You can play the original PlayStation Crash Team Racing on a desktop PC using a PS1 emulator such as DuckStation, your legitimate PS1 game disc, and a BIOS image dumped from your own PlayStation. DuckStation has Windows 10/11, Linux, and macOS builds, supports keyboard and game-controller input, and does not include a BIOS. The original PS1 game is separate from Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, the later remake.
What you need
- A compatible PC. DuckStation lists builds for Windows 10/11, Linux, and macOS in its project README.
- The emulator. DuckStation is a desktop PlayStation emulator. It is free software; you do not need to buy the emulator.
- A PS1 BIOS image from your own PlayStation. DuckStation requires a PS1 or PS2 BIOS image to start and says users should dump it from their own console. The project does not bundle one.
- Your original PS1 copy of Crash Team Racing. You can try to play from the physical disc if your PC has a compatible optical drive, or consider making a disc image from your own copy, subject to the legal limits discussed below.
- Input equipment. A keyboard is supported, so a controller is optional. If you prefer one, use a game controller compatible with your PC.
These are separate requirements: owning the disc does not provide the emulator BIOS, and having a BIOS does not provide the game. DuckStation documents its BIOS, input, and disc requirements in the project README.

Think of the setup as three separate pieces: the program that emulates the console, the BIOS that DuckStation needs to start and run games, and the game media containing Crash Team Racing. A missing piece cannot be substituted by another one. For example, a game disc does not include the BIOS image required by DuckStation, and a BIOS does not grant access to the game itself.
You do not need to purchase DuckStation. The likely optional hardware costs depend on what you already own: a PC-compatible controller if you want gamepad controls, or an external USB optical drive if your computer lacks a suitable built-in drive and you want to use the disc directly. No particular brand or model is established here, so check compatibility with your computer before buying. Neither accessory is required if your existing equipment works and you are comfortable using a keyboard.

Set up DuckStation and start the game
The broad setup is straightforward, but the exact installation screens and menu labels can vary between operating systems and DuckStation releases. Follow the project’s current documentation rather than instructions for an unrelated emulator version.
- Download DuckStation from the project. Choose the build for your operating system from the project’s official release location linked through the README. Avoid unrelated download mirrors.
- Dump a BIOS from your own PlayStation. DuckStation requires a PS1 or PS2 BIOS image and directs users to obtain it from their own console. Do not substitute a BIOS downloaded from an unofficial site.
- Make the BIOS available to DuckStation. Use the emulator’s setup or configuration process to point it to the BIOS image. The README establishes the requirement, but does not provide one universal sequence of menu names for all builds.
- Choose how to provide the game. Insert the original PS1 disc and try DuckStation’s documented disc-play route, or use a disc image made from your own copy if that is lawful where you live. A desktop without an optical drive may need an external USB optical drive for the physical-disc route.
- Configure your controls. Set up keyboard input or connect and configure a compatible PC game controller in DuckStation. A controller is a preference, not a prerequisite.
- Start the game and check the result. If the emulator does not recognize the disc or image, check that your drive can read it, that the media is in usable condition, and that DuckStation can access the BIOS. The project notes that drive capabilities matter for disc use and that a region mismatch can cause compatibility issues.
Keep the order of dependencies in mind when diagnosing a failed launch. First confirm that DuckStation itself is installed from the project’s official release location and is the build for your operating system. Then check that the BIOS image is present and accessible. Only after that, check whether DuckStation can read the game disc or image. This is more useful than repeatedly changing input settings when the emulator has not yet started the game.
For the physical-disc route, insert your disc and use DuckStation’s documented disc-play functionality. If the PC has no internal optical drive, an external USB optical drive is one possible route, but its presence alone does not guarantee that DuckStation will be able to read a particular disc. The drive must be accessible to the computer, and the game disc must be readable. If the disc is not recognized, testing the drive with other media can help separate a drive-access issue from a problem with this specific disc; it does not, by itself, establish that the game will work.

That convenience does not answer the legal question. Before making or using a copy, consider the law and license terms that apply where you live and how the copy would be made. Do not treat ownership of the disc as blanket permission to download an image or use any particular copying method.
DuckStation supports keyboard and game-controller input, so decide what is comfortable rather than buying a controller by default. A controller is an optional PC accessory, not a technical requirement established for this setup. Connect a compatible controller and configure it in DuckStation if you prefer that style of input; otherwise, use the emulator’s keyboard input configuration. If controls do not respond, check that the device is available to the PC and assigned in the emulator before concluding that the game media or BIOS is at fault.
Disc, disc image, or original PlayStation?
The best route depends on whether you value using the physical disc, avoiding optical-drive setup, or playing on original hardware. DuckStation documents direct disc play, but that does not mean every PC drive will read every disc successfully.

A historical release listing records regional PS1 versions of CTR: Crash Team Racing, including the US release with product ID SCUS-94426. What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Use the comparison this way: choose direct-disc emulation if you want to use your physical copy and already have a drive DuckStation can access; consider a personal image if you have a lawful way to make one and want to avoid depending on a disc drive; choose original PlayStation hardware if you would rather skip the emulator and have a working console available. The image route may be convenient, but it is not a legal shortcut. The original-hardware route avoids configuring DuckStation, but it does not turn the PC into the platform playing the game.
There is no need to acquire every item in the list before trying the simplest route available to you. If you have the disc, a compatible drive, and the required BIOS from your console, begin with direct disc play. If you lack an optical drive, decide whether an external drive is worthwhile or whether another lawful route is appropriate. If you have no controller, start with the supported keyboard input. This keeps optional purchases separate from the core software and media requirements.
What counts as a legitimate copy—and what the law does not settle
For this setup, use a legitimate copy of the original PS1 game and obtain the BIOS from your own PlayStation. Do not treat disc ownership as automatic permission to download a game image or BIOS from the internet, or as proof that any method of making a personal backup is allowed.
The legal answer can depend on your country, applicable copyright exceptions, anti-circumvention rules, license terms, and the method used to make or use a copy. Sony’s US software EULA provides license context for PlayStation software, but it is not a universal ruling on personal copying rights. If the legality of making or using a disc image matters to your decision, check the rules that apply in your jurisdiction rather than assuming that owning the disc settles the question.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the distinction between the software license and local law in view. A US EULA is not a ruling for every country, and an explanation of the emulator’s technical requirements is not legal advice. Copyright exceptions, anti-circumvention rules, and contract terms can differ by jurisdiction and by the method used. The safe, accurate takeaway is limited: use a legitimate game copy and your own console’s BIOS, do not rely on unofficial download sites, and verify the rules that apply to any backup method you are considering.

- This mini Console is approximately 45% smaller than the original PlayStation
- Includes two wired controllers, a virtual memory card and an HDMI cable
This also means that the phrase “I own the disc” should not be used as a universal answer to whether a disc image can be made, downloaded, or used. The method matters, and the relevant rules differ. If you are unsure, the direct-disc route may avoid the separate question of creating an image, though you still need a PC drive that can read the disc and the BIOS DuckStation requires. Playing on the original PlayStation is another option if you want to avoid emulator setup.
Original PS1 game versus Nitro-Fueled
This guide is about the original PS1 Crash Team Racing, not Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. Activision describes Nitro-Fueled as a remake, and its game page lists Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. PlayStation’s product page lists the PS4 edition. Those official pages do not list a PC version, so they do not establish current native PC availability for the remake.

| What it is | The historical PlayStation game with regional PS1 releases. Release listing | A later remake. Activision |
| What the cited platform pages list | PlayStation release information; these sources do not establish a native PC edition. | Activision lists Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch; PlayStation lists PS4. Activision · PlayStation |
| How this PC guide applies | Run the PS1 game through a PS1 emulator such as DuckStation, using your own BIOS and legitimate game copy. | The PS1 emulator steps here do not install or provide the remake. |
That distinction matters when choosing what to buy or install. The PS1 disc and a PS1 emulator are the route described here; DuckStation does not turn that disc into the later remake. Conversely, the official Nitro-Fueled pages are about the remake and do not establish that it has a native PC version. If you specifically want Nitro-Fueled, check the publisher and platform-holder listings for that product rather than following these PS1 emulation steps.
Common setup snags
DuckStation will not start a game
Check that you have supplied a PS1 or PS2 BIOS image from your own console and that the emulator can access it. DuckStation requires a BIOS and does not bundle one; downloading a game copy does not replace that requirement. Consult the project README for the supported setup guidance.
Also check that you downloaded a DuckStation build intended for your operating system and that the emulator is pointed to the BIOS image. The available documentation establishes the need for a BIOS, but there is not one universal menu sequence to give for every operating system and release. Avoid using instructions for a different emulator, since its settings and requirements may not match DuckStation.
The PC does not read the physical disc
DuckStation’s support for disc play depends in part on the drive. Confirm that the PC has an optical drive and that it can access the disc. If it does not, a compatible external USB optical drive is a possible hardware option; using one does not guarantee success with every drive or disc.

Separate the possible causes rather than assuming the emulator itself is broken: the PC may lack a drive, the drive may not be accessible to DuckStation, or the disc may not be readable. A disc image can avoid relying on a PC optical drive, but only consider making or using one if the method is lawful where you live. It is not a license to obtain an image from an unofficial download site.

The game or BIOS region does not match
DuckStation’s README warns that a BIOS region mismatch can cause compatibility issues. Check the region of the BIOS and the game release rather than assuming all regional versions behave identically. The historical release listing records regional PS1 releases, including US product ID SCUS-94426.
The product ID is a useful identifying detail, not a promise that a particular combination of disc, BIOS, and drive will behave the same on every PC. If you have a regional version other than the US release, do not assume the US identifier applies to your copy. Check the release information for the version you own and follow DuckStation’s region guidance.
The controls are uncomfortable or not responding
DuckStation supports both keyboard and game-controller input. Review its input configuration and confirm the device is available to the PC. If you do not have a controller, keyboard input remains an option; if you prefer a gamepad, a PC-compatible controller is optional hardware.
Try the other supported input type if you are unsure whether the issue is the controller or its configuration. A controller that is not available to the computer cannot be configured in the emulator, while a keyboard remains a supported alternative. The setup does not require buying a controller to test whether the game launches.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I play Crash Team Racing PS1 on PC?
Use a PS1 emulator such as DuckStation, a BIOS image dumped from your own PlayStation, and a legitimate copy of the original PS1 game. DuckStation offers Windows 10/11, Linux, and macOS builds. You can try direct disc play with a compatible optical drive or use a personal disc image only if the method is lawful where you live.
Can I use my original PS1 disc with DuckStation?
DuckStation documents direct disc play, but whether it works depends in part on whether your PC’s optical drive can access and read the disc. A compatible external USB optical drive is an option if your PC has no suitable internal drive; it is not a guarantee that every drive or disc will work.
Do I need a PS1 BIOS for DuckStation?
Yes. DuckStation requires a PS1 or PS2 BIOS image and does not bundle one. Its README directs users to dump a BIOS from their own console. Do not substitute a BIOS downloaded from an unofficial site.
Is Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled the same as the PS1 game?
No. Nitro-Fueled is the later remake, while this guide covers the original PS1 release. Activision and PlayStation describe and list Nitro-Fueled separately; the cited official pages list console platforms and do not establish a native PC release.
Do I need to buy a controller?
No. DuckStation supports keyboard input as well as game-controller input. A controller compatible with your PC is optional if you prefer gamepad controls.
Does owning the PS1 disc mean I can make or download a game image?
Not necessarily. Ownership of a disc does not establish that every way of making, downloading, or using a copy is lawful. Copyright exceptions, anti-circumvention rules, and license terms vary by jurisdiction and method. Sony’s US software EULA is not a universal answer to personal-copying questions.

No. These steps are for the original PS1 game in a PS1 emulator. They do not install Nitro-Fueled, and the cited Activision and PlayStation pages list console platforms rather than establishing PC availability.
The Bottom Line
To play the original Crash Team Racing on PC, use DuckStation with a BIOS dumped from your own PlayStation and a legitimate PS1 game copy. Direct disc play depends on your PC drive; a controller is optional, and disc-image legality depends on your jurisdiction and method. This is the PS1 original, not Nitro-Fueled.
