After Storm 4, Road to Boruto is the optional next-generation continuation. NARUTO X BORUTO Ultimate Ninja STORM CONNECTIONS is not required in that sequence: it retells selected Naruto history in condensed form and adds a separate original Boruto story.
The correct Naruto Storm story order
- NARUTO: Ultimate Ninja STORM
- NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 2
- NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 3 Full Burst
- NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 4
- NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 4 Road to Boruto (optional continuation)
The first four numbered games form the main adaptation. The first Storm covers Naruto’s youth and the early part of his journey. Storm 2 moves into the Shippuden era, beginning with Naruto’s return and progressing toward the Akatsuki conflict. Storm 3 opens the Fourth Great Ninja War. Storm 4 carries that war through Naruto and Sasuke’s fated confrontation and includes material set after the war. Road to Boruto then moves the focus to the next generation.

This is the sequence presented by the official Naruto series lineup: experience the Naruto story in entries 1–4, then catch up with Boruto in Road to Boruto. You can therefore finish the numbered games without playing any other title between them.

What each game contributes to the timeline
1. NARUTO: Ultimate Ninja STORM
Start here even if you have already watched the anime. This game establishes Naruto as a young ninja and introduces the village, classmates, rivals and early missions that later games assume you understand. Its campaign is the foundation for the relationships and rivalries that become central in the Shippuden-era stories.

Because it is the first chapter, it also provides the clearest introduction to the series’ game systems. You learn how arena battles, support characters and the larger adventure structure work before the later entries add more characters and increasingly consequential conflicts.
2. NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 2
Storm 2 follows Naruto after the time skip. The story starts with his return and expands into the Shippuden cast and the Akatsuki conflict. Playing it immediately after Storm 1 preserves the intended progression: characters introduced as younger versions now have changed abilities, responsibilities and relationships.
Do not start with Storm 2 simply because its subtitle says Shippuden. Doing so skips the introductory Naruto material and makes several character dynamics arrive without their earlier context.
3. NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 3 Full Burst
Storm 3 is the point where the adaptation reaches the Fourth Great Ninja War. Its opening is built around that war, so it should follow Storm 2 rather than be treated as a separate side episode. The Full Burst edition is the expanded version used in the recommended sequence; when shopping, make sure the listing identifies that edition or a collection that specifically includes it.

The change in scale is deliberate. The first two games establish Naruto’s personal and village conflicts; Storm 3 places those characters in a worldwide crisis. Starting here can spoil major developments from the earlier campaigns.
4. NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 4
Storm 4 continues the war material and brings the numbered story to Naruto and Sasuke’s fated showdown. It also contains a continuation set after the war, so it is the conclusion of the core Naruto sequence rather than merely another chapter in the same conflict.
Complete Storm 4 before moving to Road to Boruto. That order lets the post-war material in Storm 4 function as the bridge into the next-generation setting instead of interrupting the climax.
5. NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 4 Road to Boruto
Road to Boruto is an optional follow-up focused on Boruto and the next generation. It is best treated as additional story after Storm 4, not as a replacement for Storm 4’s ending. If your goal is only the original Naruto storyline, you can stop after Storm 4; if you want the transition into Boruto’s era, play Road to Boruto next.
Which collection should you buy?
The collections do not contain the same amount of story. Choose by the point in the sequence you want to reach, not by the word “trilogy” or “legacy” alone.
| Release or collection | Story coverage | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM Trilogy | HD versions of Storm 1, Storm 2 and Storm 3 Full Burst | Starting the story from Naruto’s youth and playing through the beginning of the Fourth Great Ninja War | It does not include Storm 4, so you need Storm 4 separately to finish the numbered sequence |
| STORM Legacy | Storm 1, Storm 2, Storm 3, Storm 4 and Road to Boruto | Getting the four numbered stories and the Boruto continuation in one lineup when the edition is available for your system | Availability depends on platform, region and the specific edition being sold |
| Individual releases | One numbered game or expansion at a time | Buying only the chapter you are missing or spreading purchases across multiple systems | You must check whether the listing is the base game, an expanded edition or a bundle |
| NARUTO X BORUTO Ultimate Ninja STORM CONNECTIONS | A condensed, selected account of Naruto and Sasuke’s rivalry from childhood through the final battle, plus a separate original Boruto-led story | Reviewing the broad Naruto arc in one game or playing the additional Boruto story | It is not a full replacement for the four numbered campaigns and is not required between Storm 4 and Road to Boruto |
The official lineup lists the Trilogy on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch. That does not guarantee every digital or physical edition is currently sold in every region, and a newer port can have different availability from an older release. Confirm the platform, edition name and included games on the store page before paying.
Where Storm Connections fits
Connections creates confusion because its title includes both Naruto and Boruto. Its Naruto material is a condensed or selected retelling of Naruto and Sasuke’s rivalry, beginning in childhood and reaching the final battle. That makes it a recap or alternate presentation of material covered across the numbered games, not a missing chapter that belongs between Storm 3 and Storm 4.
Its separate Special Story Mode is an original story led by Boruto. You can play that after Storm 4, after Road to Boruto, or whenever you want an additional Boruto-focused scenario. For a first playthrough aimed at preserving the full chronology, leave Connections until after the numbered games. Playing it first is reasonable only if you specifically want a single-game overview and accept that major events are being summarized rather than experienced in their original campaign order.

Four practical ways to play
Plan A: the complete chronological run
- Play Storm 1 from its opening campaign through its conclusion.
- Start Storm 2 as the direct Shippuden-era follow-up.
- Continue with Storm 3 Full Burst and its Fourth Great Ninja War opening.
- Finish the numbered adaptation in Storm 4.
- Add Road to Boruto for the next-generation continuation.
- Play Connections afterward only if you want its condensed recap or original Special Story Mode.
This plan gives you the most complete progression represented by the official lineup while keeping the recap material out of the middle of the main sequence.
Plan B: you own the Trilogy
- Install the Trilogy and play its games in the included order: Storm 1, Storm 2, then Storm 3 Full Burst.
- Purchase or access Storm 4 separately.
- After Storm 4, add Road to Boruto if you want Boruto’s story.
The common mistake is assuming “Trilogy” means the entire numbered series. It stops after the third game. Treat Storm 4 as the required fourth step, not optional downloadable content.
Plan C: you want one condensed entry
Choose Connections if your priority is a shorter overview of Naruto’s and Sasuke’s rivalry rather than four full campaigns. Its selected Naruto story is useful as a recap, but it omits the breadth and pacing of the numbered games by design. Continue into its original Special Story Mode for a separate Boruto-led plot, or switch to Road to Boruto for the next-generation follow-up attached to Storm 4.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePlan D: you only want Boruto-era material
Play Storm 4 first if you want the context for the post-war world and the Naruto–Sasuke conclusion. Then choose Road to Boruto for its next-generation focus. Connections is an alternative Boruto-related option, but its Special Story Mode is original and its Naruto section is a condensed recap, so it does not replace the Storm 4-to-Road to Boruto path.

Buying and installation checklist
- Identify the exact title: distinguish Storm 3 Full Burst from a listing that names only Storm 3, and distinguish Storm 4 from Road to Boruto.
- Count the included games: the Trilogy covers three games; Legacy is described as covering Storm 1–4 plus Road to Boruto.
- Check your platform: the cited Trilogy listing names PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch. Other releases can have different system support.
- Check your region: physical stock, digital storefront listings and bundle names may differ by country.
- Read the edition details: a bundle can include an expansion, a remaster or only a base game. Verify the included story before checkout.
- Plan storage and downloads: collections and expanded editions may be listed as one purchase but installed as several game components; follow the platform’s ownership and download prompts.
- Keep the order visible: launch the campaigns in release-number order even if your library displays them alphabetically.
How to avoid spoilers while using the collections
Use the campaign labels rather than the date you bought a bundle. A collection may put all its games on one menu, but the narrative still advances from Storm 1 to Storm 4. Do not jump to a character episode or free-battle roster simply because it is unlocked; those modes can expose characters and forms from later points in the story.
If you are playing with someone who already knows the anime, agree on whether “story order” means only the main campaign or every optional scene. The core order is fixed by the four numbered entries. Road to Boruto and Connections add material beyond that core, and neither needs to interrupt it.
What the official lineup establishes
The official Naruto series description summarizes the arrangement as experiencing Naruto’s story in 1–4, catching up with Boruto in Road to Boruto, and enjoying a condensed Naruto journey alongside an original storyline in Connections. That wording supports treating Connections as a recap-plus-bonus entry rather than a numbered sequel.
The same official lineup reports that the Naruto game series has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. The page does not state a publication year for that figure, so it should not be interpreted as a 2026 sales total or as a current sales count.
Quick decision guide
| Your priority | Recommended route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Experience the entire Naruto game adaptation in order | Storm 1 → Storm 2 → Storm 3 Full Burst → Storm 4 | This is the complete numbered sequence. |
| Include the next generation | Complete Storm 4, then play Road to Boruto | Road to Boruto extends the experience into Boruto’s setting. |
| Start with a three-game bundle | Storm Trilogy, followed by Storm 4 | The Trilogy covers the first three steps but stops before the conclusion. |
| Own one game that summarizes Naruto | Connections | Its Naruto section is condensed and its Special Story Mode is original Boruto content. |
| Collect the broadest packaged lineup | STORM Legacy, where available for your platform and region | It is described as containing Storm 1–4 and Road to Boruto. |
Bottom line for a first playthrough
Begin with Storm 1 and move numerically through Storm 2, Storm 3 Full Burst and Storm 4. Stop there if you want only the main Naruto conclusion; continue with Road to Boruto for the next-generation chapter. Treat Connections as an optional condensed recap and original Boruto side story, not as a required fifth numbered game. Before buying a collection, verify its included titles, platform and regional edition so the package actually reaches the chapter you intend to play.
