To point a GoDaddy domain at a VPS with custom nameservers, move the domain’s DNS authority to the DNS provider that supplied those nameservers, recreate the domain’s records there, and then replace GoDaddy’s nameservers with the provider’s hostnames. The website’s A records for @ and www must contain the VPS public IPv4 address at the new DNS host. If you are not moving DNS to another provider, do not change nameservers: keep GoDaddy’s defaults and edit the A records in GoDaddy DNS instead.

Decide whether you actually need custom nameservers
Nameservers tell the internet which DNS service is authoritative for a domain. Changing them does not, by itself, point a website to a VPS. It changes the control panel where every DNS record is managed.

For a basic VPS website, the default-nameserver route is lower risk because it changes only the website records. Custom nameservers are a DNS migration: mail, verification, subdomains and other services all depend on the records at the new host. Choose this route only when DNS really belongs elsewhere.
What you need before starting
- Access to the GoDaddy account that manages the domain.
- The VPS public IPv4 address. Use the address assigned to the VPS, not a private address from its internal network.
- The exact nameserver hostnames supplied by the new DNS provider, normally two or more hostnames.
- Administrative access to the new DNS provider so you can create the domain’s zone.
- A copy of every current DNS record, especially
MX,TXTandCNAMErecords.
Record the current values before changing anything. The website may use an MX record for email, TXT records for SPF, DKIM or domain verification, and CNAME records for services such as a mail or application subdomain. Nameserver changes can disrupt those services if the records are not recreated at the new DNS host.

Also identify whether the domain currently uses GoDaddy’s default nameservers or another provider. In GoDaddy’s domain settings, open the DNS area and inspect the Nameservers section. If the displayed nameservers already belong to an external provider, make the record changes there rather than in GoDaddy’s DNS editor.
Build the DNS zone at the new provider first
Do not switch nameservers until the destination DNS zone is ready. A nameserver change makes the new host authoritative; an empty or incomplete zone can make the site and email disappear for users whose resolvers have updated.
Create or activate the zone
- Sign in to the external DNS provider.
- Add the exact domain name as a DNS zone, without changing its spelling or top-level domain.
- Confirm that the provider has assigned the nameserver hostnames you will enter at GoDaddy.
- Use the provider’s record-import feature if it offers one, then review every imported value manually.
Recreate the website records
Add an A record for the root host, usually shown as @, and set its value to the VPS public IPv4 address. Add the corresponding www record and point it to the VPS as well. Some DNS panels represent www as a full hostname; others accept only the label. Follow the panel’s displayed format, but make sure the resulting name is the domain’s www host rather than www.www.
If your provider supports a CNAME from www to the root domain, that is an alternative design, but this direct VPS procedure uses an A record for both @ and www. Do not create two competing records for the same name.

Copy service records, not just web records
- MX: preserves delivery to your existing mail service.
- TXT: preserves SPF, DKIM, DMARC and ownership-verification data where those records are in use.
- CNAME: preserves hosted services and subdomains that rely on aliases.
- Other records: copy any additional records shown in the old zone unless you know they are obsolete.
Compare the old and new zones line by line. A successful website test does not prove that email or a third-party verification record survived the migration.
Remove conflicts in the destination zone
Delete or replace parking records and other conflicting A records at the active DNS host. A leftover parking address can send some visitors to a holding page while others reach the VPS, depending on cached answers and resolver behavior. Keep only the intended value for each hostname.
Change GoDaddy to the custom nameservers
The wording can vary by GoDaddy regional site and account interface, but the sequence is the same. A UAE-region help interface, for example, labels the option “I’ll use my own nameservers” and asks you to save and then continue.
- Sign in to GoDaddy.
- Open your domain list and select the domain you want to move.
- Open the domain’s settings, then choose DNS.
- Open the Nameservers tab or nameserver editor.
- Choose I’ll use my own nameservers (or the equivalent option shown in your region).
- Enter each nameserver hostname exactly as provided by the external DNS host. Do not substitute an IP address unless the provider explicitly asks for one.
- Click Save, then click Continue if a confirmation screen appears.
- Complete any account security check and confirm that the new hostnames are displayed as the domain’s active nameservers.
Do not delete the DNS zone at GoDaddy before the change is accepted. It is useful as a reference while checking that the new provider contains every required record. Once the delegation has changed and the new zone is verified, the GoDaddy record editor is no longer authoritative for the domain.

Wait for delegation and verify the result
DNS updates are not instantaneous. GoDaddy’s help information says most changes take effect within about an hour, while complete global updates can take up to 48 hours. During that window, different networks may still use cached nameserver or record data.
Check the authoritative nameservers
- Use a public DNS lookup service such as Google Public DNS to query the domain’s
NSrecords. - Confirm that the result lists the new provider’s nameservers rather than GoDaddy’s defaults.
- Repeat the check from a different network or resolver if results appear inconsistent.
Check the website records
- Query the root domain’s
Arecord and confirm that it returns the VPS public IPv4 address. - Query
wwwseparately and confirm that it resolves to the intended VPS address or the deliberate alias you configured. - Check the domain in a browser after the lookup shows the new address. A browser may still use an older cached result, so test from a private window or another connection.
Check email and verification records
Query the domain’s MX and important TXT records as well. If they are missing at the new provider, website resolution can succeed while mail delivery, SPF/DKIM checks or an ownership verification fails. Correct the records at the new DNS host; editing GoDaddy’s old zone will not fix an already delegated domain.

DNS only directs traffic. The VPS must be configured to serve the requested hostname. Configure your web server, such as Nginx or Apache, with a virtual host whose server name matches the root domain and any hostname you intend to serve, commonly both the bare domain and www. Point the virtual host’s document root at the application or site files, reload the web server, and ensure the VPS firewall allows the web ports your server uses.
If the server responds to the VPS IP but shows a default page, the DNS may already be correct; the remaining problem is usually the virtual-host configuration. If the browser reports that the hostname cannot be found, continue checking nameserver delegation and the A records instead.

When keeping GoDaddy’s default nameservers is better
You do not need custom nameservers merely because the website is hosted on a VPS. The simpler path is:
- Sign in to GoDaddy and open the domain’s DNS management page.
- Confirm that the domain uses GoDaddy’s default nameservers.
- Edit the
Arecord for@and set it to the VPS public IPv4 address. - Edit or create the
wwwrecord so it reaches the VPS, using the record type your design requires. - Remove conflicting parking or duplicate
Arecords. - Wait for propagation and verify the records with a public DNS lookup.
This approach leaves mail and other records in the same zone and avoids a delegation migration. Choose custom nameservers only when the external DNS service provides a capability or operational arrangement you actually need.
Common failure modes and fixes
The domain still shows a parking page
Look for a parking A record or another old address in the zone that is currently authoritative. Remove the conflict at the active DNS provider, then wait for cached answers to expire. Checking only the GoDaddy editor can mislead you if the domain has already moved to external nameservers.
The site works, but email stopped
The new zone is probably missing an MX record or a related mail TXT record. Compare the old and new record copies and recreate the missing entries at the external DNS host. Do not change mail records at GoDaddy after delegation unless GoDaddy is still authoritative.
Some networks reach the VPS and others do not
This is common during propagation. Confirm that the new nameservers are correct and that the new zone contains the intended A records. GoDaddy indicates that full worldwide updates can take up to 48 hours; avoid repeatedly switching nameservers while caches are converging.

The new provider reports a missing or invalid zone
Make sure the zone name exactly matches the registered domain and that the provider’s nameserver hostnames were copied character for character. A typo in one hostname can prevent delegation from completing even when the A record is correct.
The domain resolves to the VPS, but the wrong website loads
Check the web server’s virtual-host or server-block names. The configuration must match the hostname sent by the browser, not merely the VPS address. Also verify that both the root domain and www are covered if you created records for both.
HTTPS shows a certificate warning
First verify that DNS consistently reaches the VPS and that the web server serves the intended site for the hostname. A certificate issued for a different hostname will not become valid simply because the A record changed. Complete the certificate setup on the VPS after the domain resolves reliably.
Operational checklist
- Decide whether the requirement is a record edit or a full DNS move.
- Write down all existing records, with special attention to
MX,TXTandCNAME. - Create and populate the external DNS zone before changing delegation.
- Set
@andwwwto the VPS public IPv4 address, unless your chosen alias design intentionally differs. - Remove parking and duplicate records in the zone that will be authoritative.
- Enter the provider’s nameserver hostnames in GoDaddy’s Nameservers tab and complete Save and Continue.
- Allow up to 48 hours for global convergence, even though many users update within about an hour.
- Verify
NS,A,MXand importantTXTrecords from public resolvers. - Configure the VPS web server to recognize the domain and its required hostnames.
Final decision
Use custom nameservers when you are deliberately moving DNS authority to another service. Prepare the complete zone first, switch GoDaddy’s nameservers, and manage all subsequent records at the new host. If the only goal is to send a GoDaddy domain to one VPS, keep GoDaddy’s default nameservers and change the website’s A records; that avoids an unnecessary DNS migration.
