On PC, use GTAV’s built-in Self Radio station: place non-DRM MP3, WMA, or M4A files in DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VUser Music, scan the folder under Pause Menu > Settings > Audio, then select Self Radio from the radio wheel. PS4 and PS5 use console music features such as Spotify; PS5 can also play supported files from a USB drive. Self Radio is not the documented method on consoles, and current Xbox-specific steps are not established here.
Choose the method for your platform
The answer depends on where you play GTA 5. The PC version has a custom station integrated into the game. PlayStation consoles play music through their system-level audio controls instead, so your tracks do not appear as a new station on the in-game radio wheel.

How Self Radio works on GTA 5 for PC
Self Radio is Rockstar’s documented way to play your own music files in both GTAV and GTA Online on Windows PC. The game reads audio files from a designated User Music folder, indexes them when you scan, and makes the resulting collection available through the normal radio controls. It behaves like a station rather than replacing the soundtrack files that ship with the game.

Rockstar Support’s current instructions, marked last updated April 30, 2024, list non-DRM MP3, WMA, and M4A files. You may copy individual files into User Music or create shortcuts there that point to folders elsewhere on your computer. A shortcut is useful when your library is already organized in another location and you do not want duplicate files.

Self Radio requirements checklist
- You need the Windows PC edition of GTAV or GTA Online; the User Music workflow is not the documented console method.
- Use local, non-DRM audio with an
.mp3,.wma, or.m4aextension. - The files or Windows shortcuts must be inside the User Music folder that the game reads.
- Run a Quick Scan or Full Scan after adding or moving music.
- Keep a shortcut’s destination available whenever you play. A shortcut points to another location; it does not copy the audio into the game.
There is no separate Self Radio purchase or subscription described in Rockstar’s setup instructions. The relevant requirement is having compatible files and placing them where the game can scan them.
Set up Self Radio on Windows
1. Locate the User Music folder
- Open Windows Documents.
- Open Rockstar Games.
- Open GTA V.
- Open User Music.
The usual location is DocumentsRockstar GamesGTA VUser Music. The exact Documents location can differ if Windows has redirected your personal folders, for example to another drive or a cloud-synced Documents directory. Use the Documents folder that your Windows account and game installation actually use; do not create a second, similarly named folder in a different location unless the game is configured to read it.
2. Add compatible audio files
Copy your music into User Music, keeping the original file extensions. The supported types identified by Rockstar are:
Recommended Free Tools
- MP3
- WMA
- M4A
Files must be non-DRM. A track protected by digital-rights management may be present in the folder but remain unreadable to the game. A normal file extension alone does not remove DRM or guarantee that the audio codec inside the container is supported.
Instead of copying files, you can place Windows shortcuts in User Music that point to folders containing your music. This keeps a single master library in its existing location. Make sure the target folder remains available whenever you launch the game; a disconnected drive or unavailable network location will leave those tracks inaccessible.
3. Start the game and scan the folder
- Launch GTAV or GTA Online.
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Audio.
- Choose Perform Quick Scan for Music or Perform Full Scan for Music.
A Quick Scan is normally the first choice after adding a few files. A Full Scan is the useful recovery step when tracks remain missing after a quick scan, when you have reorganized many folders, or when the library has not been indexed correctly.
Rockstar also provides an Auto-scan setting. When enabled, the game can perform a Quick Scan at startup. Auto-scan is convenient for a library that changes often, but running an explicit scan gives you a definite point at which to verify that new files were detected.
4. Select Self Radio
Once the scan completes, open the in-game radio wheel using your normal radio-control button or key and select Self Radio. The station becomes available alongside the game’s regular radio stations. You can change stations during gameplay using the same controls you use for every other station.

Choose a Self Radio playback mode
Self Radio has three modes in Settings > Audio. Select the mode that matches how much control you want during a drive.
| Mode | Track order | Skipping tracks | Extra station behavior | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sequential | Folder order | Allowed | No randomization or DJ-style presentation | Albums, playlists, or a deliberate running order |
| Shuffle | Random | Allowed | No in-game adverts or DJ banter | A varied personal library with manual skipping |
| Radio | Random | Not allowed | Includes in-game adverts and DJ banter | The closest feel to a conventional GTA radio station |
In Radio mode, the inability to skip is intentional. If you need to move past a track immediately, use Sequential or Shuffle instead. Sequential follows folder order, so changing names or moving files can change the order the game presents them.
Organize files so Self Radio is easier to manage
Use a dedicated library
A separate folder for game playback makes it easier to identify unsupported files and troubleshoot missing tracks. You can keep the files directly in User Music or place them in subfolders and use shortcuts, depending on how you want the station organized.
Copy files or use shortcuts?
Copying puts another set of files in User Music and keeps playback independent of the original library’s location. Shortcuts avoid duplicate storage and let you maintain one music collection, but every target folder must remain reachable. A shortcut to a disconnected removable drive, unavailable network share, or moved folder will not provide playable music.
Check the file before blaming the game
- Confirm the filename ends in
.mp3,.wma, or.m4a. - Confirm the file plays in a normal Windows audio player.
- Confirm it is not protected by DRM.
- Confirm the file or shortcut is inside the User Music folder that the game is reading.
- Run a scan after adding or moving files.
These checks separate a library problem from a game-indexing problem. A file that cannot play outside the game is unlikely to become usable after a scan.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect Self Radio tracks
The Self Radio station does not appear
Return to Pause Menu > Settings > Audio and run a scan. If you used a shortcut, verify that it is a working Windows shortcut and that its target folder is reachable. Also check that you are running the PC edition; the console versions do not use the same Self Radio workflow.
Some songs appear but others do not
Compare the missing files with the formats Rockstar lists: non-DRM MP3, WMA, and M4A. A mixed library can contain playable files alongside DRM-protected or otherwise unsupported files. Test the missing file independently, then place a known-compatible copy in User Music and run another scan.

Use Perform Quick Scan for Music after a small change. If the game still shows the old library, run Perform Full Scan for Music. Auto-scan can perform a Quick Scan when the game starts, but it does not remove the need to check the folder path when files are stored somewhere else.

Tracks play in an unexpected order
Check the selected mode. Sequential follows folder order, while Shuffle and Radio randomize playback. Radio mode also inserts adverts and DJ banter and intentionally does not allow skipping.
A shortcut works on one day and fails later
Open the shortcut’s target location in Windows. If the target is on a removable or network drive, reconnect it before launching the game. A shortcut does not copy the audio; it only points Self Radio to the original location.
Use your music on PS4 while playing GTA 5
PS4 does not use the PC Self Radio station. PlayStation documents Spotify playback while a compatible game is running.
- Install or open Spotify on the PS4 and sign in to the account that has access to the service.
- Start GTA 5.
- Hold the PS button to open the Quick Menu.
- Choose Music > Spotify.
- Select the track or playlist you want to hear, then return to the game.
This audio is controlled by the console and is not added to GTA’s radio wheel. PlayStation notes that streaming games can prevent playback, and service availability depends on your region and account access. Menus and service behavior can change, so use the current PlayStation interface if labels differ.
Use your music on PS5 while playing GTA 5
Spotify playback
- Open Spotify and sign in on the PS5.
- Launch GTA 5.
- Press the PS button to open Control Center.
- Open Music.
- Choose Spotify and select the track or podcast.
As on PS4, Spotify plays through the console’s music controls. It does not create a Self Radio station or import tracks into the game.
Local files from a USB drive
PlayStation’s PS5 FAQ says the console can play music from a USB drive and lists MP3, FLAC, and AAC as supported file types. This provides a local-file option if you do not want to stream from Spotify. The USB route is still a PS5 system feature, not a way to populate GTA 5’s radio wheel. Follow the current PlayStation USB music instructions for the drive’s setup and file-handling requirements, because those details can change with system software.
A USB drive is only relevant to this PS5 playback method. You do not need one for PC Self Radio or for Spotify playback on either PlayStation console.

Rockstar’s PC feature was described in a 2015 Newswire answer as a “fully featured and properly integrated radio station.” That historical statement explains why the PC method feels like part of the game, but it should not be treated as a current promise about every console platform. Console music options documented today are provided by the console operating system or an installed music service, so the music remains separate from GTA’s radio wheel and station logic.

On a console, you therefore control volume, track selection, and playback through the PlayStation music interface rather than through Self Radio’s Sequential, Shuffle, or Radio settings.
What to do on Xbox
Current Xbox-specific instructions for playing local files or background music during GTA 5 are not established by the official material used here. Do not apply the PC User Music path to an Xbox console: it is a Windows folder workflow, not a universal GTA 5 feature.
If you play on Xbox, check the current Xbox support documentation and the console’s own media or background-audio options for your system version and region. Confirm whether the option supports GTA 5, whether it uses local files or a streaming service, and whether it continues while the game is active. Until those points are verified, there is no reliable button-by-button Xbox procedure to give.

You want songs inside the GTA radio wheel
Use the PC version and Self Radio. Add non-DRM MP3, WMA, or M4A files, scan them, and select Self Radio.
You want a streaming playlist while playing on PlayStation
Use Spotify through the PS4 Quick Menu or PS5 Control Center. The playlist will play alongside the game rather than becoming a GTA station.
You want local files without a PC
On PS5, the documented local route is music from a USB drive using supported MP3, FLAC, or AAC files. It remains console playback, not Self Radio.
You play on Xbox
Verify the current Xbox feature set first. The available evidence does not establish whether a particular Xbox model, account, or service supports background or local playback with GTA 5.

Which audio formats can GTA 5 Self Radio read?
Rockstar lists non-DRM MP3, WMA, and M4A files. A file having one of those extensions does not make DRM-protected audio playable, so test files that fail and use an unprotected copy.
Do I have to copy every song into User Music?
No. Rockstar also allows shortcuts in User Music that point to folders containing your music. The destination must remain available; a shortcut is only a pointer and does not duplicate the files.
What is the difference between Quick Scan and Full Scan?
Both are available at Pause Menu > Settings > Audio. Use Quick Scan after a small library change. If tracks remain missing or you have reorganized the library, try Full Scan. Auto-scan can run a Quick Scan at startup when enabled.

Can I skip songs in Self Radio?
Sequential and Shuffle allow skipping. Radio mode plays tracks randomly with in-game adverts and DJ banter, but tracks cannot be skipped in that mode.
Can I use my own files as a GTA radio station on PS4 or PS5?
The documented console options are separate from the GTA radio wheel. PS4 and PS5 support Spotify during compatible gameplay, and PlayStation’s PS5 FAQ lists USB playback for MP3, FLAC, and AAC files.
Will Spotify work while any game is streaming on PS4?
PlayStation’s PS4 instructions say playback is unavailable when streaming games. Spotify and other service features can also vary by region and account access.
Is a USB drive required for PC Self Radio or PlayStation Spotify?
No. A USB drive is relevant only to the PS5 local-file playback route. PC Self Radio uses User Music, while Spotify playback uses the console’s music controls.
Are there reliable Xbox steps for playing personal music in GTA 5?
Current Xbox-specific behavior is not established here. Do not use the Windows User Music path on Xbox; check current Xbox support for your console, region, and chosen service before relying on background playback.
The Bottom Line
For a true custom station inside GTA 5, use Self Radio on Windows PC: place non-DRM MP3, WMA, or M4A files or folder shortcuts in User Music, scan them under Settings > Audio, and choose a Sequential, Shuffle, or Radio mode. On PS4 and PS5, use Spotify through the console controls; on PS5, a USB drive can provide local MP3, FLAC, or AAC playback. Those console options play alongside GTA rather than appearing in its radio wheel. Xbox instructions should be verified against current Xbox guidance.
