You can play some Xbox disc games without inserting the disc every time by claiming a limited digital entitlement—but the game must be eligible, and you must keep the qualifying disc. Insert the disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X and launch the game. Xbox says most Xbox One and Series X discs support the feature, but not all do. An Xbox Series S cannot read discs.
How to claim an eligible Xbox disc game digitally
- Use a disc-capable console. The claim process is for Xbox One or Xbox Series X. Series S has no disc drive.
- Insert the qualifying game disc. Eligibility varies by title, and Microsoft may change which discs qualify.
- Launch the game. For a supported disc, this is the step Xbox identifies for claiming the digital entitlement. Follow any on-screen prompts.
- Keep the disc. The entitlement remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft may revalidate it and may suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess the disc.
Xbox announced the feature on August 26, 2026, saying it was starting with “thousands of titles” and would add more over time. That is not an exact eligible-game count. Check the console with the specific disc rather than assuming every title or edition qualifies. Xbox Wire’s announcement describes the claim process and eligibility at launch.

What “without the disc” means—and what it does not
Claiming an entitlement is different from installing a disc game
A traditional disc installation does not itself grant a digital license. For supported backward-compatible disc games, Xbox downloads the game to the console, but you must leave the disc in the drive to play. The newer disc-to-digital route is a separate, limited entitlement for eligible discs. Xbox’s backward-compatibility guidance explains the traditional disc-based flow.
You cannot sell the disc after claiming
No. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules condition this particular entitlement on continued possession of the qualifying disc. The limited entitlement cannot be transferred separately from that disc. If you sell or otherwise give up the disc, access may be revalidated, suspended, or revoked. Microsoft’s usage rules for Digital Goods set out that condition.

Not every feature follows automatically
Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming are available only when the particular game supports them. Claiming an entitlement does not make every title playable across devices or through cloud streaming.

Can you play Xbox disc games on Series S?
No. Xbox Series S is an all-digital console and does not support disc-based games. You can play a game on Series S if you have a compatible digital license or another supported access route. A disc-to-digital entitlement must be claimed using a supported disc-capable console; the Series S cannot read the disc itself. Microsoft’s Series S product information describes the disc limitation and compares it with Series X.

How digital game sharing differs from disc authentication
Microsoft describes two licenses for Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games: a user-based license tied to the Microsoft account and a device-based license attached to the designated Home console. Other accounts using that Home console can access eligible content licensed to the device, subject to the rules. On a roaming console, the purchaser needs to be signed in and connected. This sharing model applies to digital content; it does not convert a disc entitlement or remove its continued-possession condition. Microsoft says the purchaser can change the Home console up to five times in a rolling one-year period. Quick answers before you start
- Already installed the game? If it is still using the traditional disc license, installation does not remove the disc check. Insert the disc to play, or see whether that disc qualifies for the separate disc-to-digital entitlement.
- Have only a Series S? You cannot claim a disc-based entitlement on it because it cannot read the disc. Use a digital license or another supported access route.
- Disc not eligible, or no longer yours? Check whether the digital Xbox version is available for purchase or currently included in a subscription catalog. Verify the exact version and access terms before relying on either option.
