You do not need to read the Fables comics first, and the complete game is listed on Steam and the US PlayStation and Xbox stores. If you prefer upgraded presentation, wait for The Wolf Among Us Remastered’s scheduled digital launch on October 29, 2026. Telltale currently targets The Wolf Among Us 2 for 2027, with no specific day announced.
The practical choice is therefore simple: start the original immediately, or wait until October 29 for the remaster. Physical remaster editions are planned for Q1 2027, so waiting for a boxed copy could put your playthrough close to the sequel’s currently broad 2027 window.

What you should play first
The Wolf Among Us is a self-contained, five-episode season. Telltale’s official game page presents it as a suitable entry point to the Fables world even for players who have not read the comics: Telltale’s official game page. You can therefore begin with the game itself rather than completing any outside reading.

#1 Best Overall
- Episodic Game - All 5 Episodes Included
- Based on Fables (DC Comics/Vertigo), an award-winning comic book series by Bill Willingham.
- Play as Bigby Wolf: formerly the most feared monster among the Fables, now Sheriff of Fabletown and protector of those he used to hunt. He must restrain the beast within if he is to earn the trust of those around him.
- The characters of myth, lore and legend are real, and exist in our world. Your choices matter and will change and define the story you experience.
- Episodic Game - All 5 Episodes Included
You do not have to own both editions. The remaster is an alternative presentation of the same first-game story, not a required bridge product. If you finish the original now, you will have covered the announced narrative setup even if you later decide to revisit it in the remaster.
The five episodes and the correct order
The season is designed as one continuous story. Play the episodes in this order:
| Order | Episode | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Faith | Start here; it is the opening episode. |
| 2 | Smoke and Mirrors | Continue immediately after episode one. |
| 3 | A Crooked Mile | Keep the same save profile and choices. |
| 4 | In Sheep’s Clothing | Play after episode three. |
| 5 | Cry Wolf | Finish the season and its complete first-game arc. |
The five-episode structure is identified by Telltale in its 2026 announcement and is also shown in the current Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox listings. Do not treat the episode names as separate games or start with a later chapter.

One-click scans. No signup required.
When an episode ends, keep using the same game profile rather than creating a fresh one for the next chapter. The point of the episodic format is that decisions and relationships carry forward. A separate replay profile can be useful later, but it should not replace the save you want to use for your first run.
Do you need to read the Fables comics?
No. The game is written to introduce its setting and characters to newcomers. The comics are optional companion reading for anyone who wants more of the broader world, not a prerequisite for understanding the game’s plot or choices.
If you already enjoy the comics, you may recognize the setting and some characters, but the game’s five-episode season remains the essential material for the sequel’s immediate continuity. Reading order, collected-edition availability, and retailer stock are not required to begin playing.
A sensible approach is to play first and treat the comics as optional follow-up reading. That avoids turning preparation into a second project and lets the game establish its own version of Fabletown, its rules, and its cast. Nothing in Telltale’s guidance says that a particular volume or collected edition must be read before starting.

Your two sensible routes
| Route | When you can start | Presentation and extras | Format information | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original game | Now, subject to local storefront availability | The existing release and its original presentation | Digital listings are available on Steam and cited US console stores | Players who want to finish before the remaster or sequel |
| Remastered game | October 29, 2026 digitally | Enhanced visuals, updated interface and accessibility features, technical improvements, Noir Mode, and more than one hour of behind-the-scenes material | PC through Steam and Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One; Xbox Series X|S play through backward compatibility | Players who can wait for the refreshed presentation |
| Physical remaster | Planned for Q1 2027 | The remaster’s feature set in a retail edition | Telltale has announced the quarter but not a retailer, preorder, price, or exact date | Collectors who specifically want a boxed copy |
The dates and platforms in the remaster rows come from Telltale’s October 8, 2026 update: The Wolf Among Us Remastered launch-date announcement. Availability can vary by country, platform account, and storefront, so confirm the local listing before purchasing.
There is no verified universal price for either edition in the cited announcements. Store prices, taxes, bundles, discounts, and regional currencies can differ, so use the amount displayed by your own account rather than relying on an old listing or an assumed launch price. A physical edition has been announced, but its retailer, preorder terms, price, and exact day have not been established.

How to play the original now
Steam on PC
- Open the official Steam listing for The Wolf Among Us: Steam store page.
- Check that the listing is available for your account and region and that it identifies the five-episode season.
- Purchase and install the game through Steam.
- Launch Faith first, then continue through Smoke and Mirrors, A Crooked Mile, In Sheep’s Clothing, and Cry Wolf.
- Keep the same profile and save data between episodes so your decisions carry through the season.
The cited Steam page lists the complete five-episode season. It does not establish a universal price or guarantee availability in every country, so the amount and purchase options shown to you are the ones that apply.
If the store presents individual episode entries as well as a season listing, verify what the product includes before checkout. The useful check is whether all five named episodes are covered. Installing only an opening chapter is not the same as owning the complete season needed for a full story run.

PlayStation
- Open the cited US PlayStation Store listing: PlayStation Store page for the original game.
- Use your local PlayStation Store if you are outside the United States; the linked page is specifically a US listing.
- Confirm the store page describes the five-episode series and that your console account can purchase it.
- Install the season and begin with Faith.
Storefront catalogs and console compatibility can change. The cited PlayStation page establishes a five-episode series, but it is not evidence that every regional store has identical pricing, editions, or compatibility.
Xbox
- Open the Xbox listing: Xbox store page.
- Switch to the store region associated with your account if you are not in the United States.
- Verify the five episode names on the listing, purchase the available edition, and install it.
- Start with Faith and play through the remaining episodes in order.
The Xbox page cited for this guide is a US listing. It confirms the episode lineup, not a worldwide guarantee of availability or identical console behavior.
What changes in the remaster
Telltale says the remaster updates the game’s visuals, interface, accessibility features, and underlying technology while adding more than an hour of behind-the-scenes material. The October 2026 launch update also identifies Noir Mode. The announcements do not provide a complete technical specification for every platform, so do not assume a particular resolution, frame rate, or performance advantage.
The stated intent is to preserve the original experience rather than rewrite it. In a PlayStation Blog interview, game director Matt Saia said: “We wanted to honor the Telltale legacy. This is a classic title, and it needed a respectful update. We avoided touching the story, the directorial choices, and the overall art style, those are sacred to us. The goal is to introduce new players to Wolf in the best way possible and create a fun experience for returning players by packing it with updated art and behind the scenes features. Ultimately, it was a love letter to fans.” Read the full interview at PlayStation.Blog.
That makes the remaster a presentation-focused way to play the same five-episode story. It is not described as a new story chapter, and no announcement says that progress from the original transfers into The Wolf Among Us 2.
Noir Mode is an announced remaster feature, but the available update does not describe every setting, filter, or platform-specific option. Likewise, “accessibility features” is an official description, not a complete list of controls or assist settings. If a particular accessibility option is essential to you, check the final platform page or launch notes for its exact implementation.
Remaster launch timing and platforms
The digital remaster is scheduled for October 29, 2026. Telltale lists these launch platforms:
Rank #3
- Includes all 5 episodes
- From the team that brought you 2012 Game of the Year, The Walking Dead. Based on the Eisner Award-winning Fables comic book series
- Now, it’s not only WHAT you choose to do that will affect your story, but WHEN you choose to do it
- A mature and gritty take on characters from fairytales, legends and folklore who have escaped into our world
- A perfect place to begin your Fables journey, even if you’ve not read the comics; this game is set before the events seen in the first issue
- PC through Steam
- PC through the Epic Games Store
- PlayStation 5
- Nintendo Switch
- Xbox One
- Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility
As of October 16, 2026, that date is upcoming, not a release that has already happened. Physical retail editions are planned for Q1 2027. Telltale has not established a specific physical-release day, retailer, preorder page, price, or regional stock in the cited announcement.
Use the digital date if your priority is playing the remaster before the sequel. Choose the physical route only if owning a disc or cartridge matters more than starting promptly; the physical window is later and less precise.
Platform wording matters here. PlayStation 5 and Xbox One are named directly, while Xbox Series X|S access is described through backward compatibility. That is different from a separately announced native Series X|S release. On PC, both Steam and Epic Games Store are named for digital distribution. Nintendo Switch is included in the announced digital platform list.
How to decide between playing now and waiting
Play the original now when timing matters most
- You want the complete story before any 2027 sequel release.
- You already have access to a listed storefront and do not need upgraded visuals.
- You would rather avoid waiting for an announced date that could change.
- You want time to replay your choices or revisit the season after finishing it.
The original is the only route available immediately from the cited listings. It gives you the five episodes that establish the story the sequel follows.
Playing now also separates your preparation from the remaster’s launch schedule. You can finish the first season, let its ending settle, and then decide later whether the remaster’s updated art, Noir Mode, interface work, or bonus material is worth a second run.
Wait for the digital remaster when presentation matters most
- You are comfortable waiting until October 29, 2026.
- You want updated visuals, interface and accessibility work, technical improvements, Noir Mode, and the bonus material.
- You plan to play on a listed remaster platform, especially PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, or PC.
- You would prefer your first playthrough to be the refreshed edition.
The remaster is a sensible wait because its announced changes target presentation and supplemental content while preserving the original story and directorial choices.
Waiting is also reasonable if you do not want to buy the original and then discover that you would rather experience the updated edition. The trade-off is that October 29 is a scheduled date, not a guarantee that every region will display identical storefront information at the same moment.
Wait for physical only when collecting is the priority
Physical editions are planned for Q1 2027, but the announcement supplies no exact day or purchasing details. That route may place your playthrough near the sequel’s broad 2027 target, so it is the least predictable choice for someone whose main goal is story preparation.
Do not treat “Q1 2027” as a preorder date or as proof that a particular retailer already has stock. Until Telltale names retailers and editions, the safe expectation is simply that a boxed release is planned sometime between January and March 2027.

A spoiler-light preparation plan for The Wolf Among Us 2
- Choose either the original now or the digital remaster on October 29.
- Complete all five episodes in order rather than stopping after the opening chapter.
- Keep your save profile intact until you finish Cry Wolf, even if you replay individual scenes.
- Note the choices you made if you want to discuss or recreate your playthrough later; no official announcement currently promises save import into the sequel.
- Check Telltale’s release updates before buying a sequel edition, because the current target is 2027 without a specific day.
Telltale’s June 15, 2026 announcement says the sequel is set five months after the original. Read that announcement at Telltale’s “The Big Bad Wolf Returns!” update. The five-month interval means the first game is the relevant narrative lead-in, but it does not create a requirement to read external material or purchase a particular edition.
There is also no stated requirement to finish the remaster specifically. A completed original-season save is not described as a condition for launching or understanding the sequel, and no save-import system has been announced. Keep your notes for your own continuity and replay decisions, not because Telltale has promised a transfer feature.

Before you commit to a purchase, check four details on the store page shown for your account:
- Region: The PlayStation and Xbox links cited here are US pages. A local store may show a different edition or availability status.
- Episode coverage: Confirm that the product includes all five named episodes rather than an isolated episode listing.
- Platform: For the remaster, match your device to Telltale’s announced platform list; Xbox Series X|S access is described through backward compatibility.
- Release status: The remaster’s digital date is October 29, 2026, while physical copies are planned for Q1 2027.
Do not rely on an old product page, an unofficial key listing, or a search snippet when the official storefront shows a different status. The links above are useful starting points, but the regional page attached to your account controls what you can actually buy and download.

Common mistakes to avoid
Waiting for comics before starting
The comics are optional. Delaying the game for a complete comics reading plan adds preparation that Telltale does not require.
Starting with a later episode
Because the season is episodic, begin with Faith. The listed order is the narrative order and keeps decisions and reveals coherent.
Assuming the remaster is already playable
On October 16, 2026, the announced digital launch is still ahead on October 29. Physical retail editions are later, in Q1 2027.
Assuming a sequel date or save-transfer feature exists
Telltale has announced 2027 for The Wolf Among Us 2 and described its five-month-after setting, but no specific day or save-import requirement is established in the cited updates.
