Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSteam Link lets you play games from your Steam library on an Android phone, tablet, or TV by streaming them from a computer. The computer runs the game; Steam Link sends its video and audio to Android and returns your controls and voice over the network. Nothing is installed or rendered locally as an Android version of the PC game.
For the official setup, keep the computer running Steam, connect Android and the computer to the same network, install Steam Link, and follow its pairing prompts. A physical controller is optional, but the right controller can make longer sessions much more comfortable.

What Steam Link actually does
Steam Link is a streaming client, not an Android game installer. Your Windows, macOS, or Linux computer remains responsible for launching and running the Steam game. Android receives a live picture and sound stream, while your touches, controller buttons, keyboard input, and other supported input travel back to the computer.
Valve describes the underlying system as real-time video encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol. That description explains how the stream is transported; it is not a promise of a particular frame rate, response time, or image quality on every home network. You can read Valve’s overview on the Steam Remote Play page.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
The host computer must stay available while you play. If it is shut down, Steam is closed, or the game cannot run on that computer, Android has nothing to stream.
What you need before starting
| Item | What the official information establishes |
|---|---|
| Host computer | A computer with the Steam library and Steam running and signed in |
| Android device | Steam Link supports many phones, tablets, and TVs running Android 5.0 or newer |
| Initial network | Android and the host computer should be on the same network so the app can find and pair with the host |
| Router | Valve recommends a 5 GHz wireless router; this is a recommendation, not an absolute requirement or a guarantee of smooth play |
| Controller | Optional. Touch or another supported input may be enough, while a compatible controller is often more comfortable |
The Android 5.0 minimum belongs to the Steam Link app. Do not confuse it with the separately stated Android 7.0 minimum for Steam’s mobile app. Valve’s current Steam Link requirements and controller notes are in the Steam Link App for Android FAQ.
Android version checks
On most devices, open Settings and look for About phone, About tablet, or a similarly named system-information page. Confirm that the Android version is 5.0 or newer before installing Steam Link. Manufacturers can use different menu labels, so the exact path varies by device.

Host computer checks
- Install Steam on the computer that contains the games you want to play.
- Turn the computer on and launch Steam.
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns or can access the library.
- Leave the computer available for the entire streaming session.
Decide how you will play
Think about the games and the Android screen before choosing input hardware. A short test with touch controls can confirm that the host and stream work without requiring a purchase. Turn-based games, menu-heavy titles, and games with limited simultaneous input may be comfortable enough this way. Action games that depend on precise analog movement, repeated triggers, or several shoulder buttons are often easier with a physical controller.
You also need to decide whether Android is a phone, tablet, or TV. A phone is portable but may require a phone-mounted controller for a stable handheld feel. A tablet gives menus and text more room, while an Android TV setup normally works best with a separate controller because the display is across the room. None of these choices changes where the game runs: the Steam computer remains the host.
How do I play Steam games on my Android phone?
Follow this sequence for the first connection. The same basic flow applies to an Android tablet or Android TV device.
- Prepare the host. Turn on the computer that has your Steam library, launch Steam, and sign in.
- Join the same network. Connect the Android device and the computer to the same home network. This gives Steam Link a straightforward way to discover the host during setup.
- Install Steam Link. Get the Steam Link app from the appropriate Android app store, open it, and begin the setup flow.
- Follow the pairing prompts. Let the app search for the computer and complete the on-screen pairing instructions. The available screens can change as Valve updates the app, so rely on the current prompts rather than an old screenshot.
- Connect input if you want it. Pair or connect a compatible controller before starting a game, or continue with the input options available on your Android device.
- Start streaming. After the host is paired, use Steam Link to begin a session and select a game from the computer’s Steam library. The computer launches and runs the game while Android displays the stream.
Keep Steam open and the computer powered on. Closing Steam, putting the computer to sleep, or losing the host’s network connection ends the practical path to the game even though the Steam Link app remains installed.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What happens after pairing
Pairing links the Android client with the computer; it does not copy the library to the phone. Each time you play, the computer still needs to be awake, signed in, and able to launch the selected title. If another person is using the computer, their activity can affect what you see because Android is receiving that computer’s live display. Ending the streaming session does not turn the Android device into a standalone PC-game installation.
Can I use a controller with Steam Link on Android?
Yes. Valve’s Android FAQ specifically names several supported choices, but compatibility depends on both the controller model and the Android version. Valve also notes that other input devices may work without official support, so an unlisted controller is not guaranteed.
| Controller named by Valve | Android qualification in Valve’s FAQ | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Controller | Listed as supported | Useful if you already own one; check that it can connect to your particular Android device |
| Xbox One S controller | Listed as supported | A practical option for players who already use this model |
| DualShock 4 | Supported on Android 9.0 or newer | The Android 9.0 condition applies to this listed support |
| Razer Kishi | Listed by Valve | A phone-mounted form factor; verify the connector and fit for your phone |
| Razer Raiju Mobile | Listed by Valve | A separate mobile controller option; verify your device’s connection method |
The named models and the Android 9.0 DualShock 4 condition come from Valve’s Steam Link App for Android FAQ. The FAQ does not establish current inventory, a particular revision of any model, or that every phone will fit every mobile controller.
Choosing between touch input and a controller
- Use touch input first if you are testing Steam Link, playing a slower game, or do not want to buy hardware. It lets you verify the stream before spending money.
- Use a controller you already own when it appears in Valve’s compatibility list and your Android version meets any stated condition. This is usually the simplest comfort upgrade.
- Choose a phone-mounted controller when portability and a handheld shape matter more than using a separate gamepad. Confirm the phone’s physical fit and connector before purchase.
- Choose a separate Bluetooth or wired controller when you also play on a tablet or TV, or want to use the same controller away from the phone.
For games that depend on precise analog movement, many players will find a physical controller easier to use than on-screen controls. That is a comfort and control decision, not a requirement imposed by Steam Link.

Controller buying checklist
Start with hardware you already own before shopping. Check the exact model name, the Android version on the device you will use, and whether the controller’s connection method suits that device. A phone-mounted design must physically fit the phone; a separate controller must be comfortable to hold and convenient to recharge or connect. Valve’s compatibility list confirms named support, but it does not confirm current store stock, a particular revision, or fit for every handset. Treat an unlisted controller as a trial rather than an assured solution.
How Steam Link sends the game to Android
Remote Play encodes the computer’s live game output as video, sends the video and audio to the client, and returns your input and voice through the network protocol. Because the computer performs the game’s rendering, Android hardware does not need to meet the PC game’s graphics-card requirements; it does need to decode the stream and maintain a reliable connection.
Valve recommends a 5 GHz wireless router for the Android app. A 5 GHz connection can be a sensible choice where your device and router support it, but Valve’s published material here does not specify an Android bandwidth minimum, a latency target, or a guaranteed frame rate. Do not treat any single router band as a promise that every game will feel perfect.

Practical network choices
- Use the same network for the initial pairing, as Valve’s setup guidance describes.
- Place the Android device where its wireless signal is stable enough to sustain a live stream.
- Keep the host computer connected and awake for the session.
- If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, the 5 GHz option is the one Valve recommends for Steam Link.
These steps improve the conditions Steam Link needs, but they cannot remove interference, congestion, distance, or limitations imposed by a particular device or network.
What the network affects
The network carries both the computer’s encoded picture and sound toward Android and your input back toward the computer. A busy or unstable connection can therefore affect what you see and how quickly the host receives a button press. The official pages do not assign a universal bandwidth number or response-time target, so avoid judging your setup against an invented threshold. Test the games you actually play, in the room where you intend to use them, and treat Valve’s 5 GHz recommendation as guidance rather than a guarantee.
Can I play Steam games on Android away from home?
The documented Android setup is based on putting the phone or tablet and the Steam computer on the same network so the app can discover and pair with the host. Valve’s Remote Play description explains the streaming technology, but Valve’s Android FAQ does not provide a complete away-from-home procedure or a performance guarantee for mobile-data or other remote connections.
Therefore, treat same-network setup as the reliable starting point. If you want to try connecting from another location, the host computer still has to be powered on, signed in to Steam, running the relevant services, and reachable through an internet connection, while the Android device needs its own working connection. The official material cited here does not establish specific router settings, bandwidth thresholds, or support steps for that scenario. Check the current Steam Support guidance before relying on an away-from-home setup.
Do not assume that pairing on your home network automatically proves that a hotel, school, cellular, or other remote network will work. Those environments can impose their own restrictions, and the cited Valve pages do not promise that every remote route will be discoverable or responsive. A same-network session is the clearest way to separate host and controller problems from the extra uncertainty of a remote connection.

When Steam Link cannot find or use the host, begin with checks directly tied to Valve’s documented setup rather than changing advanced settings at random.
The computer does not appear
- Confirm that the host computer is turned on.
- Launch Steam and verify that you are signed in.
- Check that Android and the computer are on the same network for initial discovery.
- Open Steam Link again and follow its current pairing prompts.
The stream will not start
- Make sure Steam remains open on the host and that the computer has not gone to sleep.
- Confirm that the game is available in the signed-in Steam library.
- Check that the Android device still has a network connection.
- Verify that the host can run the game normally in Steam before treating Steam Link as the cause.
The controller does not work
- Identify the exact controller model rather than assuming that every version in a product family has identical support.
- Compare it with Valve’s named Android support list.
- If you are using a DualShock 4, verify that Android is version 9.0 or newer.
- Try the session without the controller to determine whether the stream itself works; Valve says other input devices may work, but unlisted devices are not officially guaranteed.
Lag, a blank picture, or other errors
Valve’s Android FAQ does not provide a universal fix sequence for lag, black screens, or every pairing failure. First verify the host, sign-in status, same-network discovery, and controller compatibility above. For the next step, use the current troubleshooting tab in Steam Support’s Steam Link documentation instead of applying an unverified workaround.

Steam Link on a phone, tablet, or TV
The same core architecture applies across Android form factors: the computer runs the game and Android displays the stream. The practical choice is mainly about screen size, how you hold the device, and how you connect input.
- Phone: Most portable, but a separate controller can be more comfortable for long sessions unless you use a phone-mounted model.
- Tablet: A larger screen can make menus and text easier to read while retaining portability.
- Android TV: Convenient for a living-room display, where a separate controller is usually more natural than touch controls.
Valve’s FAQ describes support for many Android phones, tablets, and TVs running Android 5.0 or newer. “Many” does not mean every device is guaranteed to behave identically; manufacturer software and controller connectivity can differ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMatch the device to the session
Use a phone when portability matters and you can keep the host computer available. A tablet can be preferable for strategy games, role-playing interfaces, or any title where small text is difficult to read on a phone. Android TV keeps the computer in another room while putting the stream on a larger display, but it generally requires a separate controller. In every case, the Android device is the viewing and input endpoint, not the machine running the game.
What Steam Link cannot do
- It does not convert a PC game into a native Android installation.
- It does not let the game run when the Steam computer is unavailable.
- It does not provide a Valve-stated universal bandwidth, latency, or frame-rate guarantee in the cited documentation.
- It does not make every controller officially compatible; Valve’s list is model- and, for DualShock 4, Android-version-specific.
- It does not remove the need for a working network between the host and the Android client.
Keeping the setup dependable
- Use a host computer that is consistently powered and able to stay awake during play.
- Keep Steam signed in on that computer before opening Steam Link.
- Use the same network when pairing or when you need the simplest discovery path.
- Prefer the 5 GHz wireless network when available, following Valve’s recommendation.
- Test the stream with touch input or an existing controller before buying additional hardware.
- Record the exact Android version and controller model if you need to consult Steam Support; those details determine which compatibility notes apply.
- Test the complete setup with one game before planning a long session, then note whether the screen size and input method remain comfortable.
Steam Link is most useful when you want the convenience of an Android screen without moving the game installation or hardware from your Steam computer. Once the host is running, the app and a suitable input device can turn that computer’s library into a streamed handheld, tablet, or TV experience.
