The membership is attached to the Nintendo Account, so check that the correct account is being used on the console before troubleshooting the game itself.
The exact membership price is not stated in the supplied Nintendo documentation and can vary by region, plan length, and Nintendo’s current offers. Do not assume a particular price from an old guide. Confirm the current price and eligibility in the Nintendo eShop for your account’s region.

The Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics software
The game is delivered as part of the N64 Classics application rather than as a separately documented original-Switch purchase in this setup. Install or open that application from the HOME Menu. If it does not appear, use the Nintendo eShop while signed in to the account with the Expansion Pack membership and check the Nintendo 64 library listing.
Periodic Internet validation
Nintendo notes that the library may require Internet access periodically to validate membership. You do not need to treat every launch as an online multiplayer session, but a console that has been offline for a long period can be asked to reconnect before the software starts. If the application reports that your membership cannot be verified, connect the Switch to the Internet, confirm the account, and try again.
Start Ocarina of Time on Nintendo Switch
Use this sequence on an original Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, or Nintendo Switch OLED model that supports the N64 Classics software.
- Confirm the account and membership. From the HOME Menu, select the user profile that has an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. If several users share the console, do not assume that a membership on one account automatically gives every profile the same access.
- Launch Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics. Select the software icon from the HOME Menu. If the icon is missing, locate the application through the Nintendo eShop and complete its download or update.
- Choose the single-player option. The N64 Classics software presents its library and play options. Select the single-player path when prompted.
- Select the game. Highlight The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in the catalog and press the A button. The software then loads the Nintendo 64 version and displays its on-screen instructions.
- Choose how to hold the console or controller. You can play in handheld, tabletop, or TV mode, depending on the Switch model and the compatible controller connected. Switch Lite play differs because that model is designed around handheld use.
- Begin the game. Follow the prompts on screen. If the buttons do not feel like the labels you remember from an N64 controller, open the controls guide before entering a long play session.
The game loads through the N64 Classics interface each time. Keep the application updated if Nintendo provides an update, because the catalog and support behavior are managed through that software rather than through a modern standalone Switch game menu.
Controller choices: Joy-Con, Pro Controller, or N64 Controller
You do not need Nintendo’s N64 Controller to play. Nintendo describes that accessory as designed for Nintendo 64 Classics software, but it is an optional controller. A standard compatible Switch controller is sufficient for access and play.

View the original button layout
While the N64 game is running, open the N64 Suspend Menu and choose the option to view the controls or controls guide. Nintendo’s library interface can display the original controller mappings for the selected game. This is the fastest way to identify actions when playing with Joy-Con or a Pro Controller, where the physical arrangement is different from the three-pronged N64 controller.
Customize the mapping when a button feels wrong
Nintendo supports customizing controls for a game-and-controller combination from the N64 library’s controls menu. Use the original mapping as your reference, then assign functions to buttons that are comfortable for your controller and play style. Make changes before starting a difficult sequence, and recheck the mapping if you switch from handheld Joy-Con controls to a different controller in TV mode.
A custom arrangement changes the control assignment, not the underlying game. If an input appears not to work, first confirm that the button is assigned to the intended N64 function and that you edited the mapping for the controller currently connected.
How suspend saves work
The N64 Classics software provides suspend points, which are quick snapshots managed by the library interface. They are separate from simply pausing the game and are useful when you need to stop immediately or want a return point before experimenting with a puzzle or route.
Create a suspend point
- Press the Minus button while playing to open the N64 Suspend Menu.
- If you are using the Nintendo 64 Controller, press ZR to open the same menu.
- Select Create Suspend Point.
- Choose one of the available save slots.
- Confirm the slot selection and return to the game or menu as directed.
Nintendo documents four suspend-point slots. Select a slot deliberately: replacing an existing suspend point overwrites it, and Nintendo says that overwrite cannot be undone. Use a separate slot when you want to preserve an earlier position, rather than saving over the only point you may need.

Use suspend points safely
- Keep at least one slot for a stable location before trying a risky section.
- Use a second slot for a newer position so that a mistake does not remove the older fallback.
- Read the slot information in the Suspend Menu before confirming an overwrite.
- Do not assume that closing the game without creating a suspend point creates a new recoverable snapshot; use the documented command when you need a specific return point.
Play in handheld, tabletop, and TV modes
Nintendo lists handheld, tabletop, and TV modes for the N64 Classics software. The practical setup depends on your Switch model.

On a standard Switch or Switch OLED, start the N64 Classics application with the console undocked and use the attached Joy-Con. This is the simplest setup because the screen and controls travel together. Check the controls guide if the original N64 functions are difficult to identify on the Joy-Con layout.
Tabletop mode
Place a compatible Switch model on its stand, detach the Joy-Con, and select the game from the N64 Classics application. A Pro Controller or another compatible wireless controller can be used when supported by the console. Tabletop play is useful when one person wants the built-in screen without holding the console.
TV mode
Dock a compatible Switch, select the N64 Classics application on the television, and use a paired controller. The optional N64 Controller is most useful here if you want an arrangement close to the original hardware, but it is not required. The same controls guide and remapping options remain available from the N64 Suspend Menu.
Switch Lite considerations
Nintendo cautions that the Switch Lite experience may differ. The Lite is built for handheld play and does not use the same docking setup as the other Switch models. You can still use its built-in controls, while external compatible controllers may be paired separately if your setup supports them. Follow the console’s own controller-connection instructions when using an external pad.

Which version are you playing?
This guide covers the Nintendo 64 game supplied through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack library on the original Nintendo Switch platform. It is not a walkthrough of every release of Ocarina of Time, and the N64 Classics version should not be described as interchangeable with a separately listed product for another Nintendo platform.
The original Nintendo Switch route
On an original Switch, the route is the N64 Classics application and the Expansion Pack membership described above. The catalog identifies Ocarina of Time as one of the included N64 games. Access, controls, and suspend points are handled through that library software.
A separate Switch 2 listing
Nintendo’s search results also surfaced a distinct Switch 2 product page with a stated release date of November 5, 2026. That date is in the future relative to October 17, 2026, so it should not be treated as currently available in this guide. Do not buy or configure the N64 Classics route on the assumption that it is the same product as the announced Switch 2 listing. Verify the platform and release status when choosing software for a Switch 2.

The game is not visible in the library
- Confirm that you opened Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics rather than a different Nintendo Switch Online application.
- Check that the current user account has Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, not only the standard membership.
- Connect the console to the Internet so the software can validate membership and refresh its catalog information.
- Close and reopen the application after the membership check completes.
The software says membership cannot be verified
Reconnect the Switch to the Internet, then launch the application with the account that owns the active Expansion Pack membership. If multiple accounts are present, switch to the eligible profile. A periodic online validation request is expected behavior for the library; it does not indicate that the game itself is an online multiplayer title.

Open the N64 Suspend Menu and select the controls guide or view-controls option. Nintendo provides the original mapping there and allows customization for the game/controller combination. Apply the mapping to the controller actually in use, then test a few functions before continuing.

You accidentally replaced a suspend point
Nintendo documents overwriting a suspend slot as irreversible. If a point has been replaced, the library does not provide a documented undo command. For future saves, keep an older fallback in another slot and read the slot details before confirming a replacement.
You expected the N64 Controller to be required
It is not required. Use Joy-Con, a Pro Controller, or another compatible Switch controller and consult the in-game mapping. The N64 Controller is an optional accessory for players who prefer the original-style physical layout.
A practical setup checklist
- Use the Nintendo Switch user account with an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
- Make sure the console can connect to the Internet for periodic membership validation.
- Open Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics and choose the single-player option.
- Select The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and press A.
- Choose handheld, tabletop, or TV mode according to your Switch model.
- Open the controls guide before playing if the Joy-Con or Pro Controller layout is unfamiliar.
- Create a suspend point with Minus, or ZR on the Nintendo 64 Controller, and remember that there are four slots.
- Never overwrite a needed slot casually; Nintendo says an overwrite cannot be undone.
- Keep the original-Switch N64 Classics version separate from any future or separately listed Switch 2 product.
What this route does—and does not—provide
This method gives an eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack member access to the Nintendo 64 version through Nintendo’s Classics library. It includes the library’s controller guide, custom-mapping support, and suspend-point feature. The optional N64 Controller can make the layout feel closer to the original console, but the game remains playable without it.
The route is specifically about launching the N64 release on the original Switch platform.
