How to Play Your Own Movies and TV Shows on a Streaming Device

You can watch personal video files on a streaming device in two main ways: connect a USB drive if the device supports it, or stream files over your home network from a computer or NAS running media-server software. USB is usually the simpler choice for a small collection; a server is more convenient for a library you want to browse on multiple devices. In either case, playback depends on the exact device and app, plus the video, audio and subtitle formats in each file.

Choose USB or a network media server

Consideration USB playback Network media server
Setup Connect a drive to a supported USB port and open a compatible media-player app. Keep a computer or NAS available, configure server software, and use a compatible app or DLNA player on the streaming device.
Browsing Browse files and folders; some players can scan a drive. Server software can organize a library and present it through a dedicated interface.
Compatibility Depends on the device, player, file container, codecs, subtitles and audio equipment. The client still has format limits, but the server may play the file as-is, repackage it or transcode it.
Availability The drive must remain connected to the playback device. The server host must be running and connected to the home network.
What you may need A USB drive if you need storage, and a device with a confirmed port. A computer or NAS host, storage and compatible server/client software.

These are practical differences between the documented playback paths, not performance measurements. Roku describes both USB playback and access to a local-network media server in its Roku Media Player guide.

Play files from a USB drive

USB is a good starting point if your collection is modest and your streaming device has a USB port. Check the exact model first: not every device in a product family has one. On a supported Roku device, the basic route is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the drive to the device’s USB port.
  2. Open Roku Media Player.
  3. Choose the media type and drive, browse the folders, and select a file.

Roku lists FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, exFAT and HFS+ among the supported drive file systems. Its guide lists H.264/AVC video in MKV, MP4 or MOV containers; 4K-capable devices also list HEVC and VP9, and some devices list AV1. These formats are not a guarantee for every Roku model: Roku says support varies by model and firmware. The player may omit files it determines cannot be played, and Roku Media Player does not support DRM-protected content. See Roku’s device and file-format guidance before preparing a drive.

A file extension alone does not establish compatibility. An MKV or MP4 file can contain different video and audio codecs, and playback can also depend on subtitle support and the television or receiver in the audio path. Roku notes that some audio formats depend on the connected equipment. For subtitles in Roku Media Player, embedded MKV subtitle tracks are supported; external SRT or VTT files should share the video’s basename, with an optional language suffix.

Stream from a computer or NAS

A network server is usually more suitable when you want one organized library available to multiple devices. The media stays on a computer, compatible NAS or other supported host; server software makes it available on the home network; a streaming-device app or DLNA player accesses it. Plex documents this server-and-client arrangement for libraries that can include movies, TV, home videos, music and photos. Its overview of Plex describes installing Plex Media Server where the media is stored and a Plex app on the viewing device.

  1. Choose a computer or compatible NAS that can remain available while you watch.
  2. Install media-server software on that host and point it to your video folders.
  3. Install the matching client app on the streaming device, or use a supported DLNA player.
  4. Connect the host and playback device to the home network, then open the library in the client.

For Roku’s DLNA route, Roku and the server must be on the same network. Roku lists Plex, Serviio, Windows Media Player/Center, Twonky, MiniDLNA/ReadyDLNA/ReadyMedia and Synology among the DLNA servers it has tested; some routers and NAS devices also include a DLNA server. A DLNA server is one option, not the only way to access a library. Details are in Roku’s local-network playback guide.

Choose software and organize the library

Plex, Jellyfin and Emby are examples of media-server software. Their client apps and supported features vary by platform, so check availability for your particular streaming device. Jellyfin recommends a Movies library with individual folders for each film and recognizable names, ideally including the title and year. It identifies MP4 and MKV as common formats, but says disc-image formats are not supported even if they may happen to work; it recommends remuxing or extracting them. Its movie-library documentation also cautions that reserved characters in names can cause problems.

Format support is client-specific. For example, Emby’s Apple TV documentation lists direct-play support for H.264/H.265 in M4V, MP4 and MOV, along with particular audio and subtitle types. That describes the Apple TV client, not every Emby app. Consult the documentation for the client you will actually use: Emby Apple TV support and Emby documentation.

Understand direct play, direct stream and transcoding

A server does not make every file compatible automatically. Plex describes three ways a server can deliver media to a client:

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
  • Direct play: The client supports the media, so it is sent as-is.
  • Direct stream: The server repackages compatible streams for the client without converting the underlying media streams.
  • Transcoding: The server converts media to a form the client can handle.

These distinctions explain why a file might play directly on one device but require server processing on another. Whether transcoding succeeds smoothly depends on the file, server, client and network; it is not a universal fix or a guarantee of any particular performance. Plex explains these behaviors in its streaming overview and direct play and direct stream guide.

Troubleshoot a file that will not play

  • The drive or player is missing: Confirm the exact device has a USB port or the required client app. Do not assume every model in a family has the same ports or capabilities.
  • A file does not appear: Check its container and video codec against the official documentation for the exact device and app. On Roku, unsupported files may be hidden by Roku Media Player, and model or firmware differences matter. Plex’s supported-media-formats documentation explains compatibility in the Plex context.
  • Video works but audio does not: Check the audio codec and whether the television or receiver can decode it, including the passthrough path. The attached equipment can affect what plays.
  • Subtitles are missing: Check whether the player supports the subtitle format. For Roku USB playback, an external SRT or VTT file needs the same basename as the video, with an optional language suffix; an embedded MKV track is another supported option.
  • A network library is unavailable: Make sure the server software is running and the host and playback device are connected to the same network. If the server cannot transcode a file the client cannot handle, that file may need conversion or another compatible playback route.
  • A Jellyfin movie is not recognized: Put it in its own folder and use a clear title-and-year name; avoid special reserved characters noted in Jellyfin’s naming guidance.

For any route, check the device, player app and file together: a container name such as MKV or MP4 does not tell you every codec or subtitle track inside.
