The Outlast Trials supports solo play and co-op parties of up to four. In a group, there are no fixed classes to assign: split the work as the Trial unfolds, communicate threats and useful items, and regroup when someone needs help. A Syringe can revive a fallen teammate, while Rigs such as Blind or Heal can help with particular situations.
How to start a co-op session

For cross-platform friends, Red Barrels’ March 5, 2024 release announcement said cross-play was supported and directed players to share their Outlast ID from the Social Menu. That is the connection flow documented in that announcement; platform features and menus can change. Ordinary co-op does not require a permanent healer, tank, or objective runner. Treat jobs as temporary assignments that can change when the team’s needs change. One player might make progress on the next objective while another watches the approach and calls out nearby danger. If a teammate falls, someone can look for a Syringe and work toward a safer revive, while another player draws attention away or interrupts a threat if their Rig allows it. These are practical ways to divide the work, not mandatory roles prescribed by the game.

- Call out useful information plainly: “Syringe here,” “enemy by the doorway,” “hold the objective while I revive,” or “regroup at the next safe room.”
- Share the immediate work rather than having everyone search or interact with the same thing.
- Swap assignments when a player is down, danger moves, or the current objective changes.
These are suggested callouts, not verified commands or a promise that the game has a particular ping or quick-chat feature.
Revive a fallen teammate safely
Epic Games Store’s guide says co-op teammates can revive a fallen player with a Syringe found in glass cases. It also describes Blind as useful for interrupting a nearby threat during a revive. The guide does not establish exact interaction timing, syringe limits, or exceptions across every mode, so focus on finding the item and creating a safer opportunity rather than relying on an assumed timer or stock rule. - Tell the team where the fallen player is and whether danger is nearby.
- Look for a Syringe in a glass case; have another player cover or distract if they can.
- Use Blind to interrupt a nearby threat when that is useful, then revive when the area gives you an opportunity.
- After the revive, regroup and reassess the objective and route rather than splitting up automatically.
Red Barrels’ March 2024 version 1.0 notes also listed a Self Revive Amp that resurrected a player after death once per Trial. That is a feature documented in those dated notes, not a substitute for the co-op Syringe revive or a guarantee of current availability and mode eligibility. Red Barrels’ version 1.0 release notes.

Choose a Rig for the situation
Epic Games Store’s guide describes four Rigs. Consider what the group needs now, rather than treating any one choice as the best loadout for every Trial. These are functional descriptions, not a ranking of current balance.

- Survive a different environment and monster each time you play.
- Use whatever you can find to outwit the monsters and escape the ship.
- Stay alive or start all over again. Good Luck. Start running.
- Hide, distract and run, but be careful not to fall into the numerous traps.

Maps and broad objectives can be familiar between runs while practical details vary: routes, locked doors, items, enemy placements, and some objective elements may change. Epic Games Store gives “Kill the Snitch” as an example: the broad task remains, but key symbols and locations can differ. In “Grind the Bad Apples,” the objective remains recognizable while details such as valves or games may vary. Learn what the team must accomplish, but search and navigate according to what this run actually presents instead of following a memorized route. Epic Games Store’s guide.
Do not confuse co-op jobs with Invasion roles
In ordinary co-op, “roles” means flexible teamwork suggestions. Red Barrels’ October 21, 2025 Invasion update describes a separate mode with formal sides: Reagents complete a Trial while facing possible player Imposters, and Imposters infiltrate to try to kill all Reagents before they finish. The update says Invasion supports solo play and groups of two, three, or four. Those mode roles are distinct from assigning one teammate to watch a doorway or help with a revive in a standard co-op run. Red Barrels’ October 21, 2025 Invasion update.
