How to Play the Original Mortal Kombat Arcade Games at Home

For most players, start with Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection. It is the current official collection designed for modern consoles and PC, combining arcade classics with selected home versions. Atari lists it for Xbox, Steam, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, while PlayStation and Xbox identify October 30, 2025 as the release date. Check your local store page for the edition and availability in your region before buying.

If what you really want is a full-size cabinet with arcade-style controls, an Arcade1Up Mortal Kombat machine is the alternative. It costs considerably more, occupies permanent floor space and has changing stock or planned-release dates. An older Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection exists for Windows PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but that rating record does not prove that it is still sold or works on current hardware.

The three practical ways to play at home

“Original” can mean the original arcade games, a home port from the same era, or a physical machine that feels like an arcade. Those are different purchases. Use this comparison before looking at individual editions.

Why Legacy Kollection is the starting point for most people

Atari describes Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection as a collection of arcade classics and selected home versions. Its presentation is broader than a single-game rerelease: the publisher mentions versions associated with Super NES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear and Sega 32X, although the product page does not provide a complete per-game, per-platform matrix. Do not assume that every title appears on every system or that every regional edition contains identical versions.

  • Multiple Iconic Editions: Experience the legendary origins of Mortal Kombat with the iconic arcade classics along with well loved home versions for Super NES and Sega Genesis. Dive deeper with rare and fan-favorite releases across Game Boy, Game Gear, Sega 32X, Game Boy Advance and more.
  • Interactive Documentary: Deep behind-the-scenes content chronicles the history of the franchise, featuring exclusive new interviews with original MK developers Ed Boon, John Tobias, Dan Forden, John Vogel, and dozens more.
  • Online Play: Engage in online battles enhanced by rollback netcode— engineered to preserve the precision of every attack, even with players across vast distances.
  • The Full Story: Detailed character histories and timelines trace the epic narrative of Earthrealm, Outworld, and Edenia through the arcade era.
  • No More Secrets: At the touch of a button, unlock all secret characters, change game settings, and access the buried developer menus to play the games your way.

The collection also advertises online play using rollback netcode, game settings and unlock features, plus an interactive documentary with original developer interviews. Those features make it more suitable for a modern player than tracking down an old console and cartridge, but they do not replace checking the actual store description for your platform.

Supported platforms and release information

Atari’s product page lists Xbox, Steam, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch storefronts. The PlayStation listing identifies PS4 and PS5 and gives October 30, 2025 as the release date. The Xbox listing identifies Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, lists local and online multiplayer, names Atari as publisher and Digital Eclipse as developer, and also gives October 30, 2025 as the release date.

Those listings establish platform families, not universal cross-generation or cross-region entitlements. Open the store page for the exact device you own. A PS4 or Xbox One listing does not by itself tell you whether a particular purchase includes a native current-generation version, and a release date does not guarantee that a physical copy is in stock.

Digital and physical editions

The Atari page lists Standard, Deluxe and Kollector’s physical editions. The prices shown there were $49.99 for Standard, $69.99 for Deluxe and $149.99 for Kollector’s. The page also showed “Pre-Order: Ships Dec 2026” for the Kollector’s Edition. These are product-listing snapshots, not guaranteed prices or delivery promises; taxes, regional pricing, retailer stock and shipping can change.

  • Digital Eclipse's interactive documentary format explores how Mortal Kombat changed the way society perceived video games. By using digitized humans as player sprites in an over-the-top, martial-arts fighter, the game thrilled players, shocked critics, and laid the foundation for a franchise that has thrived for more than 30 years. Hear firsthand from the original dev team of Ed Boon, John Tobias, John Vogel, and Dan Forden, along with other exclusive interviews, rare concept art, vintage marketing materials, and archival video footage.
  • Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection also lets players explore Mortal Kombat lore, with a timeline of the original series' storyline and comprehensive character histories that offer stories, secrets, and glimpses behind the scenes at their creation.

If you only need the games, compare the digital listing on your platform first. Choose a physical edition when ownership of a disc or cartridge matters to you, when you collect special packaging, or when the physical release is the only edition containing the version or extras you want. Confirm the contents rather than inferring them from the edition name.

Step-by-step: buying and starting the collection

  1. Identify the device you will actually use: PS4/PS5, Xbox One/Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch or a Windows PC running Steam.
  2. Open that platform’s official store and search for the complete title, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection. Check the publisher and the listed release information so you do not accidentally select the older Arcade Kollection.
  3. Read the edition description. Look for the games and home versions included in your regional listing; the publisher’s general page is not a substitute for a per-title matrix.
  4. Choose digital or physical media. For a physical order, verify the seller’s stock and estimated dispatch date rather than relying on a search-result price.
  5. Install or insert the game, then open its settings before playing. Set display, audio and control options to your preference and look for any unlock or museum/documentary section.
  6. For online battles, use the platform’s multiplayer account and network connection. The collection’s advertised rollback netcode is intended to make online play more responsive, but your experience still depends on connection quality and the opponent’s connection.

When a dedicated cabinet is the better choice

A cabinet is not simply another way to buy the collection. It is furniture, a control interface and a self-contained arcade display. Choose this route if standing or sitting at a dedicated machine, using a joystick and buttons, and seeing the game in an arcade-style enclosure matter more to you than portability, low cost or easy storage.

Arcade1Up Mortal Kombat II Deluxe

The Mortal Kombat II Deluxe listing showed a $499.99 price and was marked sold out when checked. Its specification listed a 17-inch LCD and included Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Mortal Kombat 3, Mortal Kombat II and Mortal Kombat, along with other classic games. Stock status is especially important here: a product page can remain visible after inventory has disappeared.

Arcade1Up Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Supreme Series

The Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Supreme Series listing showed $699.99 and “Koming Late 2026.” It listed a 19-inch display, upgraded joystick and buttons, Wi-Fi leaderboards and online multiplayer, as well as the same four named Mortal Kombat games. “Late 2026” is planned timing, not a confirmed delivery date. Recheck the listing before paying or planning a room around it.

Cabinet checklist before ordering

  • Measure the intended room and doorway. The pages cited here do not state complete cabinet dimensions, so obtain the current specification sheet before ordering.
  • Confirm whether the listed price includes delivery, assembly or any accessories you expect.
  • Check the exact game list and whether online features require a service that could change later.
  • Verify the power requirements for your country and leave enough clearance for comfortable controls and ventilation.
  • Consider how you will move it if you relocate; a cabinet is much less flexible than a console or handheld.

What the older Arcade Kollection can—and cannot—tell you

The ESRB entry for Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection identifies Windows PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and assigns an M rating for Mature 17+ for blood and gore and violence. That is useful for identifying the older release and its content rating, but an ESRB record is not a current sales page. It does not establish that the compilation remains downloadable, that a modern Windows installation will run it, or that it works on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S or Nintendo Switch.

Consider this release only if you already own one of the listed systems or have a specific reason to maintain legacy hardware. Before buying a used copy, check the disc or digital region, required updates, controller compatibility and whether any advertised online mode still operates. If you need a straightforward purchase for current hardware, investigate Legacy Kollection first instead.

How to choose the right version of “original”

Choose the arcade-focused route when accuracy of the setting matters most

The cabinet listings explicitly center the first three numbered games and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, using a dedicated display and arcade controls. They are the clearest fit for someone whose priority is the physical arcade ritual. However, the available information does not establish input latency, image scaling, cabinet speaker quality or how closely each revision matches a particular arcade board. Those are questions to ask the seller or verify from the current manual.

Choose Legacy Kollection when breadth and convenience matter most

The modern collection is the practical choice when you want one purchase that spans arcade material and selected home versions, supports current platform families and offers online play and documentary content. Its publisher page does not expose a complete title-by-title revision list, so buyers who care about a specific regional arcade revision should confirm that detail before committing.

Choose the older compilation only for a legacy setup

The older release makes sense for an existing PS3, Xbox 360 or compatible Windows PC, especially if you already own it. It is a poor default for a new setup because its current availability and modern compatibility are not established by the rating listing.

Local multiplayer, online play and controls

Xbox’s listing explicitly includes local and online multiplayer. PlayStation describes online battles with rollback netcode, and Atari also describes online play with rollback netcode. The cabinet Supreme Series listing adds Wi-Fi leaderboards and online multiplayer. These descriptions confirm advertised modes, not a guarantee that every mode is identical across platforms or that servers will remain available indefinitely.

For local play, use the platform’s supported controllers or the cabinet’s built-in controls. If several people will play on a console, check the platform listing for the number and type of controllers required; the supplied product descriptions do not state a universal player count. For online play, update the game, sign in to the platform account and test a private or casual match before arranging a tournament. If a match feels delayed, distinguish ordinary network delay from a control or display problem by testing an offline mode.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Confusing the two Kollections

The names are similar but the products are not interchangeable. Legacy Kollection is the current collection marketed for Xbox, Steam, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. Arcade Kollection is the older release identified by the ESRB for Windows PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Read the full title, publisher and supported platform before purchasing.

Assuming every home port is included

Atari says “selected home versions” and mentions systems such as Super NES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy, Game Gear and Sega 32X. The reviewed page does not provide a complete matrix. Treat a system reference as evidence that some associated home versions are represented, not as proof that every Mortal Kombat release for that system is present.

Treating a listing price as a permanent price

The $49.99, $69.99 and $149.99 collection prices, the $499.99 Deluxe cabinet price and the $699.99 Supreme Series price are snapshots from product listings. Promotions, regional currency, taxes and shipping can alter the final amount. Save the store page you intend to use and verify the checkout total.

Planning around an unconfirmed cabinet date

“Koming Late 2026” is a planned arrival, while the Deluxe page was sold out when checked. Do not sell an existing console or schedule a renovation around either status. Wait for a current in-stock notice and a confirmed shipping estimate.

Expecting tested performance guarantees

No independent testing established input latency, image quality, display scaling or control accuracy for these products. If one of those factors determines your purchase, look for a current technical specification or a return policy that lets you evaluate the machine safely.

A simple decision checklist

  • Already own a modern console or gaming PC? Start with Legacy Kollection on that platform.
  • Want a physical arcade centerpiece? Compare the current cabinet listings, but confirm dimensions, stock, delivery and exact contents.
  • Own a PS3, Xbox 360 or older Windows setup? Investigate the older Arcade Kollection only after confirming present-day availability and compatibility.
  • Need one specific home-port version? Do not buy from the broad collection description alone; verify the title and platform in the store’s detailed contents.
  • Care most about online competition? Confirm that your platform lists online play and rollback netcode, then check account and network requirements.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
