Which emulator do you need?
For this guide, the supported route is Cemu with the Wii U version of the game. The Cemu project repository identifies it as a Wii U emulator and links to setup resources. Cemu’s setup guide covers the process.

This article covers the Wii U/Cemu setup only; it does not compare Switch emulators. Cemu lists Windows and Linux downloads. Its native macOS build is experimental and is not described as stable for issue-free gameplay. The project also notes known performance issues on ARM Macs related to MoltenVK and Rosetta. Check the current Cemu README for platform status and downloads, since availability can change.
What you need before installing
- A PC that can run Cemu. BOTW is demanding, particularly if you increase resolution or frame rate; no single hardware configuration or frame-rate outcome is guaranteed.
- Your own Wii U game copy, dumped from Wii U hardware for use in Cemu. The emulator does not provide the game. Cemu documents the process in its guide and the installation guide.
- The game update files for the title. Cemu’s game-installation guide flags BOTW as a game that may need its latest update to function correctly.
- A keyboard and mouse or a compatible controller. Some game elements work better with motion controls, but motion input is not a universal requirement.
Use only your own game copy, and avoid unauthorized game downloads, title keys, or bundled game-and-emulator installers. The sources cited here do not establish the legal rules that apply in every jurisdiction; those questions depend on local law.

How to install and launch BOTW in Cemu
- Get Cemu from the official project. Use the Cemu repository and its linked setup documentation rather than relying on an old video or an unofficial bundled installer. Follow the current instructions for your operating system.
- Prepare your own Wii U game dump. Cemu’s guide documents dumping game copies from Wii U hardware. The required files depend on the dump and setup; do not substitute a download from an unofficial source.
- Install the base game. In Cemu, open
File→Install game title, update or DLC, then select the relevantmeta.xmlfrom the dumped title. See Cemu’s Installing Games guide for the current workflow. Update and DLC installation can differ on Linux, so consult current platform guidance if the steps do not match your setup. - Install the game update. Use the same installation workflow to add the update from your dump. Cemu’s guide notes that BOTW may need its latest update to work correctly in Cemu.
- Set up input. Configure keyboard and mouse or map a controller in Cemu’s input settings. The installation guide confirms standard keyboard-and-mouse support; motion-capable input can help with certain game elements.
- Launch at conservative settings. First check that the game starts and runs acceptably before changing graphics options. Then adjust one setting at a time so you can identify which change affects image quality or stability.
How to improve performance without guessing at a universal preset
Cemu’s BOTW optimization guide describes graphics packs and settings including FPS++, resolution, and shadow quality. These are options, not benchmark results: the guide does not establish a typical frame rate for all PCs. The game can demand more GPU performance when you raise resolution or frame rate, so the best balance depends on your hardware.

- Confirm that you are using the current official Cemu release and platform-specific setup instructions.

- Review Cemu’s troubleshooting guide for current diagnostics. If you are on Linux, consult platform-specific directions for update or DLC installation.
