To play VALORANT with friends, add or find them in the client’s Social panel, invite them to your party, and have the party leader choose a mode and start the queue. Unrated and Competitive use different eligibility rules. If Competitive refuses the party, read the in-client warning first: rank spread, party size, account eligibility, or an account restriction may be the cause. Riot’s exact limits can change by patch, region, and queue, so treat the live client and current Riot support information as authoritative rather than relying on old rank thresholds.
How do I play VALORANT with friends?
The basic process is the same whether you plan to play casually or competitively: make sure everyone is online, form a party, select a mode, and queue from the party leader’s client. You do not invite friends from the matchmaking screen itself; the party exists first, and the leader starts matchmaking for everyone in it.

- Open the Social panel. Use the friends list in the VALORANT client to see who is online and available.
- Add a friend if necessary. Use the panel’s add-friend or search control and enter the player’s Riot ID and tag exactly as displayed. A pending request must be accepted before that player can normally be invited.
- Invite the player. Select the friend in the Social panel and choose the party-invite option. Repeat for each person you want in the group.
- Check the party roster. Confirm that every intended player appears in the same party, rather than merely being online or in a different party.
- Choose the mode. The party leader selects Unrated, Competitive, or another available queue from the Play screen.
- Start matchmaking. The party leader presses the queue button. Everyone enters the same search as long as the selected mode accepts the party.
- Read any warning before changing anything. If the queue button is disabled or the client displays an eligibility message, use that message to identify the problem instead of repeatedly sending invitations.
Menu wording and panel placement can change with client updates or language settings, but the sequence remains: Social panel, party invitation, mode selection, then queueing by the leader.

- Ask each friend to confirm that VALORANT is running, they are signed into the intended account, and they are not already committed to another party or match.
- Verify that invitations are going to the correct Riot ID and tag. Similar display names can belong to different accounts.
- Check whether anyone has a visible restriction, queue lock, or other account notice.
- Decide whether the group wants an unranked match or Competitive before assembling a large party. Competitive can reject a group that another mode accepts.
- Keep the client warning visible or note its wording. It usually gives more useful information than a generic failure notification.
How the party leader starts a match
Once the roster is assembled, the leader controls the queue selection. The other players do not need to start separate searches.
- Open the Play screen while the party is intact.
- Select the desired queue.
- Wait for the client to validate the party. This is where rank, party-size, account, or restriction checks can appear.
- If the queue is eligible, start matchmaking and remain in the party while the search runs.
- If the client rejects the queue, stop and resolve the stated issue. Removing a player, changing modes, or waiting for a restriction to expire may be necessary.
A friend can be online and successfully invited yet still be unable to enter a particular queue. “In the party” and “eligible for this mode” are separate checks.
Unrated and Competitive do not have the same party rules
Use the following as a decision guide, not as a substitute for the live eligibility check. Exact caps and restrictions are patch- and region-sensitive.

If the goal is simply to play together, Unrated is the practical fallback when Competitive rejects the composition. If the goal is to earn or protect rank, do not switch modes assuming the same eligibility or progression rules will carry over.

Can different ranks play together in VALORANT?
Sometimes, but there is no single permanent answer that applies to every Competitive party. Riot has changed rank-disparity rules over time, and the current client may distinguish between small parties and a full five-player stack. The eligibility warning shown for your exact group is the immediate answer.
What the client may be checking
- Rank spread: The gap between the highest and lowest ranked players may exceed the limit for the party’s size.
- Party composition: A rule can differ for two or three players versus a full five-player group.
- Account status: A player may not yet be eligible for Competitive or may have a queue-specific lock.
- Region and patch: Riot can deploy different rules or timing by region and update them in a patch.
Do not combine rank limits from different years. A historical three-tier rule and a later five-stack exception describe different patch eras, not one universal formula.
Can a five-stack queue ranked together?
A five-stack means five players entering Competitive as one party. Riot’s Patch 3.10 announcement on November 16, 2021 explicitly said, "We’re removing all ranked restrictions from 5-stack parties in Competitive Queue." That announcement also described longer queues and reduced RR treatment for wide-rank five-stacks. It is historical patch guidance, not confirmation of the rules active in 2026. Check the current client before promising that a particular five-stack will be accepted.

The same Patch 3.10 notes said four-stacks were removed from Competitive queue under those rules. Because party policies can be revised, a four-player or five-player group should rely on the current queue response rather than assuming the 2021 arrangement still applies. Historical Competitive rules and why old guides conflict
Older instructions often appear contradictory because Riot changed the system. These are the relevant historical milestones:

The safest interpretation is simple: a rule from one patch cannot be used to override an eligibility message from the current client.
What happens to wide-rank five-stacks?
Even when a broad-rank group is accepted, it may not receive the same experience as a narrow-rank party. Riot’s Patch 3.10 notes described three effects:
- Longer searches: The system may spend more time finding an acceptable match for an unusual skill spread.
- Reduced RR treatment: The notes described reductions based on rank disparity. They gave examples including at least a 50% reduction for groups containing Diamond 3 or higher and at least a 75% reduction for groups containing Radiant, with examples reaching 90% under stated conditions.
- Different expectations from small parties: A five-stack exception did not mean that every group size received the same freedom or reward treatment.
Those percentages belong to the 2021 announcement. They are not verified current values. Do not calculate a predicted RR result from them before a match; use any warning or explanation the current client provides and consult current Riot notes if the behavior matters to your rank.

Why can’t my friend join my Competitive party?
Work through the causes in this order. It separates a social-panel problem from a mode-eligibility problem.
1. Confirm the invitation and party state
- Check that the friend accepted the invitation and appears in your party roster.
- Ask the friend to leave another party or finish any match that still has them marked as unavailable.
- Close and reopen the Social panel if the roster does not refresh, then send a new invitation.
2. Read the exact queue warning
Select Competitive and look for the message attached to the disabled queue control or party roster. A rank-disparity message points to composition; a restriction or account message points to the affected player. Do not infer the cause from a friend merely appearing offline.
3. Check rank and party-size eligibility
Compare the group’s ranks and count with the rule the client presents. If the warning says the spread or composition is not allowed, remove the conflicting player, form a smaller eligible party if the client permits it, or choose Unrated. Avoid relying on a remembered “three-tier” or “five-stack” rule from an old guide.
4. Check for an account restriction
Open any restriction notice on the affected account. Riot support documentation covers communication restrictions and related penalties, including possible game-mode restrictions; a voice restriction alone should not be assumed to block matchmaking in every case. Use the relevant regional support page and the notice’s stated end time. The available support result is Riot’s communication-restrictions article, which is localized in Arabic at that URL.

5. Try a different queue as a diagnostic
If the same party can start Unrated but not Competitive, the social connection is probably working and the difference is Competitive eligibility or restriction handling. If no queue accepts the group, investigate account status, connection state, and party synchronization instead.
6. Rebuild the party
Have everyone leave the party, return to the main client screen, and let one player invite the group again. This clears stale party state without changing anyone’s rank. If the warning names a specific account, rebuilding will not remove an active restriction; it only confirms whether the roster was out of sync.
How to choose the right queue for your group
Use this quick decision path before you invite a large group:

- Are the players at very different ranks? Expect the client to evaluate the spread and possibly apply longer searches or special RR treatment. If the group cannot queue, use the warning to decide who must switch modes.
- Is the party a full five-stack? Treat it as its own case. Historical Riot rules gave five-stacks an exception, but the current exception and its costs are not guaranteed.
- Does anyone have a restriction or unresolved eligibility notice? Resolve that account issue before changing the rest of the party.
- Does the group value a quick match more than ranked progression? Unrated is usually the cleaner choice when a wide-rank Competitive search is slow or unavailable.
How to keep the rules current
Competitive rules are live-service settings, not permanent game mechanics. Before organizing a ranked session:
- Open the current client and select Competitive with the intended party already formed.
- Read the eligibility and RR text shown for that exact group.
- Check recent Riot patch notes when the client behavior differs from a guide or previous session.
- Record the patch and region if you are troubleshooting with friends; those details help distinguish a rule change from a temporary client problem.
Historical sources are useful for explaining why guides disagree, but only the current client can tell you whether this particular party may queue now.
