Xbox describes Reloaded as a remastered version of the original, so it is the natural option if you want that first story in a remastered edition. Where the optional games fit
Gears of War: Judgment and Gears Tactics are additional entries, not necessary links in the five-game mainline route above. Xbox describes Judgment as taking place in the immediate aftermath of Emergence Day and Tactics as a squad strategy game. The official material cited here does not establish a definitive order between those two games, so there is no reliable basis for inserting them into a strict chronology relative to each other.
Story chronology is different from play order
Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel set fourteen years before the original Gears of War, according to Xbox’s E-Day product page. That makes E-Day first on the in-universe timeline. Starting with the original and following the mainline games is still a reasonable first-time route if you want to encounter the established saga before its origin story.

If you specifically want a timeline-oriented route, place E-Day before the original, and put Judgment in early-war material: Xbox characterizes it as occurring in the immediate aftermath of Emergence Day. The cited official pages do not settle where Gears Tactics belongs relative to Judgment, so leave its precise placement open rather than treating a fan timeline as definitive. After that early material, the established mainline sequence is Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Gears of War 4, and Gears 5. This is a practical partial chronology, not a fully verified canonical timeline.
Do you need to play Judgment or Gears Tactics?
No. You can follow the five-game mainline route without either. Judgment offers a story set around the immediate aftermath of Emergence Day; Gears Tactics offers a different, squad-strategy format. Choose them if those premises interest you, but neither is a prerequisite for the recommended mainline sequence.

As of October 4, 2026, early access to Gears of War: E-Day had begun on October 1, and its worldwide launch was scheduled for October 6, 2026. Xbox’s October 1 Xbox Wire announcement reports both dates. Availability can change; check the official product page for current release and platform details. Xbox lists Xbox Series X|S and Windows as platforms and Game Pass availability on that page; catalog access can vary by region and subscription terms.
