to the extent permitted by the rules and accepted in underwriting. You are transferring continuity, not receiving a promise that every feature of the new policy is immediately claimable.

Credits identified in IRDAI guidance

  • Sum insured: The existing insured amount and related accumulated entitlement may be considered under the portability rules. Ask how the old limit maps to the new policy’s structure and what amount the insurer has actually accepted.
  • No-claim bonus: An earned bonus may form part of the credit assessment. Have the insurer state whether it is recognized as additional cover, a revised limit or another benefit under the new wording.
  • Specific waiting periods: Completed time against named treatments or conditions can be considered, subject to the incoming insurer’s written decision.
  • Pre-existing-disease waiting periods: The time already served for a disclosed pre-existing condition is a central reason people port. The new insurer must identify which condition, member and credit period it has recognized.
  • Moratorium period: The accrued moratorium period is listed among the credits that may transfer, subject to the applicable rules and extent.

Because the credit is condition- and member-specific, do not rely on a sales conversation or a general statement that “waiting periods carry over.” A family floater can have different medical histories and completed waiting periods for each insured person. Request the final written schedule or endorsement showing who receives which credit and from what effective date.

What portability does not promise

Portability does not guarantee the same premium, coverage limits, exclusions, room eligibility, co-payment, sub-limit, hospital network, claims procedure or underwriting outcome. The acquiring insurer may offer a different product and can set terms other than the eligible waiting-period credit at its discretion. A lower premium can therefore come with narrower benefits, while a broader policy can cost more or impose different restrictions. Treat the credit as one decision factor, not as approval of the whole replacement policy.

Who can port and when

Eligible policy arrangements

IRDAI’s health-insurance guidance allows portability at renewal for individual policies, family-floater policies and group health policies. The practical route and documents can differ, especially when a group scheme is involved, so ask the acquiring insurer how it will record each covered member and the relevant prior policy history.

The 60-to-30-day application window

Use the renewal due date printed on your current schedule as the anchor. The IRDAI window opens no earlier than 60 days before that date and closes at least 30 days before it. “At least 30 days before” means an application made too close to renewal may fall outside the stated window; “not earlier than 60 days” means an application filed months in advance is not the ordinary portability application described by the guidance. The insurer may provide a more specific operational deadline or channel, so confirm the exact date and method in writing.

Portability is a renewal event, not a mid-term cancellation-and-switch facility. If you are dissatisfied in the middle of the policy year, use that time to compare products and assemble records, then apply when the renewal window arrives.

Step-by-step: port without creating a coverage break

  1. Mark the renewal date. Check the policy schedule, renewal notice and any endorsement for the actual due date. Put reminders at 60 days and 30 days before it. If documents show different dates, ask the current insurer to confirm the operative renewal date in writing.
  2. Shortlist the replacement policy before applying. Read the full prospectus and policy wording, not just the benefit summary. Check the insured amount, restoration or refill wording, disease and treatment exclusions, room category, co-payments, sub-limits, network hospitals, claims intimation rules and the treatment of family members.
  3. Contact the acquiring insurer. Ask for its current portability form, submission channel, required declarations and deadline. The applicant submits the request to the insurer they want to join; do not assume the old insurer will make the application for you.
  4. Assemble the existing-policy record. Keep the current policy schedule, every renewal schedule, endorsements, continuity letters, claim history and evidence of no-claim bonus. Include records for every person covered, not just the policyholder. The exact current checklist is insurer-specific, so use the acquiring insurer’s list rather than an internet checklist.
  5. Complete health disclosures accurately. Report diagnosed conditions, investigations, procedures, medicines, hospitalizations and other information requested by the form. Use consistent dates and descriptions across the application and prior policy records. Omissions or contradictions can create a dispute at claim time even when a waiting-period credit was accepted.
  6. Submit inside the permitted window and retain proof. Upload or deliver the forms through the channel the acquiring insurer specifies. Save the acknowledgement, submission timestamp, reference number, uploaded files and every email or letter. If the portal rejects a file, ask for an alternative channel before the deadline rather than silently assuming submission succeeded.
  7. Keep the existing policy active during assessment. Pay the renewal premium or follow the current insurer’s renewal instructions so the old cover does not lapse while the portability request is being considered. Submitting a port request is not itself proof that the replacement policy is active.
  8. Ask for the written credit decision. Require a member-by-member statement identifying the accepted sum-insured or bonus credit, each specific waiting-period credit, pre-existing-condition credit, moratorium credit and the effective date. Ask the insurer to identify any portion it has not accepted and the reason stated in its decision.
  9. Verify the final contract before changing the old cover. Compare the issued schedule and wording with the quotation and the written credit decision. Check names, dates of birth, insured amounts, start date, covered conditions, exclusions, co-payments, room rules and all dependants. Do not cancel the existing policy solely because an application was filed.
  10. Coordinate the effective dates. Once acceptance and continuity are clear, follow the acquiring insurer’s instructions for the old policy and any refund or cancellation mechanics. Keep copies of both policies and the acceptance letter. The objective is uninterrupted protection, not merely a successful application number.

Build a member-by-member continuity file

A floater policy can conceal important differences: one person may have completed a disease-specific waiting period while another has not; one may have a no-claim bonus while another has a separate history. Create a simple record before requesting portability and ask the new insurer to complete the final column.

Record for each insured person Why it matters Written confirmation to request
Name, date of birth and relationship Prevents a credit from being attached to the wrong family member. Exact member name or identifier on the new schedule.
Original policy start date and uninterrupted renewal dates Shows how long cover has been maintained. Continuity date recognized by the acquiring insurer.
Conditions disclosed as pre-existing Links medical history to the relevant waiting-period credit. Condition covered, credit recognized and any remaining period.
Specific treatments or conditions with completed waiting periods Specific waiting rules may differ from the general waiting rule. Each accepted treatment or condition and its status.
Current sum insured and no-claim bonus Determines what accumulated cover is being evaluated. Accepted amount, form of benefit and any unaccepted portion.
Claims and endorsements Explains changes to cover and the policy history supplied to underwriting. Confirmation that the insurer considered the submitted records.
Current policy renewal due date Controls the portability window and continuity date. Replacement policy start date and relationship to renewal.

Keep the file factual. If a record is unavailable, ask the current insurer for a policy-history or continuity statement and tell the acquiring insurer what is missing. Do not fill gaps with assumptions about how many months of a waiting period have elapsed.

Compare the new policy on six separate axes

Portability rules establish a route for continuity credits; they do not tell you which product is best. Compare the following items side by side and record the answer in the issued wording, not only in a quotation.

Comparison axis Questions to ask Why it can change the decision
Waiting-period credit Which member, condition and specific waiting period is recognized? Is any period still outstanding? A broad “credit accepted” statement may hide a condition or person that was excluded from the decision.
Sum insured and bonus What old limit and bonus are accepted? How are they represented under the new policy? Different products may express accumulated cover differently; the number alone may not describe usable protection.
Premium and underwriting What is the final premium, tax treatment and underwriting decision for the whole family? The acquiring insurer controls these terms; portability does not lock the old price.
Exclusions and sub-limits Are there disease exclusions, procedure caps, waiting clauses or category limits? A lower headline price can be offset by narrower claim eligibility.
Co-payment and room eligibility What percentage or fixed amount is payable by you, and which room category is covered? These clauses can materially affect an otherwise covered hospitalization.
Provider network and claims process Are preferred hospitals in network? How are cashless and reimbursement claims initiated? Operational access matters when treatment is urgent.
Effective dates When does the new contract begin, and is there any interval between policies? A gap can leave a claim outside both policies and can disrupt continuity evidence.

Ask for all material answers in writing. If a representative says a benefit is “same as the old policy,” request the clause number or the issued schedule that shows it. The policyholder guidance makes clear that terms other than the applicable waiting-period credit, including premium, are at the acquiring insurer’s discretion.

Portability versus migration

These terms are often confused but describe different destinations.

Feature Portability Migration
Destination Another insurer. Another policy with the same insurer.
Primary purpose Change insurer while seeking recognition of eligible continuity credits. Change products within the existing insurer while carrying relevant credits under the migration rules.
Timing At renewal under the health-insurance portability guidance. Follow the same insurer’s migration process and the applicable regulatory guidance.
Family or group context Can involve covered family members and group-policy situations, subject to the relevant cover and process. Can also involve family members under the relevant cover.
Who decides the new terms? The acquiring insurer sets terms other than the applicable continuity credit. The same insurer applies the terms of the selected policy under its migration rules.

If you are broadly satisfied with claims service but need a different product, ask about migration. If you want a different insurer, use portability. Do not submit a migration request believing it transfers you to a competitor, or a portability request believing the old insurer must preserve every contractual feature.

How to avoid a coverage gap

Before submitting

  • Check that the current policy is active and all covered members are listed correctly.
  • Record the renewal due date and the date on which the regulatory application window opens.
  • Download or request the latest schedule, renewal history, endorsements and claims records.
  • List every known condition and treatment consistently with prior disclosures.
  • Ask the acquiring insurer how it wants medical reports and identity documents supplied.

While the request is being assessed

  • Pay the existing policy’s renewal amount when due unless the current insurer gives you a different written instruction.
  • Monitor the acquiring insurer’s reference number and respond promptly to requests for clarification.
  • Keep evidence of every submission and conversation.
  • Do not assume silence means acceptance, and do not represent an unissued policy as active to a hospital.

After a decision

  • Read the issued policy and credit schedule line by line.
  • Check the start date against the old policy’s end or renewal date.
  • Confirm every family member, insured amount and accepted waiting-period credit.
  • Ask how to correct an error before surrendering or cancelling the old cover.
  • Store the acceptance letter, old policy history and new schedule together for future claims.

What to do if a credit is missing or the application is not accepted

First separate three issues: a missing document, a credit the insurer says it cannot verify, and a commercial or underwriting decision about the new policy. Ask the acquiring insurer for a written explanation identifying the member, condition, period and document on which it relied. Compare that explanation with the old policy schedule and renewal record. If the issue is a factual error, submit the relevant record through the insurer’s stated grievance channel and retain the acknowledgement.

Do not quietly allow the old policy to lapse while disputing the replacement. Until you have a confirmed effective date and understand the decision, continuous existing cover is the safer position. If the new terms are unacceptable, you can decide at renewal whether to remain with the current insurer, investigate migration within it or pursue another compliant portability application in a later renewal cycle. No official figure establishes a universal approval rate or processing time, so treat each insurer’s written timeline and decision as case-specific.

Common mistakes that cost people continuity

Applying outside the renewal window

Applying months before renewal or waiting until the last few days can put the request outside the stated regulatory timing. Use the renewal date printed on the policy and verify the insurer’s operational deadline.

Assuming a floater has one shared medical history

Credits attach to people and conditions, not merely to the policy number. Require separate confirmation for each insured member.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disclosing only the condition for which credit is wanted

Portability forms are underwriting documents. Incomplete medical disclosure can create a later claim dispute and can undermine the continuity assessment.

Comparing only premium

Premium is discretionary under the incoming policy. A cheaper offer may have different limits, exclusions, co-payments, room rules or network access.

Cancelling the old policy when the form is submitted

An application acknowledgement is not an issued policy. Keep the existing cover active until acceptance and the effective date are clear.

Treating a verbal promise as the policy

Ask for the recognized credit and all material exceptions in writing. The issued wording controls a claim, not an informal assurance.

Questions worth asking the acquiring insurer

  • What is your exact portability submission deadline for my renewal date?
  • Which documents do you require for each insured member, and how will you acknowledge receipt?
  • For each pre-existing condition, what waiting period have you recognized and what remains?
  • Which specific waiting periods have been credited, and are any conditions or treatments excluded from that credit?
  • How have the old sum insured and no-claim bonus been mapped to the proposed policy?
  • What premium and underwriting terms apply after reviewing the complete medical and policy history?
  • What are the new policy’s exclusions, sub-limits, co-payments, room restrictions and network arrangements?
  • What is the exact continuity effective date, and what should I do with the old policy after acceptance?

Bottom line

To preserve waiting-period credits, treat portability as a carefully timed renewal transfer: apply to the acquiring insurer between 60 and 30 days before renewal, keep the existing policy active, disclose medical history fully, and obtain written member-by-member confirmation of recognized credits and the start date. The continuity benefit can include accumulated sum insured, no-claim bonus, specific and pre-existing-disease waiting periods and the moratorium period, but the new insurer still controls premium and other policy terms. Compare the entire contract and never create a gap on the strength of an unconfirmed application.
