What “original Ultima” means in this guide
“Ultima” can refer to the numbered mainline games, but Electronic Arts’ official catalog also includes the Underworld titles. The practical routes below concentrate on the releases for which current compatibility information is established: Ultima 1+2+3, Ultima IV, Ultima VI, Ultima VII and Ultima VIII. Underworld and other spin-offs may require a title-specific DOSBox configuration; do not assume that a package or engine listed here supports every Ultima release.
There are also two meanings of “original.” You may want the original game content and behavior, or you may want the exact original executable, release and configuration. A compatibility engine can preserve the plot, data and graphics while still changing timing, rendering, input or bug behavior. Decide which goal matters before installing.

Before installing: files, editions and backups
Use game files you are entitled to use
Compatibility software is not a substitute for the game. Exult and ScummVM require the relevant original data, and standalone DOSBox requires DOS game files. An authorized package is the simplest option because the game files and compatibility layer are distributed together. If you use an old physical release, copy its contents to a folder you control rather than repeatedly running from aging media.
Keep each title in its own folder
Do not mix files from different Ultima releases. Create a separate folder for each game, such as Ultima1, Ultima4 or Ultima7. This makes it easier to identify the correct data files in Exult or ScummVM and prevents a launcher from seeing incompatible files.
Preserve the untouched files
Make a backup of the original game directory before changing configuration files, adding patches or selecting enhanced modes. If a modern engine produces unexpected behavior, you can return to the original files and test one change at a time.

Install Ultima 1+2+3

Know about the Ultima II character-creation fix
In its 20 March 2025 changelog, GOG says the Ultima 1+2+3 package added an Ultima II player-data erase option to address a blank-disk character-creation issue. If character creation produces that symptom, use the package’s added erase option and create the player data again. Do not treat the fix as evidence that every Ultima II release has the same problem; it is a documented change to that package.

Install Ultima VII: The Complete Edition
- Download the authorized Ultima VII package using its standard or offline installer.
- Complete the installation and launch the supplied shortcut. The listing identifies DOSBox as the engine, so the package should provide the DOS environment and launch configuration.
- Test both the main game and any included components before copying in external files. Keep the installed directory intact until you know the package starts correctly.
- If you are on Windows 10 or Windows 11, the package’s 13 November 2024 changelog reports stability validation and compatibility verification for those systems. That statement applies to this package and does not guarantee identical results on every PC.
When the packaged route is the wrong choice
Use another route if you want to run a different original release, need macOS support, want to inspect or replace game data, or are trying a title not covered by the cited packages. A bundled DOSBox setup is convenient, but it is not a universal installer for the Ultima catalog.
Route 2: run Ultima VII with Exult
Exult is the most direct modern-engine alternative for Ultima VII. The project describes it as recreating Ultima VII for modern operating systems “using the game’s original plot, data, and graphics files.” Windows and macOS downloads are listed. You still need a compatible copy of the original Ultima VII data; installing Exult alone does not provide the game.
Prepare the data directory
- Install or unpack your legitimate Ultima VII files into a dedicated directory. Keep the original directory structure and filenames.
- Download the Exult build for your operating system from the project’s official release page.
- Install Exult, then point it to the directory containing the Ultima VII data when prompted. If the launcher asks separately for the base game and an expansion, select the matching directories rather than one folder containing unrelated games.
- Start Ultima VII from Exult and confirm that the title screen, maps, graphics and saved games appear correctly.
- Only after the original data loads should you experiment with Exult’s configuration or optional enhancements.
Understand what Exult preserves
Exult preserves the original game’s plot, data and graphics, but it is a community engine rather than the original executable. That distinction matters if you are comparing timing, rendering or edge-case behavior with a historical release. For a faithful playthrough of the story and assets on a current operating system, Exult is the purpose-built option; for executable-level reproduction, use a DOSBox setup containing the exact release you own.
Antivirus warnings in the Windows 1.12.1-1 release
On 27 March 2026, Exult announced a Windows 1.12.1-1 re-release after an installer helper DLL was flagged by some antivirus products. The project said those detections were false positives. If your security software warns about that specific helper, verify that you downloaded the release from the official Exult project and check the project’s current release notice before deciding whether to proceed. Do not disable security software indiscriminately or install a file from an unverified mirror.
Route 3: use ScummVM for Ultima IV, VI and VIII
ScummVM’s 2026.2.0 compatibility chart rates Ultima IV, Ultima VI and Ultima VIII as “Good.” The rating is versioned and applies to the chart’s listed scope, including its stated English-version coverage. ScummVM does not include the games, so you must provide a compatible copy.

Add a supported game
- Install the current ScummVM release that corresponds to the compatibility information you are using.
- Place the files for one supported Ultima game in a separate directory. Do not point ScummVM at a parent folder containing several unrelated releases.
- Open ScummVM and choose Add Game.
- Browse to the directory containing the game’s data files. ScummVM should identify the title if the files and release match its supported detection rules.
- Review the detected title, language and version before saving it to the launcher.
- Launch the game and test loading and saving. If ScummVM cannot detect it, re-check the release and directory rather than copying random files from another version.
Ultima IV and VI: original versus enhanced modes
ScummVM’s archive explains that its Ultima IV implementation builds on xu4 work and its Ultima VI implementation builds on Nuvie work. It describes original and enhanced modes for both games. Choose original mode when you want the closest behavior to the classic presentation; choose enhanced mode when you deliberately want the engine’s modern improvements. Record the mode you selected so that later troubleshooting is reproducible.

Ultima VIII
The 2026.2.0 chart’s “Good” rating establishes support for Ultima VIII, but it does not mean every regional release, language or modified copy is interchangeable. Use the exact game files covered by the chart and retain a backup of the untouched directory.
Route 4: configure standalone DOSBox
Standalone DOSBox is the flexible option when you own legal DOS files but do not have a ready-made package. DOSBox emulates an x86 computer with DOS; it does not convert the game into a native modern application. The DOSBox site lists version 0.74-3, announced on 26 June 2019 as a security release for DOSBox 0.74.
Basic setup pattern
- Install DOSBox and create a separate host folder for the game, for example
C:GamesUltima4. - Copy the legally obtained DOS game files into that folder. Keep the game’s original subdirectories.
- Start DOSBox and mount the host folder as a DOS drive. A typical command is
mount c C:GamesUltima4; replace the path with your actual folder. - Switch to the mounted drive with
c:. - List the directory with
dir, locate the game’s documented executable or batch file, and run it by typing its filename. - Adjust video, sound, CPU-cycle and input settings only when the game requires it. There is no single configuration that is correct for every Ultima release.
- Once the game works, save the commands in DOSBox’s configuration so you do not have to type them at every launch. Keep a copy of the original configuration before making changes.
The exact executable name, sound settings and startup commands vary by release. Do not copy a command intended for Ultima IV into an Ultima VII directory, and do not assume that a configuration documented for a bundled package matches a separately obtained release.

How to preserve an original-style experience
Choose the engine deliberately
Use DOSBox when matching a particular DOS executable and release is your priority. Use Exult when you want Ultima VII’s original plot, data and graphics through a modern operating-system engine. Use ScummVM’s original mode for Ultima IV or VI when you want to avoid its enhanced presentation. None of these choices should be described as bit-for-bit identical without testing the exact release and configuration.

Keep enhancements reversible
Make one change at a time and retain the untouched game directory. If enhanced mode, a display setting or an engine update changes the way a scene behaves, you can return to the original files and reproduce the earlier configuration.
Do not mix save data casually
Save formats can depend on the engine and release. Keep saves with the installation that created them, and make a backup before switching between DOSBox, Exult and ScummVM. If a save is not recognized after a switch, return to the previous engine rather than overwriting the backup.
Troubleshooting common failures
The launcher starts, then closes
For a bundled package, reinstall or verify that the package’s own files remain together. For DOSBox, confirm that you mounted the folder containing the executable and that you are launching the correct filename. For Exult or ScummVM, confirm that the engine can see the original data directory.
ScummVM cannot detect the game
ScummVM does not supply game files. Check that you selected the directory containing the required data, that files are from a supported release, and that the language matches the 2026.2.0 chart’s documented scope. Do not solve detection errors by mixing files from multiple editions.

Exult needs the original Ultima VII data. Recheck the directory you selected, preserve the original folder structure, and verify that you installed the correct game rather than an unrelated Ultima package.
Ultima II character creation produces a blank disk
If you are using the cited Ultima 1+2+3 package, use the player-data erase option added in its 20 March 2025 changelog, then recreate the data. If you are using another release, that package-specific fix may not exist.
Windows security software flags Exult
The Exult project said some antivirus products falsely flagged an installer helper DLL in the Windows 1.12.1-1 re-release announced on 27 March 2026. Confirm the release source and consult the project’s current notice. Never bypass a warning for an unverified download.
The game works on one Windows PC but not another
The GOG notes establish verification for Windows 10 and Windows 11 for the two cited packages, not universal compatibility with every hardware configuration, display driver or future Windows build. Recheck the package version, use its supplied launcher, and avoid replacing bundled files with components from another release.

- Want the least setup? Choose the authorized Ultima 1+2+3 or Ultima VII package covered by the documented DOSBox setup.
- Want Ultima VII on Windows or macOS through a modern engine? Choose Exult and provide the original game data.
- Want Ultima IV, VI or VIII? Check ScummVM 2026.2.0, confirm the supported language and release, and supply your own files.
- Need a specific old executable or an uncovered title? Use standalone DOSBox and configure that release separately.
- Care about historical behavior? Prefer the exact original files and DOSBox, or select ScummVM’s original mode for IV and VI.

What to expect from future updates
Compatibility information is versioned. ScummVM’s “Good” ratings refer to its 2026.2.0 chart, Exult’s installer behavior can change between releases, and a storefront’s compatibility notes apply to the edition listed there. Before troubleshooting a newly installed copy, check the engine or package version and read its current release notes. That prevents you from applying an old workaround to a changed build.
