You can play Xbox games on a Windows PC in three different ways: install a native PC release, buy a digital title with Xbox Play Anywhere, or stream a supported game through cloud gaming. The Xbox PC app is the hub for the first two options and, in eligible cases, cloud play.
Use the same Microsoft account that owns the game or subscription, check the individual listing for Windows PC support, and choose the route that matches whether you want permanent ownership, a subscription catalog, or no installation.

Choose the right way to play
“Xbox exclusive” does not automatically mean “console only.” Some Xbox-published games have native Windows versions, some are included in PC Game Pass, and some can be streamed without a local PC release. The store listing for the specific game is the final authority because support, catalogs, cloud rights, and regions change.
Recommended Free Tools
| Method | What you receive | Installation | Access period | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Play Anywhere | One digital purchase includes supported Xbox console and Windows PC versions, with cross-device progress, add-ons, and achievements. | Install the Windows version from the Xbox PC app. | Permanent entitlement, subject to the title remaining supported. | You want to buy once and own the game on both platforms. |
| PC Game Pass | Access to the changing catalog of included Windows PC games. | Install included titles from the Xbox PC app. | Only while the subscription is active and the game remains in the catalog. | You want to try many games without buying each one. |
| Cloud gaming | Remote play for supported games on an eligible plan, region, and device; select owned console games can also be streamed in supported circumstances. | No game download. | While your plan, game rights, region, and network support the session. | Your PC cannot meet the local requirements or you want to start quickly. |
Requirements for Xbox gaming on Windows
The Xbox PC app requires Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer. Xbox lists 150 MB of storage for the app itself and a 720p display. Those figures do not describe the games: every title can require substantially more storage, memory, processor performance, graphics capability, and a newer operating-system feature.
#1 Best Overall
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Update Windows to version 22H2 or later before troubleshooting the app.
- Search Windows for “Xbox.” Xbox says the app is pre-installed on most Windows 11 PCs; if it is missing, install the official Xbox PC app through Microsoft’s Windows distribution channels.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that made the digital purchase or carries the Game Pass subscription. A different Windows account or Xbox profile can make an otherwise eligible game appear unavailable.
- Keep enough free storage for the game and its updates. Read the title’s own system-requirements panel before starting a large download.
- For cloud gaming, confirm that the game is cloud-playable in your country and that your plan includes the required cloud access. A stable, fast connection matters more than local graphics hardware.
Option 1: Buy once with Xbox Play Anywhere
Xbox Play Anywhere is a digital cross-buy entitlement. When a game carries the Play Anywhere badge, one qualifying digital purchase includes the Xbox console and Windows PC versions at no additional charge. Supported games can carry saves, add-ons, and achievements between the two platforms.
It is not a converter for every Xbox console game. A game without a native Windows release cannot be made into a PC game merely because it runs on an Xbox console, and a physical console disc does not create a Play Anywhere PC entitlement.
How to check eligibility
- Open the game’s Xbox or Windows Store listing.
- Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge.
- Confirm that the listing explicitly shows Windows PC support, rather than only Xbox console support.
- Check whether cloud play is listed separately if you intend to stream instead of install.
How to install a Play Anywhere game
- Purchase the digital edition through the Xbox or Windows Store while signed in to the Microsoft account you will use on the PC.
- Launch the Xbox PC app and sign in with that same account.
- Use the app’s search field to find the game, then set the platform filter to Windows PC.
- Open the title page and select the install control for the PC version.
- Choose the destination drive, allow the download to finish, and launch the game from your Xbox library.
When you later sign in on a supported Xbox console, the same account can retrieve the console entitlement. Cross-device saves and achievements depend on the game supporting the relevant Xbox services; they are not a promise that every third-party PC release shares data.

Option 2: Use PC Game Pass
PC Game Pass provides a rotating catalog of Windows PC games. A subscription tier that includes PC access is required; the exact plans, names, prices, regions, and catalog are subject to change. You do not permanently own a title downloaded through the catalog.
Install a Game Pass title
- Join PC Game Pass or another current tier that explicitly includes PC access.
- Open the Xbox PC app and sign in with the Microsoft account used for the subscription.
- Browse or search the catalog and set the platform filter to Windows PC.
- Open a game’s page and verify that it is included in your current plan, is available in your region, and lists PC support.
- Select Install, choose a drive with sufficient free space, and wait for the download and any required updates.
What happens when a game leaves
Access ends when the subscription is cancelled, expires, or the title leaves the catalog. A game can remain installed but refuse to launch until the account again has a qualifying entitlement. Catalog membership also differs by plan and region, so check the live title page rather than relying on an old list.
If you decide to keep a Game Pass game after it leaves, purchase a digital edition that includes a PC version. If that edition carries the Play Anywhere badge, the cross-buy and cross-save benefits described above apply to the qualifying purchase.

Option 3: Stream through cloud gaming
Cloud gaming runs the game on Microsoft’s remote hardware and sends the video to your PC. You do not download the game, but you still need a supported title, an eligible subscription or ownership right, a supported country, and a reliable connection. The Xbox app or a supported browser/device can be used where cloud gaming is offered.
Start a cloud session
- Open the Xbox PC app or the supported Xbox cloud-gaming web experience for your region.
- Sign in with the account that has the required Game Pass or game entitlement.
- Find the title and look for the cloud-play option. If the cloud control is absent, the game, plan, device, or region is not eligible at that moment.
- Connect a compatible controller when the game requires one, or use keyboard and mouse when the title supports those controls.
- Start the session and allow the service to complete its connection check before playing.
Streaming owned console games
On July 15, 2025, Xbox announced a rollout allowing Game Pass Ultimate members in 28 supported countries to stream select owned console games through the Xbox PC app. This is a limited, changeable catalog rather than a guarantee that every digitally owned Xbox game can be streamed. Check the title page and your country’s current eligibility before relying on the feature.
When cloud play is the better choice
- Your PC lacks the graphics card, processor, memory, or storage required for a local installation.
- You are using a computer with limited free space or a metered download connection.
- You want to test a game before committing to a large installation.
- You are travelling with a supported device and region.
Streaming trades download time for network dependence. Image quality, input response, and interruptions are affected by connection quality and service conditions, so local installation remains preferable when you need predictable latency or offline play.

What “Xbox exclusives on PC” actually includes
There is no single official, current number for “Xbox exclusives playable on PC.” The answer changes as Microsoft releases games on Windows, adds or removes titles from subscriptions, expands cloud rights, and varies availability by country. Count only games that meet your chosen route’s conditions: a native Windows release, a Play Anywhere entitlement, a current PC Game Pass listing, or cloud eligibility.
Xbox reported more than 1,000 Xbox Play Anywhere games in a May 21, 2025 Xbox Wire update. That is a dated total for the Play Anywhere program, not a count of current Xbox exclusives and not a promise that every one of those games is in PC Game Pass or available for cloud streaming.

Understanding PC versions and system requirements
A native PC release is a separate build designed for Windows. It can have different graphics settings, input options, storage needs, and performance requirements from the console edition. The Xbox app’s 150 MB requirement covers the app, not the game, and a 720p display is only the app’s listed minimum display target.

| Windows edition and version | The Xbox PC app needs Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or newer. | Windows Settings system-information page and the Xbox app’s installation requirements. |
| PC platform support | A console-only listing will not install a native Windows build. | The game’s store page and the Xbox app’s Windows PC filter. |

Troubleshooting: why a game is missing or will not install
The game does not appear in your library
- Check that the Xbox app account exactly matches the account that bought the game or holds Game Pass.
- Search for the title manually and set the platform filter to Windows PC.
- Reopen the title page and look for the Play Anywhere badge or a PC-inclusion statement. A console-only purchase is not a PC entitlement.
The install button is unavailable
- Confirm that Windows is version 22H2 or newer.
- Verify that your subscription tier includes PC access and that the game remains in the catalog.
- Check the game’s PC requirements and available storage.
- Review regional availability; a title can be listed for another market but unavailable in your country.
The game was installed through Game Pass but now asks you to buy it
Verify that the subscription is active and that the title has not left the catalog. If it has been removed, the installed files do not preserve access. Buy a qualifying PC edition if you want to continue without the subscription.
Cloud play is missing or keeps disconnecting
- Confirm that the game has a cloud-play option and that your plan includes it.
- Check the supported-country list for your current location.
- Use a more reliable connection or move closer to the network access point; cloud sessions depend on continuous connectivity.
- If the service supports both browser and app access, try the other supported route to isolate an app-specific problem.
Controllers, keyboard, and mouse
An Xbox Wireless Controller for PC is optional. Many supported games accept keyboard and mouse, while others are designed primarily for a controller. Connect the input device before launching a cloud session or game, then check the title’s control settings. A controller can be useful for console-style action games, but it does not change entitlement, Play Anywhere status, or PC system requirements.
How saves, add-ons, and achievements travel
For supported Play Anywhere titles, the account can carry in-game progress, add-ons, and achievements between Xbox console and Windows PC. The feature depends on the specific game using the required Xbox services. A PC game obtained through another storefront, a title without Play Anywhere support, or an unsupported cloud scenario may not provide the same continuity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the same Microsoft/Xbox account on every device and allow the game to finish synchronizing before closing it or switching platforms. If progress differs, first confirm the account and edition, then check whether the title actually advertises cross-device support.
Which route should you choose?
- Choose Play Anywhere when you want a permanent digital purchase on both Xbox and Windows PC and the game displays the badge.
- Choose PC Game Pass when you value a broad, changing catalog and accept that access ends with the subscription or a catalog removal.
- Choose cloud gaming when avoiding installation matters more than having local files, and your title, plan, country, and connection all qualify.
- Use a native PC purchase outside those routes only after confirming the Windows edition and its requirements; console ownership alone does not guarantee PC access.
Check the live Xbox app and individual game listing immediately before buying or installing. Catalogs, prices, supported devices, cloud rights, and regional availability are volatile, while the Play Anywhere badge and Windows PC listing identify the entitlement you are actually receiving.
