Nintendo’s rebuilt Switch 2 edition is scheduled for November 5, 2026, and cannot be played before that release. Until then, the original Nintendo 64 version is the practical option through a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, provided the title and service are offered in your country.
The upcoming edition is a Switch 2-exclusive rebuild with overhauled graphics, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic music, enhanced controls and modern camera movement. The Nintendo 64 route gives you the original game through the classic-games catalog rather than the rebuilt presentation. Both routes support playing on a television, at a tabletop or in handheld mode when used on Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo currently lists the rebuilt game as an upcoming Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive release. It is not an already playable Switch 2 application, so a search of the eShop before launch may show a product page or pre-release listing rather than a downloadable game. Nintendo’s listed release date is November 5, 2026.
If you want to play immediately, choose the original Nintendo 64 edition in the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack catalog. Individual classic titles, catalog size and features can differ by country, so confirm the listing on your local Nintendo service page before buying a membership.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The two entries should not be treated as interchangeable versions. One is a new Switch 2 build; the other is access to the original Nintendo 64 game through a subscription service.
Route 1: buy the rebuilt Nintendo Switch 2 edition
What this edition is
Nintendo describes the release as built from the ground up for Nintendo Switch 2. Its advertised changes include completely overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, enhanced controls and modern camera movements. Nintendo presents it as a new entry point for the series, while retaining the classic story in which Link must become the Hero of Time and stop Ganondorf from taking the Triforce and conquering the kingdom.
This is the route to choose if presentation and modernized play are more important to you than accessing the original Nintendo 64 version right now. It is a single-system, one-player game; there is no two-console multiplayer mode listed for this release.
Hardware and storage requirements
- Console: Nintendo Switch 2 is required. Nintendo labels this edition exclusive to that system, so an original Nintendo Switch is not a supported platform for the rebuilt game.
- Storage: Nintendo estimates a 27 GB game file. Leave at least that much usable space, plus room for the console’s system data and future updates, before starting a digital download.
- Display choices: TV mode, tabletop mode and handheld mode are supported.
- Players: One player on one system.
How to buy and install it
- On a Nintendo Switch 2, open Nintendo eShop and search for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. You can also check Nintendo’s official product listing from a browser signed in to the Nintendo Account you use on the console.
- Check that the listing identifies the Nintendo Switch 2 edition and shows the November 5, 2026 release date. Do not assume that a Nintendo 64 catalog entry is the same product.
- Review your region’s price, currency, edition details and release availability. Nintendo’s product information confirms the file-size estimate and supported modes, but the cited information does not establish a universal price.
- Purchase the digital edition when it becomes available in your storefront. If the product is still in a pre-release state, follow the store’s displayed release and download instructions rather than expecting immediate access.
- Before downloading, verify that the console has roughly 27 GB of free storage. A microSD Express card or internal-space cleanup may be necessary if the available space is lower than the estimate.
- After installation, start the game from the Home menu. Sign in with the Nintendo Account that owns the purchase if the console asks you to verify ownership.
Because the information available before launch does not include independent performance measurements, frame-rate tests, stock information or a confirmed price, do not rely on unofficial figures when deciding whether to buy. Recheck the regional eShop listing on or after launch for the final price, download size and any update requirement.
Route 2: play the original Nintendo 64 version with Nintendo Switch Online
What the subscription route provides
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is the relevant membership tier for Nintendo 64 games. Where Ocarina of Time is included in your country’s catalog, the membership lets you play the original Nintendo 64 release through Nintendo’s classic-games service. This is not the rebuilt Switch 2 edition: it does not turn the older game into the version with newly advertised visuals, voiced scenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestration or modern camera movement.
This route is useful before November 5, 2026 and remains the way to revisit the original presentation after the rebuilt edition launches. Access is tied to an active membership and to the service’s regional catalog, rather than to a one-time purchase of the new game.

How to check eligibility and subscribe
- Open Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online service page for your country and search the Nintendo 64 catalog for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Catalog availability can vary by country.
- Select the Expansion Pack tier, not the standard Nintendo Switch Online tier, because Nintendo identifies Expansion Pack as the tier that contains the Nintendo 64 catalog.
- Buy or renew the membership through one of Nintendo’s documented channels: Nintendo eShop, the Nintendo Switch Online app or Nintendo’s website.
- Use the Nintendo Account that will play the game. If a family membership is involved, confirm that the playing account is in the eligible family group according to Nintendo’s account rules.
- On Nintendo Switch 2, open the Nintendo Switch Online software and choose the Nintendo 64 catalog. If the title is listed for your region, download or launch it from that catalog.
- Start the game while the membership is active. If the membership expires, access to subscription-based classic games is suspended until the membership is renewed.
Do not subscribe solely on the assumption that every country receives the same titles or features. Nintendo’s service pages are the authority for your region, and the catalog can change over time.

Playing handheld, on a TV or at a tabletop
The rebuilt edition explicitly supports all three Nintendo Switch 2 play styles. In handheld mode, the game runs on the console’s built-in screen, so you can play without a television. Tabletop mode lets you place the system on a stand and use detached controls. TV mode sends the game to a connected television while you play with the console’s paired controls.
For the Nintendo 64 subscription route, the game is launched through the Nintendo Switch Online software on your Switch 2. Your practical play style depends on which mode you choose at that moment; the service is not a separate console purchase. The available evidence does not specify a special handheld-only limitation for the classic game.
Account continuity when moving from Switch to Switch 2
Nintendo Support says Nintendo Switch Online benefits remain available on Nintendo Switch 2 when the same subscribed Nintendo Account is linked. This matters if you already pay for Expansion Pack on another Nintendo console: sign in with that subscribed account rather than creating a new account on Switch 2.
- Confirm the Nintendo Account email or profile used for the membership.
- Link that account to the user profile on Nintendo Switch 2.
- Open Nintendo Switch Online and check that the membership status is recognized.
- If the classic catalog still asks you to subscribe, verify that you are not using a different local profile or Nintendo Account.
Account linking does not override regional catalog rules. A membership can carry over while a particular classic title remains unavailable in the country associated with your account.
Which option should you choose?
Choose the rebuilt edition if…
- You want the new visual treatment, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue and orchestral music.
- You prefer the advertised modern camera movement and enhanced controls.
- You are willing to wait until November 5, 2026 and own Nintendo Switch 2.
- You want a one-time game purchase rather than access that depends on an ongoing membership.
Choose Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack if…
- You want to play before the rebuilt edition’s release.
- You specifically want the original Nintendo 64 version.
- You already have an Expansion Pack membership and the title is listed in your country.
- You are comfortable with subscription-based access to the classic-games catalog.
Use both if…
You want to experience the original Nintendo 64 release now and later play Nintendo’s rebuilt Switch 2 interpretation. The services are separate access routes, so owning or using one does not convert it into the other.

Troubleshooting and common purchase mistakes
The game cannot be found before November 5
That is expected for an unreleased title. Check that you are searching the Nintendo Switch 2 product listing rather than the Nintendo 64 catalog, and verify the release date shown by your regional storefront. The classic version is the immediate alternative where Nintendo lists it for your country.
The eShop shows a different product
Read the platform and edition information carefully. The rebuilt game is marked as Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive; a Nintendo 64 catalog entry represents the original release. If the page does not identify the Switch 2 edition, do not assume that it includes the rebuilt assets.
Your Expansion Pack membership is active but the game is unavailable
First check the catalog for your country. Nintendo states that individual classic titles and service features can vary by country. Next, confirm that the console user is linked to the Nintendo Account that owns the membership. Restarting the Nintendo Switch Online software after account verification can refresh the displayed membership status.

The digital edition will not fit on the console
Nintendo’s estimate for the rebuilt game is 27 GB. Delete unused software or capture data, or add compatible storage, then retry the download. Keep extra free space because the estimate is the game file size, not a guarantee of the total space required for system data and updates.
You expected the classic game to have the remake’s features
The subscription route is the Nintendo 64 version. Enhanced controls, modern camera movements, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic music and overhauled visuals are features Nintendo advertises for the rebuilt Switch 2 edition, not automatic changes to the classic catalog entry.
What is still unconfirmed
Nintendo’s published information used for this guide does not establish a universal retail price, frame-rate target, performance measurements, launch-day stock, or a complete list of regional storefronts. Treat any third-party number for those items as unverified until Nintendo displays it for your market. The confirmed practical choices are therefore simple: wait for the November 5 Switch 2 release if you want the rebuilt presentation, or use Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack to play the original Nintendo 64 version where your local catalog includes it.
