What you need to play on a current console
The 2026 current-console release is The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition. PlayStation lists a PS5 version, while Xbox lists an Xbox Series X|S-optimized edition with Smart Delivery. Choose the listing for the platform on which you intend to play; an Xbox purchase and a PlayStation purchase are separate products.

- An account for the relevant console store and a payment method, unless you already own the game through an eligible entitlement.
- An internet connection for purchasing, downloading, patching and online co-op.
- A second controller if you intend to use couch co-op. On PS5, DualSense vibration is supported.
The Xbox listing also marks the game as cloud playable with an eligible Game Pass tier, but it still says the game purchase is required. Cloud availability can depend on account, region and service status, so verify the listing shown to your account before relying on streaming instead of an installation.

PS5: purchase, install and start the game
1. Find the correct edition
- Open the PlayStation Store on your PS5.
- Search for The Lord of the Rings: War in the North.
- Select the product identified as Legacy Edition and confirm that the listing provides a PS5 version.
- Complete the purchase, or select the download option if the title is already attached to your account.
Do not assume that an older-generation listing is the same product as the current PS5 entry. Read the edition name and platform label on the product page before paying.

2. Download and apply the update
- Start the download from the product page or from Game Library > Your Collection.
- Leave the PS5 connected to the internet while the game installs.
- Highlight the game on the home screen, press the Options button, and choose Check for Update.
- Install any update offered, then wait for the console to finish copying or applying it before launching a new campaign.
Aspyr’s Patch 1 note, dated September 15, 2026, says the patch addresses equipment and gear-loss issues, a progression blocker in Fornost and general stability improvements. Those are the issues specifically named in the note; installing the patch is not a guarantee that every possible bug has been removed.
3. Set up PS5 online co-op
- Make sure every participant has a PlayStation Network account and a copy of the game or the required entitlement on the account that will play.
- Ensure the host account has an active PlayStation Plus subscription. The PlayStation listing says PS Plus is required for online play.
- Launch the game, choose the online or fellowship option from the in-game menu, and invite the other players through the console’s session or friends interface.
- Have each invited player accept the invitation and join before the host starts the mission.
The PlayStation description advertises “Co-op Fellowship – Play with up to 2 friends online or in split-screen co-op.” That wording supports a maximum of three online participants in total. The same store page separately displays a generic player-count field of “1 – 2 players,” so the page does not establish the maximum number of local split-screen players. Treat local PS5 capacity as unresolved rather than promising three-player couch co-op.

4. Set up PS5 split-screen co-op
- Connect and sign in the additional DualSense controller or controllers before entering the co-op menu.
- Open the game’s local or split-screen fellowship option.
- Use the on-screen prompt on each controller to join, then select the participating heroes.
- If the game refuses an additional local player, check the current player-count information in the store listing and the in-game menu; the official PS5 page has conflicting local-count fields.
A second DualSense is optional, not a requirement for solo play. The listing confirms DualSense vibration support, but it does not provide a complete current button map. Use the game’s control screen for the buttons shown by your installed version.
Xbox Series X|S: purchase, install and start the game
1. Choose the Xbox listing
- Open the Microsoft Store on the console.
- Search for The Lord of the Rings: War in the North.
- Select War in the North – Legacy Edition and verify the Xbox Series X|S-optimized label.
- Buy the game or choose the install option if you already own it.
The Xbox listing says Smart Delivery is supported. That means the console can provide the appropriate version for a compatible Xbox console under Microsoft’s entitlement system; you still need to own the game through the account or purchase route shown in the store.

2. Install and update
- Choose Install from the product page, or open My games & apps > Full library > Owned games and select the title.
- After installation, highlight the game, press the Menu button, and choose Manage game and add-ons to check for available updates.
- Install the newest update before beginning a campaign, particularly if the console has been offline for a while.
The same September 15, 2026 Aspyr Patch 1 note applies to the current release’s reported gear-loss, Fornost progression and stability fixes. It describes targeted fixes, not a promise of a bug-free build.
3. Start Xbox local co-op
- Connect up to the controllers you plan to use and sign in the additional players.
- Launch the game and choose the local, shared-screen or split-screen fellowship option.
- Have the other players join when the in-game prompt appears.
- Select the available heroes and begin the mission after everyone is displayed in the session.
The Xbox Store explicitly lists local co-op for 2–3 players, along with shared or split-screen play and single-player support. This is the clearest official statement of couch-co-op capacity among the two current-console listings.

4. Start Xbox online co-op
- Confirm that the host and joining accounts have the game entitlement.
- Give the host account an active Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate subscription. Xbox requires one of these tiers for online console multiplayer.
- Open the game’s online fellowship mode and invite friends through the Xbox guide or accept an invitation sent by another player.
- Wait for each player to appear in the lobby, then launch the selected mission.
The Xbox listing supports online co-op for two to three players. It also lists cloud play for the eligible Game Pass tiers, but cloud access does not remove the stated requirement to purchase the game.

These are storefront capabilities, not independent player studies. The PlayStation figures and the Xbox figures were listed by their respective stores in 2026, and the conflicting PlayStation local-player fields should be treated as a genuine qualification.

Can PS5 and Xbox players play together?
Not on the evidence currently provided by the official listings. Neither the PlayStation page nor the Xbox page confirms cross-play between the two platforms. Do not buy the game assuming that a PS5 player can join an Xbox-hosted session, or vice versa. Plan for each group to remain on the same console family unless a later platform or publisher announcement explicitly adds cross-play.
What you do in War in the North
The game is a cooperative action RPG set in Middle-earth. The platform descriptions present three selectable heroes:
- Eradan, a ranger suited to ranged attacks and scouting.
- Andriel, an elf loremaster who brings lore-based abilities and support options.
- Farin, a dwarf champion built around sturdy frontline combat.
You can swap among the characters, develop skills and improve equipment while fighting Agandaûr’s forces. In a group, coordinate hero choices so that the party is not built entirely around one style of attack. A player who prefers direct melee can take the champion, while another can cover distance or support the group with the ranger or loremaster. The exact button layout and any changes from the original release should be read in the installed game’s control menu; the original Xbox 360 manual is not an authoritative map for the 2026 Legacy Edition.

Update and connection troubleshooting
The game is missing from the library
- Verify that you are signed in to the account that bought the Legacy Edition.
- Open the store product page directly and check whether it offers Download or Install rather than a purchase prompt.
- On Xbox, check My games & apps > Full library > Owned games. On PS5, check Game Library > Your Collection.
- If the purchase was made on a different platform, remember that console-store entitlements are not automatically interchangeable.
An update will not install
- Confirm that the console has a stable internet connection and sufficient free storage for the patch.
- Pause other downloads, restart the console and retry the update.
- Check the game’s installed version from its console options menu and compare it with the newest version offered by the store.
- Do not begin a new campaign while an update is queued if you are trying to obtain the fixes described in Patch 1.
Online co-op is unavailable
- On PS5, confirm that the host has PlayStation Plus and that privacy settings allow multiplayer invitations.
- On Xbox, confirm that the host account has Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate for online console multiplayer.
- Have all players launch the same current Legacy Edition listing and install the same available update.
- Test a direct invitation from the console’s friends interface, then have the recipient accept it before the host starts the mission.
- If one player is on PS5 and another is on Xbox Series X|S, treat the session as unsupported because cross-play is not confirmed.
A local player cannot join
- Connect the extra controller before opening the local fellowship menu and sign in the additional user when prompted.
- Check that the controller is assigned to a different profile if the game does not detect it.
- On Xbox, the official listing supports two to three local players; on PS5, the store’s “1 – 2 players” field conflicts with its split-screen wording, so the installed game may limit local participation differently.
- Use the in-game prompt rather than assuming that pressing a particular face button will join; current controls are not fully documented by the old manual.
Progress or equipment appears to be lost
First confirm that the game is updated. Aspyr’s September 15, 2026 Patch 1 note specifically identifies equipment and gear-loss issues and a Fornost progression blocker among its fixes. If the problem persists on the patched build, record the mission, character, item and point at which the loss occurred, then use the support route linked from the game’s current store or publisher page. The patch note does not establish that every existing save can be repaired.
A practical first-session checklist
- Buy or claim the Legacy Edition for the console you will actually use.
- Install the game and run the console’s update check.
- Confirm the latest available build is installed before creating a new campaign.
- For PS5 online play, activate PlayStation Plus; for Xbox online console play, activate Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate.
- Connect the additional controllers before opening local co-op.
- Invite online players from the same console family and wait for every player to join the lobby.
- Open the control menu and test movement, combat, character switching and menu navigation before starting a long mission.
- Choose a hero whose role fits the group, then begin the fellowship.
Which console version should you choose?
Choose PS5 if your group is already on PlayStation, you want DualSense vibration, or your friends use PlayStation Plus. Choose Xbox Series X|S if you want the store’s explicit two-to-three-player local and online co-op statement, Series optimization and Smart Delivery. Neither platform is the safe choice for cross-console parties because cross-play is not confirmed. For couch co-op specifically, Xbox provides the clearer published player-count information; on PS5, verify the actual local-player limit in the store and in-game menus before buying extra controllers.
