Play the Zero Escape games in release and story order: 1) Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999), 2) Virtue’s Last Reward, 3) Zero Time Dilemma. The first two are sold together in Zero Escape: The Nonary Games; Zero Time Dilemma is a separate purchase and the trilogy’s conclusion.
This sequence gives you the character introductions, reveals and context that later entries expect. Although Zero Time Dilemma presents events in a non-linear way, it was designed as the capstone rather than an entry point.

1. Start with Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999)
Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, commonly shortened to 999, is the opening chapter. It originally launched on Nintendo DS in 2009. Starting here establishes the series’ premise, terminology and initial cast before the later games build on them.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a new player, the important point is not which edition you find first but that you experience 999 before either sequel. The modern collection places this game first, making the intended starting point clear even if you have never owned the original DS release.
Why the first game matters
- It introduces the series before its sequels add further characters and conflicts.
- It provides the narrative context that later entries can assume rather than reintroduce.
- Its position as the first release makes it the least spoiler-prone entry point.
2. Continue with Virtue’s Last Reward (VLR)
Virtue’s Last Reward is the direct follow-up and the second game. Its original releases were on Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita in 2012. Play it after completing 999, not before, even if you encounter VLR on a different platform or in a standalone listing.
The sequel follows the foundation laid by the first game. Playing in sequence lets you recognize returning ideas and understand why later information is presented as a development rather than an introduction. If you are using the modern collection, simply select VLR after finishing 999.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What to know before launching VLR
You do not need to replay 999 immediately before starting VLR, but you should finish the first game rather than stopping partway through. The value of the order comes from preserving the information flow between completed entries. If you have forgotten details, consult your own notes or a spoiler-controlled recap; avoid searching for unexplained character or ending terms while you are still playing.

3. Finish with Zero Time Dilemma (ZTD)
Zero Time Dilemma is the third game and the conclusion for longtime fans. Spike Chunsoft’s product information lists June 29, 2016, as its release date and explicitly describes it as “the third game in the series.” Treat that description as a placement instruction: play it after both earlier games.
ZTD uses a non-linear presentation, which can make its chronology look like an invitation to start there. It is not. The unusual structure is part of the final game’s design, while its returning characters and accumulated context are most meaningful after 999 and VLR.
Why ZTD should not be your first game
- It is marketed as the trilogy’s conclusion, so its role assumes familiarity with the earlier entries.
- It brings back characters from both preceding games.
- Its fragmented chronology can be easier to follow when you already know the series’ established context.
What exactly is in Zero Escape: The Nonary Games?
Zero Escape: The Nonary Games is a two-game collection, not the complete trilogy. The publisher describes it as containing “Two Spine-tingling Nonary Games” and names Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Virtue’s Last Reward. The Steam listing likewise presents it as a two-game escape-room visual-novel collection.

| Purchase choice | Includes | Best use | What remains |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zero Escape: The Nonary Games | 999 and VLR | Starting the series on a current supported storefront | ZTD must be purchased separately |
| Zero Time Dilemma | The third game | Continuing after both collection entries | Nothing, once 999 and VLR are complete |
| Original hardware copies | Depends on the individual release | Collectors or players who already own DS, 3DS or Vita versions | Edition and availability depend on region and platform |
A practical buying path for new players
- Check the platform you intend to use. Search your region’s current storefront for Zero Escape: The Nonary Games. Store names, supported operating systems and inventory can change.
- Confirm that both collection entries are listed. The package should identify 999 and VLR by name. Do not assume that a listing titled only “Zero Escape” contains all three games.
- Play 999 first. Finish the first game before opening VLR so the sequel’s information arrives in the intended order.
- Play VLR second. It is the second entry, even when your storefront presents the collection as one product.
- Buy or launch ZTD separately. Look for Zero Time Dilemma as its own product after completing the collection.
- Verify regional details at checkout. Confirm language, platform compatibility, edition and availability for your country; these details are not guaranteed to be identical across storefronts.
Original releases versus modern editions
The original hardware history explains why you may see several different listings. 999 first appeared on Nintendo DS in 2009. VLR followed on Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita in 2012. Those releases are distinct from the later collection and PC or console editions listed by the publisher.
You do not need the original DS, 3DS or Vita hardware to follow the recommended sequence when a current edition is available to you. Conversely, owning an original copy does not change the order: use it for 999, then VLR, then ZTD. A remaster or collection changes presentation and platform, not the games’ place in the trilogy.
How to compare a listing before buying
| Question | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Story order | Does the product contain 999, VLR, or ZTD, and where does that title sit in the trilogy? |
| Contents | Is it the two-game The Nonary Games collection or the standalone third game? |
| Platform | Is the edition compatible with your PC or console and current operating-system requirements? |
| Release type | Is it an original hardware release, a modern edition, or the two-game collection? |
| Regional availability | Is the listing currently sold in your country, and does it provide the language and account region you need? |
How to handle the series’ non-linear storytelling
The recommended order is based on release and story role, not on trying to reconstruct every event chronologically. ZTD’s non-linear events can appear to contradict a simple timeline, but that is a reason to save it for last, not a reason to move it to the front.
Approach each game as its own completed stage. Let the game reveal information at its chosen pace, and avoid external timelines, character searches or ending explanations until you have finished the relevant entry. Search results and video thumbnails can expose names and outcomes without warning.

A spoiler-safe note-taking method
- Record questions using neutral labels, such as “door-number rule” or “identity clue,” rather than searching the exact phrase online.
- Mark the game and chapter where a question appeared so you know what information you are allowed to seek later.
- After finishing an entry, review only material that is explicitly limited to that game.
- Keep a separate page for predictions; do not overwrite them with explanations from a later entry.
Common ordering mistakes and how to fix them
Starting with Zero Time Dilemma because it looks newest
A newer release is not automatically a better introduction. ZTD is the third game and conclusion. If you have only played its opening, stop and begin with 999; the time spent restarting protects the intended progression.
Assuming The Nonary Games is the whole trilogy
The collection contains exactly the first two games. If a store page describes two games, you still need the separately sold ZTD for the conclusion.
Playing VLR before finishing 999
Pause VLR and complete 999 first. You do not need to erase a save or replay scenes you have already seen; simply return to the first game, finish it, then resume the sequel with the proper context.
Mixing original and modern editions in the wrong sequence
Different hardware does not create a different story order. A DS copy of 999 followed by a modern edition of VLR is still the correct progression, provided the titles themselves are played in sequence.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
If you already played the games out of order
You can still complete the trilogy. If you began with VLR, go back to 999 before continuing to ZTD. If you sampled ZTD first, return to 999, then VLR, and finish ZTD again after both earlier games. This will not change the release dates or the design of the games, but it gives you the intended context for a second pass.
Players who have already completed all three games do not need to replay them solely to “correct” the order. A replay can be worthwhile if you want to notice setup and callbacks with the full trilogy in mind, but it is optional rather than a requirement.
A simple completion checklist
- Entry one: complete Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999).
- Entry two: complete Virtue’s Last Reward (VLR).
- Entry three: complete Zero Time Dilemma (ZTD).
- Purchase check: remember that The Nonary Games supplies only entries one and two.
- Store check: confirm platform, edition, region and current availability before buying.
Bottom line
The right first-play path is 999 → Virtue’s Last Reward → Zero Time Dilemma. Buy Zero Escape: The Nonary Games for the first two entries, then purchase Zero Time Dilemma separately. This preserves the series’ introductions and reveals while leaving the non-linear concluding game in the position it was built to occupy.
