For the main story, play Metro 2033 Redux, then Metro: Last Light Redux, then Metro Exodus. After finishing Exodus, play its expansions: The Two Colonels and then Sam’s Story. Deep Silver’s story guide places the three main games in 2033, 2034 and 2036, respectively. Deep Silver’s Metro story guide
What order should you play the Metro games in?
- Metro 2033 Redux — the beginning of Artyom’s story, set in 2033.
- Metro: Last Light Redux — the direct continuation, set in 2034.
- Metro Exodus — the next main entry, set in 2036.
- Metro Exodus: The Two Colonels — play after the main Exodus campaign.
- Metro Exodus: Sam’s Story — play after Exodus; the publisher says its events take place after the main game.
This is the recommended order for a first, story-focused playthrough. The publisher describes Metro 2033 as the beginning, Last Light as its continuation and Exodus as the journey beyond the Metro. Deep Silver’s Metro story guide

Where do The Two Colonels and Sam’s Story fit?
The Two Colonels
The expansion follows Colonel Khlebnikov in Novosibirsk as Colonel Miller retraces his final days. Its official description does not give an exact chapter break within the main campaign, so playing it after finishing Exodus keeps the main journey uninterrupted. Deep Silver’s The Two Colonels page

Sam’s Story
This expansion follows Sam after the events of Metro Exodus, making it a post-campaign story. Deep Silver’s Sam’s Story page

Should you play Metro 2033 before Last Light?
Yes. Last Light is the continuation of Metro 2033, so playing the first game before it preserves the main story’s intended sequence. The Redux editions are updated editions of these two games; Metro Redux collects both and does not include Exodus. Deep Silver’s Metro Redux page
What about Metro Awakening?
Metro Awakening is a 2024 VR release listed for SteamVR, Meta Quest and PlayStation VR2. The official support catalogue does not establish its exact place in the story chronology, so there is no verified chronological slot to add here. If you are following Artyom’s main-game arc, play the trilogy first and treat Awakening as an optional VR entry. PLAION’s Metro Awakening support catalogue

Which edition or bundle should you look for?
For the first two games, Metro Redux is the collection containing their Redux editions. For Exodus and both expansions, look for a package that explicitly includes the base game, The Two Colonels and Sam’s Story.
