You can play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on a modern Switch-family console through Nintendo 64 Classics with an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. On PC, the unofficial Ship of Harkinian project offers a route that requires a legally acquired copy of the game. A previously owned Nintendo 3DS and physical copy of Ocarina of Time 3D are another option. Nintendo’s announced Switch 2 physical edition is scheduled for November 5, 2026, so it is not yet available as of October 7, 2026.

Which route should you choose?

Route What you need What to expect
Switch or Switch 2: Nintendo 64 Classics A Switch-family console and an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Access to the N64 version through Nintendo Classics. The catalog and features can vary by region. Nintendo’s Zelda and Nintendo Switch Online information
Switch 2 physical edition Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s U.S. product page lists a physical edition for November 5, 2026. It is forthcoming as of October 7, 2026, and advertises revised visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, and enhanced controls and camera movement. Nintendo’s Switch 2 product page
PC: Ship of Harkinian A PC that supports a project build and a legally acquired Ocarina of Time ROM. An unofficial port with configurable graphics backends and keyboard controls. Its documentation describes extracting game assets from the ROM. Ship of Harkinian documentation
Nintendo 3DS family: Ocarina of Time 3D 3DS-family hardware and a legitimate physical copy, such as one bought used. This is the 3DS remake rather than the N64 release. Nintendo says 3DS eShop purchases ended March 27, 2023, so the digital version is not a new-purchase option there. Nintendo UK’s game page and eShop notice

For the simplest currently documented official route, use the Switch N64 library if you already have compatible hardware and the required membership. Choose 3DS if you specifically want the remake and can obtain a legitimate physical copy. Ship of Harkinian is for PC players prepared to handle its ROM-based setup. If you want Nintendo’s announced updated Switch 2 edition, wait until its stated release date and check availability in your region.

Play the N64 version through Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo lists Ocarina of Time in the Nintendo 64 Classics collection. The N64 Classics catalog requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack; a standard Nintendo Switch Online membership alone does not provide that tier. Nintendo’s UK catalog page also identifies the game in the collection. Nintendo UK’s Expansion Pack announcement

Download the library

  1. On the console, open the Nintendo Switch Online application.
  2. Select Nintendo Classics, then choose the relevant library.
  3. Download the Nintendo 64 Classics application and launch it to find Ocarina of Time.

Nintendo says classic games can be played offline, but the console must connect to the internet to validate the membership at least once every seven days. Access depends on an active membership, and Nintendo says classic games are unavailable after membership expires. Confirm that the N64 collection is offered for your account region before subscribing. Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics access guide Nintendo Support on access after membership expires

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
  • This is the world edition. It has different packaging but is fully authentic and works on US region 3DS systems.
  • The Legend of Zelda veterans can look forward to the Master Quest - a second quest with revamped puzzles and redesigned dungeons.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is a masterful improvement on one of the landmark releases in video game history.
  • “E10+”, w/Animated Blood, Fantasy Violence, Suggestive Themes

Use Ship of Harkinian on PC

Ship of Harkinian is an unofficial PC port project. Its documentation says you need a legally acquired Ocarina of Time ROM; the project extracts the game’s copyrighted assets from that file. The project’s instructions are not a general legal determination about copying or using ROMs: laws differ by jurisdiction and circumstances. Do not download unauthorized game files.

Controls and graphics options

The project documents a default keyboard layout: WASD for the analog stick, the arrow keys for C buttons, and TFGH for the D-pad, with separate keys assigned to A, B, Z, and Start. You can therefore use the documented keyboard controls; a controller is not presented as a requirement.

Documented graphics backends include DirectX 11 on Windows, OpenGL on supported platforms, and Metal on macOS. Check the project’s current documentation for supported builds and setup steps for your operating system, since project requirements can change.

Play the 3DS remake with a physical copy

Ocarina of Time 3D is the Nintendo 3DS-family remake. Nintendo’s UK page notes that purchases from the Wii U and 3DS eShops ended on March 27, 2023. That cutoff means you should not expect to buy the digital 3DS version as a new eShop purchase; this route is for someone with an existing copy or a legitimate used physical game.

Rank #3
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (w/ Master Quest)
  • Play the original Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
  • Or the Master Quest edition with many bonus features

When buying used hardware or a cartridge, check the device and game region, physical condition, and seller’s return terms. Availability depends on the used market.

What changes with the announced Switch 2 edition?

Nintendo’s U.S. listing gives November 5, 2026 as the release date for a physical Switch 2 edition. Because that date is after October 7, 2026, the edition is not yet playable or available on the evidence available here. Nintendo describes it as a presentation and control update, including overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, enhanced controls, and modern camera movements. Check Nintendo’s regional product page for updated release and availability details.
