How to play the original N64 Ocarina of Time legally on modern consoles

The current official way to play the original Nintendo 64 version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on a modern console is Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. It works on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. You need the Expansion Pack tier; the standard Nintendo Switch Online membership does not include Nintendo 64 games.

The short answer

Use a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, install the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics application, and start Ocarina of Time from its catalogue. Nintendo lists the game in the official Nintendo 64 catalogue and describes the software as “reproductions of the original games for use on Nintendo Switch.” See Nintendo’s Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online catalogue and its membership explanation.

This is the legal, currently supported modern-console route documented by Nintendo as of October 16, 2026. It is not an unofficial ROM, and it is not a newly built remake. It is Nintendo’s official reproduction of the N64 release delivered through a subscription service.

What you need before you start

A compatible console

You need a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 connected to the internet for setup. Nintendo’s Expansion Pack information covers the service on both console generations; availability can still depend on the Nintendo Account region and the catalogue offered there. Check Nintendo’s regional service page if the catalogue does not appear on your console: Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

The correct membership tier

The Nintendo 64 library is part of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The ordinary Nintendo Switch Online tier is not enough to unlock N64 Classics. Nintendo states this distinction in its support documentation: Nintendo Switch Online membership options.

When you subscribe, choose the Expansion Pack option rather than the base plan. The sources used here do not establish one worldwide price: Nintendo prices memberships by country, currency, account region and plan length. Rather than rely on an outdated figure, check the price displayed in your eShop or Nintendo Account before confirming.

An internet connection for installation and checks

Connect the console to the internet while setting up the service and downloading the Nintendo 64 application. Nintendo’s support instructions cover downloading and launching the application here: Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online support.

A controller that suits N64 games

You can start the game with the controller you already use with your Switch. If you want a layout closer to the original hardware, Nintendo has also offered an N64-style controller for Switch in some markets and periods, but availability is not established universally by the sources cited here. Controller availability does not change the legal status of the software or the Expansion Pack requirement.

Step-by-step: start Ocarina of Time on Switch

  1. Connect your Switch or Switch 2 to the internet. Complete the console’s normal network setup before opening the eShop or Nintendo Switch Online application.
  2. Open the Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Switch Online membership screen. Select Nintendo Switch Online and choose the Expansion Pack tier. Do not select only the standard membership if your goal is the N64 catalogue.
  3. Complete the membership purchase or activation. The exact price and available plan lengths are regional. Confirm the account and region shown on your console before paying.
  4. Open the Nintendo Switch Online area on the console. Find the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics application. Nintendo’s support page identifies the application as the place to access the N64 catalogue: Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online instructions.
  5. Download and install the application. Wait for the download to finish. If the application is missing, first verify that the console is online and that the signed-in account has an active Expansion Pack membership.
  6. Launch Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics. Select The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time from the catalogue and start the game. Nintendo’s catalogue lists the N64 release with a release date of October 26, 2021, for the Nintendo Switch service: official catalogue listing.

The game is delivered inside the Nintendo 64 application rather than as a separate modern remake. If you see the catalogue application but not the game, check membership status and the region of the Nintendo Account before reinstalling anything.

Is this the original N64 game or a remake?

Nintendo calls the catalogue games “reproductions of the original games for use on Nintendo Switch.” That wording matters. The Switch service is intended to reproduce the N64 release, not to replace it with a new remake made for Switch hardware. Nintendo’s catalogue page is the primary description of what is being supplied: Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online.

In practical terms, you are playing Nintendo’s official N64 software release through Nintendo’s Switch application. It is therefore different from three other things:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • An unofficial ROM: a file obtained from an unauthorized source is not the Nintendo service described here.
  • A fan port or independent emulator: those are separate software projects and are not required for the official route.
  • A full remake: the Expansion Pack catalogue entry is the reproduced N64 game, not a rebuilt version with redesigned graphics, levels or mechanics.

The service’s exact presentation, controller mapping and display behavior are determined by Nintendo’s application. Avoid assuming that settings or enhancements found in an unofficial emulator are part of the official release.

Switch and Switch 2: what changes?

Nintendo documents Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The legal route and membership requirement are the same: use the Nintendo 64 Classics application with an active Expansion Pack membership.

Question Nintendo Switch Nintendo Switch 2
Can the Expansion Pack service be used? Yes, according to Nintendo’s service information. Yes, according to Nintendo’s service information.

Is Ocarina of Time listed in the N64 catalogue? Yes, in Nintendo’s catalogue. The service catalogue is the same Nintendo 64 Classics route; Nintendo’s cited pages do not state a separate game purchase.
Is an internet connection needed? Internet is needed for setup and periodic checks. Internet is needed for setup and periodic checks.

Playing when you are offline

Offline access is not unlimited. Nintendo’s FAQ says N64 Classics applications can be used for up to seven days without an internet connection before an online check is needed: Nintendo Switch Online FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That seven-day period is an authentication window, not a promise that every account will remain playable indefinitely without connecting. Before a trip or a period without reliable internet:

  • Launch the Nintendo 64 application while the membership is active.
  • Confirm that Ocarina of Time starts normally.
  • Take the console online at least once within each seven-day window if you expect to keep playing.
  • Remember that changing membership status, account details or console setup can require another online verification.

If the application asks for an online check, connect the console to the internet and reopen Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics. An internet check does not convert the service into an owned, permanent copy; access remains tied to the active membership and Nintendo’s service rules.

Legal options compared

There are several ways people may already have played the game, but they do not all provide a current purchase path on a modern console. The table separates the supported subscription route from ownership situations and closed storefronts.

Route Current-console compatibility Access model Internet or storefront status What is established
Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics on Switch Nintendo Switch Active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership Internet setup and periodic checks; up to seven days between checks according to Nintendo’s FAQ Official catalogue entry for Ocarina of Time
Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics on Switch 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership Internet setup and periodic checks Nintendo documents Expansion Pack service support for Switch 2; the cited pages do not provide a separate game purchase
Original Nintendo 64 cartridge Original Nintendo 64 hardware, not a documented transfer into the Switch service Owned physical copy No eShop subscription check, but requires the original console and cartridge Existing lawful ownership is a different case from obtaining the Switch catalogue
Existing Wii U or Nintendo 3DS digital copy Those original storefront platforms Previously purchased copy The eShops no longer accept new purchases Nintendo has not documented a transfer method into the Switch service in the cited material

The comparison does not establish a worldwide price for any route. It also does not claim that an original cartridge can be uploaded, registered or converted into a Switch entitlement; Nintendo’s cited support pages do not describe such a process.

Can you still buy it on Wii U or Nintendo 3DS?

No. Nintendo states that new purchases in the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops ended on March 27, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. That means those stores should not be presented as current buying instructions: Nintendo’s Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShop notice.

This closure does not erase every existing ownership situation. Someone who lawfully purchased a digital copy before the closure may have a different access position from someone trying to buy the game now, and an original N64 cartridge remains a physical ownership case. The available Nintendo documentation does not describe moving either type of copy into the Nintendo Switch Online catalogue.

Troubleshooting the most common problems

The game or N64 application is missing

  1. Confirm that the console is connected to the internet.
  2. Check that the account used on the console has Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, not only the standard tier.
  3. Open the Nintendo Switch Online area again and look for Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics.
  4. Check the Nintendo Account region if the catalogue or membership screen differs from Nintendo’s regional documentation.
  5. Restart the console after the membership is activated, then revisit the application listing.

The decisive checks are membership tier and catalogue availability. The base Nintendo Switch Online plan does not unlock N64 games.

The application worked before but now requests the internet

That behavior is consistent with Nintendo’s seven-day offline-check window. Connect the console online, allow the membership check to complete, and launch the application again. If it still fails, verify that the Expansion Pack membership is active on the account being used.

You bought an old copy and want it on Switch

Do not assume that a cartridge or an old Wii U or Nintendo 3DS purchase creates a Switch entitlement. Nintendo’s cited material does not document a transfer or import process. The documented modern-console method is to use the Nintendo 64 Classics application through Expansion Pack.

You expected a remake or modern graphics

Return to Nintendo’s catalogue description: these are reproductions of the original games for Switch. The service is not advertised in the cited material as a remake, and no guaranteed Switch 2 visual upgrade is stated there.

A practical decision guide

You want to play on a current console today

Choose Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, install Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics, and use the catalogue entry for Ocarina of Time. This is the only current modern-console route established by the cited Nintendo pages.

You already own the N64 cartridge

Keep using the cartridge with compatible original hardware if you want that ownership model. If you want to play on Switch or Switch 2, the Nintendo-documented route is still the Expansion Pack catalogue; the sources do not describe a cartridge-to-Switch transfer.

You purchased the game on Wii U or Nintendo 3DS years ago

Do not plan a new purchase through those eShops. New purchases ended in 2023. Existing lawful access is separate from buying the Switch version, and no transfer mechanism is documented in the cited Nintendo support pages.

You need long periods without internet

The Expansion Pack application may work offline for up to seven days before Nintendo requires an online check. If you cannot connect within that window, the subscription route may not fit your circumstances; plan to reconnect before the check expires.
