To play Halo 64 on a PC, you must provide data from your own legally obtained Xbox copy of Halo: Combat Evolved, build the fan-made Nintendo 64 ROM, and open it in an emulator configured with the 8 MB Expansion Pak. The project’s documented and tested emulator is ares v148. On Windows, the simplest route is Halo64RomBuilder.exe; on Linux or Windows WSL, use the project’s source-build toolchain.

The resulting multiplayer port includes all 13 multiplayer maps, one-to-four-player split screen, bots, several classic Halo multiplayer modes and Firefight. It has no networking, so it cannot provide online multiplayer.

What Halo 64 is—and what it is not

Halo 64 is a fan-made adaptation of Halo: Combat Evolved multiplayer for Nintendo 64 hardware and emulators. Its repository describes decompiled Halo code compiled for the N64 VR4300 processor, together with a new renderer, menus, HUD and sound. The multiplayer cartridge contains all 13 multiplayer maps and supports one to four local players, bots and Firefight.

A separate campaign cartridge is also produced by the build process, but the campaign is incomplete. Treat it as an experimental extra rather than a finished single-player version of the Xbox game. The project is not affiliated with Microsoft, Bungie or 343 Industries, and its documentation does not grant permission to distribute game data.

Legal and file requirements

You need your own copy of the Xbox game and must be legally entitled to use the files you convert. The project repository does not include retail game assets. Its build process converts map data from your copy, and the resulting ROM contains converted data from that game.

  • Use an original Xbox Halo: Combat Evolved disc image in ISO format, either a whole image or a trimmed image, or use the extracted game maps supplied by your own copy.
  • Do not download a prebuilt ROM from an unauthorized source or share a ROM you built from your game.
  • Keep the generated ROM and converted data private. The project README specifically says to keep a built ROM to yourself.
  • The instructions below describe software setup and conversion; they do not provide copyrighted game files.

Choose a build route

Route Best for Input Output Important resource requirement
Halo64RomBuilder.exe on Windows Players who want the fewest setup steps Whole or trimmed Xbox ISO, or an extracted maps folder halo-n64.z64 and, if selected, halo-campaign.z64 About 3 GB free memory and 3 GB working disk space
Source build on Linux or Windows WSL Users comfortable with a development toolchain or building from source Extracted Xbox maps in the project’s expected directory build/n64/halo.z64 Map conversion can require roughly 8 GB of memory under WSL

Both routes convert your own game data. The Windows builder is normally the practical choice for a first attempt; the source route is useful when you are on Linux, want reproducible builds, or need to work with the project’s current source tree.

Build the ROM with Halo64RomBuilder on Windows

1. Prepare the input

Have either an Xbox .iso image or the extracted maps directory available on the PC where you will run the builder. A whole disc image and a trimmed image are both accepted. If you use a maps directory, make sure it comes from your own legally obtained copy and that the directory has not been renamed or rearranged in a way the builder cannot recognize.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Start the builder

Launch Halo64RomBuilder.exe. The program is designed to accept the ISO or maps folder by drag and drop. Drop the source onto the builder window, or use its file picker if that is how your build is packaged.

3. Select the cartridge

Choose the multiplayer cartridge for the complete multiplayer experience. You can also select the campaign cartridge, or select both if you want both outputs. The campaign output is incomplete, while the multiplayer output is the project’s main playable release.

4. Choose an output directory

Select a writable destination with at least 3 GB of working disk space available. The builder writes halo-n64.z64 for multiplayer and halo-campaign.z64 for the optional campaign build. Do not place the output in a cloud-synchronization folder that may lock or rewrite a large file while the conversion is running.

5. Allow the conversion to finish

The conversion can be memory-intensive. Keep roughly 3 GB of free system memory available and avoid starting other large applications during the build. If Windows reports that the process stopped because of memory pressure, close other programs, increase available virtual memory, and run the conversion again from the original input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Keep the generated files private

Store the ROM with your other legally owned game files and do not upload it. If you later move it to another computer, move only your own copy and do not distribute it to other people.

Build from source on Linux or Windows WSL

Use a Linux filesystem for WSL

On Windows, install WSL with an Ubuntu distribution, then keep the project repository inside WSL’s Linux filesystem rather than under a mounted Windows path. The project documentation notes that this is substantially faster for the many small files used during compilation and conversion.

Install the documented tools

The source instructions require Git, Python 3, Pillow, Ninja and the normal build tools. They also require the project’s documented setup for libdragon, tiny3d and Invader. Install the versions and environment variables specified by the current project README instead of substituting unrelated packages; those components provide the Nintendo 64 compiler, graphics support and asset-conversion stages.

Place your extracted maps

After extracting the Xbox data from your own copy, place the maps in:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

build/xbox/disc/maps

Use the exact directory name and capitalization expected by the build scripts. If the directory is empty, contains files from a different game edition, or is one level deeper than expected, the conversion stage will fail or produce an incomplete result.

Run the project’s build commands

Follow the repository’s documented libdragon, tiny3d, Invader and final build commands in the order shown there. The completed multiplayer ROM is written to:

build/n64/halo.z64

Copy that file to a Windows folder if you plan to run it with a Windows emulator. Keep the source tree and generated files in WSL while building; copying only the finished ROM avoids the slower cross-filesystem build path.

Give WSL enough memory

Map conversion can need roughly 8 GB of memory under WSL. If the build is killed without a useful error, increase WSL’s memory allowance in your Windows .wslconfig, restart WSL, and run the conversion again. Also close memory-heavy applications before retrying. A build that reaches the final ROM-writing stage has normally passed the most demanding conversion step.

Run the ROM in ares

ares v148 is the emulator named and tested by the project. Install that version or a compatible current release, then enable the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak setting before starting the game. The port expects 8 MB of N64 memory; leaving the setting off can cause a failed boot, missing content or unstable behavior.

Windows command prompt

Open Command Prompt in the directory containing the ROM and run:

ares.exe --system "Nintendo 64" --setting Nintendo64/ExpansionPak=true halo.z64

If you used Halo64RomBuilder, substitute halo-n64.z64 for halo.z64, because the Windows builder uses that filename. Use halo-campaign.z64 only when you intentionally want to test the incomplete campaign cartridge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Linux Flatpak

For an ares Flatpak installation, the project documents:

flatpak run dev.ares.ares --system "Nintendo 64" --setting Nintendo64/ExpansionPak=true build/n64/halo.z64

The same Expansion Pak setting can be enabled through ares’s Nintendo 64 system settings if you prefer the graphical interface. Confirm that the setting is enabled for the game before loading the ROM, not after a failed boot.

Save-file location

ares keeps the cartridge EEPROM save file beside the ROM. Leave that file in place if you want settings or progress that use the cartridge save to survive a restart. Moving only the .z64 file without its matching save file can make the emulator appear to have forgotten previous data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using Project64 instead

Project64 is a general Windows Nintendo 64 emulator and can open ROMs through File > Open ROM. It is a reasonable fallback when ares is unavailable, but it is not the emulator the Halo 64 project documents as its development and test target.

Open the multiplayer ROM, then inspect the per-game Nintendo 64 memory or emulator settings and enable the equivalent Expansion Pak or 8 MB option. Project64 builds can expose that control under different menu names, so use the setting associated with the game’s memory configuration rather than assuming the default is correct. If the game boots in ares but not Project64, test the same ROM in ares first, verify the Expansion Pak option, and then troubleshoot Project64’s graphics, input and plugin settings one at a time.

Consideration ares Project64
Project relationship Named and tested by the Halo 64 README; use it first General Windows alternative; compatibility may require troubleshooting

Expansion Pak Explicit setting: Nintendo64/ExpansionPak=true Enable the equivalent per-game 8 MB memory option where available
Controller and rumble Supports the project’s tested path and can pass rumble to a PC gamepad Mapping and rumble behavior depend on the selected input configuration
Best troubleshooting order Start here, then adjust graphics or input Verify memory, graphics and controller settings after confirming the ROM itself works in ares

Controls and controller setup

The standard control scheme maps Halo actions onto an N64 pad:

Input Action
Analog stick Look and turn
C buttons Move up or down and strafe left or right
Z Fire
R Throw a grenade
A Jump
B Reload or perform an action such as picking up an item or entering a vehicle
L Melee
D-pad up, down, left and right Switch weapons, crouch, zoom and switch grenades
START Pause and show the scoreboard

The port includes bumper-jumper, GoldenEye and north control schemes, plus inverted look and adjustable stick and C-button look speeds. Try a preset first, then change only the look speed or inversion setting that feels wrong; changing several mappings at once makes it harder to identify the cause of an uncomfortable layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ares can pass rumble to a PC gamepad with vibration motors. A USB N64-style controller is optional, but its three-pronged layout makes the documented stick, C-button and Z-trigger arrangement easier to reproduce than a typical keyboard.

What you can play

Local multiplayer

The multiplayer cartridge supports one to four players on the same PC through split screen. Connect and map each controller in the emulator before entering a match. The game is designed for local play; adding more players does not turn it into a networked session.

Bots

You can add up to eight bots and choose among four skill levels. Bot count and skill affect performance, especially when several split-screen views are active, so start with fewer opponents while checking that your emulator and graphics settings are stable.

Game types

Available modes include Slayer, Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Oddball and Race, along with related team variants. Firefight is also included. The exact feel of a match depends on the selected map, number of views and bot count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Campaign cartridge

The separate campaign output is incomplete. It is useful for testing the project’s experimental campaign work, but the finished multiplayer cartridge is the appropriate choice if your goal is the playable Halo 64 experience described by the project.

Performance settings and diagnosis

Performance varies by map, number of split-screen views and bot count. The port exposes settings for resolution, animation rate, particles, view-model detail and terrain detail. It also provides an FPS counter, which helps distinguish an emulator configuration problem from a workload that is simply too high for the selected settings.

  • If the frame rate drops only with four views, reduce resolution or particle and terrain detail before changing controller settings.
  • If slowdown appears when many bots are active, lower the bot count or skill level to establish a stable baseline.
  • If weapon models or effects look wrong after a graphics change, restore view-model or particle settings to their defaults and test again.
  • Use the FPS counter while changing one option at a time; record which map, view count and bot count produced the drop.

Troubleshooting common failures

The builder cannot find the game data

Check that the input is an Xbox .iso or the expected extracted maps folder from your own copy. A folder containing unrelated files, an incomplete extraction or an extra directory level can prevent detection. Re-select the original source and try the conversion again.

The Windows build runs out of memory or disk space

Free at least 3 GB of working disk space and about 3 GB of available memory, close other applications, and retry. Keep the output directory writable. If the process was interrupted, remove only the incomplete output and start a fresh conversion rather than attempting to load a partially written ROM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The WSL build is killed

Increase WSL’s memory limit in .wslconfig, restart WSL, and rerun the map conversion. Confirm that the repository is inside the Linux filesystem and that the maps are under build/xbox/disc/maps. The source build’s conversion stage can need about 8 GB of memory.

The emulator does not boot the game

First enable Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak support, representing 8 MB, and verify that you opened the multiplayer ROM rather than an incomplete or partially generated file. In ares, use the documented Nintendo64/ExpansionPak=true setting. If you are using Project64, check its equivalent per-game memory option and test the ROM in ares to separate emulator compatibility from a bad build.

The game starts but controls are unusable

Open the emulator’s controller configuration, confirm that the analog stick and C buttons are mapped, and select one of the port’s control schemes. Check that the correct controller is assigned to each split-screen player. If aiming feels reversed, use the in-game inverted-look option rather than swapping unrelated buttons.

Rumble does not work

Use a controller with vibration motors, enable rumble in the emulator and confirm that the operating system recognizes the device. ares can pass rumble to a PC gamepad, but the result still depends on the controller and its driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The ROM seems to lose saved data

Keep the ares EEPROM save file beside the ROM. Moving or renaming the ROM without its matching save file can make the emulator create a new save, which looks like lost progress.

Can Halo 64 be played online?

No. The project README explicitly states “No networking.” Its supported multiplayer is local split screen for up to four players, with optional bots. An emulator’s netplay feature, if it has one, is not the same as native networking in the port and is not documented as supported by the project.

Recommended setup in one pass

  1. Obtain your own legally usable Xbox Halo: Combat Evolved data.
  2. On Windows, run Halo64RomBuilder.exe; on Linux or WSL, install the documented toolchain and place maps in build/xbox/disc/maps.
  3. Build the multiplayer ROM, keeping in mind the Windows output is halo-n64.z64 while the source build output is build/n64/halo.z64.
  4. Launch it in ares v148 with Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak enabled.
  5. Map the analog stick, C buttons, Z, R, A, B, L, D-pad and START, then select your preferred control scheme.
  6. Begin with one view and a small number of bots, use the FPS counter, and tune resolution, particles, terrain and view-model detail for your system.
  7. Keep the generated ROM and converted data private; do not expect online multiplayer.
