You can keep a game test separate from your main store identity, but a second account does not make the phone or the game anonymous. On Android, add the Google Account the developer approved, select it in the Play Store, then open the test link. On iPhone, create and secure a separate Apple Account if appropriate, but check Apple’s current TestFlight instructions before changing which account is signed in to device services.
What a separate test account does—and does not—protect
A separate store account can help keep a test invitation and any associated store activity distinct from your main store identity. It does not guarantee that the game cannot collect device information, permissions data, gameplay activity, or information you enter in the game. Treat account separation and app privacy as two different checks.

Before installing an unfamiliar build, read its Google Play Data safety information and review the permissions it requests. Avoid entering sensitive personal information, and do not add payment details unless the test genuinely requires them. Google Play’s User Data policy sets disclosure and data-handling obligations for developers; those obligations are not a technical barrier separating the game from your device or account.
Android: use the invited Google Account in Play Store
Google Play tests require an eligible Google Account or Google Workspace account. The developer controls which people can join: an internal or closed test may be restricted to an email list or Google Group, while an open test may be more broadly available. Use the address the developer invited or approved; having a second account alone does not grant access. See Google’s guide to setting up an open, closed, or internal test.

- Add the account to Android. In Settings, open the account-management section and choose the option to add an account, then add the approved Google Account. The exact menu label varies by Android version and manufacturer; Google lists labels including “Passwords & accounts,” “Users & accounts,” “Passwords, passkeys & autofill,” and “Manage accounts.” Follow Google’s Android account instructions if the menu differs on your phone.
- Select it in the Play Store. Open Google Play, tap your profile icon, and choose the account tied to the invitation. Do this before opening the test link or installing the game. Google documents how to add and switch Play Store accounts.
- Open the developer’s test link. Join or install using the selected, eligible account and follow the developer’s enrollment instructions. If access is denied or the app is unavailable, verify that the selected address is the one approved for the test and ask the developer to confirm eligibility.
- Secure the account and phone. Use a strong password, enable two-step verification, set recovery options, and protect the device with a screen lock. Google recommends these safeguards for Play Store accounts.
Know what adding the account puts on the phone
Adding a Google Account to Android can add its associated information—including email, contacts, and calendar data—to the device. Review its sync options before continuing. When the test is over, you can remove that account from the device in Settings if appropriate; Google says removal also removes its associated information from that device. This is not the same as deleting the Google Account itself.
Android also supports separate device users or a guest profile, which may be useful when lending a phone. That is a device-level separation option, not a substitute for the account the developer requires for a Play test.

If the test still looks unavailable
Google notes that some settings can follow the default account even when several accounts are signed in. The default account can affect country-specific services, including Play Store content. Confirm the selected account and its region before troubleshooting availability; if those are correct, ask the developer whether the test track is open to that account. Google’s guidance on using multiple accounts also recommends signing in to multiple accounts only on devices you do not share with other people.

iPhone: secure a separate Apple Account, but verify TestFlight setup first
Apple supports creating another Apple Account on an Apple device or on the web. Its setup process includes providing and verifying an email address, creating a strong password, and choosing a country or region. Apple recommends two-factor authentication, along with a device passcode and supported Face ID or Touch ID. Its explanation of two-factor authentication describes a password plus a six-digit verification code sent to a trusted device or phone number.

The exact current steps for using a different Apple Account with TestFlight while keeping your primary account for iCloud or other services are not established here. Before changing any sign-in configuration, check Apple’s current Apple Account creation guidance and TestFlight instructions, and use the account associated with the developer’s invitation. Do not sign out of iCloud or alter the primary device account casually.
Apple’s purchase-migration guidance, updated July 24, 2025, contains a restriction involving an account used with TestFlight in the specific context of migrating purchases. That restriction is about purchase migration; it does not explain the general TestFlight sign-in process.

Choose the boundary that matches your concern
- To keep store activity distinct: use the eligible account the developer invited, and confirm it is selected in the relevant store before joining.
- To limit account data on a shared Android phone: consider a separate Android user or guest profile, and remember that adding a Google Account can sync its associated information to the device.
- To assess what the game may access: review permissions and data disclosures, read the game’s privacy notice, and avoid sharing sensitive information in the build.
- If you create an in-game profile: check the game’s own privacy notice and deletion process. Google Play policy says apps that allow account creation must offer account deletion in the app and through an external web resource, but that policy does not guarantee every test build has a smooth deletion flow.
A separate device can provide a stronger practical boundary for some situations, but the guidance here does not establish that one is necessary or that it guarantees isolation. For most testers, the key is to use the invited store identity, secure it, and separately judge whether the game’s data practices are acceptable.
