Yes. You can play Xbox games on a television without owning an Xbox console by streaming them through Xbox Cloud Gaming. The supported route is the Xbox app or gaming portal built into certain smart TVs, or the Xbox app on selected Fire TV streaming devices connected by HDMI. You need a compatible controller, an internet connection that can sustain cloud streaming, and— for most games—an eligible Game Pass plan. Selected free-to-play games can be launched with a free Microsoft account in supported regions.

Cloud Gaming streams the game from Microsoft’s servers to your screen; it does not install the Xbox version locally on the television. Before buying hardware or subscribing for one particular title, check that the exact TV or streaming-device model, your country, your Game Pass plan and the game are all supported.

What you need before you start

The fastest way to avoid an unusable setup is to check all four requirements first. Support is model-specific, and a television carrying a supported brand name is not automatically compatible.

  • A supported screen or streaming device: Xbox lists selected LG, Samsung and VIDAA televisions, plus selected Fire TV devices. Exact models, operating-system versions and regional availability apply.
  • A Microsoft account: You use it to sign in to the Xbox app. A free account is sufficient for selected free-to-play cloud games in supported regions.
  • An eligible subscription for most games: Xbox identifies Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or Essential as cloud-gaming plans. The game must also be cloud playable under that plan and available in your region.
  • A compatible controller: The standard TV experience requires a controller connected by Bluetooth or USB. Xbox and PlayStation controllers are examples, but compatibility varies by device and model.
  • A stable network: Xbox recommends a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and 20 Mbps download speed for TV play. That figure is a recommendation, not a guarantee of low latency or perfect picture quality.

Open Xbox’s current TV compatibility page and the Cloud Gaming catalog for your market before you spend money. Device lists, plans, game rights and regional availability can change.

Choose the setup route that fits your hardware

Route What you need Setup path Important limits
Built-in TV app A selected LG, Samsung or VIDAA TV Open or install the Xbox app or gaming portal on the TV, sign in, pair a controller and choose a cloud game Only listed models and software versions work; availability differs by country
Fire TV device A compatible Fire TV stick or cube and an HDMI television Connect the device, install or open the Xbox app, sign in, pair a controller and start a supported cloud game Compatibility is limited to named generations; not every Fire TV product is supported
Another supported screen A supported Windows PC, Apple device or Android device, optionally connected to the TV Use Xbox Cloud Gaming on the supported device and display it on the television where practical This is a fallback when neither the TV app nor a supported Fire TV device is available

Route 1: Use the Xbox app on the television

This is the cleanest option because no streaming stick is required. It works only on selected models, not on every recent TV from a supported manufacturer.

LG televisions

Xbox lists selected LG TVs running webOS 24 or newer. Some 2022 and 2023 models qualify after an update to software version 23.20.01 or higher. Eligible product families include selected OLED, QNED, NanoCell and UHD models. Those family names are not a blanket approval: check the exact model in Xbox’s current list and install any required LG software update.

Samsung televisions and monitors

Xbox lists selected Samsung Smart TVs from 2020 onward and selected monitors from 2022 onward. Samsung’s Gaming Hub provides the exact supported-device list, so the purchase year alone cannot confirm compatibility.

VIDAA televisions

The Canadian Xbox TV page identifies selected VIDAA OS-powered devices running VIDAA OS 9.6 or higher. Local model and market support can differ, so use the page for your country rather than assuming that every VIDAA television qualifies.

TV-app setup steps

  1. Confirm the model and software. Find the model number in the TV’s Settings or About screen, compare it with Xbox’s supported list, and update the TV operating system if Xbox specifies a minimum version.
  2. Open the Xbox experience. Launch the Xbox app or the manufacturer’s gaming portal. If it is not preinstalled, use the television’s official app store to install it where Xbox provides that option.
  3. Sign in. Enter the Microsoft account shown by the app. A phone or computer may be offered as a faster way to complete the sign-in code.
  4. Connect the controller. Put the controller in Bluetooth pairing mode and select it in the TV’s Bluetooth settings, or connect it by USB if the TV supports wired input. Keep the controller near the television during pairing.
  5. Open cloud gaming. Browse the cloud-enabled catalog, select a title and choose Play. The first launch can take longer while the stream is established.
  6. Test before settling in. Play for several minutes, checking input delay, audio and image stability. If the stream struggles, switch from congested Wi-Fi to 5 GHz or Ethernet before changing subscriptions.

Route 2: Add a supported Fire TV device

A Fire TV device is useful when the television has an HDMI port but does not support the Xbox app itself. Xbox’s list includes selected Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st generation), Fire TV Cube (3rd generation), Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd generation) and Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd generation) devices. This is a compatibility list, not approval for every Fire TV model or revision. Verify the current list and availability in your country before buying.

Fire TV setup steps

  1. Check the exact generation. Read the model information on the device or its packaging and compare it with Xbox’s supported Fire TV list. Similar names can represent different generations.
  2. Connect the hardware. Plug the Fire TV device into an HDMI input, connect its power adapter, select that HDMI input on the television and complete the Fire TV network setup.
  3. Install the Xbox app. Search the Fire TV app store for the Xbox app, install it and open it. If the app is unavailable, the device or region may not be supported.
  4. Sign in to Microsoft. Follow the on-screen code or account prompt. Use the account that owns the eligible Game Pass plan if you are playing a subscription title.
  5. Pair a controller. Open Fire TV’s controller and Bluetooth settings, put the compatible controller into pairing mode and select it. USB connection may be possible with the appropriate Fire TV setup, but Bluetooth is the usual TV-stick path.
  6. Start a cloud-supported game. Select a title shown as playable through the cloud. If a game is absent, check plan, region and catalog status rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app.

Route 3: Use another supported screen

Xbox Cloud Gaming also supports device classes such as Windows PCs and Apple or Android phones and tablets. If your television is unsupported, you can use one of those supported devices and display it on the TV when the device and cable or wireless-display method permit. This fallback still depends on the same account, controller, network and game-availability requirements; it is not a way to turn an unsupported TV into a native Xbox app device.

Subscriptions, free games and the cloud catalog

Most cloud-streamed games require an active Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or Essential subscription, a supported region and a title included for cloud play. A Game Pass library is not identical to the cloud catalog: game rights, features, platforms and availability vary over time. A title that appears in a console or PC library may not be streamable on your TV.

There is a significant exception for selected free-to-play games. Xbox allows titles such as Fortnite to be played through the cloud with a free Microsoft account in supported regions, without requiring a paid Game Pass plan. The exception applies to qualifying games and markets, not to the entire catalog.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.

Check a game before subscribing

  1. Open the current Xbox Cloud Gaming catalog while signed into the account you intend to use.
  2. Search for the exact game edition. Deluxe, regional or separately sold editions can have different rights.
  3. Confirm that the title is marked for cloud play on your device and that your Game Pass tier includes it, if a subscription is required.
  4. Check the region selected by your account and the service availability for your country.

Do not treat Xbox’s description of “hundreds” of games as a fixed count. The live catalog changes as licensing, plan terms and regional rights change.

Controller compatibility and input choices

A compatible controller is required for the usual TV setup. Xbox lists Bluetooth or USB connection and gives Xbox and Sony PlayStation controllers as examples. Compatibility can differ between a television app and a Fire TV app, and between controller revisions. Consult Xbox’s verified controller support information for the exact device before buying.

Pairing checklist

  • Charge the controller or install fresh batteries.
  • Disconnect it from another console, PC or phone so it is available for the TV or Fire TV device.
  • Enable Bluetooth on the host device, hold the controller’s pairing button until its light flashes, then select it from the discovered-device list.
  • If Bluetooth pairing is unreliable, test a USB connection supported by that host and cable.
  • After pairing, press several buttons in the Xbox app before launching a game; a controller that appears connected but sends no input may not be a verified model.

Cloud streaming does not promise support for every peripheral. Keyboard, mouse, specialty controls, headsets and other accessories can have additional restrictions, even when the controller works.

Network requirements and ways to reduce lag

Xbox’s TV guidance recommends Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi with at least 20 Mbps download speed. The general cloud-gaming guidance also notes that requirements vary by device and that 20 Mbps may be needed for best quality. Bandwidth alone cannot guarantee smooth play: latency, packet loss, wireless interference and household congestion affect the stream.

Improve a marginal connection

  1. Use Ethernet from the router to the TV or Fire TV device when practical.
  2. If using Wi-Fi, connect to the 5 GHz network and place the router close to the television, with minimal walls or appliances between them.
  3. Pause large downloads, 4K video streams and cloud backups on the same connection while playing.
  4. Restart the router and the streaming device if latency suddenly increases; then retest the same game.
  5. Compare performance at a quiet time. If it improves when other household traffic stops, the bottleneck is congestion rather than the controller or subscription.

A speed test can confirm that the connection reaches the recommended download figure, but it does not measure every route-specific problem. Persistent delay despite adequate speed usually points to Wi-Fi interference, distance from the router or a service-path issue.

What cloud streaming cannot guarantee

Streaming a game is different from running a console locally. Xbox notes that streamed play can have limitations involving video resolution, audio output, save storage, in-game purchases, user-generated content, companion-app support and peripheral support. The exact limitation depends on the title and device.

  • Resolution and audio: The stream may not match the resolution, frame rate or audio features available from a local console.
  • Saves: Save behavior depends on the game and service. Use the same Microsoft account consistently and allow the game to finish syncing before closing the app.
  • Purchases: Some in-game purchases or store functions may not be available inside a streamed session.
  • User-generated content: Creation or browsing tools can be restricted on some streamed versions.
  • Companion apps and peripherals: Features that rely on a second app, camera, specialized accessory or unusual input device may not work.
  • Availability: A game can leave a plan, become unavailable in a region or be supported on one platform but not another.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The Xbox app is missing

Recheck the exact TV model, operating-system version and country on Xbox’s current compatibility page. Update the TV, search its official app store again and verify that you are not using a model that shares a brand family with a supported one but is excluded from the list. If the TV is unsupported, use a listed Fire TV generation or another supported screen instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app opens but no game will start

Confirm that the title is in the cloud catalog, included in your Game Pass tier and available in your region. Sign out and back in with the account that holds the subscription. For a free-to-play game, confirm that the title is one of the qualifying exceptions and that cloud access is offered in your market.

The controller will not pair or does not respond

Charge it, disconnect it from other devices, restart Bluetooth on the host and pair again. Try USB if supported. If the controller pairs but produces no input, verify the exact model against Xbox’s compatibility list; a generic Bluetooth gamepad is not automatically supported.

The picture is blurry or controls feel delayed

Move to Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, reduce other traffic and place the router closer to the TV. Check that the connection reaches 20 Mbps down, then restart the app. If the problem affects only one title, compare another cloud game to determine whether the issue is game-specific.

The Fire TV device cannot find the Xbox app

Confirm the hardware generation, Fire OS region and current Xbox support list. Similar-looking sticks can have different compatibility. If the model is not named by Xbox, do not assume a later or cheaper revision will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to decide whether this is the right replacement for a console

Cloud Gaming is a good fit when you already have a listed TV or Fire TV device, a reliable connection and a controller, and you are comfortable with a changing catalog. It is less suitable when you need guaranteed local rendering, the highest available resolution, offline play, specialized peripherals or a title that is not cloud-enabled. In those cases, the TV app cannot substitute for console hardware.

For most readers, the sensible order is: verify the exact device, verify the game and plan, test the network, then buy only the missing controller or supported streaming hardware. That sequence prevents paying for a subscription or stick that cannot deliver the game you wanted.
