Play the reboot campaigns in this order: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022), then Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023). This is both the release order and the story-continuity order. The 2019 game introduces this re-imagined timeline, MWII continues it indirectly, and MWIII follows MWII directly.
The correct Modern Warfare reboot order
There is one straightforward sequence for the reboot trilogy:

| Order | Full title | Year | Continuity role |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare | 2019 | Re-imagining that establishes the reboot timeline and its versions of the characters. |
| 2 | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II | 2022 | Indirect continuation of the 2019 campaign; its story begins three years after Task Force 141’s original formation. |
| 3 | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III | 2023 | Direct sequel to MWII; its events continue immediately after that game. |
Activision identifies the 2019 title as a re-imagining with a single-player Campaign. Blizzard’s launch guide describes MWII as an indirect continuation, while Activision describes MWIII as the direct sequel that picks up after MWII. See the 2019 Modern Warfare introduction, MWII launch guide, and MWIII launch communications.
Why this order works
The games share the Modern Warfare name with the earlier trilogy, but the 2019 release resets the continuity. It is not a remaster of the 2007 game, and the 2022 and 2023 releases are not the 2009 and 2011 games with slightly different typography. They present a new version of the setting, characters and events.

Because the reboot was released as a connected sequence, release order also gives the cleanest narrative progression. Starting in 2019 lets you meet the reboot’s interpretation of the central characters and organizations before later campaigns assume that foundation. MWII then moves the timeline forward, and MWIII is designed as the immediate next chapter rather than a separate prequel.
1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)
Why it comes first
The 2019 game is the starting point for this continuity. Activision calls it a re-imagining and identifies a single-player Campaign, so it is the essential first stop for anyone following the reboot story rather than the original series.
Play the Campaign from the game’s main menu. You do not need to complete another Modern Warfare title first to understand the reboot’s premise. If you have only played the older games, treat the 2019 campaign as a new introduction, not as chapter four of the classic trilogy.

What it establishes
The campaign introduces the reboot’s versions of its characters and the relationships that later installments build on. Even when later games revisit familiar names, they belong to this newer timeline. Using the 2019 title as your reference point prevents confusion over which backstory a later scene is assuming.
Optional Special Ops material
Activision says the cooperative Special Ops mode continues the Campaign story through Operations. Those Operations can add story context after you finish the campaign, but the available official descriptions do not identify them as required preparation for MWII. For a simple trilogy run, finish the 2019 Campaign first and regard Special Ops as optional additional material.

2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022)
Why it comes second
Modern Warfare II (2022) is the second campaign in the reboot sequence. Blizzard describes its Campaign as an indirect continuation of the 2019 game’s story, so it follows that game’s continuity without being labeled a scene-for-scene continuation.
The campaign is set three years after Task Force 141’s original formation, according to the official launch guide. That time jump is another reason to play the 2019 story first: you will recognize the reboot’s foundation before the later campaign advances it.

Use the full title when choosing a copy
Search and store listings often shorten the name to “Modern Warfare 2,” but the year matters. Select Modern Warfare II (2022), not Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009). The Roman numeral and release year are the safest identifiers when a digital storefront lists several similarly named games.
How to approach the campaign
Open MWII’s Campaign mode after completing MW (2019). The continuity connection is the reason to keep the 2019 game ahead of it; multiplayer progression, cooperative modes and other activities are not needed to establish the campaign sequence. If you are playing only for the story, move from the Campaign menu in MW (2019) to the Campaign menu in MWII rather than trying to combine missions across games.
3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023)
Why it comes third
Modern Warfare III (2023) is the final entry in this three-game order. Activision calls it the direct sequel to MWII and says the story continues immediately after MWII’s events. That makes it the least ambiguous placement: it belongs after the 2022 campaign, not before it.

Campaign availability and release timing
The full game, including its Campaign, launched on November 10, 2023. Activision also made the Campaign available early to eligible digital preorders. That early-access timing changed when some players could start, but it did not change the story order; MWIII remains the third campaign.

MWIII combines traditional cinematic missions with Open Combat Missions. Activision announced this campaign design in August 2023. Open Combat Missions give a mission more than one possible approach, so the pacing and route choices can feel different from a strictly linear sequence. They affect how you play individual missions, not where MWIII belongs in the trilogy.
If you prefer a continuous narrative, complete MWII before launching MWIII. The direct-sequel relationship means that events and character situations from the second campaign carry straight into the third.
Do not mix the reboot with the original trilogy
The similar names are the most common source of ordering mistakes. The following table separates the two timelines:
| Game to identify | Year | How to treat it for the reboot order |
|---|---|---|
| Modern Warfare | 2019 | Start here; this is the reboot’s first campaign. |
| Modern Warfare II | 2022 | Play second in the reboot sequence. |
| Modern Warfare III | 2023 | Play third in the reboot sequence. |
| Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare | 2007 | Original-timeline game; not a prerequisite for the reboot. |
| Modern Warfare 2 | 2009 | Original-timeline sequel; do not substitute it for MWII (2022). |
| Modern Warfare 3 | 2011 | Original-timeline third game; do not substitute it for MWIII (2023). |
Whenever you make a purchase or install a game, confirm both the exact title and year. “Modern Warfare 2” and “Modern Warfare II” can refer to different timelines, while “Modern Warfare 3” and “Modern Warfare III” can do the same.

Step-by-step: a spoiler-light play plan
- Identify the timeline. Look for the 2019, 2022 or 2023 release year. If a listing says 2007, 2009 or 2011, it belongs to the original trilogy instead.
- Start with MW (2019). Select its single-player Campaign. This establishes the reboot’s characters and setting.
- Decide whether to add Special Ops. The 2019 Special Ops Operations continue campaign material, but they are optional for reaching MWII and are not documented as a required bridge.
- Play MWII (2022). Finish its Campaign before moving on. It is the reboot’s indirect continuation and advances the timeline three years after Task Force 141’s original formation.
- Play MWIII (2023). Start its Campaign only after MWII if you want the direct-sequel progression. Its immediate continuation makes this the natural finale of the three-game run.
- Handle mission-style changes as gameplay differences. MWIII’s Open Combat Missions may offer several approaches, but you do not need to reorder missions or insert another game because of that format.
What is and is not included in this order
Included: the three reboot Campaigns
The sequence covers the three named single-player campaigns that form the reboot’s documented arc: MW (2019), MWII (2022) and MWIII (2023). It is the appropriate answer when someone asks how to play the Modern Warfare reboot campaigns in order.
Optional: 2019 Special Ops Operations
Special Ops Operations are additional cooperative story material connected to the 2019 Campaign. They can be played after MW (2019) if you want more context, but no official source in the available material establishes that every Operation must be completed before MWII.
Not established here: a complete cross-mode chronology
This three-game list is not a definitive chronology for every Warzone event, Special Ops mission, or MWII Raid. Those modes can have their own continuity questions, and the official campaign descriptions cited above do not provide a complete ordering for all of them. Do not insert those activities between the three campaigns unless you are following a separately documented chronology.
Choosing the right edition or listing
If you need to acquire one missing campaign, the story order is simple; the practical challenge is selecting the correct product listing. Current prices, stock and platform availability change, so verify those details on the storefront you use.
| Check before buying | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact title and year | Prevents buying the 2009 or 2011 original-trilogy game instead of MWII (2022) or MWIII (2023). |
| Platform | Confirms the copy works on the console or PC you intend to use. |
| Edition | Different editions can bundle different content; confirm that the Campaign is included. |
| Physical or digital format | Determines how you receive and install the game and whether a disc or account license is involved. |
| Region and account requirements | Store rules and activation requirements can vary by region and platform. |
Do not assume that a bundle, sale price or current stock exists unless the store page you are using states it. The continuity order remains the same regardless of edition.

If you have already started out of order
You started MWII first
You can continue playing, but starting MW (2019) afterward will provide the earlier introduction to this reboot timeline. If your priority is narrative context, pause MWII, complete the 2019 Campaign, then return to MWII before beginning MWIII.
You started MWIII first
Because MWIII is described as a direct sequel that continues immediately after MWII, going back to MW (2019) and MWII will restore the intended progression. You do not need to restart the entire game installation; simply play the earlier Campaigns before resuming MWIII.
You played the original trilogy
That experience is optional background, not a prerequisite. The reboot uses a separate continuity, so begin with the 2019 Campaign when you want the reboot’s version of the story.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon ordering mistakes
- Using “2” and “3” without years: The 2009 and 2011 games are easy to confuse with the 2022 and 2023 releases.
- Starting with MWIII because it is newer: Its immediate-sequel structure assumes MWII’s events.
- Treating Special Ops as mandatory: It is connected optional material, not an established prerequisite for the next campaign.
- Building a full Warzone chronology from this list: The campaign order does not establish the order of every live-service event or Raid.
- Assuming Open Combat Missions change the sequence: They change mission approach in MWIII, not the placement of that game.
Final recommended sequence
For the cleanest first playthrough, finish Modern Warfare (2019), then Modern Warfare II (2022), and finish with Modern Warfare III (2023). Add the 2019 Special Ops Operations only if you want optional cooperative story material, and keep the original 2007–2011 trilogy separate from this reboot timeline.
